The Ultimate Tropical Water Park Typhoon Lagoon

The Ultimate Tropical Water Park Typhoon Lagoon

Like a surfside playground left behind by a “great storm” for modern-day Swiss Family Robinsons, Typhoon Lagoon — with its breaking waves, saltwater snorkeling pool and gushing water surges — ushers in a new generation of water adventures for Walt Disney World guests.

Located near Downtown Disney West Side, the 61-acre Typhoon Lagoon includes several major features:

  • the first-ever water coaster thrill ride attraction in Central Florida, Crush ‘n’ Gusher;
  •  a man-made watershed mountain with eight twisting-and-turning water slides and roaring streams; and
  • a two-and-one-half-acre wave-making lagoon with surfing-size waves.

In a Typhoon Lagoon exclusive, guests come face-to-face with all the colorful creatures of the Caribbean when they snorkel in Shark Reef, a saltwater pool presented by NAUI (National Association of Underwater Instructors).  The park also features a water playground for children, sunny beaches and lazy streams surrounding a 95-foot mountain.  The water-entertainment area takes its theme from a legend of romance and danger evident with Miss Tilly, the wrecked shrimp boat storm-stranded on the mountain peak.

Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort – A “Must Stay”

Disney's Grand Floridian Resort - A "Must Stay"

A recent stay at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort was nothing short of fabulous for our family!  This was our second stay at a Deluxe tier resort {Animal Kingdom Lodge being the first one}, but our first stay at a monorail resort.  From the second we walked into the Grand Floridian, we knew we were in for a great treat on our Disney vacation.  When we arrived, the live jazz band was playing from the second floor of the lobby, a bride was being photographed on the steps, and families were eagerly awaiting dinner at 1900 Park Fare.  We never felt as if the resort wasn’t child friendly, and the cast members were more than happy to help us with whatever we needed.  Every evening, upon returning from the parks, we found our beds turned down with a sweet piece of chocolate waiting for us.  The Mousekeepers even filled our ice bucket so it was ready for a cool drink.  I could go on and on about how much we loved this magical, classic Disney resort.

1.  When considering transportation to the parks, resort guests from the GF are the first stop at Magic Kingdom on the monorail.  To return from Magic Kingdom in a timely fashion, consider taking the ferry boat that runs to the Grand Floridian.  On the ferry boat, the first stop from Magic Kingdom is the Grand Floridian.  Also, only buses for Downtown Disney, Disney Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom run from the Grand Floridian.

Do you need a Disney Rewards Visa Credit Card?

Do you need a Disney Rewards Visa Credit Card?

If you are anything like me the answer is a resounding NO! In fact I don’t need any more credit cards!   That doesn’t stop every credit card company on earth from sending me a pre-approved credit application once a week.  Even Disney Visa (aka Chase Card Services) was relentless. The photo of Mickey on the card, designed to draw any Disney Addict in.  Oh wait, I can choose from multiple designs?  I can even pick a Tinkerbell card!  Nope, don’t need it.  They can’t make me, I’ve paid off all my cards.  I will not repeat the mistakes of my early 20’s.

I remained firm for a year.  Shredding every application that came.  Mickey’s smiling face cut into a thousand pieces.  UNTIL…What?  A $200 Disney gift card if I sign up?  How did they know I had a trip planned in 3 months?   That will come in handy for sure.  I will use it towards my trip.  That did it, I was done.  Magic words…Disney Gift Card.  Now I had to open the envelope and see what was involved.  Within a few minutes I had my card design picked out (Where Dreams Come True) and the card was on its way.  My husband won’t care, at least it’s not the Tink card.  I’ll get rid of the Gymboree card, that’s the plan.

Why did I give in?  The Disney Visa has great perks and no annual fee.  Here’s the scoop:

Top 5 Places to Hide Out at Disney World

Top 5 Places to Hide Out at Disney World

As much as I love Disney World, I sometimes need a little break from the frenzy of the parks.  Here are my favorite places to hide out and get away from it all and just unplug.  Shhhh, don’t tell anyone, okay?

1. Tom Sawyer Island. This underrated spot is full of quiet, cool spots to lounge around or explore.  If the Magic Kingdom gets too crowded, hop on a raft and head over.  You can even bring a snack from the “mainland” and find a little spot with a chair and watch the world go by on the other side of the river.

2.  Baby Care Centers. Okay, this one is tough because you need a baby (under 3-ish) to use these centers, located in all four parks, but if you’ve got a tot in tow, they can be more than just a place where you can change your baby.   There’s a quiet area where she can eat (highchairs are provided) and toddle around safely while you enjoy the cool air conditioning and quiet.

3.  The Library at Kidani Village. The library at Kidani Village, part of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, is one of the most private public areas on property. I’m not sure why it’s called a library–it doesn’t have any books. But it does have a beautiful fireplace and comfy couches where you can sit and enjoy a book or just look out on the Savanna. I visited here during my trip in December, and hated to leave.  Best of all, it’s almost always empty.

4.  The Carousel of Progress.  This is one of my favorite attractions, but it’s also a great place to decompress; even little kids snuggle in and relax for a bit. The familiarity of the scenes, the music and the narration all add to the experience.  It’s a must-do on every trip.

5.  The lobby of the Grand Floridian Now, I know that the Grand Floridian isn’t what most of you think of when you think “relaxing.”  You probably think it’s formal and stuffy. Well I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong. It’s Disney, so it can’t be stuffy and even though the resort itself appears to be quite formal, it’s actually just as welcoming as any other Disney resort. Next time you’re in the Magic Kingdom and you need a quick break, hop on the monorail and head on over. Have a snack or a quick lunch and just relax and take it all in. The lobby is cool, the surroundings are beautiful, right up to the soaring ceiling.  I promise you that you won’t feel uncomfortable just stopping by for a quick visit.  Then just get on the boat and head back to the park.

Disney Sponsored Turtles Compete in Annual Marathon

Disney Sponsored Turtles Compete in Annual Marathon

Fans at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will be able to cheer on “Peach” and “Pearl” as the two loggerhead sea turtles return to the Atlantic Ocean to compete in the annual Turtles Migration Marathon.

Named after characters from the Disney-Pixar movie Finding Nemo, Peach and Pearl are competing in the “Tour de Turtles: A Sea Turtle Migration Marathon” hosted by the Caribbean Conservation Corporation (CCC) on July 28.

Peach is sponsored by Disney’s Animal Programs and Disney’s Vero Beach Resort, and Pearl is sponsored by the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund and Disney’s Friends for Change.  Joining them in the “marathon race” will be 12 other turtles starting at various locations. As all 14 turtles travel from their nesting sites to unknown feeding grounds, researchers will track them by satellite technology gathering vital information that will help conservationists and governing agencies make informed decisions about conservation methods and policies.

The turtle that swims the furthest distance will be named the winner. Audiences worldwide will be able to view the sea turtles’ progress online at www.tourdeturtles.org and watch the marathon unfold.

“The marathon is important on the larger level because the CCC shares information with the National Marine Fishery Services which controls where people fish”, said Anne Savage, Conservation Director of Walt Disney World Programs. “This will help determine where turtles swim in relation to where boats are, and to use that information to regulate the amount of time that people stay in those areas keeping the turtles out of danger.”

During the marathon, each turtle will represent a “cause or threat” to their survival. Pearl’s mission is to raise awareness on the entanglement effects caused by pollution, fishing lines and fishing nets. Peach’s mission is to raise awareness on the effect of light pollution.  Since sea turtle hatchlings rely on moonlight to find their way to the ocean, many become disoriented and drawn off-course by artificial light sources.

Among the oldest creatures on earth, sea turtles have remained essentially unchanged for the past 110 million years.  In the United States, as much as 90 percent of sea turtle nesting occurs in Florida, which serves as home base for several species of endangered and threatened sea turtles.  With as few as one out of 1,000 hatchlings surviving to adulthood, conservation efforts must focus on combating human-caused threats through education and research.

Mother raises enough to take cancer survivor McKenna May, 4, to Disney World

Mother raises enough to take cancer survivor McKenna May, 4, to Disney World

According to the NY Daily news, They’re going to Disney World!

Friends, family, and complete strangers have raised more than enough money  to send a four-year-old girl whose leukemia is in remission to the Magic Kingdom  after her father denied the child a Make-A-Wish-funded trip to the Orlando theme  park because she wasn’t “sick enough.”

The story of McKenna May, who was diagnosed with leukemia as a two-year-old  but prevented from visiting Disney World by a seemingly bitter father ricocheted  across the nation this week, receiving coverage in national media outlets  ranging from Gawker to Business Insider.

When the story first ran in the Bowling Green Sentinel-Tribune, it was  reported that the child’s mother and grandmother had decided to try to raise  money for an alternate trip; the four-year-old had been talking about visiting  the theme park for months.
