Top 7 Things to Buy BEFORE You Travel to Walt Disney World

If you’re like me, packing for Walt Disney World can be a process that takes place over a few months, weeks, and then down to the final days.  After many trips to “the World”, I’ve realized some things are better to just buy before you go to the parks.  No worries, I like to shop on my vacation, too, but I’d rather spend my money on fun souvenirs than the items on the list below.  If you are on the lookout for these items, months or weeks before your trip, you can get them at the store and stash them away, that way, you aren’t caught in a pinch while at the parks.  You’re prepared, and these items will more than likely be cheaper at home than they are in the parks.

  • Ponchos.  I never realized the importance, or expense, of ponchos until the uber-rainy trip we took in 2012.  I know, it rains in Florida everyday.  But when you are stuck in the World of Disney for 25 minutes because the weather is so severe and they aren’t letting people out, that’s a different kind of rain.  And when your two year old spends more time in her poncho than in that super cute dress she was going to wear to meet the princesses, that’s a different kind of rain.  But, I digress.  Anyway, buy ponchos before you leave home.  The ones at Disney are SO expensive, and you don’t want to have to buy them on a whim.  Grab some at the dollar store, and toss them in your touring bag.  You’ll be glad you did.
  • Sunscreen.  Another “must pack” for the Florida sun.  Sunscreen at the resorts or shops will cost you at least $12 or up.  You’ll need it anyway, as we all know the Florida sun can be intense.
  • Spray Bottles with Fans.  They do sell these in the parks, and we do have one.  But we’ve used it for a few trips now, and I know that when it’s time to replace it, I’ll buy one from Target or something and cut out a Mickey head or something out of vinyl to “Disney” it up.  I will say, these are very useful, and my kids love them.  They can bring relief, and it’s something that we use when we are in the parks.
  • Disney T-shirts.  The Disney store will often have their t-shirts on sale throughout the year.  We stop by ours, or order online, to get some before going to the parks.  Or, like this past trip, I made some for the kids.  We only wear them for character meals, so we don’t buy a lot of them.  But, if the Disney store has them on sale, I tend to get a few here and there.  That way, when we are in the parks, we can concentrate on getting other souvenirs or satisfying that craving for a Mickey ice cream bar.
  • Glow Sticks, Wands, Swords, etc.  If you’ve ever been to the Main Street Electrical Parade, Wishes, or Illuminations, you’ll see that all the cool kids have fun glowing toys.  And yes, our kids have one straight from the streets of Main Street USA.  However, I like to pick up a few glow sticks, etc., from the Dollar Tree before we go.  They fit so much nicer in our touring bag, and the kids love to deck themselves out in glowing attire for the night shows and parades.
  • Liquid Hand Soap.  The Disney Resorts provide bar soap, along with the normal hotel toiletries, for their guests.  But, liquid hand soap is so much nicer because it doesn’t slip out of your hands.  And, if you wear contacts, liquid hand soap rinses away much cleaner, and you could use it to wash your resort mugs, etc. if you are in a pinch.
  • Brita Water Bottles.  The Disney Parks are sweet enough to offer free iced water to guests at any QSD or food kiosk.  However, the water doesn’t exactly taste filtered.  Buy the Brita Water Bottles, as they come with a filter in the cap.  Then, ask for your free water, transfer it to the Brita one, and voila.  Your water is better than if you had drank it directly out of the cup.

So, what will you be adding to your packing list?  Do these sound reasonable?  I’ll be sharing what you should buy at the Disney Parks soon!

Have a magical day!

Should you Book your Disney Vacation now or later?

calm

Now that you have all of the information about your Disney World Resort, dining, and tickets you may be wondering – “should I book now or later“?

Here are some things to consider:

No rush, I have time…Disney is the most popular family travel destination on the planet.  Certainly, some resorts are more sought after than others.  Are you concerned that your room might sell out?  It is a real possibility.  Solution?  Make that $200 deposit and you will be sure to have that coveted room, even at the busiest times of the year.  Even if Free Dining pops up!

What if my plans change…Disney has a very liberal cancellation policy.  In the event that some catastrophe keeps you from going to Disney at your planned time (and let’s face it – to cancel your Disney trip is truly a catastrophe of monumental proportions!)  Don’t worry – you will get a full refund as long as it’s more than 45 days before your travel date.  So, go ahead, make that deposit and secure your room – what is there to lose?

But, it still feels like this vacation is very expensive…even though Disney is the best deal going when you compare it to the cost of other vacations, I agree – vacations are pricey.  Here is the great news:  you can treat a Disney vacation like it’s on layaway!  Pay a little bit each month (your travel agent can work out a payment schedule with you or keep no schedule at all – it can be whenever you’ve got the dough!), and before you know it- your vacation is paid off!  Imagine coming home from a vacation and NOT dreading your next credit card bill – it’s a wonderful thing!

So, good for you for thinking ahead and planning your vacation ahead of time!  Today is the perfect day to make that deposit- secure your favorite room, have your plans set in case a promotion pops up that your travel agent can apply, and pay as you go.  All that’s left to do is enjoy your magical trip!

You’ve done all of the hard work and organizing already.   Don’t let it go to waste by waiting too long to book.  Just some friendly tips, I don’t want you to miss out on that spectacular room at your favorite resort just because you thought that you had plenty of time left!

Disneyland Resort Canoe Races Celebrate 50 Years

Disneyland canoe races

This summer, 80 teams of Disneyland Resort cast members raced around the Rivers of America during one of the oldest cast traditions: the Disneyland Resort Canoe Races.

The canoe races began in 1963 when Ray Van De Warker, foreman of the Indian War Canoes attraction, observed a guest canoe filled with athletes charging around the Rivers of America. Ray and Jungle Cruise foreman Bob Penfield debated how fast their teams could get around the river and a challenge was set forth between the Frontierland cast and Adventureland cast. That summer ignited a cast tradition that has spread to the Walt Disney World Resort, Toyko Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort.

Magic is Back..

It’s a whole new chapter for Storybrooke as Once Upon a Time: The Complete Second Season is released on Blu-ray August 13th.

Having become a fan of Storybrooke during the second season I caught up the whole series on Netflix a couple months before the third season came out. So when our good friends at ABC studios asked if anyone wanted to volunteer my hand shot up quicker than Snow White’s arrow.  I got to watch all 22 episodes on HD Blu-ray and I have to say, it was amazing ! The special effects and the story even, are so much more on this version.

It also comes with a new feature, Season Play. Exclusively on Blu-ray, it allows you to keep track of what episode you are watching. You can create a personalized profile for each member of the family and it will automatically remember where you left off, even if you eject the disc and come back later.

Synopsis:

“Relive every thrilling moment of the fairy tale-inspired series casts it’s tantalizing spell onto Blu-ray/DVD. The curse is broken, magic has arrived, and there’s no telling what – or who – will be unleashed! now the exiled fairy tale characters must grapple with a flood of awakened memories as they come to grips with their new reality. Old loyalties will be tested, new heroes will emerge, and vengeful villains will wreak havoc. Amidst the backdrop of previously unexplored lands and a newly magical Storybrooke, love and sacrifice will set the stage for the ultimate battle between good and evil.”

Talent/Cast:

“Once Upon a Time” stars Ginnifer Goodwin as Snow White/Mary Margaret, Jennifer Morrison as Emma Swan, Lana Parilla as Evil Queen/Regina, Josh Dallas as Prince Charming/David, Emilie de Ravin as Belle, Colin O’Donoghue as Hook, Jared S. Gilmore as Henry Mills, Meghan Ory as Red Riding Hood/Ruby and Robert Carlyle as Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold.

Bonus Features:

Good Morning Storybrooke – Wake up with Hart Archer and Goldie Locksley as anchors of  Storybrooke’s morning news show. It’s very well done, and quite entertaining.

A Fractured Family Tree – The intertwined lives of the residents of Storybrooke are explained and narrated by Sarah Hyland of ABC’s Modern Family.

Sincerely, Hook – A candid interview with Colin O’Donoghue as he talks about how he “becomes” Captain Hook, the research he did and the fun he has with it.

Girl Power- The cast and crew talk about how they have brought fairy tales into the 21st century with changing the perception of the woman in the show. They show the stronger side of all these characters, the woman don’t just sit around and wait for the men rescue them.

The Fairest Bloopers of Them All – Some great behind scenes bloopers and outtakes from the whole gang of Storybrooke.

Deleted Scenes – A glimpse at the scenes that didn’t make the final cut. (Me personal favorite, Captain Hook and the Jello!!)

Audio Commentaries – Join the cast and crew as they share details about what it was like to make each spellbinding episode come to life.

This 5-disc box set is a must own for anyone that is a fan of Storybrooke. I really enjoyed the bonus features and the new appearance of it in high-def, so much so I am probably going to run  out and buy the first season on HD Blu-ray. It is a definite addition to any collection.

John Stamos Makes A Disneyland Date

John Stamos with someone in the hospital

John Stamos loves to give back to his fans, isn’t that how it should be? He recently took the time to visit a 19 year old fan in the hospital who is suffering from a bacterial infection. During the visit he offered to take her to Disneyland. How cool is that?

He posted this photo of him with Kaitlyn Dobrow to Instagram. She unfortunately lost all her limbs to the infection.

Stamos captioned the picture, “I’m ONLY doing this cause they asked. I said no press.

Kaitlyn’s father told press, “Initially, she cried when she learned about her limbs. But the following day she said this is something I’ll find a way to make work, and joked, ‘Who needs a left arm anyway?'”

She has a great sense of humor, which will benefit her greatly as she learns to live life in an entirely different way than she is used to.

DIY Disney Drinks – ‘Ohana’s Lapu Lapu at Walt Disney World

P1060753
P1060753

lapu

Lots of folks think that Walt Disney World is just for kids, but that definitely not the case – and especially so when it comes to the drink menus at their amazing restaurants – they are full of fun adult drinks, with someone that everyone can enjoy!

‘Ohana is located at Disney’s Polynesian Resort and is one of the most popular Resort restaurants on property. Why, you might ask? Well, they serve up family style breakfast and dinner (family style = all you can eat!) with classic menu items in the morning like Mickey Waffles, eggs and bacon, and a slightly more tropical fare at night – BBQ’d meats and stir fried veggies and noodles are some of the highlights of the meal (Check out their full breakfast and dinner menus)

One item you will find on the dinner cocktail menu is the Lapu Lapu – a tropical rum drink that is served in a real hollowed out pineapple – how cool is that?! If you are not lucky enough to be dining at ‘Ohana anytime soon, then I suggest you whip up a batch of these at home (pineapples are optional, but they definitely make the experience more authentic!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Lapu Lapu Recipe:

Ingredients

1. One part Bacardi 151 or plain light rum

2. One part Myers dark rum

3. Two parts orange juice

4. Two parts sweet-n-sour mix

5. Pineapple (optional)

Directions

1. Combine the first four ingredients, and shake over ice

2. Serve in hollowed out pineapples (or a glass with a colorful umbrella, if no pineapple is easily accessible)

3. Enjoy!

The great thing about this recipe is that it can be adjusted to serve 1 or a crowd! And if someone in your family is more into whiskey, then they can still stay with the tropical vibe by making the Backscratcher, another ‘Ohana cocktail featuring Jack Daniels

Oh, and if you’re hungry after slaving over those pineapples, I suggest you whip up a batch of Honey Coriander Chicken Wings – a star off the ‘Ohana dinner menu that will go perfectly with those drinks

And if you want more Disney recipes, be sure to check out the recipe section here on Chip and Co, and there are plenty of Disney Cookbooks available out there too so you can bring Disney Dining home and into your kitchen

Disney Power Outage at T-Rex in Downtown Disney

Guests at the T-Rex cafe in Downtown Disney were asked to evacuate earlier after a fire alarm triggered a power outage. It appears now that it was false alarm.

Several guests took to twitter to vent their frustration. They were sent to the Rainforest Cafe for immediate seating. I love how Disney always has a back up plan and accommodates everyone.

Reedy Creek Fire officials said power has been restored at the T-Rex Cafe. Disney said reports by guests that there was a fire in the restaurant’s kitchen were false.

The 10 Catchiest Songs of the Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World

P1050577
P1050577

sw

There are so many things to love about the Magic Kingdom…the sights…the happiness…the music!

Being completely immersed in the magic of Disney means that we encounter a lot of incredible tunes; some of which are earworms waiting to happen! In case you aren’t familiar with the term; an earworm is a catchy song that plays in your head, long after the music has ended.

Just for the fun of it, I have compiled a list of the 10 Catchiest Songs of the Magic Kingdom that you may find yourself singing for days or even weeks after your Disney vacation:

10. “Good Morning

This tune made famous in the movie, “Singing in the Rain”, is sung every morning at the Rope Drop Ceremony during the opening of the Magic Kingdom. If you have the opportunity to attend the Rope Drop, you may end up singing this song all the way down Main Street U.S.A.

9. “The Tiki Tiki Tiki Room

The signature track from Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room still delights audiences to this day. Animatronic birds sing while you sit amongst a tropical island setting of flowers and Polynesian decorations.  After the show, you can order a Dole Whip and sing this song for everyone in line! All together…

8. “There’s a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow

Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress walks us through a family’s experience with technology from the turn of the century to present day. The song plays after every scene as we are whisked away from one decade to another. You will be humming this song over and over and over again when you are standing in line later at Space Mountain.

7. “Wishes

The Wishes Nighttime Spectacular is a fireworks extravaganza that occurs nightly at the Magic Kingdom. The title track accompanies some inspirational words from Jiminy Cricket. You may find yourself saying, “Star light, star bright, this song keeps playing in my head tonight.”

6. “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah

To celebrate Br’er Rabbit’s great escape from Br’er Fox and Br’er Bear on Splash Mountain, we are greeted by a cast of characters belting out this happy tune.  Singing and clapping as you glide along in your log boat is perfectly acceptable and even encouraged.

5.  “The Main Street Electrical Parade Theme

The “Baroque Hoedown” was written by Jean-Jacques Perrey and Gershon Kingsley in 1967 and became the theme for the legendary parade in the 70’s. The song can be heard continuously throughout the 20 minute parade, so it’s sure to stay with you for a little while.

4.  “How Do You Do?

Riding through Splash Mountain, this song merrily plays as we are introduced to the residents of Chick-A-Pin Hill.  You will likely stop singing it long enough to enjoy the final drop; however you may immediately start whistling the melody as soon as you exit the ride.

3. “Grim Grinning Ghosts

Disney’s Haunted Mansion sure is a lot of fun and so are its 999 happy haunts. You will want to “hurry back” to the ride for another chance to hear this memorable ditty.

2. “Yo Ho

The Pirates of the Caribbean gives us a glimpse into the adventures of Captain Jack Sparrow. Set sail, take in the song and keep the melody going while you try on pirate hats in the ride’s gift shop. ARRRR!

and last but certainly not least…

1. “It’s a Small World

It’s arguably the catchiest song in all of the Disney parks. I bet you are singing it right now, aren’t you?

What are your favorite songs from the Magic Kingdom? Are there any that stick with you for a little while after you leave the parks?

Monsters University Coming to Blu-ray and DVD on October 8, 2013

MonstersUniversity3DBlurayComboArt
MonstersUniversity3DBlurayComboArt

MonstersUniversity3DBlurayComboArt

Get ready, guys Monsters University is coming! Disney has just announced that the monstrous duo of James P. Sullivan and Michael Wazowski are headed home on October 8, 2013. This past June, Pixar took us back to the world of ‘Monsters, Inc.’, but not in a way many expected. The film took us backwards in time, taking us to Mike and Sulley’s college years, where the dynamite scarers aren’t best friends, but actually rivals at their scare school. It was a very inventive way to take another look into the world that Pixar introduced us to back in 2001. The film surprised me in a lot of ways, and was actually my favorite Pixar film in quite some time, and I was sad I didn’t get a chance to revisit the characters more times in theaters.

Thankfully, Disney must have heard my distress, and has announced that ‘Monsters University’ is coming to blu-ray and DVD on October 8, 2013! The set looks to be full of bonus features that I can’t wait to dig into, including deleted scenes, an audio commentary, and what looks to be quite a bit of behind the scenes footage on the making of the film. It’s going to be great to add this one to my collection.

Are you excited to add ‘Monsters University’ to your movie collection? Let me know in the comments below, only here at Chip and Company, and check out the full press release for the film below.

This Fall, Disney•Pixar celebrates homecoming with the release of “Monsters University” on Digital HD and Digital HD 3D on October 8, 2013, followed by the 4-Disc Ultimate Collector’s Edition Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, 3-Disc Collector’s Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack,

3-Disc Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and On-Demand on October 29, 2013.

After scaring up big laughs in theaters, the in-home release of “Monsters University” opens its doors to the movie in stunning high definition Blu-ray, and provides hours of all-new bonus material, in-depth behind the scenes features, deleted scenes, the animated theatrical short “The Blue Umbrella” and much more. Directed by Dan Scanlon (“Cars,” “Mater and the Ghostlight,” “Tracy”), produced by Kori Rae (“Up,” “The Incredibles,” “Monsters, Inc.”), and written by Dan Scanlon and Robert Baird & Dan Gerson (“Monsters, Inc.”), “Monsters University” marks Pixar’s 14th consecutive film to debut at number one at the box office.

Ever since college-bound Mike Wazowski (voice of Billy Crystal) was a little monster, he has dreamed of becoming a Scarer—and he knows better than anyone that the best Scarers come from Monsters University (MU). But during his first semester at MU, Mike’s plans are derailed when he crosses paths with hotshot James P. Sullivan, “Sulley” (voice of John Goodman), a natural-born Scarer. The pair’s out-of-control competitive spirit gets them both kicked out of the University’s elite Scare Program. To make matters worse, they realize they will have to work together, along with an odd bunch of misfit monsters, if they ever hope to make things right. “Monsters University” bravely explores themes of self-discovery and the revelations that come with growing up.

Joining Crystal and Goodman as part of “Monsters University’s” monstrously talented voice cast are Steve Buscemi (voice of Randy Boggs), Helen Mirren (voice of Dean Hardscrabble), Alfred Molina (voice of Professor Knight), Charlie Day (voice of Art), Sean P. Hayes (voice of Terri Perry), Dave Foley (voice of Terry Perry), Nathan Fillion (voice of Johnny Worthington) and Aubrey Plaza (voice of Claire Wheeler). Featuring a score from recent Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and award-winning composer Randy Newman (“Monsters, Inc.,” “Toy Story 3”), MU also includes music from Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso of Swedish House Mafia.

  • Scare Games – At Pixar, we play hard while we work. In this look at how the MU animation team worked, you’ll see their process of how they channeled their own monster-selves and created moments on screen that were really funny, really scary and also really serious, sometimes all at the same time.
  • Color and Light – How can a single painting set the tone for an entire scene? We’ll look at the creation of the colorscripts and how they were realized technically in the final film. Along with the process, this piece explores the many layers of technical innovation required to produce such a naturalistic feel.
  • Paths to Pixar – MU Edition – When one door closes, sometimes another door opens – one with an even more exciting opportunity behind it. Members of the MU crew tell their own compelling backstories and share the challenges they overcame along their paths to Pixar.

  • “The Blue Umbrella” – This animated short film from Pixar Animation Studios, directed by Saschka Unseld and produced by Marc Greenberg, played in theaters in front of “Monsters University.” “The Blue Umbrella” tells the story of an evening commute in which the rain starts to fall and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters. And in the midst, two umbrellas—one blue, one not—fall eternally in love.
