Say Cheese! A Frugal Vegetarian Does Disney Dining at the 4 Parks

disney 2013 134

Allow me to take you on a culinary adventure through the four parks at the Walt Disney World Resort. First things first: I am vegetarian, and I am on a tight budget. Many of the articles I have seen that address vegetarian dining at WDW focus mainly on the table service restaurants. Don’t get me wrong: the table service restaurants are TOP NOTCH and offer a variety of delicious meat-free dishes. However, as a grad student and mother of three I am often not able to afford many table service meals during our stays at WDW. Therefore, I decided to tell you what my favorite counter service and snack cart items are for breakfast, lunch, and dinner (and a snack) at each of the parks. Disclaimer: these options are vegetarian, not vegan.

Magic Kingdom: I love this park! It is truly magical. There are a lot of counter service options, too. One of my absolute must-have breakfast items is at a quick-service kiosk in Liberty Square: Sleepy Hollow’s Nutella and Fresh Fruit Waffle Sandwich.

nutella fruit

This fluffy waffle is coated in creamy, chocolaty, hazel-nutty goodness and topped with sliced strawberries, bananas and blueberries. It is a generous portion; a parent and child could easily share one serving. Now on to lunch… how about a delicious Quinoa Salad – with green beans, potatoes, olives, roasted bell peppers and tomatoes at Be Our Guest in the New Fantasyland? It has a champagne vinaigrette dressing and is a light, but filling delicacy in a supremely elegant and magical place. One great perk to Be Our Guest is that soft drinks are re-fillable; this option is not found at many counter service places in the parks. For dinner, I usually head back to Liberty Square and get a Lighthouse Sandwich with hummus, tomato, and broccoli slaw on toasted multigrain bread at Columbia Harbor House. It is served with potato chips. I might even add the seasonal cobbler for dessert! Last time I was there the peach cobbler had a flaky crust over a warm, gooey sweet peach filling. Would you like to get a snack while waiting for Wishes or perhaps while you wait in line for Pirates of the Caribbean? Of course a Dole Whip would be a delightful idea! You can also grab a box of popcorn, a pretzel, a churro, or a Mickey ice cream bar; those are perfectly fine options. But…how about a vegetable eggroll from the egg roll wagon in Adventureland?

Epcot: This park is a food-lovers dream! World Showcase offers an abundance of delicious and delectable vegetarian choices, however it doesn’t open until 11am. So… for breakfast we usually stop in at Fountainview (now serving Starbucks) for a Spinach, Feta & Cage-Free Egg-white Wrap and a latte or Frappuccino. The wrap is easy to carry on-the-go as you head off to enjoy the many attractions and rides in Futureworld. Come lunch time we are salivating just thinking about the Empanadas de Queso – fresh corn masa (fried dough) filled with Chihuahua white cheese topped with a not-too-spicy green sauce (not too spicy, but has a tangy kick).

empanadas Epcot

The platter is served with corn tortilla chips at Mexico’s La Cantina de San Angel. The portion is large enough for a parent and child to share. This is one of my favorite meals at WDW. In fact, I am not sure I have ever NOT eaten it when visiting!

I like to have dinner at Tangierine Café in the Morocco pavilion. The Vegetable Platter is a perfect collection of savory and filling vegetarian items.  The meal includes falafel (deep-fried chicpea dough), couscous salad, hummus with pita triangles, tabouleh  a salad made with  bulgur, tomatoes, cucumbers, finely chopped parsley, mint, onion, and garlic and seasoned with olive oil, lemon juice, and salt), and a lentil salad with a garnish of  marinated olives. This platter is a great value, but most importantly it tastes REALLY GOOD! Add a piece of baklava (a honey and pistachio pastry) and the meal is a perfect illustration of why World Showcase can be a counter service culinary landscape.

veggie platter Morocco

Staying for IllumiNations? I suggest getting School Bread at Kringla Bakeri og Café in the Norway pavilion. Not only will the viewing area right outside offer spectacular views of the nighttime show, but the sweet pastry bread, filled with vanilla custard and coated in vanilla icing and toasted coconut will be something you talk about and crave for months after your visit.

Animal Kingdom: You would think you could find a plethora of animal-flesh-free items at this park, but actually it is a bit harder to find an array of vegetarian options here. For breakfast, I suggest the French Toast Sticks at TamuTamu in Africa. Pair it with some coffee or OJ and head-off to Kilimanjaro Safari to catch a glimpse of the animals on the savannah. For lunch, after riding Primeval Whirl, grab a Black Bean Burger and fries at Restarauntasaurus.

black-bean-veggie-burger

It is a hearty portion; not too spicy, and with all the fixings it is actually my favorite veggie burger on Disney property. For dinner, I always return to TamuTamu for the Vegetarian Curry with roasted vegetables and tofu served with Jasmine rice. This delicious, rich, and fragrant platter will make you feel like you are actually in North Africa. Looking for a snack? Try the Cinnamon-Glazed Pecans at the Dino-Diner; they are sweet, spicy, warm, and crunchy!

Hollywood Studios: Walk the streets of America, ride the movies, and brave the thrills after grabbing a Cranberry Orange Muffin and coffee at Starring Roles. The muffin is moist and bursts with flavor. This ain’t your average pre-packaged muffin. It is fresh-baked and BIG. For lunch, I always get the vegetable pizza combo at Pizza Planet.

veggie pizza at Pizza Planet

The pizza is yummy! It has mushrooms, peppers, onions, olives and tomatoes and comes with a side Caesar Salad. If it is nice outside and you want to avoid the chaos of the arcade, you can enjoy this lovely meal on the outdoor patio. Before you head to stake out a spot in line for Fantasmic, have the Grilled Vegetable Sandwich with zucchini, roasted mushrooms, roasted red pepper, vine-ripened tomato, provolone, and sun-dried tomato pesto on basil-asiago artisan bread (served with coleslaw, apple slices or fries) at Studio Catering Company.

grilled veggie sand

This sandwich is hearty, flavorful, and unique. I like to ask for a side of vinaigrette to dip mine in. They also have a homemade banana and toffee bar parfait that is to die for! If you want a snack though, try the orange-pineapple smoothie at KRNR just outside the Rock’n Rollercoaster; it is cool, creamy, fruity, and super delicious!

There you have it: three vegetarian square meals (and a snack) in each of the parks. Of course there are other options! What are some of your go-to vegetarian meals in the parks? What about the resorts? Tell us where YOU find vegetarian favorites at WDW!

Kirby Buckets coming to Disney XD!

Disney XD has ordered “Kirby Buckets,” a single-camera comedy series that mixes live-action and animation to bring a young aspiring animator’s imagination to life. The series, starring 13-year-old Jacob Bertrand (“Marvin Marvin,” “Bubble Guppies”), will begin production in Los Angeles in the spring for a fall 2014 premiere on Disney XD. The announcement was made today by Adam Bonnett, Executive Vice President, Original Programming, Disney Channel.

“We know that our Disney XD audience has a strong affinity for animated programming, so we are looking forward to presenting a live-action series told through the eyes of a boy that shares that same passion.” He added, “By pairing a unique visual style with captivating storytelling, we have created a series filled with fun, unexpected adventures and laugh-out-loud comedy.”

The series invites viewers into the wildly colorful imagination of 13-year-old Kirby Buckets, who dreams of becoming a famous animator like his idol Mac MacCallister. Kirby sees his drawings take shape as he and his best friends, Fish and Eli, go on outrageous and unpredictable adventures.

Also starring are Mekai Curtis (“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day”) and Cade Sutton (“The Neighbors”) as Kirby’s best friends Fish and Eli, Olivia Stuck (“Good Luck Charlie”) as Kirby’s sister Dawn and Tiffany Espensen (“Bucket and Skinner’s Epic Adventures”) as Dawn’s friend Belinda.

The series was created and written by Gabe Snyder & Mike Alber (“Supah Ninjas”) and directed by Walt Becker (“Wild Hogs”). Kristofor Brown (“Beavis and Butt-head”) serves as executive producer. “Kirby Buckets” is a production of Horizon Productions, Inc.

WDW Quick Tips: Pack Light And Skip The Checked Luggage

IMG 6826
IMG 6826

IMG_6826

I don’t know about you, but I personally hate checking luggage. I have never had luck with it – it gets lost or banged up or misplaced or ends up on the other side of the country – oh and can I mention how this is a service many of us are PAYING for now with baggage fees?…needless to say, I try to avoid it if at all possible. Since I live in upstate New York and driving to Walt Disney World would take 20 hours or more, I choose to fly and bring as little as possible. I have come up with some tips for Packing Light for Walt Disney World that I hope can help you too:

Wear the big stuff – I generally will try and wear the one pair of jeans, hoodie, and sneakers I am packing on the airplane, as it will definitely save precious suitcase space (especially if your husband wears size 13 sneakers like mine does…). I know you might be thinking “I’m heading to sunny warm FLORIDA, so why do I even need jeans and a hoodie?” Well, for one thing, chances are pretty good that the airport and plane will still be on the cool side, plus it can get cool early and late in the day, so having these items with you can definitely come in handy

Consult your Itinerary – specifically your ADR’s – Do some research on the places you will be going/eating at while at WDW – do any of them have a dress code? If not, then your sneakers/shorts/t-shirt will likely suffice, so you can probably leave the dress pants/shoes/dresses at home. Check out the Disney dining section right here on Chip and Co to learn more and to see if any of your meals will be fancy enough to warrant a dressy outfit

Check With Your Airline – Every airline has slightly different rules, but most allow one carry on plus a ‘personal item’. The carry on can usually be one of the smaller rolling suitcases, and a personal item is anything that can fit under the seat in front of you – I usually bring a big purse/tote bag, and my husband will bring a backpack

Make A List And Stick To It – Make a frugal packing list and while doing so ask yourself questions like “do I really need 8 t shirts for a 5 day trip?” (the answer is probably NO, unless you’re prone to spilling…) and remember that you can always use the laundry facilities at your Disney Resort should something happen. Once you have the list, make sure you stick to it, don’t go tossing extra shirts and pants into your bag – you’ll need that extra suitcase room for all the Disney souvenirs you will be buying (…or, the lack of space will keep you from buying too many souvenirs and spending too much money, either way)

It may seem crazy to think about not checking any luggage for a weeklong trip to Disney – but trust me, it’s possible, and if you follow these steps you just may be successful at it as well!

‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer to Debut on Jimmy Kimmel Tonight

Guardians of the Galaxy

With ‘Thor: The Dark World’ hitting blu-ray and DVD next week, and ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’ being released on April 4, 2014, Marvel Studios is shifting gears, and setting their sights to space. The marketing rollout is about to begin for Marvel’s newest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, starring Chris Pratt, Dave Batista, Zoe Saldana, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and  Vin Diesel,  as the rag tag group of heroes, out in deep space. Well, tonight, on ‘Jimmy Kimmel Live’, Marvel Studios will unveil the first trailer of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’, which will air on ABC at 11:35/10:35c.

After Jimmy Kimmel Live airs, the trailer will be posted for 24 hours exclusively on Jimmy Kimmel Live’s YouTube channel. You can also see a fifteen second sneak peak below. The film has a great ‘Star Wars’ feel and flow to it, as the trailer shows. This is my most anticipated film of the year, and I’m dying to see it.  For a little more on the characters, and the story, USA Today published an article that included this blurb:

The movie teams five disparate personalities: Peter Quill (Pratt), aka Star-Lord, was taken from Earth as a 9-year-old, possesses a mysterious orb artifact and pilots the Milano, a muscle car of a spaceship. Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is connected to Thanos, arguably the cosmos’ biggest baddie. Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) is a muscular dude you don’t want to upset. And then there are the aliens Rocket Raccoon and Groot (computer-generated characters voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively), who are best pals and potentially the biggest things to happen to pop culture since Chewbacca.

Their stories converge in the space prison Kyln. After the characters break out, they venture to Knowhere (the severed head of a celestial being that serves as a hangout for aliens) and visit the weird menagerie of the Collector (Benicio Del Toro). They also have to avoid two villains, Ronan (Lee Pace) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who are in hot pursuit of Quill’s orb, which has the power to destroy the galaxy.

Coming to Theaters and Stores in 2014 from Disney

Disney released some information about the upcoming blockbuster movies that are coming out for 2014 and the products that consumers will be able to purchase to go along with those movies at the Disney Consumer product New York Toy Fair Expo.  This was a closed presentation by invite only and Chip and Company was one of the few privileged attendees.

Along with three new movies Disney will also be releasing a new animated series on Disney XD this fall, Star Wars Rebels featuring the voice of Freddie Prince Jr. as Kanan.  This series will take over where Star Wars the Clone Wars took off.  The series will start out with an hour long premiere this fall before on The Disney Channel before becoming a regular series in the fall of 2014 on Disney XD.

rebels

The first movie we were given a glimpse of is the new Disney Planes Fire & Rescue.  Dane cook will be the voice of Dusty the crop plane.  This movie will appeal to adults as well as children with many grown up “zingers” thrown in that will have you chuckling.  Disney Planes Fire & Rescue will be out in July 2014 for the summer movie crunch.  I know I am looking forward to seeing it at theater with my children.

Next up was The Amazing Spider-man 2. After a short trailer we saw some action figures from the new movie and then a young boy who stars in the movie Jorge Vegas came out and sprayed the presenter with what looked like silly string from a new gun that will be sold on the market from the movie.  After that Andrew Garfield who plays Peter Parker came on stage with Jorge.  It appears as if they had a blast filming and get along great.  Jamie Fox will also play the villain named Electro.  The Amazing Spider-man 2 will be coming to theaters on May 2, 2014.

The final movie presented was Guardians of the Galaxy which is a Marvel Superheroes movie.  This is an entirely new Marvel Avengers concept and features a space saga complete with a mercenary raccoon that talks with the voice of Bradley Cooper.  The star will be Peter Quill played by Chris Pratt.  It is expected to hit theaters on August 1, 2014 and is going to take Marvel Avengers fans on a sci-fi fantasy trip while still being Super Heroes.  Think of it as Star Wars meets the Avengers.

Disney is surely stepping up its game of consumer products with all the bells and whistles all of these toys had.  Working lights, moving parts, nerf gun blasters, silly string gun blasters.  The action figures are more true to the characters then any I have seen before and some even have the actors voice saying phrases from the movies.  All in all though for the details the prices weren’t as bad as I expected.  Most of the action figures appeared to be $19.99 and the guns were reasonably priced also.  The Lego sets of course were on the pricier side most at $79.99 or above and some of the ships from Star Wars Rebels also were that expensive.

All in all it looks like Disney has some amazing things coming out for 2014;  Three great movies, a new animated Star Wars series and new toys.  Really, there is something for almost everyone.  I know my family and I will be looking forward to the movie releases and some of the products that will be out on the market.  It was great to get a sneak peak at everything.

2014 Matchup Announced for MEAC/SWAC Challenge

2014 MEAC
2014 MEAC

2014 MEAC

North Carolina A&T and Alabama A&M, two Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), will face off for the 10th anniversary MEAC/SWAC Challenge presented by Disney, an annual celebration of diversity, higher education and football. The 2014 event is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 31 and will air on an ESPN network.

Disney has sponsored the event for seven years as part of the company’s ongoing commitment to diversity, education and community. The football game features teams from the Mideastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) and the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC).

In the tradition of HBCU classics, the MEAC/SWAC Challenge is more than a football game. Four days of fan, alumni and student events culminate with the Sunday game and highlight the contributions HBCUs and their alumni make to education, athletics, the arts and communities across the United States.

“We are excited to be gearing up for the 10th anniversary of the MEAC/SWAC Challenge Presented by Disney,” said Nancy Gidusko, director of Community Relations for the Walt Disney World Resort. “For alumni and fans, the game and the inspiring and dynamic events leading up to it make the four-day weekend a spirited kickoff to football season.”

Since its inception, the challenge has showcased 13 different HBCU institutions.

“Our mission remains strong, which is to build on HBCU traditions while providing a stellar experience for the student-athletes and fans,” said Pete Derzis, senior vice president and general manager, ESPN Regional Television.
