ABC Family Launches Full Episode Video App Now Available For Ipad, Iphone And Ipod Touch

ABC Family Launches Full Episode Video App Now Available For Ipad, Iphone And Ipod Touch

As part of its ongoing strategy to provide high quality content where and how consumers want it, ABC Family is now making episodes of its most popular series available across iOS devices via new ABC Family App. The new app is available for free from the App Store on iPad, iPhone and iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.

The ABC Family App, developed by the same team responsible for the creation of the critically-acclaimed ABC Player App, extends the reach of ABCFamily.com’s full episode player to provide the network’s millennial audience with a variety of convenient, portable viewing options. ABC Family viewers will have the ability to watch free, ad-supported episodes from a variety of popular ABC Family original series, including “Jane By Design,” “Pretty Little Liars,” “Switched at Birth,” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Episodes are typically available online and via the app the day after they air on the network.

The ABC Family App will feature some unique functionality, including the ability to “save and recall” the users playback position between iOS devices. The app will also be the first from the Disney/ABC Television Group (DATG) to support closed captioning.

In addition to streaming content, users will be able to purchase downloads of episodes via the iTunes Store.

Over the past several years, the Disney/ABC Television Group has consistently launched innovative apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. In April 2010, in conjunction with the debut of iPad, DATG became the first to deliver ad-supported, full-length video via the acclaimed ABC Player App. The ABC Player App was recently highlighted as one of Top 25 most downloaded free iPad apps of all time. The app has been downloaded approximately 4 million times, resulting in over 80 million episodes viewed. Other notable DATG apps include the critically-acclaimed ABC News App for iPad and the Emmy Award-winning official Oscars App, which provided unique, backstage viewing experiences for the 83rd and 84th Academy Awards.

Top 5 Ways to Beat the Heat at Disney World

Top 5 Ways to Beat the Heat at Disney World

One of the biggest problems guests encounter visiting Walt Disney World is the heat! Extreme heat and humidity can really limit your day at the parks, as well as put a drain on your wallet as you are constantly buying Mickey Premium Ice Cream Bars and drinks to cool down.

Heat can also make waiting in line and walking through the parks a real chore, especially when traveling with kids. Therefore, to provide some relief from the central Florida heat, here are my Top 5 Ways to Beat the Heat at Walt Disney World.

1. Resort Hopping – This is one of my favorite things to do at Disney World and a great activity to do during the heat of the day. After visiting Epcot or the Magic Kingdom in the morning, hop aboard a monorail and visit the deluxe resorts. You can explore some of the best resorts Disney has to offer, get some great pics, enjoy their breathtaking views, and even do a little shopping all in the shade and away from the sun!

2. Swim/Water Park – Disney offers some of the best resort pools and water parks anywhere! Many Disney pros recommend visiting the theme parks early in the morning and then coming back in the evening; and during the summer, we agree! So if you head back to your resort, visit a pool to cool off or hop aboard a bus to Typhoon Lagoon or Blizzard Beach. This is a great way to pack as much Disney fun in a day without letting the heat dominate your schedule.

3. Shopping/Downtown Disney-Who doesn’t like souvenir shopping at Disney World? When it’s hot outside, head into the variety of air-conditioned Disney shops located throughout the Disney parks and resorts! If you planning on doing some serious shopping, head to Downtown Disney’s Marketplace to visit a myriad of shops selling all kinds of merchandise. It’s a definite a must-see for anyone on vacation to Disney and what a better time than during the heat?

4. Epcot’s Future World-Future World at Epcot offers air-conditioned, indoor pavilions that you can experience at your own pace. For example, inside of the Land, you can ride Soarin’ and Living with the Land, along with the Circle of Life show, and all indoors! You can also have a snack or a meal at Sunshine Seasons, one of the best quick service locations on property. The Seas with Nemo and Friends begins with a ride in a clam shell through Nemo’s world into a huge area where you can see fish, dolphins, manatees, and more in a variety of tanks and exhibits. This pavilion is dark and cool and both kids and adults enjoy it. You can also visit and talk with Crush from Pixar’s Finding Nemo here at Turtle Talk with Crush! Finally, check out Club Cool at Future World, a pavilion housing Coca-Cola merchandise and soda fountains offering different sodas from around the world! The best thing is that you can sample these soft drinks as much as you want and it’s all free! This is definitely a great place to cool off!

5. Animation Academy-Located at Hollywood Studios, Animation Academy is located in the Animation Courtyard in Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  At the Magic of Disney Animation you have lots of opportunities to see the animation process from start to finish.  You can view a film starring Mulan’s pal Mushu, meet and greet with characters, and there are even some activities for kids! The Animation Academy may just be the hidden gem of the pavilion.  Even though it fills up it is often passed by by people interested in meeting the characters in the pavilion or who only stopped in to beat the heat!

So what do you think? What is your favorite way to keep cool at Disney World?

Disney Fantasy Arrives Home at Port Canaveral

Disney Fantasy Arrives Home at Port Canaveral

Disney Cruise Line welcomed its fourth ship, the Disney Fantasy, early this morning to its new homeport in Port Canaveral, Fla. after a 19-day trans-Atlantic voyage from Germany and a stop in New York for its Christening last week. With the addition of the Disney Fantasy, Port Canaveral and the region is experiencing sizeable economic benefits. The Disney Fantasy is expected to generate more than 500 direct, indirect and induced jobs in the area and attract thousands of additional cruise guests to the port, according to an economic impact study by Martin Associates.

“Not only is the arrival of the Disney Fantasy an important milestone for our business, it will also have a positive impact on the Central Florida community,” said Karl Holz, president of Disney Cruise Line. “With our fourth ship, we are able to generate more jobs and economic activity for the region while delivering even more cruising options for families to share unforgettable cruise experiences with us.”

To accommodate the expanded operation, new ships and increase in guest capacity, Disney Cruise Line worked with Port Canaveral to expand the dock area and terminal facility in early 2011. Along with the construction of a new parking structure and a sky bridge walkway, guests experience a state-of-the-art facility, making the transition from land to sea relatively seamless.

“We are excited to welcome the Disney Fantasy home,” said Port Canaveral Chief Executive Officer Stan Payne. “The arrival of the Disney Dream last year made a significant economic impact on Central Florida and we know the Disney Fantasy will add to that dramatically. We have seen our local businesses benefit when a ship of this magnitude and special Disney magic becomes part of our community.”

Beginning with its maiden voyage on March 31, the Disney Fantasy will embark on seven-night sailings, alternating between Eastern and Western Caribbean itineraries, with a stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s own private island in The Bahamas.

With a tonnage of 130,000 and a guest capacity of up to 4,000, the Disney Fantasy is the second of two new, and significantly larger, ships that are being added to the Disney fleet. The Disney Dream arrived in early 2011 and is currently sailing three-, four- and five-night itineraries to the Bahamas, also from Port Canaveral.

Disney Cruise Line established the blue-print for family cruising when the business launched in 1998.  The first two ships, the Disney Magic and Disney Wonder, which were launched in 1998 and 1999, respectively, were purposely built for families to reconnect, adults to recharge and kids to immerse themselves in worlds of fantasy only Disney can create.

With the addition of the two new ships, Disney Cruise Line will celebrate 2012 with its most diverse sailing itineraries to date. New in 2012, the Disney Magic will offer eight-night cruises to the Bahamas and five-night cruises up the New England coast sailing from New York, and seven-night western Caribbean itineraries departing from Galveston, Texas. The Disney Wonder will continue sailing seven-night Mexican Riviera cruises from the Port of Los Angeles, while spending its second summer sailing Alaskan itineraries from Seattle.

Most recently, the Disney Dream won the top spot for “Best Bahamas Cruises” and “Best Cabins” in the 2012 Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Awards.  Disney Cruise Line was recognized by the readers of Condé Nast Traveler magazine as the top “Cruise Ships of the World,” with the Disney Magic being voted No. 1 and the Disney Dream and Disney Wonder tying for No. 2. Travel + Leisure magazine also ranked Disney Cruise Line the No. 1 Large-Ship Cruise Line for Families.

Disney World Quick Tips – Don’t waste those Snack Credits.

Disney World Quick Tips - Don't waste those Snack Credits.

The number one rule you should follow with Disney Dining Plan Snack Credits is this!

Don’t buy drinks with it.

It’s an easy mistake to make. You’re tired and hot and probably don’t think twice about handing the cast member your room key card, but that drink only costs around $2.59.  If you purchased the dining plan, you probably did so to save money, and this move just put you in the red, at least as far as snacks go.  You can use your snack credits to buy more expensive treats or even put together a small meal if you’re careful.

Make sure you don’t use your snack credits for anything that costs less than $3.  Instead, pay out of pocket for those items.  To maximize your value on the dining plan, your goal should be to purchase snacks at around the $4 range or slightly lower.

For example you can buy a side of chilli at Casey’s Corner in the Magic Kingdom or a delicious cupcake (that is so huge, you can split it) at Starring Rolls Cafe in Hollywood Studios for just one snack credit. (See picture above)  Healthy snacks like fruit, yogurt, and small milks are great choices for keeping your energy levels up, but they generally cost less than $2.  Consider buying those items at a grocery store off-site or Garden Grocer delivery service (see a list of stores and delivery services here).

Even if you don’t have a refrigerator, individual cartons of shelf stable milk can be a huge savings if your kids are like mine and drink a ton of milk. Which reminds me did you hear the news? All WDW Value Resorts will now have a Fridge

The dining plan just got more expensive for 2012, but you can still beat the cost and make it work in your favor. You’ll just need to think it out a little bit beforehand. Stay tuned for more tips on how to make the dining plan work.

Disney Cruise Tips for First Timers

Disney Cruise Tips for First Timers

My family and I just got back from an amazing cruise on the Disney Dream and I have some first timer tips to share with you. Use these at your own discretion 🙂

Transportation:

  • We flew into Orlando the night before our cruise so we didn’t risk flight delays impacting our trip. We didn’t want to pay the $70 per person charge that Disney charges for round trip transfers, that can add up quick!
  • We priced out various services and found that renting a car was our cheapest option. We were able to get the car from the airport and have it that entire day before our cruise and we returned it at the Enterprise station the morning of our cruise and they shuttled us directly to the port. After the cruise was over they were there to shuttle us back to Enterprise and we took the car back to the airport. This was about half of the cost and we loved having the car the night before so we could go shopping and get some carry on items for the cruise.

Get there early:

  • The morning of our cruise we woke up and couldn’t wait to get onto that amazing Disney Dream ship! We had previously registered online and had a check in time given to us of 1:30 but I had been told we could get on earlier, so that was the plan! We wanted to get an early boarding time so we went up to the 3rd floor of the parking garage by 10:15 a.m. and found the VERY small line of people there waiting to go into the terminal. They opened the doors and let us in by 10:30 a.m. We were in boarding number 3 which got us onto the ship and eating lunch by 12:15.

Packing:

  • We had packed swimsuits for the kids into our carry on so after an incredible lunch at Cabanas we headed into the restrooms and got into our swimsuits and were able to ride the Aqua duck multiple times without a line.
  • Did you know that Disney will allow you to carry alcohol on board with you? We went to Publix before boarding our cruise and I purchased 2 bottles of wine and my husband purchased a bottle of rum. We placed these (wrapped in our swimsuits) into our carry on and rolled them right onto the ship with us. I also was able to get a wine glass from room service and I would pour a glass of wine and take it into the dining room with me or up onto the deck to sit in a lounge chair while watching the ocean go by, now that was awesome! This was a great money saver for us!

Look for future articles from me with even more money and time saving tips to make the most of your Disney Cruise Line vacation!

Top 10 Table Service Meals at the WDW Resorts

Top 10 Table Service Meals at the WDW Resorts

When planning your Advance Dining Reservations (or ADR’S) for your Walt Disney World meals, there are so many choices that it can be hard to figure out where to begin! One thing I always strongly recommend is that you plan a few meals outside the Theme Parks (why, you might ask? Check out my article on why eating outside the parks is worth the trip).

Here are my Top Ten choices for Table Service Meals at the WDW Resort Hotels (in no particular order!):

1. Boma – This one came to my mind first out of all the Disney restaurant choice….why? Because it’s different and delicious! It’s a buffet style eatery located at Disney’s beautiful Animal Kingdom Lodge that serves up traditional African style cuisines like Bobotie (a sort of spicy/sweet meaty quiche!), watermelon rind salad, and the infamous Zebra Dome dessert. They serve up breakfast and dinner daily, and when I went for dinner I tried a little of everything and liked every single thing I tried! From the salads to the soups and meats and desserts everything is delicious here, and its a great place to try something new!

2. Beaches and Cream – Come here for delicious burgers and sandwiches in a casual setting, and end your meal with their specialty – those two little words that seal the deal and make this place a true winner – ICE CREAM! Their sundaes are to die for, and big enough to share! Located at the Beach Club Resort, Beaches and Cream is the home of the infamous Kitchen Sink, a dessert big enough for a family of 4 and then some!

3. California Grill – Come here for the fresh sushi, flatbread pizzas, and amazing views of the Magic Kingdom. Located at the top of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, this is one of Disney’s “Signature” Restaurants (meaning it will cost you more per meal, or 2 Table Service Credits per person on the Disney Dining Plan), and in my opinion it’s worth every penny! Imagine sipping wine from their large selection while watching an amazing fireworks show happen right before your eyes…the view, the food, the drinks, it all adds up to make California Grill an amazing experience

4. Hoop Dee Doo Musical Review – This dinner show wins a spot on the list for being the Best Entertainment – it’s a Wild West themed show full of lively fun, song and dance, and all you can eat ribs and fried chicken! Oh, and they serve unlimited beer and wine too! To get to the show you’ll have to travel to one of my favorite places to stay, a href=http://www.chipandco.com/planning/guide-to-disney-world/resorts/disney-moderate-resort-hotels/fort-wilderness-campgrounds-cabins/>Fort Wilderness, a beautiful resort/campground nestled among trees and walking trails, its a great place to visit and spend an evening (or your whole vacation!)

5. Victoria and Albert’s – This 5 start restaurant is located at the Grand Floridian Resort, and is one of the only restaurants on Disney property that has a strict dress code stating that men must wear dinner jackets. The food is as classy and amazing as the attire, as it is changed often to keep it different, fresh, and exciting! They offer wine pairings for an additional fee (with a large wine list to choose from!) to compliment the exquisite cuisine. It’s an expensive place to eat, but it’s worth it – especially if you have something special to celebrate!

6. Kona Cafe – In my opinion this is one of the best kept secrets of Disney Dining! Should you find yourself at the Polynesian Resort, you should definitely grab a meal here – their signature Kona coffee paired with their drool-inducing Tonga Toast will ensure your morning is off to a great start! For lunch and dinner they are serving up dishes with a Polynesian flair like pot stickers, asian vegetable slaw, and their amazing sticky wings. Kona Café is less popular than it’s next door neighbor Ohana, but I still recommend you make an ADR here so you don’t run the risk of missing out on all they have to offer

7. Yachtsman Steakhouse – Serving up an amazing dinner over at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort that includes salmon, truffle mac and cheese, and – you guessed it- several different cuts of steak. This is another Signature Restaurant, and with good reason – the atmosphere is upscale and so is the food, they do it all well, including the steak! After your meal you can take a stroll around the ground of the idyllic Yacht Club Resort. A perfect meal that makes for a perfect evening!

8. Cape May Cafe – Another winner at the Beach Club Resort, this buffet is a character meal by day, serving up a buffet style breakfast with Goofy and friends sporting their beach gear, and a delicious seafood buffet at night that’s character free but full of flavor! The “Clam Bake Dinner Buffet” features clams, mussels, crab legs, and for those who aren’t into seafood – BBQ ribs and roast chicken. End the meal with some of Cape May’s signature oreo bon bons or one of their many other sweet treats!

9. Big River Grille & Brewing Works – This one is for all you beer lovers out there! Head over to Disney’s Boardwalk Resort and grab some lunch at this micro brewery that makes their own beer right on the premises! Try their flight of assorted brews, and enjoy their burger or hazelnut chicken…or my personal favorite, the beer cheese soup!

10. Chef Mickey’s – Just a hop skip and jump away from the Magic Kingdom via monorail is the Contemporary Resort, home to Chef Mickey’s, the only place at WDW where you can have breakfast or dinner buffet style with the fab 5 – Mickey, Minnie, Goofy, Pluto, and Donald! The food is nothing thrilling but is fun and fresh, I especially enjoy the Mickey shaped raviolis and the build your own ice cream sundae bar at dinner time! Breakfast is pretty standard Disney breakfast buffet fare, including assorted meats, pastries and the ever delicious mickey waffles. The real draw here is the characters, it’s the best spot to meet some of the most famous Disney icons all in one place (check out my article on the Best character meals at the Disney Resorts for more info)

When narrowing it down to these ten, I tried to include a lot of different styles of restaurants, including both 1 and 2 table service credit meals, but there are so many more it was hard to pick just the “Top 10” – so I want to know from you – what are some of your favorite table service restaurants in the Walt Disney World Resorts?

Songwriter Robert Sherman Dies at 86

Songwriter Robert Sherman Dies at 86

Sad news this morning. Oscar winning song writer Robert Sherman passed away March 5th in London. He and his brother Richard, together known as the Sherman brothers, wrote so many of my favorite Disney songs including “It’s a Small World” and “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious”.  Few details are known at this time but the news of his death was posted by his son on Facebook.

Robert Sherman’s son Jeff posted the following statement:

Hello to family and friends,

I have very sad news to convey.

My Dad, Robert B. Sherman, passed away tonight in London. He went peacefully after months of truly valiantly fending off death. He loved life and his dear heart finally slowed to a stop when he could fight no more.

I will write more about this incredible man I love and admire so much when I am better rested and composed. He deserves that.

In the meantime, please say a prayer for him. As he said, he wanted to bring happiness to the world and, unquestionably, he succeeded. His love and his prayers, his philosophy and his poetry will live on forever. Forever his songs and his genius will bring hope, joy and love to this small, small world.

I love you, Dad.

Safe travels.

Love,

Jeff

Jason Segel Will Not Return For ‘The Muppets’ Sequel

Jason Segel Will Not Return For 'The Muppets' Sequel
Yesterday we ran a story that Jason Segel wouldn’t be returning to write the sequel to ‘The Muppets’. At the time, it was unclear if that meant Segel would be coming back to star in the film or not. Unfortunately, it looks like the man who brought the Muppets back to the big screen won’t be returning in any capacity. Hit the jump for more.

Marvel Universe Block Arrives April 1 on Disney XD

Marvel Universe Block Arrives April 1 on Disney XD

One of my favorite things on Dinsey XD the last few years has been their Marvel programming. From reruns of ‘Spider-Man: The Animated Series’ from the 1990s, to their new shows like ‘The Spectacular Spider-Man’ and ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, Disney XD has proven to be a great place to find some of the most exciting superhero storytelling in recent memory. On April 1, Disney XD will begin their new Marvel Universe Block which will bring their exciting new show, ‘Ultimate Spider-Man’, as well as returning favorite ‘Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes’, and some new surprises along the way. Hit the jump for the full press release.
