VisitScotland and Disney announce marketing campaign for upcoming Disney•Pixar’s Brave

VisitScotland and Disney announce marketing campaign for upcoming Disney•Pixar's Brave

VisitScotland, Scotland’s tourism organisation, and The Walt Disney Company Europe, Middle East & Africa today announced a unique global marketing campaign to promote Scottish tourism around the much-anticipated Disney•Pixar film “Brave”, which is set in the Scottish Highlands and features some of Scotland’s biggest stars..

This marks the very first time that Disney has teamed up on this scale with a country’s tourism organisation around the launch of one of its films. VisitScotland and Disney will begin working immediately to create a global marketing campaign around the new animated adventure, which is released around the world this summer, and comes from the team behind box office smashes such as “Toy Story”, “Up” and “Finding Nemo”.

This will include multi-media activities such as joint TV and cinema advertising across the UK, North America and Europe, PR opportunities, digital marketing and events including premieres and screenings that will continue through the film’s home entertainment release..The campaign will see Scotland’s scenery, humour and culture showcased on an unprecedented scale and will position Scotland on the world stage in a way not seen since “Braveheart”.

VisitScotland Chairman, Mike Cantlay, said: “This is an incredible opportunity to extend the reach of VisitScotland’s marketing activity across the world.  This film will be shown in more than 70 countries across the world and will give us the opportunity to convert cinema goers into visitors in the biggest campaign VisitScotland has ever launched.

“There are very few tourism destinations that get to work so closely with the world’s largest entertainment companies – and this gives us an unprecedented opportunity to put Scotland on the worldwide stage with a whole new audience.”
Tricia Wilber, chief marketing officer, The Walt Disney Company Europe, Middle East & Africa said: “Brave takes its inspiration from the majesty and mystery of Scotland, and features the voices of many much-loved Scottish stars, so it’s fitting to create a global campaign with VisitScotland to further bring to life the iconic Scottish landscapes and folklore that inspired the film.”

Brave is an amazing magical adventure with larger than life characters – including Scotland itself. During our research, we learned that everything in Scotland tells a story – every stone, tree, mountain – which is why we are so proud that this beautiful country is the backdrop of our film” said Mark Andrews, director of “Brave.”

Tapping into Scotland’s rich history of epic battles and mystical legends, “Brave” features a new flame haired heroine, the courageous Merida (the voice of Kelly Macdonald), who confronts tradition and challenges destiny to change her fate.
Merida is a skilled archer and impetuous daughter of King Fergus (voice of Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (voice of Emma Thompson). Determined to carve her own path in life, Merida defies an age-old custom sacred to the uproarious lords of Scotland: massive Lord MacGuffin (voice of Kevin McKidd), surly Lord Macintosh (voice of Craig Ferguson) and cantankerous Lord Dingwall (voice of Robbie Coltrane). Merida’s actions inadvertently unleash chaos and fury in the family, and when she turns to an eccentric Witch  for help, she is granted an ill-fated wish. The ensuing peril forces Merida to discover the meaning of true bravery in order to undo a beastly curse before it’s too late.

“Brave” is directed by Mark Andrews (“Ratatouille” and “The Incredibles”) and Brenda Chapman (“The Lion King” and “Prince of Egypt”), produced by Katherine Sarafian (“The Incredibles” and “Lifted”) and scored by renowned Scottish composer, Patrick Doyle. “Brave” is a grand adventure full of heart, memorable characters and the signature Pixar humour enjoyed by audiences of all ages. The film takes aim at UK cinemas in August 2012, and will be presented in Disney Digital 3D™ in select cinemas.

Disney Work Planning Tips for Plus Sized Travelers

Disney Work Planning Tips for Plus Sized Travelers

What to do when one size doesn’t fit all?

With millions of visitors from around the world, it would be impossible to fabricate accommodations that would be ideal for everyone in Disney parks. If the “one size fits all” philosophy doesn’t apply to you, don’t worry, you aren’t out of luck.

There are three main areas where the majority of size worries may arise: rooms, restaurants and rides. In true Disney style…there really is something and somewhere for everyone; let’s look at what Disney is doing to make their parks fit for everyone.

  1. Rooms: If you would prefer a king sized bed, be sure to request one at the time of your reservation.. Rooms with king beds are becoming increasingly limited so if this is important to you, be sure to note it up front. While the Disney resorts have all of that Disney magic you’ve come to love, they may not have the square footage you have become accustomed to. Value resorts generally have the same square footage (approximately 260 sq ft) the moderates vary in size. To view the room layouts and footage and take a virtual tour click here. Caribbean Beach offers the most space (340 square feet) and the other moderates have 314 square feet.
  2. Restaurants: When you make your dining reservations, request a table or booth, whatever is more comfortable for you and when you check in at your restaurant, make your request again with the host or hostess. There are chairs without arms available at most restaurants. If you have any additional concerns about your dining experience, ask a cast member; they should either assist you, or find someone who can.
  3. Rides: If there is ever any doubt that one size doesn’t fit all, take a visit to Fantasyland. These rides are built for little one’s and you’ll find the accommodations are suited for pint sized prince’s and petite princesses. Look around the attraction before you get in line and see if you think the space is adequate for you, some attractions have ride cars outside so you can physically “test drive” them. Disney is always focused on safety first, ask a cast member for a seatbelt extender if you aren’t comfortable with the standard lap belt. Here’s a fast fact-Rock’n Roller Coaster and Test Track have more leg room in the front cars, Space Mountain has more leg room in the back car.

Of course there are far more needs than fit into these categories, so here are a few extra tips:

  • The restrooms will all have a limited amount of handicapped accessible stalls which will give you more space.
  • The turn styles at the park gates aren’t the only way in, ask to go through the stroller gates if you’re worried about fitting through the turn style.
  • Know your options-Different rides and attractions offer different types of seating (lap bar, overhead bar, theatre seating, etc) know what doesn’t work for you and ask a cast member if alternatives are available.
  • Check weight and activity restrictions on tours and special experiences, for example horseback riding and the Segway tour have a limit of 250lbs.
  • If you have a specific worry that isn’t listed, ask a cast member, or your Disney travel agent or do some research online. Our friends over at Passporter have an entire forum dedicated to “Pooh sized” travelers and they have unlimited tips, tricks and resources!

Avoid the Disney Diva Meltdowns at Walt Disney World

Avoid the Disney Diva Meltdowns at Walt Disney World

Melt-down – (official definition) “Severe overheating of a nuclear reactor core, resulting in melting of the core and escape of radiation.”

Disney World MeltDown (Diva definition) “The actions that result from being tired, hot, hungry, having aching feet, being over-stimulated, saying no to your greedy kids for the 1,000th time, dealing with a nagging spouse, and knowing that you spent a lot of money to be at WDW.

WDW Melt-Downs usually manifest themselves in the park as:

  • Yelling/Snapping at anyone in your party regardless of what they asked you or who else is around.
  • Talking ANGRILY through your teeth (usually involves some eyes bugging out and a furrowed brow and temples pulsing), <Beware the Diva’s Teeth Talking, it’s pretty fierce>”
  •  Snatching” things up (things can include: children, items, toys, drinks, or anything else its possible to grab in an angry way).
  •  Bench-planting. Where the person simply refuses to go further and plants themselves on a bench or table. Only slightly less irritating when its an adult than when it is a child.
  • The HASTY retreat. Usually occurs when one or both parents have simply “HAD ENOUGH” and they half-drag their children while stomping their feet out to the car/bus.
  • The sob-fest/ screaming uncontrollably. Slightly MORE irritating in this case when it is an adult instead of a child, however 100% possible to see/ experience as an adult.
  • Prime Time for Melt Downs– 3:00pm. “The WDW Witching Hour”. WDW Melt-Downs happen. They are unavoidable should you be there with or without children. It doesn’t matter how good of a planner you are, how well behaved you or your children “normally” are.

This. Is. DISNEY WORLD. It doesn’t make you a bad parent if your kids (or you) completely “lose it” in a park.

So, what to do WHEN one of these melt-downs rears its ugly head?

In case of EMERGENCY: BREAK G.L.A.S.S.

  • GIVE permission for melt-downs/cool downs to occur. Limit the amounts of melt-downs each person is entitled to have. Give people a time limit that they can be mad. Also, realize your kids are over-stimulated. So give them small breaks and just go and sit together under a tree and watch the birds fight over the popcorn kernels in front of Casey’s Corner, if your kids are old enough, give them small breaks and meet back up.
  • LISTEN to your body. Are you sweating through your clothes? When was the last time you ate anything? Is your family’s non-verbal communication changing (crossing arms, rolling eyes, huffing, pushing in the stroller), do your children have a vacant look in their eyes? Time to head off that melt-down. First step is to find someplace to SIT that is COOL (as in air-conditioned). Standing in a line does NOT work here, try one of these Quiet Places in Magic Kingdom to take a break.
  • ASK how everybody is doing. COMMUNICATE and ask your family frequently for a “check up” on how they are doing. Disney World is Huge, you’re not going to get it all in on one trip. Just do what you can and concentrate on QUALITY of time OVER QUANITY of rides (read this post if you are silently disagreeing with me). Ask how they feel on a scale of one to 10 frequently and honestly. If at any point anybody drops to a 5 or below slow down and re-evaluate.
  • STEP outside yourself. Step-outside of yourself and really THINK about what is happening. Ask yourself, “is this something any normal, rational, and normally-enjoyable to be around, person would do?” If the answer is no then think… why?? What happened in the time leading UP to the melt-down occurred? Did you tell your teenager you would go ride a ride later then never come back to it? Did you tell your aging parents to hurry up? Did you tell your wife to stop spending money, then buy a giant turkey leg for yourself? Before you react, THINK. What role do YOU have in the meltdown? What role do THEY have? Are you turning them into the villain? I mean, do you think your 5 year old is sitting around plotting HOW to ruin your day? Think before you react, apologize if warranted.  Sincere apologies turn most every situation around.
  • STOP before you all act STUPID.  Stop doing the mental math you lil’ engineers, accountants and extreme type-A personalities about how much each minute you are not in the park is costing you and remember WHY YOU ARE AT WDW IN THE FIRST PLACE. You are on a VACATION!

Let me assure you that your “hissy fit” is going to be remembered by your family members FAR longer and more vividly than how many rides they rode that day, much less the actual contents of each ride/meal/ or character greeting. All that most of you will remember is the photographs and if you all look miserable in those just GUESS how the trip will be remembered. You talk about wasting money. You can read more about this on my post Quantity of Rides VS Quality of Life.

Get out of the parks during the heat of the day and come back refreshed and ready to tackle the park. Switch parks after your mid-day cool down if you have park-hopper tickets (which I recommend in my post HERE on ticket options) so you can to keep things exciting and new. Remember WHY you are spending the money, not HOW MUCH money you are spending. If everybody is miserable it’s not much of a trip. And I’d say it’s the #1 reason why most people don’t return to WDW.

WDW is intended to be a dream world where your heroes are real and your family is even MORE so. So remember when that next melt-down starts trying to creep up on you. Just break the G.L.A.S.S. and do what is RIGHT by your family.

Top 5 Walt Disney World Attractions that are Underrated

Top 5 Walt Disney World Attractions that are Underrated

Anyone planning a trip to Disney or who has been there before knows that are certain attractions that get a lot of attention and fill up the queues really quick. Therefore, some other Disney attractions that may not offer the latest technology or the biggest thrills sometimes get overlooked and are definitely underrated. This is unfortunate since some of Disney’s best secrets are underrated attractions. Therefore, I have compiled a list of Top 5 Underrated Disney World Attractions for you to check out on your next trip to Disney World!

1. Carousel of Progress-This attraction came from the mind of Walt Disney himself and was shown at the 1964 New York World’s Fair to raving reviews! Today, this show still runs in Tomorrowland at the Magic Kingdom and has the honor of being the longest running show in American theater! The Carousel of Progress is unique in that the theater rotates around to different stages where you get to see how progress and new inventions impacted daily life in the early twentieth century. This charming show is both educational and entertaining. It’s usually not at the top of many Disney guest to-do lists; but it definitely should be! All ages enjoy it and it gives us a glimpse into the mind of Walt Disney himself.

2. TTA-This attraction is a favorite among Disney regulars, and it’s one of my personal all-time favorites too. The Tomorrowland Transit Authority WedWay People Mover has guests board a vehicle which takes you on a covered track all around Tomorrowland and even into some of the buildings and attractions! This attraction is rather simple in that the gentle ride and the view is the primary draw; but its underrated because it’s so enjoyable! Our family likes to hop on the TTA to get off our feet, enjoy the breeze you get from moving down the track, and enjoy good conversation. The seats in each car face each other which is ideal for chatting and planning the rest of the day. It’s also a great attraction for parents who have tired kids or who just need a break from the heat and crowds.

3. The American Adventure-This attraction is an audio-animatronic show located at the American Adventure pavilion at Epcot. I think this show gets overlooked as most of the attention focuses on the Magic Kingdom’s Hall of Presidents; but the American Adventure is just as good, if not better, with it’s elaborate sets and variety of American heroes. In fact, one of the audio-animatronics actually twirls a lasso! This patriotic show is moving, entertaining, and I believe it’s a must-see for any Disney guest!

4. Living with the Land-Living with the Land is a gentle boat ride located inside The Land pavilion at Epcot. This attraction educates guest about the earth and different landscapes before taking them through greenhouses where guests witness new agricultural methods. Adults will find it very interesting; and kids will enjoy the ride and seeing Mickey shaped pumpkins being grown!

5. Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse-This classic Disney attraction is based off of the Disney film which was based off of the famous novel! This attraction is one of the most comfortable, innovative treehouses you have ever seen! At The Swiss Family Robinson Treehouse, you walk through the different rooms in this tree and see how the Robinsons used whatever they had to make a home, such as a huge seashell for a sink! There are tons of detail and clever egineering everywhere so be sure to take your time and keep your eyes open!

So what do you think? Do you think these attractions are underrated? Are any of these attractions some of your favorites?

Mariah Carey Christens the Disney Fantasy During Star-Studded NYC Ceremony

Mariah Carey Christens the Disney Fantasy During Star-Studded NYC Ceremony

The Disney Fantasy, the fourth ship in the Disney Cruise Line fleet, was christened today during a star-studded christening celebration at the Manhattan Cruise Terminal.

On a night filled with celebrity performances from the likes of Jerry Seinfeld, Neil Patrick Harris, Nick Cannon and Heather Headley, it was Disney Fantasy godmother, Mariah Carey, who took center stage for the christening moment.   Similar to the famed New Year’s Eve celebrations in Times Square, Carey led the audience in a countdown that triggered a 6-foot tall bottle of champagne in the Atrium Lobby to erupt and shower onlookers with confetti and streamers as a traditional bottle of champagne broke against the ship’s hull.

“The Disney Fantasy is a spectacular addition to our fleet and builds on the creativity, innovation and artistry that are hallmarks of the Disney Cruise Line,” said Walt Disney Company President and CEO Bob Iger. “Like her sister ship, the Dream, the Fantasy will connect guests to iconic Disney characters and storytelling, creating unforgettable, one-of-a-kind vacation experiences for the entire family.”

“At Disney Parks and Resorts, we strive to be the most trusted and highest quality provider of shared travel and leisure experiences in the world,” said Walt Disney Parks and Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs. “From stem to stern, the Disney Fantasy was designed and built with the singular purpose of surprising and delighting our guests, helping them make memories to last a lifetime.”

When the Disney Fantasy begins sailing on March 31, 2012, it will continue the innovative approach Disney Cruise line brought to family cruise vacations with a collection of new guest experiences specifically developed for the ship’s seven-night itinerary.

Highlights include:

Technological Wizardry. . .

  • Animator’s Palate on the Disney Fantasy brings the magic of Disney animation into the dining room with a new show called “Animation Magic.”  At dinner, families are encouraged to draw a character of their own on a specially designed placemat.   Once the placemats are collected, the magic begins as Mickey takes to the screens and brings the guests’ characters to life as they march across screens around the dining room and even step into scenes from beloved Disney movies side-by-side with characters such as Mickey Mouse, Jiminy Cricket, Cinderella and Snow White.
  • The Muppets are coming to the Disney Fantasy!  Guests can join the world-famous Muppets for interactive adventure quest to find missing show props by uncovering clues via more than a dozen pieces of Enchanted Art around the ship.   Guided by a map and holding a unique game card in front of select pieces of Enchanted Art, guests unveil games and clues to find the missing items.  “The Case of the Stolen Show” is a self-paced adventure game that features several possible endings and multiple randomized events – so each time a guest plays, they have a different game experience.

Splashtacular Family Fun. . .

  • Soaring above the upper decks of the Disney Fantasy, guests will find the AquaDuck a 765-foot long, twisting-and-turning water coaster that has been a huge hit with guests sailing on the Disney Dream.   Several new water surprises are set to debut on the Disney Fantasy including AquaLab — a water play area on the upper deck filled with a variety of water “experiments,” created by Donald Duck’s nephews, designed to drench, soak and saturate guests.  This fanciful 1,800-square-foot space features pop jets, geysers, bubblers, falling water, squirting walls and more.
  • On Deck 13 forward, guests 18-years of age and older will find a new relaxing respite. Behind the Tarps: Matterhorn Bobsled Refurbishment

Matterhorn Bobsleds

The Matterhorn Bobsleds opened at Disneyland Park in 1959, becoming the first tubular steel track roller coaster in the world and setting the standard for future designs to follow. The attraction was overhauled in 1978, at which time the ride vehicles were replaced and minor enhancements were made. However, no major construction has been done since.

Until now.

The Matterhorn Bobsleds are currently under a scheduled six-month refurbishment. The repairs mark the first time since its construction in 1959 that the entire mountain has been covered in scaffolding. While the outside is completely covered, Disney allowed Guests a rare peak behind the tarps.

Watch that video again. This time pause at about the 1:13 mark. Did you see that? It’s the long-rumored basketball goal! Much lore has been told about this notorious net. One of the tallest tales states that a basketball court was installed to satisfy building codes for a structure of such height and size. In reality, it was simply a makeshift hoop where workers passed idle time. Nevertheless, yes, it really is there! Enjoy this slight glimpse, though. The only folks likely to see it in person are mountain climbers, repairmen and Tinker Bell.

The Bobsleds will reopen June 15, 2012, featuring new three-rider cars—six riders per train—a new loading station to accommodate single riders and Guests with disabilities, a shimmering paint job and a refreshed interior.

Planning Your Disney Vacation: Get Your Customized Maps!

Planning Your Disney Vacation: Get Your Customized Maps!

One of the greatest things that Walt Disney World offers is the ability, every six months, to order a set of customized maps.  These special maps are made of a thicker paper, and you can put as many favorite attractions, shows, and dining locations on there as you want.  The maps are a great way to help you get your vacation plans kicked off into high gear.

I’ve been ordering the customized maps for years, and the process is extremely easy.  To do so, follow these simple steps:

  1. In order to create customized maps, you need to have a Disney World account.  If you don’t have one, the process is easy, free, and extremely beneficial.  Just make your free account at the Disney World website, or login to the website if you already have an account.
  2. After you login, you will see a small box near the bottom of your browser window that will say “Free Customized Maps.”  Click on this link to proceed to customized maps page, then click “Let’s Get Started” to begin!
  3. For each of the parks, you will be able to select your favorite attractions, shows, and dining locations.  Don’t forget to select your favorites at all four parks!  This can be misleading at times.  After you are all ready, click the “Continue” button.
  4. Next up on our list is to choose which theme you want.  You can choose between the classic look (which is shown above), or the characters, which is shown below.  The paper is the same thickness on both, but it really is a personal preference as to which you prefer.  Personally, I think the classic look is better.  Make your selection, then click continue.
  5. You can receive your maps two different ways!  You can either order them by mail and receive the maps that I’ve been describing here, or if you have already ordered maps (or don’t want to wait), you can also print them out at home.  To me it’s a thrill to be able to open my mailbox and see that special Disney Magic just waiting for us to enjoy!
  6. If you elect to order them to be mailed to your home, you’ll need to make sure that you supply your mailing address correctly so that you receive them in time.  The system tells us that it takes 2-4 weeks to receive your maps, but I really think that it actually takes less than that, or right at the 2 week time frame.

Ordering Customized Maps is a great way to enjoy a bit of Disney.  They also come with dots and a star for putting on the maps to show what your resort is! Use them to announce your Disney vacation to your children, or to “dot up” which attractions you can’t wait to see.  They are great to order even if you don’t have any Disney vacation plans yet, and just want a dose of Disney Magic at home!
