Disney Joins Statewide Coalition Against Texting and Driving

txt

In an effort to make driving on Florida’s roadways safer, Walt Disney World Resort today joined a coalition of state and national organizations, including the Florida League of Cities, Florida Sheriffs Association, AAA and the City of Orlando to support legislation to stop motorists from texting while driving.

According to the National Safety Council, each year more than 100,000 crashes happen in the United States because of drivers who are distracted by activities like texting, emailing and sending instant messages. A study by the Virginia Tech Highway Safety Institute found that individuals who send text messages while driving are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash.

Florida is one of the few states without a distracted driving law. The Florida House and Senate are expected to discuss a measure to prohibit distracted driving during the upcoming legislative session.

As part of an ongoing commitment to safety, Walt Disney World Resort is already among the growing number of companies across Florida that has a distracted driving policy in place.

LINCOLN Spurs Educational Campaign

All Middle and High Schools Across the U.S. to Receive DVDs of Steven Spielberg’s film as Part of Education Outreach

Jim Berk, Chief Executive Officer of Participant Media, announced Monday that Steven Spielberg’s critically acclaimed film, LINCOLN, will be distributed to all middle and high schools, both public and private, throughout the United States when the film becomes available on DVD. Participant Media, DreamWorks Pictures and Fox/Newscorp are funding the unparalleled effort with Disney In-Home creating the packaging and Disney Educational Productions handling distribution.

Participant Media conducted a standard research study for LINCOLN prior to the film’s release, which revealed that more than half of Americans think it’s important to learn about Lincoln, but two-thirds say they know little to nothing about him. This clearly indicates a need to better educate our nation’s students about the 16th president’s accomplishments. The tremendous positive response the film has received from educators, politicians, historians and the general public testifies to the fact that an understanding and knowledge of history can be an enlightening and powerful tool for all Americans.

Which Disney Planning Guidebook Is Right For Me?

Disney-Cartoons-Mickey-Mouse-With-Friends-Wallpapers4

Planning a Walt Disney World vacation is no small task – if you want to do it right and get the most out of your trip you will need to do some planning and research. Many turn to the internet (and sites like Chip and Co!) to assist with their Disney planning, and others prefer hard copy – and there are PLENTY of Disney guidebooks out there that can help you figure out which restaurants, hotels, rides and more are right for you and your party.

So you’re standing at your local bookstore in front of the vast array of Disney books available, and you wonder – which one should I use? Here’s a simple braekdown of which book might be the best for you:

Most Detailed“The Unofficial Guide To Walt Disney World 2013” By Bob Sehlinger and Len Testa is a thick 864 page guide to anything and everything WDW – some great things about it are the in depth Resort and ride descriptions, and there are plenty of user reviews too, to give you an idea what people really think of everything. If you want to know it all, this is the book for you. But be warned – with this many details comes information overload, and the reviews are not always an accurate representation of any given Resort/Restaurant/Ride, so keep that in mind too. They also have “With Kids”, “Beyond Disney”, and “Color Companion” versions of this guidebook available too.

More than 2,000 educators immersed themselves in the most important topics related to bilingual education during the 42nd Annual National Association for Bilingual Education (NABE) conference at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort.

As part of its ongoing commitment to diversity and education, The Walt Disney Company is sponsoring this year’s conference, with the theme “Bilingual Education: Magic Happens!” Attendees took on the role of students as they experienced special presentations and sessions on topics ranging from the Race to the Top initiative to the Spanish version of the Common Core Standards.

Disney’s Peter Pan Blu-Ray Review

Disney Peter Pan

February 5th marked the 60th anniversary of the release of the classic Disney movie Peter Pan!  As a result, Walt Disney Pictures released the movie on Blu-Ray, and I was privileged to be able to review it for Chip and Company!  I hope that the words I convey to you in this review are sufficient to make you go right out and purchase the movie, because let me tell you, there are some incredible things that this movie has — especially in the bonus features — that I had never seen before!

Right out of the gate, I saw a really neat feature that I had never experienced before.  I was getting ready to watch the movie with my daughter Sophie and her best friend Riley, and Sophie was making a popcorn for us all to enjoy!  The movie was about to start, but the popcorn wasn’t ready yet, so I paused it — and when I did so, I got a countdown clock that indicated that, if I didn’t hit play within 10 seconds, we would be taken to special Pirate Training activities!

Traveling with a toddler to Disney…lets get real!

Toddler1

Envision this:  A “magical” trip to Disney with your toddler.  Nothing but smiles and tears of joy.  The outbursts are non-existent, your child’s patience are at an all time high, and waiting doesn’t evoke a concern in the world.  These are the trips that I envisioned, strives for, and dreamed of.  Now don’t get me wrong; our trips have been incredibly magical and filled with amazing memories that are sure to last more than a lifetime.  However reality reared it’s ugly head early on in our trips.  I am hoping that you are able to use my experiences to help you plan and understand what traveling to the most magical place on earth could entail!

I will start by saying not every child is the same.  You may have a prince or princess that is happy to sit in their carriage and relax while they are pushed around by you.  Then there is my child.  Jr doesn’t sit…ever!  He loves to run and jump and skip along.  We must have been delusional thinking that his behavior was going to be any different in Disney.  John found joy dodging and weaving in and out of groups of people and running from mommy and daddy.  He refused to sit in the stroller and refused to hold anyone’s hand.  The minute I grabbed for his hand he went into fish mode…you all know that mode when they literally go limp and start flopping around on the ground like a fish out of water…but now add in the screams, yes friends we were “those people.”  I was so desperate to try to find solutions I walked into a store and asked if they had a Mickey backpack with a leash attached to it.  Yes I contemplated putting him on a leash.  I started to brainstorm and one solution that I have come up with since it to put a little ribbon or handle on the side of the stroller for him to hold on to.  This way he is close to us without us making him feel like he is out of control.  I also give him ample warnings and reminders that he MUST sit in the stroller from the bus to the entrance of the park and vice versa.
