Disney World’s Tomorrowland evacuated after bomb threat phone call

Saturday night Disney World’s Magic Kingdom was a little less than Magical for a little while anyway. There was a prank phone call which led to a bomb scare.

Orange County Sheriff’s office said someone called Disney and said there was a bomb on Space mountain. Since guest safety is number 1 to Disney, they evacuated Tomorrowland as a precaution. The evacuation lasted about 2 hours. Tomorrowland did reopen before the park closed.

Fortunately, there was no bomb found.

Is Frozen the Musical coming to Disneyland?

frozen3

The word on the street, Main Street U.S.A. that is, is that Disney’s Frozen is being discussed as a possible replacement to Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular at the Hyperion Theater in Disney’s California Adventure Park.

This has gotten an artist’s rendering completed on it, however the idea is still being worked around and for the moment, Disney has not announced anything regarding any shows being replaced.

Here’s a peek at the Artist’s Rendering:

frozen-disneyland-550x325

Some of you may notice that the layout isn’t what the Hyperion Theater looks like. You’d be right. This rendering is actually of the El Capitan Theater, which isn’t located at the parks at all, but can be found in Hollywood instead.

Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular has been part of Disneyland‘s show schedule since 2003. Only once, in 2009, was an announcement made that the show would be retired and replaced with Toy Story – The Musical. That show was very popular on the Disney Cruise Line, however they received enough criticism from lovers of the Aladdin show that the plans were never followed through with and Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular stayed.

There are a few blogs that are reporting this possibility, but we should caution there is no immediate plans by Disney to change anything. With that said, I think with the upcoming tour of ALADDIN straight off Broadway, now would be a good time for Disney to replace Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular with a new show. Having a full length Broadway show touring the country while running the shorter musical show in the theme parks could create a lackluster reception to the Broadway Style production, as well as unfair comparisons of the two.

Certainly, Frozen has all the right ingredients to be an amazing show. Making a musical version for the parks would be a huge hit I believe. The fantastic music, the beautiful sets and costumes, and the great cast of characters would make this show an overnight hit.

What do you think? Would you like to see Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular be retired at California Adventure and replaced with a new show, perhaps even Frozen – The Musical? Let us know in the comments!

Top 10 Walt Disney World Christmas Trees

Christmas Tree on Main Street 03283 6945 119565
Christmas Tree on Main Street 03283 6945 119565

Town Square at Disneyland

If you’ve visited any of the Disney Parks during the Christmas holiday season, then you know that Disney goes all out in decorating their larger-than-life Christmas trees. Each tree is customized to the park or resort where the tree is found, making them all special in their own little way. Not all are created equal and a little more thought went into some more than others it seems. During our recent trip a few weeks ago, we visited 18 different resorts plus all 4 parks, so I did thorough research to make sure I saw as many different trees as possible.

Here are my Top 10 WDW Christmas Trees.

  • My favorite Christmas tree is the Animal Kingdom Christmas tree found at the main entrance. The beautifully handcrafted ornaments (some are HUGE) really make this tree stand out from the others – I particularly like the lion. The best part of the tree though in my opinion isn’t the tree ornaments, but what surrounds the tree. Every year they place cute ‘toys’ and wooden cut-outs of your favorite animal characters, like Chip & Dale.
  • If you like a bit of nostalgia to remind you of your childhood, then you’ll love the tree found at Downtown Disney Marketplace near Once Upon a Toy. It’s covered in board game pieces and toys like Mr. & Mrs. Potato Head. The base of the tree is decorated with replicas of board game boxes. This is one kids of all ages are sure to love!
  • I’m sure everyone won’t agree on this one, but I love the Christmas tree at Wilderness Lodge. In fact, the whole resort is awesome if you want to just get away from the parks and have a nice spot to sit and relax in a ‘home-like’ setting. Being Native American, I like that they incorporate teepees and canoes to serve as ornaments on the tree and to represent a culture and people often forgotten. You’ll find a lot more Native American displays throughout the resort, so be sure to walk around and view these historical treasures while you’re there.
  • The tree at Magic Kingdom wasn’t up for us when we visited recently, due to Christmas Parade taping, so we didn’t get to see it, but I know that in the past it’s been impressive as well. Much like the Animal Kingdom tree, I think the best part of this tree is what lies below the tree. You’ll find a train set and wrapped gifts underneath. On the tree you’ll find rocking horses and gingerbread men adorning the tree, as well as classic ball ornaments. The Magic Kingdom tree is found inside the park right before you head down Main Street – it’s kind of hard to miss…
  • Although this one isn’t a traditional tree, I think it still deserves a spot in the Top 10. If you’ve visited WDW before during Christmas, then you know that they have larger-than-life Gingerbread displays at several resorts. The Contemporary Resort Gingerbread Tree is always one of my favorite gingerbread displays to see. Imagine a 10 ft. tall (maybe taller) tree made of gingerbread…yup, it’s pretty awesome.
  • Animal Kingdom Lodge is a very beautiful resort even when it’s not decorated for Christmas, so it’s no surprise that their Christmas tree is just as stunning. You’ll find African inspired ornaments adorning this tree and much like the tree at Animal Kingdom, it also features the faces of zebras and other African animals as ornaments.
  • The Grand Floridian is just that, grand! And of course their Christmas tree must be decorated in the fanciest ornaments and décor. You’ll find the birdcages (after all, the resort is known for its birdcage elevator), but my favorite decorations on this tree are the intertwined swans.
  • Although this may be the last year that we’ll get to see these trees, the small uniquely decorated trees in Camp Minnie-Mickey inside Animal Kingdom are adorable. I counted at least 7 different trees, but I’m sure I missed one or two somewhere. You’ll find themed trees for Minnie, Mickey, Stitch, Winnie The Pooh, etc. My favorite is the Winnie The Pooh tree, so be sure to check them all out this year and let’s hope they bring them back next year, even if they’re located elsewhere!
  • The Disney Beach Club has a very cute tree decorated with lighthouses, golden sun medallions and of course, sailboats. Just seeing the tree makes you think of warmer weather and the beach, even if it is cold outside (which does indeed happen in December in Florida…). So head over to the Beach Club, check out the tree and of course, the motorized gingerbread/chocolate carousel they have every year.
  • Port Orleans French Quarter is a beautiful and tranquil resort, one of our favorites to visit in the evenings. Their tree is decorated with small masquerade ball masks and other New Orleans style ornaments. The lobby and entrance to the resort are also gorgeous at Christmas, so be sure to walk around the lobby area and main entrance near the bus stop to take in all that it has to offer.

You’ll probably notice that I left out the trees found at the entrance of Hollywood Studios and World Showcase in EPCOT. I don’t find the one at Hollywood Studios to be very festive and it’s never been one of my favorites. Maybe it’s the film strip that goes around the tree, I can’t really pinpoint why I don’t like it as much as the others. The EPCOT tree just seems to lack some character to me. The tree has large Christmas ornament balls that feature the flags of countries found in World Showcase, but that’s about it. The one thing I do like about the tree is the large angel on top that can be seen from anywhere in World Showcase.

If you’ve visited the parks during the Christmas holiday’s, what is your favorite Christmas tree and why?

Animal Kingdom

As of December 18th, 2013, Disney has begun the testing of FastPass+ at Animal Kingdom Park.  Guests will be able to reserve access to some of the “must do” attractions, such as the Kilimanjaro Safari, Kali River Rapids, and Expedition Everest.

Character meet and greets, as well as shows are also included.  If you have young children, using your FastPass+ for shows such as the Festival of the Lion King or Finding Nemo the Musical could be great for you!  Guests will be able to select up to three FastPass+ experiences at one time at one of the in-Park FastPass+ kiosks and make changes throughout the day.

Be aware that Disney’s FASTPASS Service (paper FASTPASS tickets) will not be available throughout the duration of this test at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Chip heard from a cast member this week the fastpass machines are covered and are on their way out.

Live Shows Make Disneyland Resort a Little Extra Magical

Mickey and the magical map 2
Mickey and the magical map 2

Mickey and the Magical Map

Mickey and the Magical Map” is the newest addition to a long list of live entertainment in the theme parks of the Disneyland Resort. Resort guests enjoy a variety of live performances, and many youngsters get their first taste of live theater in Disneyland Park or Disney California Adventure Park.  Even with all the spectacular rides and attractions in the parks, a Disneyland Resort guest could spend a full day and night simply enjoying the shows, large and small.

Fantasy Faire, near Sleeping Beauty Castle, also features two live shows at Disneyland: “Beauty and the Beast” and “Tangled,” presented in the Royal Theatre in Fantasy Faire.

Throughout Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, guests encounter parades, dance parties, street performances, musical groups and live shows virtually at every turn.  A full list of entertainment is available each day at the park entrances and may include the following:

At Disneyland

  • “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” – Presented daily, it features beloved Disney characters performing to a variety of rhythms and musical styles.
  • “Fantasmic!” – The spectacular long-running show features Disney characters and magical images projected on water, presented on the Rivers of America in Frontierland.
  • “Jedi Training Academy” at Tomorrowland Terrace
  • “Magical,” the summer fireworks show over Sleeping Beauty Castle

At  Disney California Adventure

  • World of Color – The innovative and immersive nighttime spectacular presented on Paradise Bay combines water, color, fire, music and animation.
  • “Disney’s Aladdin – A Musical Spectacular” – The thrilling, live stage adaptation of “Aladdin,” is presented in the Hyperion Theater.
  • “Pixar Play Parade” – The lively playtime parade performs daily, with favorite Disney•Pixar pals.
  • “Mad T Party” – A hip, high-energy nighttime experience filled with music, games and dancing happens in Hollywood Land.
  • “Disney Junior – Live on Stage!”  – Mickey Mouse is joined by favorite Disney Junior show characters, now including Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First.

Parade routes and theatrical venues aren’t the only places where Disneyland Resort guests encounter live entertainment.  There are magical encounters with live Disney and Disney•Pixar characters, and the parks are filled with many other energetic and talented performers.

At Disneyland, the Disneyland Band, the Dapper Dans quartet and the Refreshment Corner Piano Player are all on view on Main Street, U.S.A. In New Orleans Square, the toe-tapping shows star the rowdy piratical Bootstrappers, the Jambalaya Jazz Band and the mellow Royal Street Bachelors. At the entrance to the Golden Horseshoe in Frontierland, guests may encounter the goofy Laughing Stock Company while, down the trail in Big Thunder Ranch, Miss Chris and her friends entertain at Big Thunder Ranch Barbecue. Each summer, guest bands play popular music for dancing at the Tomorrowland Terrace stage, and the gifted musicians of the All American College Band appear on Main Street, U.S.A.

At Disney California Adventure, Buena Vista Street comes alive with the Red Car News Boys and the outgoing, improvisational Citizens of Buena Vista Street. The swinging jazz combo Five & Dime travels through the park on a makeshift jalopy, and Goofy makes his own kind of music in “Instant Concert! …Just Add Water on Paradise Bay. Minnie’s Fly Girls Charter Airline in Condor Flats features Minnie Mouse and her crew in a tune-filled “travelogue” of song and dance.

The fun and inventive world of Phineas & Ferb comes to life in “Phineas & Ferb’s Rockin’ Rollin’ Dance Party” along the walkway of Paradise Pier. On the nearby Paradise Garden Bandstand, musical acts reflecting diverse cultures and nationalities share their unique talents. Green Army Men from “Toy Story” patrol the park with Operation: Playtime!” and the Grammy-winning Mariachi Divas perform regularly in the outdoor dining area of Pacific Wharf.

At Redwood Creek Challenge Trail, the wilderness recreation area in Grizzly Peak, guests may encounter The Happy Camper or view the daily Wilderness Explorer Ceremony in the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail amphitheatre.

The new Cars Land in Disney California Adventure offers in-person greetings by Lightning McQueen, tow truck Mater, fire engine Red (who waters flowers and cleans up the streets) and “DJ’s Dance ‘n’ Drive,” a spontaneous street party designed to get everyone dancing.

The live entertainment experience at Disneyland Resort extends beyond the borders of the parks, with character meals and occasional musical entertainment at the Disneyland Resort hotels, and multiple live musical performances along the walkways of the Downtown Disney dining, shopping and entertainment district. Downtown Disney also offers live entertainment at the House of Blues and Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen.

New Year’s Eve Fun at DisneyQuest in Walt Disney World

Disney Quest New Years Eve Party
Disney Quest New Years Eve Party

Disney Quest New Years Eve Party

Why not start your new year with my favorite phrase, “I’m gonna wreck it!”. Wreck-It-Ralph and Vanellope will bring in 2014 along with Buzz Lightyear, Chip ‘n’ Dale and … you! If you buy a ticket to the DisneyQuest New Year’s Eve Party, that is!

For guests seeking a family-friendly New Year’s Eve party, this is a perfect option. The fun kicks off at 8 p.m. on December 31, 2013, and lasts until 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day. In addition to five floors of virtual fun, guests can also enjoy dinner (included with admission), dancing and the aforementioned Disney characters!

Michelle Homer, DisneyQuest Operations Manager, calls the event “a night of virtual awesomeness” and with unlimited video games, plus all the regular DisneyQuest attractions (except for Buzz Lightyear’s AstroBlaster, which will be converted into a dance floor), there’s something for everyone in the family to enjoy. I hear the New Year’s Eve countdown will be especially colorful.

This event typically sells out, so be sure to get your tickets early; they’re $55 in advance and $65 the day of the event (if available). You can get all the details here, or at the DisneyQuest Box Office or by calling 407-W-DISNEY.

In addition to the DisneyQuest New Year’s Eve Party, Downtown Disney will feature DJ dance parties and live entertainment in all three districts plus a variety of food and beverage offerings including unique menu items from the new Disney Food Trucks and cocktails, beer and wine throughout property.

Tip: Walt Disney World Resort guests should plan to take Disney bus transportation and drivers should allow extra time as heavy traffic is expected.
