Five Ways to Not Let the Diverse Crowds Get You Down at Walt Disney World

evening 1
evening 1

magic

I do not actually know the exact number of people who visit Walt Disney World each year; the Disney Company does not publish those numbers. I would venture a guess in the millions, though. People come from all over the globe to experience the Happiest Place on Earth, because let’s face it: it’s really fun!

Walt Disney World has become a major must-do on many people’s bucket-list. It is no longer just “average” middle-class Americans that flock to the gates and flood the queues of America’s favorite theme park attractions. People from all walks of life and all cultural backgrounds can be found in all Disney parks each and every day of the year.

Some months, such as July and October, have been known to have very large groups of South American tourists; but, in my experience, no matter when you visit there will be all kinds of people from all kinds of places. It can be a great experience to share this fantasy world that Walt Disney created with people from all over the “real world.” If you think about it, Walt wanted us to experience cultural diversity. He gave us It’s a Small World and Epcot’s World Showcase as models.

As wonderful as cultural diversity is, and how amazing it would be for that diversity to work together smoothly, it is easy to become frustrated and annoyed by having to share space and experiences with large crowds of people who do not practice similar cultural etiquettes and behaviors as those we are used to sharing our space and time with every other day of the year. Let’s be frank, though: it is not just international tourists who can do something annoying or rude that (in the moment) can seemingly ruin a great day in the parks. To be honest, I have been that annoying person many times. I am so mesmerized by the experience, and anxious to fulfill an anticipated dream with my family, that I forget to notice that I am standing on someone’s toe or blocking their toddler’s view of the parade. It happens, folks. I can almost guarantee that something will happen during your trip that you will find annoying or odd, so I have compiled a list of five things to keep in mind for the times you want to crinkle your eyebrows or clench your fists.

These five tips will help you enjoy your trip while sharing the parks with a diverse crowd.

1. Make a plan before you get to the park: know which rides you absolutely cannot miss, and make an itinerary. Include your preferred (or reserved) dining choices. Hop on the train and head to Frontierland or New Fantasyland to avoid the crowd walking down Mainstreet USA. Check the online times guides and plan for parades and shows accordingly. Yes, when it is crowded you will need to stake-out a parade and fireworks spot hours  (at least 1.5) before it actually begins. Be prepared to defend that spot. I don’t mean literally fight for it. I mean one person cannot realistically hold eight spots on the curb in front of Cinderella’s Castle while the other seven people go ride Space Mountain. Even if you have eight backpacks, four Goofy hats, and two popcorn buckets, it will be hard to maintain a large space without actual bodies. I suggest all eight of you pick a spot and stay there. It isn’t efficient or as fun as asking Grandma to wait and hold a space, but it will prevent frustration over someone pushing your bags and hats aside to claim the spot for themselves.

2. Get to the parks early, go back to your hotel or visit Downtown Disney or another resort for a couple hours in the afternoon, and come back to the parks in the late afternoon and evening. Another option is to experience the lower-wait attractions during the hottest hours of the day. Country Bear Jamboree, Finding Nemo the Musical, and Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular all offer shaded or air-conditioned seating. Seeing the shows and less popular attractions will get you out of long lines and out of the hot Florida sun. Taking that little break makes a load of difference in dealing with frustrating crowds. During July, it gets really hot in the mid-day. The heat adds to the frustration. Do yourself a favor and find a place to relax for a little while. Don’t make your dining reservations at peak meal times. A great time to ride the popular attractions is when the crowds are stuffing into the restaurants.

3. If you cannot ignore or shake off an irritating moment, do not engage in confrontation. Always locate a cast member if someone has done something exceptionally annoying or rude. Cast members work very hard to uphold policies, but they can’t see everything. Disney has been increasingly hiring bilingual cast members to instruct and assist international visitors. If something has happened, tell a cast member. Place the burden of upholding park policies on the cast members rather than making it your responsibility to enforce the rules yourself. Cast members are trained to handle these types of situations. They are also trained (and very willing) to make sure you have a positive, happy, and wonderful visit.

4. Use your smartphone to attempt a friendly conversation with international visitors while waiting in line. Most phones have a translator app. The grammar will come out all wrong, but it can be a fun way to meet new people and pass the time away during peak wait times. Learning a bit about the people and their country and culture might help you to understand the diversity of behavior and characteristics going on in the parks. Even if you think you don’t have anything to say, you have at least two things in common with them: you are both waiting to experience the same attraction; and you both are excited to be on vacation at Walt Disney World.

5. When things seem to be getting you down and extremely irritable, sing It’s a Small World to yourself (or out loud). Grab a Mickey ice cream bar or churro and try to remember that Walt Disney World is meant to be fun for everyone; try not to let the cultural differences prevent you from having fun, too. It is a small world while you are at any Disney park. It’s a world of laughter, a world of tears; a world of hope and a world of fears. There’s so much that we share that it’s time we’re aware: it’s a small world afterall. Sing it again and again.

How do you manage crowds while visiting during peak season? Share your thoughts and help others have a magical trip!

Minnie in her Halloween costume on Disney Cruise

You can plan on a spook-tacular good time with Disney Cruise Line this fall. Disney Cruise Line will treat guests sailing most dates in September and October to a “ghoulish wonderland filled with frightfully fun events and activities, special decorations, unique menu items in the restaurants and themed parties on deck.”

Halloween on the High Seas, the special Halloween celebrations, will be help on most voyages aboard all four Disney Cruise Line ships from late September through October 2014. There will be Halloween-themed parties, lively entertainment and elaborate décor, including The Pumpkin Tree, which magically transforms throughout the cruise. Other special experiences include:

  • Mickey’s Mouse-querade Party, a celebration held in addition to Pirate Night complete with games, dancing, and plenty of candy! Some of your favorite Disney characters, wearing special Halloween costumes just for the party, will join guests for this fun-filled costume party.
  • A Nightmare Before Christmas—Sing and Scream, an interactive movie experience where you can be part of the action and then enjoy a meet-and-greet with Jack Skellington and Sally.
  • Haunted Stories of the Sea, where only the bravest guests will gather under the stars to hear some true (or not so true) tales of the sea told by a mysterious sea captain.
  • Creepy Cabaret, a party in the atrium with Halloween-themed music performed live by a band of ghostly musicians.
  • Halloween Isn’t Just For Kids: For adults, the nighttime entertainment district on each Disney ship will be a ghoulish setting for a costume contest and a Villainous Takeover on the dance floor.
  • Spooky Movies: To help you get into the spirit of the season, Halloween-themed movies will be shown in the Buena Vista Theatre, on Funnel Vision by the family pool, and in guest staterooms.
  • Ghoulish Delights: Disney Cruise Line chefs have conjured some very special (and delicious) treats just for Halloween, including chocolate cake with pumpkin filling, spider cakes, and even “Spooky Juice.”
  • More spooky fun includes mask-making and a ghostly takeover of the ship announcements!

Halloween on the High Seas will be celebrated on the following sailings:

  • Disney Magic three-, five- and seven-night Bahamian and Caribbean cruises departing Sept. 24 to Oct. 26
  • Disney Wonder four-, five- and six-night Bahamian cruises departing Sept. 26 to Oct. 31

Disney Infinity Characters

Hiya fellow Disney Addicts. I got some incredible news for the many Disney Infinity fans out there. Don’t tell Chippy this because he may just camp out at the store now.

I know what you are thinking, already? It seems as though there has been a job listing for a temporary Game Tester position at Disney Infinity. The software developer developer Avalanche seemed to let some information slip about the sequel of the very popular game.

It appears as though it only includes the following game systems:

  • Xbox 360
  • Xbox One
  • PS4
  • PS3
  • Wii U

Check out the super top secret video:

This will be the first time there have been play sets and toy boxes with Xbox One and PlayStation 4.

I have found no other details so far. So there is no word if the Disney Infinity figures will work with the Disney Inifnity 2.

Anywho that is all the Disney gossip I have right now. For my past articles check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors, please email me at [email protected] or on my facebook page.

Benedict Cumberbatch and the Muppets

Benedict Cumberbatch who is an accomplished British Actor and has appeared in some of my favorite Movies and Television shows like Star Trek and Sherlock decided to drop by Sesame Street and have some fun on the PBS YouTube channel.

Benedict Cumberbatch gets some help from his friend Count Von Count to solve a brain-bending challenge from Murray-arty. #Counterbatch. Benedict very patiently tries to get the skeptical Murray to believe that he is not the real Sherlock Holmes, he just plays him on TV.

He filmed this back in January. Check out the adorable video:

Four Seasons Comes to Walt Disney World – Special Travel Package now available

four seasons

four seasons

Inside the gates of Walt Disney World is a new resort, an ultimate playground located in the southeast corner of the Magic Kingdom park. Beginning August 3, 2014 the doors will open on the new Four Seasons Resort Orlando, which is a blend of the Disney magic and the luxury experience of the Four Seasons.

After days of fun in the parks mix it up at The Mansion, the family hub with outdoor table tennis, pool tables, bocce ball and an observation deck that lets you take in the excitement. More action awaits at The Mansion’s rock climbing wall, and at the nearby basketball and sand volleyball court.

Snaking around The Mansion is Drifters, the lazy river, which takes you past spray cannons, a waterfall and bubbling rapids. When you aren’t shooting through the two clear waterslides to major splashdowns, the Splash Pad entertains, with choreographed fountains, water curtains and spray nozzles. At the Island’s family pool, a gently sloped zero entry is perfect for beginning swimmers, with an underwater audio system that lets them sample the playlist as they practice their float.

The kid-approved Four Seasons experience goes beyond Explorer Island. You can organize a family tennis match on the Har-Tru courts. Or enroll tomorrow’s PGA tour leader in the special program for new golfers at the Tom Fazio-designed Four Seasons Golf Course. The resourceful Concierge also can help arrange close by adventures, like a Disney VIP tour or attending La Nouba by Cirque du Soleil® at Downtown Disney® West Side.

While the adults do grown-up stuff like relax at the adults-only pool or visit the spa, children ages 5 to 12 have real fun in the complimentary Kids For All Seasons program.

Club Penguin

Disney Club Penguin, the #1 virtual world for kids, today launches the global ‘It Starts with You!’ safety campaign to give kids and families the information and resources they need to navigate more safely online. The ‘It Starts with You!’ campaign, developed primarily for tweens and parents of tweens, is Club Penguin’s most ambitious and expansive online safety campaign ever. It will span across multiple platforms including placements on Disney Channel and Disney’s online destinations, integration in the virtual world of Club Penguin, as well as real-world, direct-to-kid components by working with leading online safety and educational organizations.

The ‘It Starts with You!’ online safety campaign will include:

  • A branded campaign on Disney Channel and Disney’s online networks featuring a safety PSA starring G Hannelius from Disney Channel’s “Dog With A Blog,” the hit comedy series for kids and families.
  • An online safety resource center to help kids and parents learn the latest in online safety and empower them to be good digital citizens. The resource center will offer:

  • Within the world of Club Penguin, an in-game quiz to test players’ knowledge about online safety. Players that successfully complete the quiz will earn an exclusive virtual item for their penguin avatar.

“The question is no longer whether kids should be online, but how to prepare them for a social online world,’ said Chris Heatherly, VP of Club Penguin. ‘It Starts with You!’ is about empowering kids and their parents with the information they need to play an active and educated role in online safety.”

The campaign will focus on teaching kids how to:

  • Be cool: and respectful to others online and not post anything that could be hurtful to someone else.
  • Be heard: if they see anything online that worries them, to speak up and tell a parent or trusted adult.
  • Be safe: and protect their personal information online and not share private personal details.

Club Penguin is also supporting leading non-profit and safety organizations to spread the message behind ‘It Starts with You!’ to local schools and communities through new outreach programs.

Upcoming ‘It Starts with You!’ programs include:

  • Safety Tour: Together with Free The Children, Club Penguin will launch the ‘It Starts with You!’ Speaking Tour. Schools across the U.S. will now have free access to a one-of-a-kind youth leadership program that will provide kids with the tools and resources they need to become leaders in bullying prevention.
  • More Online Safety Resources: Club Penguin is working with leading child safety organization, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children through its NetSmartz Workshop to develop an unprecedented online program that will give thousands of educators, parents and youth leaders the tools they need to teach online safety.
  • In-School Activities: Through Scholastic, ‘It Starts with You!’ posters and activity plans will be distributed to more than 90,000 teachers accompanied by a strong digital outreach program that is expected to reach at least 3 million parents and families with the goal of teaching kids how to become responsible, respectful and safe digital citizens.Disney Club Penguin is a leader in online safety and has invested millions of dollars to build one of the most advanced chat and filtering technologies available for kids online today.
