Celebrating Christmas with Mickey and the Gang at Disney World

Celebrating Christmas at Disney is a very special treat, indeed!  You can’t help but get into the Christmas spirit when you visit the parks and resorts.  The decorations are beyond compare, the food and treats…spectacular, the parades are magical, and the best part?  Seeing it all with the ones you love.

Here are some of my favorite things when visiting Disney around the holidays.:

mickey

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party – this is a separately ticketed event at the Magic Kingdom that is sure to touch even the biggest Scrooge right in the mushy part of their heart.

Not to miss: The beautiful lights on Cinderella’s Castle.  Magnificent icicles form all over the castle twinkling with magic with one swoosh of the Fairy Godmother’s wand.   Also, Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade featuring the “Big Guy” himself – SANTA!  Other wonderful events include Holiday Wishes, a special fireworks show and complimentary cookies and hot cocoa.

Glow

Osborne Family Spectacle of  Dancing Lights  – Now with Glow With The Show!  This is free with park admission every night (you purchase the glowing ears) at Hollywood Studios during the holidays – be sure to treat your family to this amazing decorating feat.  All of the lights are synchronized to music and are hung end to end…just like you would do at home.  Can you imagine what that must take to set up?  Anyone who has ever tried to hang lights outside on their house will truly appreciate this extravaganza!

candlelight processional

Candlelight Processional at Epcot – Join special narrators each night like Whoopie Goldberg, Neil Patrick  Harris, and Sigourney Weaver as they tell the greatest story ever told  at the American Gardens Theater.  Accompanied by a choir and orchestra, this event is a wonderful way to enjoy and share the meaning of the season with your family.

Decorations at the Disney Resorts – No matter which resort you are visiting, you are sure to be dazzled by the decorations at each.  Some of my favorites are: The life- sized Gingerbread House at The Grand Floridian, The Holiday Gazebo at Disney’s Boardwalk Inn made out of gingerbread and chocolate, and the humongous tree at the Contemporary.

Sleigh Ride at Fort Wilderness – Take in the unspoiled beauty of the woodlands surrounding Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and see them as you’ve never seen them before. Your group of up to 4 adults (or 2 adults and 3 small children) will be laughing all the way as you ride in a horse-drawn carriage done up like a sleigh, festooned with festive lights and garlands for the holidays.

Holiday sleigh rides depart from the main entrance of Crockett’s Tavern at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground every 30 minutes and are offered nightly during the month of December. Due to their seasonal nature, reservations are strongly recommended and can be made up to 180 days in advance by calling (407) WDW-PLAY, or (407) 939-7529.

Thinking about visiting Disney for the holidays?  DO IT!  You won’t be disappointed,  just make sure your trip is long enough to take it all in!  You may never spend Christmas anywhere else again.

Talking Mickey Mouse is New at Magic Kingdom in Walt Disney World

Talking Mickey
Talking Mickey

talking

The Disney Imagineers are always surprising me!  They are always thinking of new ways to create the Disney magic.  The latest magic is talking Mickey Mouse.  Yes, Mickey Mouse talks in the shows but he has never talked in the Character Meet & Greets.  It has always been the lead or PhotoPass photographer that talks to the guests.  Mickey just nods his head.  Now, Mickey Mouse TALKS!

The Character Meet & Greet, I am referring to is located at Magic Kingdom Park.  You will meet with magician Mickey on Main Street USA.  He greets you, says “cheese” and even sings Happy Birthday.  It is amazing, but can be a little scary for the kids.  My kids (ages 7 & 9) see Mickey Mouse at Disney World almost every week.  When he talked to them, they both took a step back.  They were so used to him not talking, it caught them off guard.  Once they got used to Mickey Mouse, they loved this experience.  It is truly an amazing way to create a magical moment for guests visiting Disney World.

Join my family as we spent a day at Magic Kingdom Park to meet talking Mickey Mouse.

A New Baby Zebra at the Animal Kingdom Lodge Savanna

Baby Zebra Animal Kingdom
Baby Zebra Animal Kingdom

Baby Zebra at Animal Kingdom

There’s a new addition to the savanna at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. In October, the team welcomed a rare, baby Hartmann’s Mountain zebra.

The filly and her mother are bonding well and doing fine after the yearlong gestation.  Disney’s animal care team, including veterinarians carefully monitored the mother throughout her pregnancy.

Typically found in mountainous regions of southwestern Africa, the species is characterized by a striking pattern of narrow vertical stripes covering its head and body. The species is considered endangered, with only 50 Hartmann’s mountain zebras in the United States and an estimated 7,000 throughout the world.

Disney’s Animal Programs team is actively involved in the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan for this critical species. The team is proud to have a successful birth of a rare species.

The Hartmann’s mountain zebra is listed as vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List of threatened species, which determines the risk of extinction to animals. The zebra’s endangerment continues due to experience of loss of habitat in their native Africa.

A few fun facts about zebras:

  • With three species of zebra, they can be distinguished by their stripes: plains zebras have wider stripes that wrap around their bellies. The Hartmann’s Mountain zebras have thinner stripes that don’t extend around the belly.
  • No two individual zebras look exactly alike.
  • Most scientists believe that the zebra’s stripes may serve to break up the outline of the zebra’s body in the herd and provide some camouflage when the zebra is standing in tall grass.
  • The Hartmann’s Mountain zebra can weigh up to 800 pounds and grow up to eight and a half feet.
  • Mountain zebras eat mostly grass, bark, leaves and tree and shrub shoots. Though they prefer mountainous regions for their habitat, they are known to move to lower elevations to graze in cold weather and seek shelter in caves or wooded areas.

How adorable is he?

Club Cool offers new flavors at EPCOT

Club Cool

Club Cool recently changed its selection of Coca-Cola sponsored sodas from around the world. All sodas except for one (Beverly, from Italy which I consider a MUST TRY) are new to the EPCOT location. EPCOT Club Cool is only one of three locations in the world to allow Coke fans to sample drinks from around the world. The other locations are in Atlanta, GA and Las Vegas, NV. The new flavors are:

Beverly– from Italy, it is a popular aperitif and a huge part of the Italian culture

Fanta Pineapple– From Greece, with over 90 flavors from around the world Fanta is a market favorite worldwide.

VegitaBeta – From Japan, combines apricot and passion fruit flavors.

Fanta Melon Frosty – This melon-flavored soda is number one in Thailand.

Bibo – This fruit-flavored juice drink originates from South Africa.

Sparberry – This raspberry cream-flavored soda has been a favorite in Africa since 1955.

Guarana Kuat – This drink, from Brazil is flavored after the guarana berry.

Inca Kola – From Peru, favorite offers a sweet, almost bubblegum-like taste.

Personally, VegitaBeta is my favorite drink followed by Inca Kola. Beverly is still a fun favorite for me especially when there are friends with me who have never tried it before. No matter what your favorite is, visit Club Cool for a free drink or 8! Comment below with your favorites!

Alaska Airlines Disneyland

On November 7th Alaska Airlines is going to reveal something very cool, a Disneyland themed plane.  Head one over the their Facebook page and check out the adorable countdown. There is nothing a Disney addict likes more than a countdown!

I really wish some of the air providers here on the East Coast would do something fun like Alaska Airlines is doing with their planes. What do you think?

Top 10 Holiday Experiences at Disney World

WDW christmas
WDW christmas

WDW_christmasCHRISTMAS AT WALT DISNEY WORLD

I look forward to our trip to Disney World in December ever year. It’s the one trip where we decide to fly instead of driving and we always stay on resort instead of off-resort like we do the rest of the year. The weather is great, although you deal with unpredictable temperatures. The resorts and parks are beautifully decorated. And best of all, the entertainment is phenomenal. You will have more than enough to see and do during your trip, but it really makes it worth spending perhaps a little extra money or dealing with larger crowds to experience it all.

Here are my Top 10 Holiday Experiences at Disney World.

  • Candlelight Processional The first time we saw this, we stood outside of the America Gardens Theatre in EPCOT and watched the last half since we were just passing by. We’ve made a point to see this at least once when we’re in Epcot now because it is such a wonderful holiday experience. It’s not for everyone though, as it is the entire reading of the Christmas story. The orchestra and mass choir really make this such a special treat. Not to mention the celebrity narrators – we’re looking forward to seeing Neil Patrick Harris read the story this year.
  • Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party We attend this every year even though it’s just my husband and I that go, but we wouldn’t miss it. We have to attend MVMCP if we want to see Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade since they don’t start showing it during regular park hours until December 21st. By then the crowds are growing and we would rather avoid those crowds and visit the parks in early December instead. The party is awesome, complete with ‘snow’ on Main Street U.S.A., hot cocoa and cookies galore, entertaining shows, dance parties, and exclusive character meet-and-greets. If you have kids, this is a must-do event! Keep in mind that it does require a separate ticket, so you’ll have to budget that extra cost in for your party. If you’re arriving for your vacation on the night of a party, skip buying park tickets for that day and just purchase the MVMCP tickets instead since you can get in starting at 4PM.
  • Osborne Family Spectacle of Lights I remember the first time I turned the corner and saw the lights on the Streets of America in Hollywood Studios. It brought tears to my eyes, it was that beautiful and amazing. I’m still in awe of all the lights and how they coordinate perfectly with the music. And the ‘snow’ adds that extra magical touch that really makes it feel like Christmas, especially if you’re from an area that rarely sees snow. If you’ve never experienced this magnificent event, be sure to add an evening at Hollywood Studios to your ‘must-do’ list.
  • Castle Dream Lights This one should be pretty obvious that it needs to be on your must-see list. I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures of Cinderella’s Castle when it’s decked out with over 200,000 lights. It will definitely bring tears to your eyes when you first lay eyes on it (or maybe I’m just a sap…). The castle is beautiful year-round, but when those lights are turned on, it becomes a beautiful sight to take in.
  • Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade This is hands down my favorite parade of the entire year at Disney World. The toy soldiers and gingerbread men are always my favorite parts. And if you watch on Main Street, you’ll get a snowy treat to really get you in the holiday spirit. Unfortunately, the parade can only be seen during Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party each year until late December, so if you visit before then, you’ll have to purchase a separate event ticket for the party. This year you can start seeing the parade during normal operating hours beginning on December 21st but that also means larger crowds…
  • Holiday’s Around the World – Storytellers in EPCOT We really enjoyed listening to Father Christmas last year in the UK Pavilion and we plan on stopping to learn more from the other storytellers this year. They wear elaborate costumes and tell the stories of Christmas from their respective countries – some even let the kids get involved with the storytelling. The kids will absolutely love it and they’ll learn more about how other countries celebrate, so check the daily schedule when you arrive to make sure you schedule time to hear the ones you’re most interested in.
  • Gingerbread Creations (Gingerbread Carousel at Beach Club, Gingerbread House at Grand Floridian, Gingerbread Tree at the Contemporary) – I’m amazed and what you can build with food. If you’ve never made it around to these resorts during the holiday season, make it a point to do just that for your next trip. You can see a giant 16ft gingerbread house at the Grand Floridian, the tall gingerbread tree at the Contemporary and the gingerbread (and chocolate) carousel at the Beach Club.
  • Holiday Wishes This is the Holiday version of the usual “Wishes” fireworks show that you can see during the year at Magic Kingdom. Wishes is awesome any time of the year though, not just at Christmas.
  • Christmas Trees around Parks & Resorts – Disney really goes all out with their Christmas trees and you’ll find one at every resort and in all the parks. They are all specifically decorated to fit the theming of the resort or park and some of them are absolutely huge. So be sure to take a tour of the resorts, specifically the deluxe resorts, to view all the beautifully themed trees.
  • Mickey’s Jingle Jungle Parade Animal Kingdom transforms the Mickey’s Jammin’ Jungle Parade into a holiday themed parade each November/December with all the characters dressed in their holiday attire. Who doesn’t love a good parade?

Honorable Mention: Jingle Cruise I can’t really say that this is a ‘must-do’ yet since it’s new to the Magic Kingdom this year and I’ll be experiencing it for the first time in December. But I do enjoy a night ride on the Jungle Cruise, so I’m sure this will be just as funny and great to experience.

Is there anything that I missed that your family likes to see/do when visiting Disney World over the Christmas holiday season?

Disney Twenty Three Saving Mr. Banks Cover

To celebrate the release of Saving Mr. Banks and the upcoming 50th anniversary of Mary Poppins, D23, has dedicated the entire winter issue of its flagship magazine, Disney twenty-three, to the beloved nanny.

The publication is available exclusively to Gold Members of D23, includes exclusive interviews with Saving Mr. Banks stars Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, and Bradley Whitford, as well as director John Lee Hancock. It takes readers behind the scenes of the making of this spectacular new film, which opens this Christmas and looks at the creation of Disney’s Mary Poppins and the sometimes combative but respectful relationship between the character’s creator, P.L. Travers (Thompson), and Walt Disney (Hanks).

Disney twenty-three’s Winter issue also offers a look inside the fascinating life of P.L. Travers, with a personal reminiscence by her friend, author Brian Sibley, whom she once told, “I don’t feel for a moment that I invented her. I feel visited by her.” And original film composer Richard M. Sherman, visual consultant Tony Walton, and choreographers Marc Beaux and Dee Dee Wood offer exclusive insight into the creation of the 1964 Disney classic, which will officially celebrate its 50th anniversary next August.

Also included in the Winter issue of Disney twenty-three:

  • A first-person account of the creation of the stage musical Mary Poppins from Disney Theatrical Productions president Thomas Schumacher
  • “Elements of Fun,” looking at 50 years of unique “Mary merchandise”
  • An in-depth look at the film’s groundbreaking special effects
  • A walk down the red carpet for the Mary Poppins premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre

All D23 Members are invited to visit www.D23.com, where the fan club is kicking off its year-long celebration of Mary Poppins’ 50th anniversary with a unique video reconstruction of the Mary Poppins world premiere, containing five minutes of never-before-released material.

Disney Magic Cruise Exclusive Disney Dooney & Bourke Bags and More

CC1

Recently I was very fortunate to have taken a 2 night cruise on the newly re-imagined Disney Magic cruise ship. One of several things I got to see on-board were these exclusive new Disney Dooney & Bourke collection purses. The first design is that of a gold charm bracelet featuring Captain Mickey, a Disney Cruise Line Ship porthole, the DCL logo, the Mickey cruise logo,  sailor Minnie,  along with some fun accents like anchors, a porthole, a ship and a treasure chest all on a navy blue background. This design will be exclusive to the Disney Magic through the end of the year. A cast member told me that in 2014 the design will be released to all the other ships, but for now it is exclusive merchandise for the re-launch of the Magic.
