What Would Indiana Jones Do?

What Would Indiana Jones Do?

In a real-life Indiana Jones adventure a lawsuit has been filed in the state of Illinois by Dr. James Awe, director of the Institute of Archeology of Belize. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of the nation of Belize over the Crystal Skull artifact that you will recognize from the film “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”.

Who is Dr. James Awe and why does he have anything to do with Indiana Jones and the crystal skull? Well, Awe is a real-life” Indiana Jones and he is demanding the return of the real Crystal Skull that is in the hands of a treasure-hunting family that allegedly stole it over 80 years ago from Belize. If that is not enough to make this story entertaining, Awe is also implicating Lucasfilms, the Walt Disney Co. (new owner of Lucasfims) and Paramount Pictures (distributor of the Indiana Jones movie) for allegedly using a replica of the Crystal Skull in the movie.

Awe claims that an adventurer named F.A. Mitchell-Hedges and his adopted daughter traveled to Belize in the 1920s and found the skull and took it back to England and has profited from it by exhibiting the skull.  Anna Mitchell-Hedges, the adopted daughter reportedly disclosed how she found the skill under a collapsed altar while exploring temple ruins. She disclosed this info to the Sci Fi Channel for a documentary that aired in 2008.

According to Awe’s lawsuit the Crystal Skull comes from the Mayan culture and is made of clear or milky quartz and is shaped like a human skull.  The skull is supposed to have magical powers are there are four known Crystal Skulls that have these valuable properties in the world. The other three Crystal skulls are on display in museums in London, Paris and the Smithsonian in Washington.

Among the damages Awe is asking for the “illegal profits” of “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” which grossed about $786 million worldwide.

“Lucasfilm never sought, nor was given permission to utilize the Mitchell-Hedges Skull or its likeness in the Film,” says the complaint. “To date, Belize has not participated in any of the profits derived from the sale of the Film or the rights thereto.”

The lawsuit filed by attorney Adam Tracy attempts to make this claim by saying that Belize has a “right, title and interest in and to the Mitchell-Hedges Skull and its likeness” and that the film companies have participated in a civil conspiracy and tortiously interfered with its prospective economic advantage.

Dr. Awe is suing the Mitchell-Hedges family for removing the Crystal Skull from Belize and never returning it. The claim against Lucasfilms, Walt Disney Co, and Paramount Pictures is that the exhibition of the skull in the film is unlawful.

This lawsuit is an adventure in proportion to the Indiana Jones movie, but thinking about the big picture, what do you think Indiana Jones would have done in real life? Do you think he would file a lawsuit or would he find a way to take back what he thinks he owns?

America Celebrates Lincoln with 7 Golden Globe nominations

lincoln

DreamWorks Pictures announced today that “Lincoln,” directed by Steven Spielberg, will hit $100M at the domestic box office today, 34 days from its initial exclusive release in 11 theaters on November 9. With its relevancy and riveting storytelling, the powerful film has resonated with American audiences across a wide demographic, drawing in moviegoers from teens to senior citizens.

“Lincoln,” starring Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, David Strathairn, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Spader, Hal Holbrook and Tommy Lee Jones, has steadily delivered strong performances to hit the $100M mark today. To support audience demand, an additional 271 theaters will be added Friday, bringing the total number of theaters to 2285.

Today, “Lincoln” received seven Golden Globe® nominations—more than any other film this year and more than any other Spielberg film. In addition to best picture drama and best director nods, the film was nominated in the best actor, best supporting actor and best supporting actress categories as well as best screenplay and best original score categories.

Yesterday, “Lincoln” garnered SAG Award® nominations for outstanding performances in the leading role and supporting role categories for male actor and in the supporting role category for female actor as well as a nomination for outstanding performance by a cast in a motion picture.

Earlier this week, “Lincoln” received a record-setting 13 nominations for the 18th annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards from the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA). This is more nominations than any film has ever received from BFCA.

In addition, both the New York Film Critics Circle and the Boston Society of Film critics honored Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field and Tony Kushner with awards.

Producer Kathleen Kennedy comments on the success of “Lincoln”: “It was a 12- year struggle to get this film made. We are humbled and gratified to receive these nominations and to see how audiences have embraced it. To see this film cross $100 million after we were continually discouraged from making it, is beyond what we could have ever hoped for. “

Many critics have responded to the political relevancy of “Lincoln.” Joe Klein in Time says, “Suddenly it seems as if everyone in the political world is talking about Steven Spielberg’s splendid film ‘Lincoln.’”

Ruth Marcus at the Washington Post states: “President Obama hosted a screening of Steven Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln’ at the White House the other day. He should do it again—and again and again. ‘Lincoln’ is exquisitely crafted and even more exquisitely timed.”

And David Brooks in the New York Times comments, “I hope everybody who shares this anti-political mood will go out to see ‘Lincoln,’ directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Tony Kushner. The movie portrays the nobility of politics in exactly the right way.”

“Lincoln” is a revealing drama that focuses on the 16th President’s tumultuous final months in office. In a nation divided by war and the strong winds of change, Lincoln pursues a course of action designed to end the war, unite the country and abolish slavery. With the moral courage and fierce determination to succeed, his choices during this critical moment will change the fate of generations to come.

From DreamWorks Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox, in association with Participant Media, “Lincoln” is directed by Steven Spielberg, produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with a screenplay by Tony Kushner, based in part on the book “Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln” by Doris Kearns Goodwin.

“Lincoln” is distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

Jazz Great Dave Brubeck Dies At 91, Made Disney Music Cool

Jazz Great Dave Brubeck Dies At 91, Made Disney Music Cool

The great jazz pianist Dave Brubeck passed away last Wednesday.  It was the day before his 92nd birthday.

Dave had a Disney connection, back in 1957 he released an album called Dave Digs Disney.

Brubeck took a big risk when he recorded this album.  Back in the 50’s Disney soundtracks and music were considered “beneath” the talents of jazz musicians.  Brubeck’s album was a great success and it opened the door to other great jazz legends such as Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, John Coltrane and Bill Evans who all recorded their own versions or Disney music.

Dave Brubeck also had some other animation connections.  He composed music for “The NASA Space Station” episode for the animated mini series This is America, Charlie Brown.  He also inspired animators, including Oscar-winner Zbigniew Rybczyński whose experimental student film Take Five used Brubeck’s music as a backdrop.

Best places to see Wishes both inside and outside of the Magic Kingdom

Best places to see Wishes both inside and outside of the Magic Kingdom

Walt Disney World isn’t Walt Disney World without its fireworks, you know?  I mean, the views of Wishes -combined with its unique soundtrack-are for sure a must do on every itinerary.  But let’s face it-at the end of a full day of touring the parks, sometimes the fireworks show gets pushed off the itinerary in place of some pool time and relaxing in your resort room.  But with a little planning, and some easy tips to remember, you can enjoy Wishes and all its magic!

Tips to Remember:

  • Spots along Main Street, U.S.A. fill up quickly for Wishes.  If you plan on viewing it from Main Street, plan on choosing-and staying in-a spot around an hour before the show starts.
  • Split your family up and take turns holding the spot while others run to do a few attractions, shop, or grab food.
  • Choose the night you see Wishes on a day when you DIDN’T start at Magic Kingdom at Rope Drop.  It makes for a long, sometimes crowded evening – it’s good to view Wishes on a day when you’ve had a break at the pool or resort.
  • Plan on doing a few attractions after the Wishes show-most everyone is headed to the buses or monorail, and it’s your chance to hit a few more rides before returning to your resort.

Walt Disney Studios Unveils the Full Trailer for ‘The Lone Ranger’

Walt Disney Studios Unveils the Full Trailer for 'The Lone Ranger'

Not too long ago, Disney unveiled the first teaser trailer for ‘The Lone Ranger’, a new adaptation of the popular character. The film, starring Armie Hammer as John Reid, the man known as the Lone Ranger, and Johnny Depp as Tonto, his Native American sidekick, really seemed to have piqued the interest of many, but that was just the teaser. Disney has now released a full length trailer for the film, which gives us more of an idea of what we can expect from the film, including some more info on the story in the film.

I have to say, I’m liking a lot of what I see, which is great news. With all the problems the film faced before going before cameras, I had some doubts about how the film would turn out. But thankfully, it seems that Gore Verbinski, the director of the first three films of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise, Depp, and Hammer have really brought their A game, going all out to bring us the best movie possible. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing this, so  I definitely can’t wait for July 3, 2013 to get here. Hit the jump to check out the full trailer.

Are you excited for ‘The Lone Ranger’? Let me know in the comments below, only here on Chip and Company!

Arrests Made Over Prostitution Ring Near Disneyland

Anaheim police arrested two people they claim ran a prostitution ring out of a motel near Disneyland.

Police say an online ad led to arrests made at the Motel 6 on Disney Way, where arrests were made. Authorities contend that Irina Martinez of Anaheim and Andres Terrones of Santa Ana ran a sex-for-hire operation involving several women out of the hotel rooms.

They remained jailed Thursday on suspicion of pimping, conspiracy and child endangerment.

The undercover operation involved Anaheim police and the Orange County Human Trafficking Task Force.

Walt Disney World Event Drops Off PGA Tour

Walt Disney World Event Drops Off PGA Tour

The PGA Tour‘s event in Mexico will anchor a six-tournament schedule next fall that for the first time since 1971 will not include Walt Disney World.

Disney has been part of the PGA Tour since Jack Nicklaus won the inaugural event in 1971. It was not a big shock that Disney was dropped from the PGA Tour. Disney lost its title sponsor when the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals did not renew, and Disney did not aggressively pursue a replacement.  It was always a favorite week of the year for players with young families.

The 2013-14 season will commence with the Frys.com Open on Oct. 10-13 in San Martin, Calif., the week following the Presidents Cup. The PGA Tour then moves to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open in Las Vegas on Oct. 17-20 before going overseas for two straight weeks.
