Disney’s Keys to the Kingdom Tour

main street usa

I was lucky enough on a recent trip to take part in the Keys to the Kingdom Tour at The Magic Kingdom. Let me tell you, this is well worth the price of admission. I used my annual pass to get a 15% discount on the tour. My total was around $66 for the 5 and 1/2 hour tour which included lunch at Columbia Harbour House.

My tour began at 9 am, but we were allowed into the Magic Kingdom at 8:30. This was great since the park was not open yet and we could take those wonderful photos of an empty main street! We checked into our tour at The Chamber of Commerce and were treated to some super cute name tags and bottled water. We were also given our ear pieces at this time and selected what we would eat for lunch.

At 9:00 am sharp we met our tour guide, Molly. Molly was everything that is good about Disney! She was fun, funny, informative, entertaining, and so knowledgeable. She was also an amazing story teller.  I absolutely adored her. Molly informed us that we would not be allowed to take any photos on the tour, either “on stage” or “backstage” and we were happy to comply. For this reason, you will not be seeing any pictures that were taken during the walking tour.

Molly began our tour with a walk down Main Street, explaining to us what the Keys to the Kingdom are: Safety, Courtesy, Show, and Efficiency. It is upon these building blocks that the entire Magic Kingdom and Disney World as a whole is run. As we walked down Main Street she explained how beginning at the train station you are seeing a show. The station acts as curtain concealing the star; Cinderella Castle. As the curtain lifts and you enter Main Street you will see concessions such as popcorn and soda for sale and walk along a red walk way that is representative of the red carpet! The windows of the buildings act as credits for the people who brought this production to life.

Dan Povenmire & Jeff “Swampy” Marsh Talk Phineas & Ferb

Povenmire Marsh Phineas Ferb

In anticipation of the all-new Phineas and Ferb: Animal Agents—releasing to DVD on February 26, 2013—I had the opportunity to interview the show’s creators and co-executive producers, Dan Povenmire and Jeff “Swampy” Marsh.

Since it was a phone interview, they began by identifying themselves, so I would know who was speaking when. I told them if they would just speak in character, I’d have no trouble…so they greeted me as Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and Major Frances Mongram! That set the tone for the very friendly conversation that follows.

Here’s what the guys had to say about the show in general, the new production, and what’s in the works.

JW: Good afternoon! Thanks for speaking with me today! My kids and my husband and I are all huge Phineas and Ferb fans, and it’s great to have this chance to talk to you. I have read that it took you guys 16 years of pitching the show to various producers before Disney picked it up? Is that so?

P&M: Yeah, it was about 13 years before someone finally took a look at it, and then another couple years of negotiating and working out the details before it actually aired, so yeah, about 15 or 16 years total—1993 to 2008.

Disney Negotiating With Kenneth Branagh to Direct Cinderella

Disney may have found it’s Prince Charming to save it’s planned adaptation of Cinderella.  Just weeks after original director Mark Romanek left, rumors have it that Disney is negotiating with Kenneth Branaghh to keep the film on schedule to start shooting in London this Fall.

The Hobbit star Cate Blanchett will remain in the movie as the wicked stepmother, though the film is still looking to find the right fit for it’s title role.  The live film Cinderella was originally set up in 2011, after Disney had made a billion dollars from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland.

If all goes according to plan, Cinderella could be in theaters in 2014.  Which coincidentally would be  exactly a hundred years after Mary Pickford played the role for Paramount Pictures, in Hollywood’s first adaptation of the ancient tale.

Tony Baxter, Senior VP of Creative Development for Walt Disney Imagineering, is stepping down from leading up the team that comes up with all of our favorite rides and attractions. Baxter has had a rich 47 year history with Disneyland from scooping ice cream to creating some of the park’s most famous rides like Big Thunder Mountain.

“It has been a wondrous 47 years,” Baxter said in a statement. “The Imagineers I have known and shared these times with have provided invaluable experiences not to be found anywhere else on Earth. The future of Imagineering and Disney Parks is incredibly bright.”

Baxter got to do and see it all in his tenure with the Walt Disney Company. At Disneyland, Baxter led the creation of some of Disneyland’s major rides, including Splash Mountain, Indiana Jones Adventure and Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage. Abroad, Baxter also was the foreman for the development of Disneyland Paris and worked on the creation of Walt Disney World.

Baxter does not want to be too far from Disney and has offered himself up as a mentor to current imagineers. He will be greatly missed and gets many thanks from all his friends at Disney.

“Like so many Imagineering greats before him, his creativity, passion and knowledge will have a remarkable impact on the next generations of (Disney) dreamers and doers,” said Bruce Vaughn, chief creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, in a statement. “We thank Tony for his immeasurable contributions to the Disney legacy so far, and look forward to the next chapter of his Disney story.”

Disney to Exapand Star Wars Mythos with Standalone Films

Bob Iger and George Lucas
Bob Iger and George Lucas

Last night in an interview with CNBC Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger confirmed that work is currently underway to expand the Star Wars franchise by creating  standalone films. The lends credence to rumors of a Yoda, Han Solo and Boba Fett solo adventures, however there are no confirmations from Disney or Lucasfilm regarding characters or what era of the saga they will be producing. It does look like they will be shooting the new trilogy as well as these standalone films at the same time which can maximize the results for the studio keeping some costs down. It also appears that we can see at least one Star Wars film a year. Wow! It’s a great time to be a Wars fan!

Here is the press release from Disney/Lucasfilm:

The Star Wars cinematic galaxy is about to experience a Big Bang. Lucasfilm is officially announcing new spinoff films that will expand the mythos and depths of the Star Wars universe in previously unexplored ways.

One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.

In a call to investors, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed while the original focus was on the highly-anticipated sequel trilogy, the idea of spinoff films was bandied about early and the additional films are now becoming a reality. “We are in development of a few standalone films,” he said, “that are not part of the Star Wars saga…there are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films.”

For more of my thoughts regarding this news please check out my article on JediMouseketeer.com.

What Star Wars character do you think would be a good fit for a standalone film? Please reply to this article!

A Chrome Experiment made with some friends from Oz!

Oz the Great and Powerful

You won’t need magical powers to take a journey down the Yellow Brick Road; just point your favorite browser to the latest Chrome Experiment, “Find Your Way to Oz.” Developed in collaboration with Disney and UNIT9 in anticipation of the upcoming film, Oz The Great and Powerful, this experiment takes you through a dusty Kansas circus and leads to a vibrant land, following in the footsteps of the Wizard himself.

Like any good circus, there’s plenty to keep you entertained: compose your own music, play with a fun photo booth and create your own movie with azoetrope. The path to Oz also involves confronting an ominous tornado; surviving it completes the journey, enabling fans of the movie to watch an exclusive unreleased clip from the film.

Chrome Experiments like “Find Your Way to Oz” would have been impossible a few years ago. Since that time, the web has evolved and allowed developers and designers to create immersive beautiful experiences. For “Find Your Way to Oz” the 3D environment was built entirely with new technologies such as WebGL and CSS3. It’s enhanced by rich audio effects thanks to the Web Audio Application Programming Interface (API). The photo booth and zoetrope were built using the getUserMedia feature of WebRTC, which grants webpages access to your computer’s camera and microphone (with your permission).

For the best experience, you’ll need to use an up-to-date computer built to handle intense graphics. It also works best with a webcam and a modern browser that supports WebGL and WebRTC, like Chrome. The experience also works best on For tablet or smartphone users, we have a smaller scale yet equally enjoyable experience that you can try with the latest Chrome browser on your Android device, iPhone or iPad.

If you want to learn more, or run away and join the developer circus, you can get an explanation of the technologies used on the Chromium blog or in Google’s technical case study.

This is Me Series Celebrates Black History Month on the Disney Channel

brandpageimages_disney_channel_logo

Young kids and tweens celebrate Black History Month by sharing personal anecdotes in a series of new “This Is Me” interstitials beginning FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 1 on Disney Channel. Filmed at the Long Beach Boys & Girls Club, the interstitials feature youth sharing about their favorite heroes, sources of inspiration and dreams for the future.

“These interstitials are a great way for kids to celebrate Black History Month with their peers and share how their heroes continue to inspire and empower them to dream big,” said Ron Pomerantz, Vice President, Marketing and Creative, Disney Channel.

Geared towards 6-14 year-olds, the “This Is Me” series is designed to celebrate the uniqueness of every day kids and highlight aspects of their lives that have made them who they are today.

I personally love these little videos they show on commercial breaks and can’t wait to see more!
