Tips for Saving Money off food at the Magic Kingdom

Tips for Saving Money off food at the Magic Kingdom

Most of us have a budget but Disney World can be a budget buster. My daughter and I have annual passes so we go as often as we can. Over the past few years I have learned a lot of money saving tips. Hopefully some of these can help you.

A huge one for me is getting a free cup of ice water in any quick service location that has a soda fountain. If the taste of the water bothers you then you can bring along some of those little flavored packets or Chip uses Mio. There are few locations that will only give you a cup of ice so in that case I just find the nearest water fountain. That can save you a lot of money especially when it’s hot out, which is most of the time here in Central Florida.

Disney World food prices can be a little expensive. So here are some tips that can help you save money on your next visit to Disney.

  • You can get a kids meal at a quick service location and if you are not a big eater that will be just fine for lunch or dinner or if you are a big eater that can be a good snack for you. Quick service locations do not ask the ages of the child. You can get a kids meal without the plastic box and save $1.50
  • The Plaza restaurant in the Magic Kingdom is a sit down restaurant, reservations are strongly recommended, their prices are reasonable, by Disney standards. There menu is limited but the selections they do have are all good and food portions are large enough to share.
  • Casey’s Corner is quick service restaurant, on main street, they serve mainly hot dogs and fries. The portion sizes are large so if you are not a big eater you can share a hot dog between 2 people. As a bonus they also have UNLIMITED CHEESE Sauce for nachos and hot dogs!!!
  • In Liberty Square, there is a food kiosk that sells mainly healthy snacks, along with some chips. They have these huge pickles, but they are big enough for 2 people. So put that with free cups of ice water and you have a snack for 2 people for less than $10.00.
  • If you have a sweet tooth you can get a cupcake at The Confectionery  or The Main Street Bakery. I know they are a little pricey but they are very good and they are huge so 2 people can split one. They also have many other tasty treats.
  • Try getting a Waffle Sand which from Sleepy Hollow. They have a sweet and spicy chicken waffle and a ham, prosciutto, and Swiss cheese waffle, both for $6.99; and a Nutella and fresh fruit waffle for $5.59
  • Another trick that works anywhere is using a company like Garden Grocer to order snacks and bring them with you to the parks.

With the money you save you can buy those Mickey ears you have been eying all day. What are some tips and tricks you use to save money on food at Walt Disney World? We would love to hear them in the comment box below.

10 Ways to Know If You’re a Disney Addict

10 Ways to Know If You're a Disney Addict

Chances are that if you are like myself and the other writers here at Chip and Co., you are a Disney Addict. If you already know you are you should join us on our Disney Addict Facebook Page. We have yet to find a cure, but the symptoms of this condition are rather obvious. Most likely your own friends and family have pointed them out to you or questioned your sanity time or two. Still not sure? Check out my Top 10 Ways to Know If You’re a Disney Addict.

1. You refer to your own meals as quick service or table service meals. (This actually happened at my house yesterday when I was talking about dinner)

2. You sing the theme to Wishes when watching any 4th of July fireworks display. (I did this earlier this month)

3. You ask your family members at least once a day, “where we be right now if we were at Disney?” (This usually happens to me when I’m hungry and my answer is usually Le Cellier).

4. You get excited when you drive past an airport. (This happens to me every time!)

5. You hum the Twilight Zone theme when you board an elevator. (Only when I’m alone. If not, I hum it in my mind or quote Rod Serling’s lines to myself)

6. You watch the free Disney planning DVD’s just for fun. (Done this several times; and if you’re reading this, I’m sure you have too!)

7. You find hidden Mickeys everywhere! (It’s true)

8. No one asks you anymore about where you’re going on vacation. (It’s no longer a question of where, it’s when. Otherwise, I just don’t bring it up to avoid their puzzled expressions and an awkward moment)

9. You quote lines from Disney films in everyday conversation. (Who doesn’t?)

10. You name your pets after Disney characters. (Don’t judge)

Have you shown any of these symptoms? If so, you are probably an Disney Addict so be sure to comment below and share with others who share your condition. Don’t forgot to stop by our Facebook Page and meet other addicts like yourself!

The Art Department and Leading Artists from Pixar, Disney and Top Studios, Form Cutting-Edge Online and On-Ground Collegiate Animation Program.

The Art Department and Leading Artists from Pixar, Disney and Top Studios, Form Cutting-Edge Online and On-Ground Collegiate Animation Program.

The Art Department (http://www.theartdepartment.org/), in partnership with animation, story, design, and creative leaders from Pixar, Disney and other notables, have launched a new, multi-track collegiate animation program. The animation classes and major starts August 27th 2012, and submissions for merit based awards, including full-rides, have begun via the school’s website.

“The Art Department offers a mainline to animation, film, games, and art industry leaders who teach within a collegiate program built by those who make Academy Award winning films and blockbuster games. Having Andrew Gordon and esteemed animation faculty lead this innovative international program, brings true knowledge and deep practical experience to our students, connecting them to those capable of delivering life-changing opportunities. We have cut the cost of college education to less than half that of the top art schools in the US. Full and partial ride, merit based awards, combined with on-ground and online delivery, we make it possible for deserving students from any economic background or locale to learn and build their creative dreams alongside those that lead the field.”

Jason Manley – President, The Art Department, Founder of ConceptArt.Org

“Our animation program is rooted in history, tradition, visual storytelling, is highly focused on creativity, visual expression and entrepreneurial spirit. It can be attended by students anywhere in the world, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week,” Manley says. “Access to affordable, life-changing, educational experiences is important and we are doing everything to bring opportunities and success to talented people. Giving the merit awards to hard-working artists around the world, has a major impact and is part of what makes it all worthwhile.”

Each segment of the school curriculum features classes taught by masters of that discipline, assuring students get relevant, applicable insight from the very best in the field at any given time. Courses span five tracks within the program; Directing, Animation, Experimental, Games, and Visual Effects while covering 3D, 2D, and Flash based media options. From the start, students focus on valuable foundational training in drawing, painting, and problem solving, while learning to create effective characters, visual narratives, meaningful stories and personal creative voice. In addition, students gain crucial insight into business, legal, teamwork, production, marketing, planning, promotion, and finance – all necessary for long term success in today’s rapidly growing industry.

“I want the best animation program in the world. We are teaching students what they need to know to be great storytellers, directors, animators, and visual artists. Everyone involved wanted the program that we wished we had when we were in college. That is what we built and it does not exist anywhere else but here,” says Department Chair, Andrew Gordon.

Gordon is a fifteen year veteran of the Oscar winning studio Pixar, where he has contributed to awarded films, including, A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2 and 3, Monsters Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Ratatouille and currently, as Directing Animator for Monsters University. As a three time leader of Pixar’s animation internship, he works to bring new talent to the studio and regularly assists with training those ready to make the next step into the company.

D, Drawing and Painting and Illustration. I am proud to work with such gifted and experienced faculty. These are not just industry stars, they are great teachers.”

Canoe Racers Keep Disney Tradition Alive

Canoe Racers Keep Disney Tradition Alive

Olympians or not, more than 800 Cast Members on 75 teams paddled their hearts out in the recent Canoe Races of the World event–commonly referred to as C.R.O.W–in Magic Kingdom.

Surrounding Tom Sawyer’s Island on the Rivers of America, the racers started near Country Bears Jamboree, passing by Big Thunder Mountain and Haunted Mansion,  rounding the corner near Liberty Square’s Riverboat to the finish line.

The annual two-week event began at Walt Disney World in 1973 after the tradition was started in Disneyland in 1963. C.R.O.W. is the only Cast event with similar races held in Disney Parks around the globe.

New show expected in Disneyland Fantasyland

New show expected in Disneyland Fantasyland

According to the OC Register, Disneyland is making plans to produce a new show in Fantasyland after nearly seven years without a theatrical production.

The Princess Fantasy Faire, a meet-and-greet, is set move out of the Fantasyland Theater and re-open next year in a new location that is under construction.

The new faire will run where the Carnation Plaza Gardens used to be at the end of Main Street, U.S.A. near Sleeping Beauty Castle. Jon Storbeck, vice president of Disneyland, said that Disney officials plan to bring in a “brand new show” and that they were working on a “concept” for the theater.

Disney has yet to announce details of the replacement show.

Top 5 Ways to Save Money on a Disney Vacation

lunch

It’s no secret that a Disney Vacation can be expensive! So to make the magic happen, we Disney fans have to get creative to save some cash; and I’m a big fan of taking advantage of the values that Disney has to offer to help me in my efforts. While there are many ways to pinch pennies, here are my Top 5 Ways to Save Money on a Disney Vacation!

5. Disney Dining Plan-This plan allots each guest a number of meals and snacks per day. There are three different types of plans: the Quick Service Dining Plan, the Standard Dining Plan, and the Deluxe Dining Plan. The Quick Service plan only lets guests eat at quick service restaurant, but it can really save you some cash; and the standard plan is a great money-saver for guests who want to enjoy a table service restaurants during their stay. Regardless of which one you choose, the plan helps you keep a cap on your spending which can really add up; and the best saving of all is when you can take advantage of a free dining offer, like what is going on now!

4. Value Resorts-There are three resort categories at Walt Disney World and the cheapest is the value resort category. Value resorts are not as luxurious as Disney’s deluxe resorts, like the Grand Floridian or the Contemporary, but they still offer plenty of pixie dust and that Disney resort experience. Plus they really save you a considerable amount of money over the other resorts.

3. Have Lunch-Looking to save money at mealtime? Consider visiting that table service restaurant at lunch instead of dinner. Why? The menu prices go up considerably at dinner, but many of the best menu items are still included at lunch. Also, think about having a late lunch for your biggest meal of the day to substitute for dinner. You can always have a snack or something later in the evening if your stomach’s growling; and a late lunch can save you money that you would spend on two meals.

2. Discount Season-Prices at Disney tend to go down during times of low attendance at WDW. For example, September, October, January, and February are known to have some of the lowest attendance and low prices. If you can go at this time, it will save you some money; and due to the lack of crowds, you can experience more of WDW in a day than you could during three days during peak season. Therefore, you are getting more bang for your buck! Check out this post to see When is the Best Time to Visit Walt Disney World.

1. Rent DVC Points-Not a Disney Vacation Club Member? No problem! You can rent DVC points from other DVC Members who are offering or from a reliable website. Renting points enables you to enjoy a deluxe resort for a MUCH cheaper price! This is great for large families or people traveling in a group who want a larger space or various rooms, such as what DVC Villas provide. However, do keep in mind that if you rent DVC Points, you cannot receive the free dining plan if it’s being offered.

Have you used any of these methods to save money on your Disney Vacation? Which do you recommend?
