Zootopia Celebrates 1 Year Anniversary at Shanghai Disneyland

One year ago, Zootopia opened at Shanghai Disney Resort, bringing the magic of the animated film to life. We’ve spent the past year enjoying delicious Pawpsicles, zooming through Zootopia: Hot Pursuit, and singing along to “Zootopia, We Love You” with the residents.

Although Zootopia is the most immersive land yet at Shanghai Disney Resort, it’s the fans who really made this special place come to life! To celebrate the momentous occasion, we’ve run the numbers to mark how your fandom was one for the books.

Cruisers Zip Around the World

When Zootopia: Hot Pursuit opened, it brought the resort’s most advanced Audio-Animatronics figures, plus the first ever trackless ride system in Mainland China. It’s been such a hit that the cruisers have accumulated a total mileage of approximately 220,000 miles. That means they could have driven around the earth’s equator almost 8 times!

Changing the World One Detail at a Time

From a barber shop with sheep trimmings to a bank for animals of all kinds, every corner of Zootopia is packed with detail. There’s even a giraffe running on a treadmill who ran over 26,000 miles in just the last year. And the innovative “hyper-tubes” the Lemmings use to get to work at Lemmings Brothers Bank? They’ve commuted over 2.1 million passengers!

A Tower-Sized Love for Food

Zootopia finally coming to life meant that we were going to be able to try a real Disney Zootopia Pawpsicle!!! It’s clear fans visiting the land were just as excited as we were as it was among the top three most beloved foods, along with Corn Flavored Popcorn and the mini size of The Big Donut. If you were to arrange side-by-side the total number of these donuts sold in the last year, it would equate to approximately eight times the height of Shanghai Tower — the tallest building in Shanghai.

Wild Place of Merchandise

The merchandise possibilities were endless and the development teams simply had to try everything, introducing nearly 260 Zootopia-themed items. The most popular were the Judy Bucket Hat, Judy & Nick Walkie Talkie, Judy Hood Blanket, Nick Hood Blanket and Nick Fluffy Hat.

Zootopia Comes Alive for the Seasons

The year came with a few more firsts, including celebrating the various seasons. From Disney Zootopia Yoga Show in the spring to “Howl-o-Ween” in the fall and the Winter Snow-Ball Festival, we confirmed Zootopia is a must visit any time of year.

Bringing Home Awards

For the first time-ever, Zootopia became a tangible place where you could zip through the districts on Zootopia: Hot Pursuit or chat with the residents from their windows. Through continuous innovation and creativity, it led the way in industry standards and advanced development. Since its opening, Zootopia has already received multiple awards at home and abroad:

Expanded Seating Area at Woody’s Lunchbox Officially Open!

After months of anticipation, the expanded seating area at Woody’s Lunchbox in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is now fully open! Guests can finally enjoy more space to relax and dine at the popular Toy Story Land quick-service spot.

The construction, which began in September, saw the entire seating area at Woody’s Lunchbox completely demolished to make way for this much-needed upgrade. A portion of the new seating area opened to guests last month, but now the finishing touches are complete, and the full area is ready for use.

The new seating area offers additional tables and shade, providing a welcome relief for guests navigating the often-busy Toy Story Land. While the expanded area adds convenience and comfort, the temporary tables near the entrance to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge remain in place for now, offering even more options for guests looking to enjoy their Totchos or grilled cheese sandwiches.

The transformation of Magic Kingdom’s Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island is moving forward, with Walt Disney World submitting revised plans to the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD). This marks the latest step in Disney’s journey to turn these classic park areas into an all-new “Cars”-themed land.

Disney Submits Magic Kingdom Transformation Plans to South Florida Water Management District 1

In response to SFWMD’s Request for Additional Information (RAI), Disney submitted a 23-page document addressing comments on the project. While the updated plans don’t reveal significant changes, they include new diagrams and details that bring the project’s scope into sharper focus. One of the most notable updates confirms that the iconic Rivers of America will be filled in to make way for the new expansion. The waterway will be filled to an elevation of 98.75 feet, with surface water redirected to a newly constructed pond to ensure proper stormwater management.

The plans also include a table of wetland and mitigation data, a basin drain report, and other technical documents that address the environmental and structural aspects of the transformation. These updates come after SFWMD initially flagged 20 issues with Disney’s permit application, citing concerns about wetland impacts, stormwater management, and local wildlife.

Disney was given a 90-day deadline to address the RAI, and after requesting an extension, filed their updated plans on December 19, 2024. SFWMD now has 30 days to review the submission and decide if additional information is needed or if the plans can move forward.

If approved, construction is expected to kick off in early 2025, marking the beginning of a significant change for Magic Kingdom. Box office figures indicate that Walt Disney Company has reclaimed its position as a dominant force in Hollywood. This success is attributed to the combined revenue generated by Disney Studios, 20th Century Studios, and Searchlight Pictures.

This marks the second time since 2019 that Disney has surpassed the $2 billion box office milestone. Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” has made a substantial impact, achieving the 11th highest-grossing film status in the U.S. and solidifying its position as the top-grossing animated film domestically. The film’s popularity was evident from the start, boasting the second-largest opening weekend for an animated film in history.

Marvel Studios’ highly anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine currently ranks second among the highest-grossing films of 2024 and holds the twelfth position in U.S. box office earnings.

Moana 2 has also achieved significant success, ranking fifth among the highest-grossing films of 2024, despite a mixed reception from some fans.

Disney’s 20th Century Studios has also seen significant success with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and Alien: Romulus. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes has grossed an impressive $171 million domestically, while Alien: Romulus has earned $105 million.

New Disneyland Turnstiles Open for ‘Pre-Launch,’ Officially Opening in 2025

Disneyland began a limited trial run of its innovative new entrance turnstiles (tapstyles) on Tuesday. A full-scale launch with all features operational is scheduled for early 2025.

Disney began upgrading its entrance gates in December 2023 with the filing of necessary permits. Construction commenced at Disney California Adventure in early 2024, followed by Disneyland in the fall. While some gates at Disney California Adventure were completed earlier, only the new Disneyland Park gates are currently open to guests.

The term ‘tapstiles’ is a blend of ‘tap’ and ‘turnstiles,’ reflecting the shift from traditional turnstiles to the new tap-based technology. As reported by Scott Gustin, the gates are currently in a pre-launch phase, with full functionality expected early next year. During this period, Cast Members are stationed at the tapstiles to manually scan tickets and capture guest photos using tablets, mirroring the current process at the existing gates.

Disneyland Resort previously tested a facial recognition entry system at Disney California Adventure in March 2024. While this technology is not currently in use, the new gates appear to be designed for future implementation of facial recognition. The presence of screens with built-in cameras mounted on the tapstiles suggests this possibility.

When activated, the screens on the Disneyland Park gates showcase a vibrant icon of Sleeping Beauty Castle. When inactive, a playful image of Mickey Mouse with a surprised expression appears, accompanied by the message “Oh boy! This gate is not available.” The black lines observed in the provided images are a photographic effect and do not exist in reality.

The physical gates are transparent with a subtle frosted finish and delicate filigree bordering their edges. The design is understated, featuring stars and elegant swirls. A decal affixed to the sides of the tapstiles informs guests of potential chemical exposure within Disneyland. This type of warning has been a common sight throughout Disneyland Resort for several years in compliance with Proposition 65 regulations.

The Disney California Adventure screens showcase Mickey’s Fun Wheel, also known as Pixar Pal-A-Round. It’s likely that Disney chose to open the gates ahead of their full functionality to increase the number of available entrances during the busy holiday season.
