Disney VoluntEARS Bring Music to Kids’ Summer Camp

This summer, dozens of Central Florida students are bringing more music into their lives with support from a group of Disney Cast Members who are donating time in the classroom and raising funds onstage for more kids to experience the joy of performing

The week-long musical summer camp is offered by A Gift for Music, which is a program of A Gift for Teaching. The non-profit organization provides free music education to underserved students interested in playing stringed instruments. This year’s summer camp also included vocal lessons from a Disney VoluntEAR who performs musical magic on Main Street.

“Our summer campers erupted in screams and applause when they learned about Disney’s involvement with the camp this year,” said Eric Smith, director of A Gift For Music.  “The Encore! Cast Performing Arts group is amazing with their generosity and support. ”

After years of singing his way into the hearts of millions of Disney guests, Bert Rodríguez shared his knowledge with these specials students, most of whom had never sung in a choir before.

“There is such a great amount of trust that they gave me,” Rodriguez said. “So it’s nice to see that kind of result and to see them realize that they can do something they couldn’t do before.”

A Gift for Teaching’s music program has also been selected by Encore! Cast Performing Arts group to receive the proceeds from a benefit concert later this month.  Founded in 2002, The Encore! Cast Performing Arts group enables Walt Disney World Cast Members and their families to showcase their talents and perform great music for worthy causes. This year, “The Art of the Possible – The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber” includes nearly 500 singers, dancers, actors and instrumentalists who volunteer their time for the production.

On the last day of summer music camp, the students performed on stage, with Rodriguez directing the choir.  The kids also attended an Encore! rehearsal at Disney’s Hollywood Studios where the group is getting ready for its own concert series.

“The rehearsal was amazing,” said 12th grader Angelica Chen. “When they started playing it was so organized and in tune that it gave me goose bumps the whole time.”

The production will run at Premier Theater at Disney’s Hollywood Studios July 19, 20, and 25-28. Tickets are available at www.encorecentral.org.

“Honorary” VoluntEARS will work alongside Disney employees and nonprofits, including Feeding America, the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank, Inside the Outdoors, First Book and local Boys & Girls Clubs on one of three service projects:

  •   Create healthy snack packs for a local food bank: Fans will pack healthy snack bags for kids and families in Los Angeles County. Snack packs will be distributed through the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank.

Scoop on Disney Fastpasses

Disney offers a FastPass system to any guest who has a park ticket.  And, on the horizon, is Disney’s new FastPass+ system, where you can reserve several attractions before you even leave home!  But, using these for the optimal touring time can be challenging and confusing-especially if you are a first time visitor.  However, they can also add more magic to your vacation and less waiting time in line.  Less wait means more magic, right?  So, I want to share with you some FAQs regarding FastPasses.

What is a Fastpass and how do I get one?

A Fastpass is a small ticket that allows you to return to a Disney attraction at a specific time and board with little to no wait.  If you have a Disney park ticket, you have access to Fastpasses.  You can find the locations for Fastpass distribution locations on the park maps.  At the Fastpass distribution machine, insert park tickets for EACH member of your party who wants to enjoy the attraction.  Everyone in your group who wants to board with a FastPass must have one.

Does every attraction have the Fastpass option?

No. Only certain attractions have this as an option for park visitors.  Typically these are attractions that are very popular and experience long waits.  For example, Test Track, Soarin’, Expedition Everest, Splash Mountain, Space Mountain, and Toy Story Midway Mania are among the many attractions that support FastPass.

I approached the Fastpass machine, and it’s covered.  Why?

That means the attraction has given all its Fastpasses for the day, or they are not distributing FastPasses at that time.

My FastPass return time is 1:00 pm-2:00 pm.  When can I board the ride?

You can board the ride anytime between 1 and 2 pm.  If you return after 2 pm, you may be denied access to the ride via the FastPass entrance.  Watch your times, and make sure your FastPass return time works with the rest of your touring plans for that day.

Can I get multiple FastPasses during the day?

Yes.  When the FastPass distribution machine gives you your FastPass, it will have two times on there.  One is your return time.  The other is when you are allowed to collect a FastPass for another attraction.

With Disney rolling out the new FastPass+ system, you’ll be able to reserve spots in line for attractions before you even leave home.  You can also choose from character greetings, Wishes, Illuminations, and more!  You don’t have to use FastPass+, but it’s another great way to utilize your My Magic Bands, and could be very helpful with planning your days in the parks.

Here is more info about the My Magic+ in case you were interested.

Don’t forget to watch for Special or Bonus Fastpasses. We don’t get them on every trip but it is very welcomed when we do get one. Our last trip I went to get fastpasses for Peter Pan and picked up some Surprise Fastpasses for Mickey’s PhilharMagic.

If you prefer the traditional FastPass system, you can still utilize it.  There are many ways to get the most out of Disney’s FastPass system.  What attractions do you like to “FastPass?” Let us know in the comment box below.

One of my favorite part of blu-ray and DVD packages has always been the special features. I’m a movie guy, so I always love to see the making of features, deleted scenes, listening to cast and crew commentaries, and whatever else the studio can throw onto the discs. Some of the best special features have come from Marvel Studios over the last few years, where they have everything from the above mentioned, but the highlights always seem to be the short films that expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thankfully, it looks like another new short film has been added to the ‘Iron Man 3‘ blu-ray release, entitled ‘Marvel One Shot: Agent Carter’, which focuses on Peggy Carter, from ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, and has ties to the plot of ‘Iron Man 3’. I always love seeing the way Marvel finds anyway they can to expand this Cinematic universe, and the short films are a perfect way to do that.

The other features include deleted and extended scenes from the film, a commentary with Director/Writer Shane Black, and his co-writer Drew Pearce, a gag reel, and some making of features, and a sneak peek at ‘Thor: The Dark World’. It looks like it’s going to be a pretty nice set, so I’m excited to see what Marvel has in store for us. Hit the jump for the full press release. Will you be picking up ‘Iron Man 3’ on blu-ray?

A Southern California man was sentenced to eight years in state prison for illegally importing counterfeit Disney merchandise from China and selling it over the Internet.

Larry James Allred, 58, pleaded guilty to a court offer of one felony count of trademark infringement, according to a statement from the Orange County district attorney’s office.

Prosecutors said Allred, had two previous strikes: a 1975 rape conviction and a 1978 conviction for rape and kidnapping.

As part of his sentence, Allred will also have to pay $201,000 in restitution, prosecutors said.

His partner in crime, Robert Edward Smyrak, 54, of Anaheim was sentenced to one year in jail, three years probation and was ordered to pay restitution after he pleaded guilty in 2011 to one felony count of trademark infringement.

Between January 2010 and April 2011, prosecutors said, the men sent genuine Disney collectible pins to a Chinese manufacturer to be replicated and then sold the merchandise online in bulk.

It is reported they sold almost 1 million counterfeit items, often for less than $1 per pin.

In 2011, the men were caught when Customs officials opened a parcel at LAX addressed to Smyrak that contained more than 150 pounds of counterfeit pins. They were arrested by Anaheim police, and at the time, were in possession of more than 91,000 counterfeit pins.

TEEN BEACH MOVIE DVD COMING JULY 30th. ALONG WITH THE SOUNDTRACK IN STORES NOW!

Movie Premieres Friday, July 19

“Teen Beach Movie” will be released on DVD at retailers nationwide on July 30. An exclusive new music and dance number including behind-the-scenes rehearsal footage, and an in-packed collectible surfboard zipper pull, will be available on Disney DVD at retailers nationwide and at Walmart exclusively on July 19

California surf sounds of the 1960s, Motown R&B, rockabilly and pop make up the soundtrack of “Teen Beach Movie” — a song, sand and surf fest set inside a retro beach party movie. The songs and orchestral score capture the togetherness of summer and continue Disney Channel’s high standard of musical storytelling for kids, tweens and families.
The “Teen Beach Movie” soundtrack releases today, Tuesday, July 16, from Walt Disney Records. The television premiere of “Teen Beach Movie,” a Disney Channel Original Movie, is FRIDAY, JULY 19 (8:00 p.m., ET/PT) on Disney Channel U.S. followed by telecasts on Disney Channels around the world. A weekend of programming events, including a Sing-Along telecast hosted by the cast, will be presented on Disney Channel. Radio Disney will sample a song from the soundtrack in its Top 30 Countdown, July 19-21.

“Teen Beach Movie” introduces confident surfer McKenzie (“Mack”) and her carefree boyfriend Brady, a fan of the retro surf musical movie, “Wet Side Story.” On the morning of McKenzie’s scheduled departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last epic wave which mysteriously carries them right into “Wet Side Story,” circa 1962, where they meet Seacat, Giggles, Rascal and Cheechee, among others. Amidst the spontaneous song and dance, there’s trouble in paradise — it’s bikers versus surfers for control of the local hangout, but Mack and Brady unwittingly interfere with the movie’s star-crossed plot, one that would pair a surfer (the teen matinee idol Tanner) and a biker (Lela, the sister of Butchy, the biker gang’s leader). Typical of the teen beach movie genre, a kooky subplot has mad scientists Les Camembert and Dr. Fusion scheming to alter weather patterns, take over the local hangout and then, the world.

To develop the movie’s sound, the creative team of Vince Marcello, Robert Horn and director Jeffrey Hornaday collaborated closely with Steven Vincent, Vice President, Music and Soundtracks, Disney Channels Worldwide. They called upon an accomplished group of songwriters and producers to deliver songs that are a jubilant portrayal of summer fun.

“Our young audience will experience the unmistakable sound of the 60s — surf music, Motown-inspired R&B and danceable rock ‘n’ roll. The variety of musical styles from that period allowed for a fresh take on choreography as well as some great musical comedy moments for kids and families to experience together,” said Steven Vincent.

The movie was directed by Jeffrey Hornaday (Disney Channel’s “Geek Charming,” choreographer of the films “A Chorus Line,” “Flashdance”) and choreographed by Hornaday and Christopher Scott (“Lemonade Mouth,” “Step Up 4”).

The orchestral musical score, composed by David Lawrence (“High School Musical” 1-3), includes contemporary and 1960s sounds, strings, horns and homage to “A Summer Place” starring Sandra Dee and Troy Donahue. The score incorporates three distinctly different orchestral tones to punctuate scenes ranging from comedic, romantic and suspenseful.

The songs are:
“Oxygen”

Performed by Maia Mitchell, this energetic reggae/pop opening number sets the stage for a summer dream that’s coming true for two young and in love surfers having a blast catching every wave they can together. The song was written and produced by Antonina Armato and Tim James (Selena Gomez’s “Love You Like a Love Song”) and originally released by recording artist Hoku on Walt Disney Records.

“Surf Crazy”

Songwriters and producers David Lawrence and Faye Greenberg deliver the fun, fun, fun of the teen beach party in this feel good anthem that introduces the nicest kids in town, the Surfers of “Wet Side Story,” the movie within the movie. Performed by the cast, the song is complete with heavenly ooohs and aaahs and a big dance break that gives nod to the roll call scenes of many teen beach movies of the 1950s and 60s.

“Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’”

The Bikers (aka The Rodents) are introduced in this bold and stylish dance song performed by Ross Lynch (Brady), Grace Phipps (Lela) and songwriter Jason Evigan and written by Mitch Allan, Jason Evigan, Jason Charles Miller and Nikki Leonti. Drawing on classic references of the 1950s including Jerry Lee Lewis and Chubby Checker, the song and choreography paint a smooth, steady and stark contrast between the Bikers and the decidedly more 1962 Surfers. The scene also pays homage to “West Side Story” and features a jukebox moment that recalls Fonzie in “Happy Days,” among others. the song was produced by Mitch Allan and Jason Evigan.

“Falling for Ya”

Performed by Lela (Grace Phipps) and written and produced by Aris Archontis, Chen Neeman and Jeannie Lurie, this groovy song about finding true love evokes Motown girl group sounds of the 1960s including the Supremes and The Marvelettes. Its hook about falling in love is played out as Lela literally falls off the stage and into Brady’s arms.

“Meant to Be”

The story’s through-line is carried via this romantic comedy song that draws inspiration from a wide palette emblematic of the 1960s including The Temptations, Aretha Franklin, The Beach Boys Pet Sounds album and The Beatle’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club album. Sung by Brady (Ross Lynch), McKenzie (Maia Mitchell), Lela (Grace Phipps), Tanner (Garrett Clayton) and Spencer Lee, it features swing or shuffle piano and elaborate layers of vocal harmonies in two duets — sung cockeyed with the wrong person and eventually, with the one who represents “destiny.” It was written and produced by David Lawrence and Faye Greenberg. The husband and wife team created the happy production value by utilizing timpani, wood blocks, symphonic instruments, gongs and chimes, counter vocals. The song is reprised twice in the movie.

“Like Me”

Filled with harmonies and fun energy, this song is a debate between the 60s kids and the modern kids over gender roles, each from their own era’s perspective. During the number, Mack is transformed into a Biker Girl and Brady becomes a Surfer Guy at separate parties where the boys sing about girls and the girls sing about boys, each trying to define the other group. Written by Antonina Armato, Tim James, Thomas Sturges, Jon Vella and In-Q, it was produced by Antonina Armato and Tim James.

“Can’t Stop Singing”

Written and produced by Aris Archontis, Chen Neeman and Jeannie Lurie, and performed by Brady (Ross Lynch) and McKenzie (Maia Mitchell), this funny and sweet song comes as the movie within the movie begins to overtake the romantic leads. Mack suddenly breaks into a cute love song and Brady joins her in a duet – but once they start, they find they can’t stop singing. Classic ukulele sounds blend with a wide variety of influences including pop, rock, reggae and R&B.

“Surf’s Up”

Performed by Brady (Ross Lynch), McKenzie (Maia Mitchell) and the cast, this song was written by Ali Dee Theodore, Alana De Fonseca, Jordan Yaeger and Garrett Kotecki and produced by Ali Dee Theodore. It sums up the movie’s sentiment and marks the return to modern day where teens still rule the beach. Played as a salute to “Surf Crazy” earlier in the movie, it includes a 1960s beach movie vibe but with a more contemporary track.

“The Coolest Cats in Town”

This song, featured over the movie’s comedic ending, is the ultimate dance battle of surfers versus bikers. Performed by Spencer Lee, Grace Phipps and Jason Evigan, the song and dance number’s rehearsal is featured on the “Teen Beach Movie” DVD. The song was written by Mitch Allan (Demi Lovato’s “Heart Attack”), Jason Evigan and Nikki Leonti, and produced by Mitch Allan and Jason Evigan.
