A Tour Through New Fantasyland Expansion at the Magic Kingdom

The

One of my favorite moments at the recent D23 Expo was walking through the Carousel of Projects, an area full of displays, models and renderings of new projects coming soon to Disney Parks around the world. Inside, there were Cars Land ride vehicles, a model of Buena Vista Street and Carthay Circle Theater at Disney California Adventure park, and much more. I have to say, it was a lot of fun to watch the reaction of expo attendees to all of the updated projects – especially to the model of New Fantasyland, which laid out just what this expanded area will look like when its complete.

The Carousel of Projects New Fantasyland display also featured a ton of previously unreleased renderings of the expansion, which Walt Disney Imagineering was happy to share with us. Check them out in the gallery below.

Which new attraction are you most looking forward to?

The Journey of The Little Mermaid will feature a statue of Ariel at the entrance.Inside the attraction, Ursula the sea witch bubbles up some trouble.Princess Fantasy Faire will be the place to meet and greet your favorite Disney royalty.Storybook Circus will be the new home to Dumbo the Flying Elephant, which will double in size and feature an interactive queue.

New Fantasyland will include an area dedicated to Beauty and The Beast, including Maurice’s Cottage (left) and Beast’s Castle (middle). Once inside Maurice’s Cottage, guests can engage in a playful storytime with Belle and Lumiere. Gaston’s Pub will be another highlight of this new area. The interior of pub will be themed the one featured in the film – a hunting lodge full of antlers. And of course, a portrait of Gaston will highlight the pub.

All I really needed to know, I learned from Disney Cast Members.

All I really needed to know, I learned from Disney Cast Members.

Do you remember that poem by Robert Fulgham “All I really needed to know I learned in Kindergarten”? Well as I was trying to fall asleep this idea seized my brain and I just had to write it out.

All I really needed to know I learned from Disney Cast Members. (Walt Disney World & Disneyland)

  • Do everything you can to make someones day magical!
  • If you know its someones birthday or anniversary you should ALWAYS tell them HAPPY BIRTHDAY or HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, people never get tired of you celebrating with them.
  • Even if you’re not in a good mood, you should fake it.
  • Fashion isn’t everything. (Just ask anybody who works at Epcot)
  • Always be extra nice to the people who “pay your salary”, even if they are cranky, mean, and don’t deserve it.
  • Even Princesses aren’t Perfect. (Even they need to wear wigs in order to keep their hair from frizzing in the humidity of Orlando.)
  • Make friends with total strangers and expect nothing in return.
  • Be culturally sensitive. A thumbs up gesture to a North American means something very different in other parts of the world.
  • Try something every day that scares you just a little bit (like Tower of Terror)
  • Act like every day is good enough to end with a parade and fireworks.
  • Some people are just cranky, its not necessarily your fault.
  • If you want to work your way up to being a CEO you should get ok with sweeping the streets.
  • Answer the question. Just because someone asked you that same question 10 minutes ago doesn’t mean you should get exasperated. The person who asked you now doesn’t even KNOW the person 10 minutes ago.
  • Everyday you go to work, try to make it one of the Happiest Places on Earth!
  • Don’t stare at people when their kids go into melt-down. It only makes them more angry.
  • Always be able to tell people where the bathrooms are. It makes you valuable.
  • Never think you’re too good or be too proud to clean up puke.
  • If you keep making that face it will stick that way is a good thing when that face is a smile.
  • Just because you’ve done something hundreds of times doesn’t mean you’re entitled to suck the fun out of it for everybody else.
  • Be child-like every day.
  • Smile when you see old couples holding hands and people dancing in the streets with their children.
  • If you don’t know the answer FIND SOMEONE WHO DOES.
  • Everybody needs to wait their turn.
  • Being sarcastic is not acceptable to someone you don’t know.
  • Never force a child to do something they’re uncomfortable with. (like riding Space Mountain for instance!)
  • Make any guests in your home feel 100% welcome and comfortable.
  • Money can’t buy you happiness, but it can get you a tour-guide that knows what the heck they’re doing and a room in on the Monorail loop.
  • Take pride in whatever you do (someone has to operate Country Bear Jamboree after all!)
  • When someone’s an excellent leader, follow them (Thanks Walt!)
  • Always, always, step away from the monorail doors when they’re closing.

Top 5 Best Disney Princes

Top 5 Best Disney Princes

It’s no secret that princesses are huge part of Disney’s success and have been since the very beginning. I mean, Disney’s very first film, Snow White, was about a princess; and ever since, Disney has dominated the princess, fairy tale genre. Now, I totally get the princess appeal with the castles, gorgeous gowns, grand aventures, and living happily ever after; but often times we overlook the other half of the fairy tale equation: the prince! Today I’m here to give Disney princes the attention they deserve in my Top 5 list. Also, as always, I’m looking for your input so be sure to share what your favorite Disney prince is!

5. Flynn Rider-Disney’s newest prince, Flynn was actually born an orphan, turned into a thief, but ended up saving the lost princess, Rapunzel, by giving up his own life for her. Flynn definitely has a sense of humor, ambition, and more personality than we have probably ever seen out of any Disney prince. Talk about a great catch! This is why he definitely deserves a spot on this Top 5 list. Plus, in 2012, you can see how he and Rapunzel lived happily ever after! For more info, check out Disney’s Tangled Gets Sequel – Tangled Ever After

4. Prince Philip-Sleeping Beauty’s man, Prince Philip found Sleeping Beauty (Aurora) in the woods and won her over with his charm, singing voice, and smooth, dancing skills. Then he took on evil Maleficent in dragon form with just a sword and shield before waking his princess with a kiss and breaking the spell that was cast over the whole kingdom. It’s hard not to be impressed with that!

3. Prince Eric-This prince became a prince of both land and sea when he married headstrong  Ariel, the daughter of King Triton! Even though Eric was royalty, he wasn’t just content to just hang at his cool, seaside castle. Instead, he spent his time aboard ship or taking Ariel on dates to the village or to the beautiful lagoon in the “Kiss the Girl” scene. What really makes Eric great is that he defeated Ursula and saved both his princess and the king of the entire ocean, Triton himself. Impressive! Check out the new Little Mermaid ride at Disneyland and the one coming to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom here!

2. Aladdin-This diamond in the rough didn’t have much of a trust fund, but then who needs one when you have the Genie? This Disney prince started out as a street rat and struggled to do whatever it took to win his Princess Jasmine’s heart. Aladdin had a heart of gold and was very smart; and due to his quick thinking alone, he saved Jasmine, the Sultan, and his friends. You can’t go wrong with a guy who’s smart, brave, and has a great ride, a magic carpet!

1. The Beast-While he had a rough exterior to be sure, he saved Belle from the wolves, gave her a whole library, was a good dancer, and was willing to live the rest of his life as a beast just so Belle could be happy and save her father. What guy has done that for you lately? That’s what I thought. He’s also one of the few Disney princes who really dictated the storyline and had a lot more depth than the others; and when the spell was broken, he turned out to be the prince every princess dreams of and has the coolest castle ever! Soon you will be able to step into Beauty and the Beast’s world at Walt Disney’s World’s Fantasyland! Click here for more info!

So now it’s your turn! Who is your favorite Disney prince?

Oldies But Goodies – Six Things Seniors MUST Do At Walt Disney World

Oldies But Goodies - Six Things Seniors MUST Do At Walt Disney World

There are a lot of us Oldies who love to ride every attraction every time they visit Walt Disney World and I am one of them. I plan on doing this as long as I am physically able. There are, however, lots of things you can do aside from the parks that are not just pleasant diversions but also can bring fun, romance, or excitement to your visit (especially for the Senior crowd, my Peeps!!) Here are just a few that my wife and I have experienced, you pick the ones you want to try!!

  1. Dinner At Victoria & Albert’s – The premier restaurant at Walt Disney World and arguably in all of Central Florida is Victoria and Albert’s in Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.  No matter which experience you choose you will enjoy a marvelous multi course meal and impeccable service, after all it is a Five Diamond award winner for the last eleven consecutive years. There are basically three different experiences – the Main Dining Room, the Queen Victoria Room, and the Chef’s Table. The number of courses (and of course the price) goes up with each experience. Is it worth it? Absolutely YES!!
  2. Characters In Flight – This is one of those things a lot of folks might be apprehensive about but really should not be. It is a tethered (which means you won’t drift off to OZ) helium filled balloon that will take you about 400-450 feet above Downtown Disney and allow you to see for miles and miles. I personally have height issues but convinced myself to give it a try and I will be doing it on every visit. The staff is caring and professional and the whole operation abides by the strictest of weather safety rules. Go for it my friends!!
  3. Illuminations Cruise – Enjoy a leisurely cruise and finish with a “best seat in the house” unobstructed view of Illuminations at Epcot. These cruises are very popular so book it early. One hint, ask your Captain to head for Illuminations about 15 minutes earlier than he/she normally would and you will be right up front to see the show.
  4. Wishes Fireworks On The Beach At The Polynesian – This is one of two suggestions that is absolutely free. Just catch the Monorail, boat, or bus to the Poly about an hour ahead of time and head for the beach to watch Wishes at the Magic Kingdom across the Seven Seas Lagoon. You get an entirely different perspective of Wishes from that location, it’s beautiful.
  5. Cirque du Soleil, La Nouba – If you have never seen a Cirque du Soleil show you need to give this one a try. La Nouba recently had their 6000th performance at Walt Disney World and it has just gotten better and better each time we have seen it. You will be absolutely mesmerized by the skills and artistry of the clowns, acrobats, high fliers, jugglers, etc. etc. etc. It is a 90 minute show with no intermission but when the show is complete you simply will not believe 90 minutes has passed by. You have got to see this show!!
  6. Walking World Showcase After Illuminations – This is not only the other freebie in the list but is one of the most romantic things you can do at Walt Disney World when you do it with the one you love. IMPORTANT- do not join the thundering herd at the entrance to the World Showcase from Future World. They are there not just to see Illuminations but to make sure they are among the first to be able to stand in line to wait for transportation. After you watch the show from somewhere in the World Showcase (hint, try the Italy area) and the crazies are running so they can stand in line just take a leisurely stroll in your favorite direction and enjoy World Showcase as few have seen it – nearly empty!! Very nice and incredibly romantic. Take your time, they won’t kick you out.

Whether you are a lunatic senior like me and ride every attraction you can or you prefer a more laid back approach, try some of these things. I can honestly say you will not be disappointed. As always, enjoy your visit to Walt Disney World!!

New Queue at Disney World’s Haunted Mansion

New Queue at Disney World's Haunted Mansion

“Welcome foolish mortals…”

It’s one of my favorite lines of any attraction…of course you all know where it’s from…Haunted Mansion!

If you’ve been in a hurry to get into the Mansion you’re missing out on my favorite addition to the attraction-the graveyard. If you go right, to get right on the ride, you truly are a foolish mortal. Veer left and go through the graveyard and take your Haunted Mansion experience to a whole new level.

Play instruments set in stone with just the sweep of your hand, watch books check themselves in and out of the library, and be a muse…this is my favorite station! Watch as the pages of a blank journal come to life with a poem or question…be sure to speak up when you answer the spirit…she doesn’t like silent muses!

The installation of the new queue relocated something secret hunters have long sought; the bride’s ring. The backstory of the bride has had many versions, and each cast member you ask will tell you their own, this is one urban legend that has taken a life of its own. One of the original backstories is this: Master Gracey was married 6 times, and all of his wives died. He proposed to his 7th wife, who was a prankster. She decided to play a prank and hide in a trunk in the attic on their wedding night, but the trunk locked and nobody heard her cries for help; she suffocated and died. Master Gracey was ridden with grief and had his wife’s body placed in a horse drawn carriage to be brought to the cemetery. Something spooked the horse and it bolted, her wedding ring fell and was stomped into the pavement by the horse’s hooves. The next day the carriage was found outside the cemetery, but the horse, driver and corpse were nowhere to be found. Master Gracey was so grief stricken he went back to the mansion and hung himself.

Secret seekers knew where to find the “ring”…the ring was actually leftover metal from the relocation of the gates posts. The cement was never filled in completely so a ring was left in the cement…and the legend was born.

During the construction of the new graveyard the imagineers decided to give the secret seekers and legend makers what they wanted, and put the brides actual ring in the graveyard.

Before you go see the grim grinning ghosts, pay homage to Madame Leota, keep your eyes on her and you may see her eyes on you!

I’ve sought the secret and i’ve found the Bride’s ring…do you know where it is?

Top 10 Reasons to RunDisney

Top 10 Reasons to RunDisney

Running is a passion shared by all runners. There is something about the exhilaration you feel when your running. For those who don’t run here are my top 10 reasons to Run Disney!

10. Improve your Health: Whether you’re athletic or not, training for a race, from 5k to full marathon (or even the Goofy Challenge), running or walking a 16 minute pace is a great way to get into shape, or improve your current condition.

9. Tour the Parks More Easily: In relation to Number 10 – you won’t have to train to walk the parks if you’ve trained for a race!  You’ll be ready to go and enjoy the parks and have more energy and stamina than you may have had in previous trips!

8. Run for a Cause – Though totally optional, many people like to run on a “team” and raise money for different charities.  Off the top of my head, I know there are teams for different types of cancer and for Make-a-Wish!  You can make a difference and have fun, too!  Plus, if you prefer, you can find a team filled with other Disney- addicts and cherish the community!

7. Be Cheered on by Complete Strangers – Disney races are unique in that runners wear their names on their bibs, and many of the them will cheer for you, simply for running by!

6. Meet Your Favorite Characters – In a 13.1 mile race, there is entertainment and characters lined up constantly throughout the course.  Love Winnie the Pooh?  He’s there.  Rapunzel?  Check.  Mary Poppins?  You Betcha!   And, most with only a 1-2 minute wait!

5. See the Parks Differently – If you’ve only taken Disney Transportation around the parks, you probably don’t know where the Magic Kingdom is in relation to EPCOT or the Ticket and Transportation Center, to the resorts.  Running them, you get a different view of Disney property, and can later say “Hey, I ran there!”

4.  Tour the Parks Before they Open – Ever wanted to walk through the Magic Kingdom hours before the park opens?  Try running through Tomorrowland, Fantasyland, and Cinderella Castle while the rides are closed.  Talk about your own personal playground!

3. Guilt-Free Park Snacks and Splurges: Maybe you don’t need an excuse, but for me, splurging on an amazing post-race meal, and day after race meal without guilt is good for me!

2. Earn a Cool Medal! Each race, whether 5k or Goofy, earns the finisher a great medal. Check out all the possibilities for the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 2012!

1. An Excuse to Visit the Parks: We’ve become addicted to marathon weekend after only one trip that we’re planning to participate for years to come!  Plus, it’s during value season, so the parks are empty and lodging is discounted!

Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party: 2011 Updates

Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party: 2011 Updates

It’s almost that time! Time for a spook-tacular time at Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party!

I hear that among all your favorite party past times there will be a few new additions to the party this year.

Don’t hold your breath for anything drastic, the party hasn’t undergone an overhaul, just a few minor adjustments due to the Fantasyland expansion and the non-existence of Mickey’s ToownTown Fair.

Alice & Mad Hatter’s Treat Trail, which used to start in Toontown and end in Tomorrowland, obviously had to be relocated so it’s also been re-imagined. The treat trail is now Br’er Rabbit’s Candy Patch and is near Splash Mountain Frontierland.

Character hunters, keep your eyes on Town Square Theatre (Mickey’s new meet n’ greet home) this is where you’ll find Disney Princesses. Outside near the flagpole you’ll find Duffy the Disney Bear and Winnie the Pooh and Friends. If you seek the fairest of them all and her Seven Dwarfs, you’ll find them in Frontierland as well.

The dance parties will still take place throughout the park, this is a fun place to get a unique interaction with your favorite characters. The Villain Mix and Mingle has a few “tweaks and shrieks” as well as musical changes and new costumes.

If you’re planning your party transformation to happen in the parks you need to book ASAP. The Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique and the Pirates League are incredibly popular on party days and even with the extended hours (8pm) they still fill fast. Call 407-WDW-STYLE to arrange for your transformation. A credit card hold is required but no charge will be made to your card. Cancellation less than 24 hours prior to your scheduled time will result in a $10 cancellation fee being charged to the card on file.

Downtown Disney removes signs, props from Pleasure Island buildings

Downtown Disney removes signs, props from Pleasure Island buildings
Pleasure Island at Downtown Disney, Walt Disney World Resort.

It’s yet another sign – or lack of signs thereof – that Walt Disney World is moving ahead with Hyperion Wharf makeover. Or at least Disney is committed to finally removing signs of what was once Pleasure Island, the night-time entertainment area of Downtown Disney (DTD).

Disney has removed signs and props from several buildings that used to be the cornerstones of Pleasure Island’s nightlife for adult guests and Orlando locals.

WDW Magic reports that, as of Aug. 30, signs have been removed from Comedy Warehouse, BET Soundstage and the Adventures Club. The props that were outside the Adventurers Club, including the plane remnants, have also been removed.

There has been no official word for Disney as to what these changes mean, although speculations on Disney fans sites run the gamut from the pending demolition of the buildings to some sort of rehabilitation of the buildings.

The speculation is, in part, fueled by an Aug. 19 response to fans posted on the Disney Parks Blog.

Tom Staggs, Chairman for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, had posted a “thank you” to Disney fans who are also D23 Expo attendees, referring to the presentation concerning the parks and resorts upcoming expansions. Many Disney fans expressed disappointment that there had been no significant, new announcements about Walt Disney World, DTD and Pleasure Island. Staggs, in an unusual move, responded to reader concerns:

Thanks to all of you for your responses. Your passion, energy and affection for our parks and resorts is [sic] the reason we do what we do so I appreciate your feedback. I know many of you were hoping for announcements regarding new projects from Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, especially at Walt Disney World Resort, so I wanted to take a moment to address those comments.

The projects we’ve already announced represent the largest period of growth ever in Disney Parks’ history. We’re working hard to create new and exciting experiences for our guests around the world and while the timing isn’t always right to announce another big project, we like to use opportunities like the D23 Expo to update fans like you on the great progress we’re making. We have several incredible projects currently in the works and look forward to sharing more information with all of you in the weeks and months ahead, including new details regarding Downtown Disney in Florida. [emphasis added]

Pleasure Island opened in 1989 but closed for good in 2008. In November 2010, Disney announced the area would receive a makeover as Hyperion Wharf, a waterfront district focusing on eateries and boutiques. In July, Disney announced that plans for the area were being delayed, for undisclosed reasons.

Top Five Places to Hide Out at Walt Disney World.

Top Five Places to Hide Out at Walt Disney World.

As much as I love Disney World, I sometimes need a little break from the frenzy of the parks.  Here are my favorite places to hide out and get away from it all.  Shhhh, don’t tell anyone, okay?

1. Tom Sawyer Island. This underrated spot is full of quiet, cool spots to lounge around or explore.  If the Magic Kingdom gets too crowded, hop on a raft and head over.  You can even bring a snack from the “mainland” and find a little spot with a chair and watch the world go by on the other side of the river.

2.  Baby Care Centers. Okay, this one is tough because you need a baby (under 3-ish) to use these centers, located in all four parks, but if you’ve got a tot in tow, they can be more than just a place where you can change your baby.   There’s a quiet area where she can eat (highchairs are provided) and toddle around safely while you enjoy the cool air conditioning and quiet.

3.  The Library at Kidani Village. The library at Kidani Village, part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, is one of the most private public areas on property. I’m not sure why it’s called a library–it doesn’t have any books. But it does have a beautiful fireplace and comfy couches where you can sit and enjoy a book or just look out on the Savanna. I visited here during my trip in December, and hated to leave.  Best of all, it’s almost always empty.

4.  The Carousel of Progress.  This is one of my favorite attractions, but it’s also a great place to decompress; even little kids snuggle in and relax for a bit. The familiarity of the scenes, the music and the narration all add to the experience.  It’s a must-do on every trip.

5.  The lobby of the Grand Floridian Now, I know that the Grand Floridian isn’t what most of you think of when you think “relaxing.”  You probably think it’s formal and stuffy. Well I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong. It’s Disney, so it can’t be stuffy and even though the resort itself appears to be quite formal, it’s actually just as welcoming as any other Disney resort. Next time you’re in the Magic Kingdom and you need a quick break, hop on the monorail and head on over. Have a snack or a quick lunch and just relax and take it all in. The lobby is cool, the surroundings are beautiful, right up to the soaring ceiling.  I promise you that you won’t feel uncomfortable just stopping by for a quick visit.  Then just get on the boat and head back to the park.
