Universal to Follow in Disney’s Footsteps and Raise Prices

Universal Globe

I am sure we knew this was coming. Isn’t this how it usually goes, one park raises prices and than they all follow. Now Universal Studios Florida has raised some of their ticket prices, just like Disney did not that long ago.

Here is what you can expect to spend:

  • A 1 day 1 park ticket went up to $96 plus tax.
  • A 1 day 2 park ticket went up to $136
  • 2 days 1 park each day will be $155.99
  • 2 days at both parks each day will be $195.99

So what do you think about this price increase? Will you stop going if park tickets hit the $100 mark? Let us know in the comment box below.

P.S. – When Diagon Alley opens this summer you will be able to ride The Hogwarts Express, which will take  guests between the 2 parks. Remember you have to have a ticket that offers park to park access in order to ride.

Pounds to Dollars: Money Advice for the UK Traveller

IMG 0055
IMG 0055

UK Dollar

Budgeting for your trip is one of the hardest things to do before you go. It’s difficult for any family but even more so for those of us living outside the US. For us Brits abroad, we’re dealing with a whole new currency, one that’s pretty much Alien to us.

It’s likely you’ll spend your entire holiday thinking ‘what’s that in Pounds‘, and getting yourself mightily confused in the process.

You do have the benefit of not having to pay for park tickets and transportation (assuming you are staying at a Disney hotel) after you arrive, but there’s a lot more to consider. You’ll need food; drink… and you absolutely must get yourself a pair of ears.

The only real way to be sure is by trial and error. Whether it’s your first trip or your fifth, you’re not going to be sure exactly how much money you should take. And if you’re working to a budget, it’s important to wring every dollar out of your Pounds that you possibly can.

  • Do not wait until you get to the airport before changing your Pounds into Dollars.

The money shops at the airports offer a much, much lower exchange rate. Shop around the high street, check the post office and check online. Your local bank may even offer the service. It’s important to get the best possible deal on your money, because even stretching it a tiny bit further can make a big difference in the States.

It’s probably better to take more dollars than you think you will need. Remember, if you come back with unwanted dollars you can always trade it back at most currency shops. They normally have a separate rate for this, and you may lose a few quid. But it’s much safer than running out of cash abroad. Some agencies even offer ‘exchange insurance’, meaning you get back exactly what it cost in the first place.

  • Paper, not plastic.

Remember if you’re using your Debit card abroad, your bank will normally charge you something for the currency conversion. Some banks will charge around £1 per transaction, others much more. It’s important that you check on your banks terms and conditions before using your card abroad. And if you absolutely have to use it, try and make larger purchases. Those charges will really pile up if you’re using it here, there and everywhere.

Credit cards are normally safer – but remember to inform your credit card company before you travel. If you’re out of cash, the last thing you need is them cancelling your card. They’re only trying to protect you, and if you don’t let them know you’ve only yourself to blame.

NEVER buy your dollars with a credit card. Most Credit Card Companies view this as ‘borrowing money’ – and you’ll face the same hefty charges as you would using your credit card at an ATM.

Many currency conversion shops also sell plastic money cards, to be used like credit cards abroad. BEWARE! These normally have an expiry date – if you’re using them, make sure to use up all your dollars! They won’t be there next time you head to the USA.

  • You have to pay TAX.

One of the things you will most likely forget during your trip is that the price on the sticker is not the price you will pay. The tax is not included on the label, so you have to remember that when budgeting. It’s like shopping at a Cash & Carry… except it’s everywhere.

Those are just a few of the things you have to remember about taking your money abroad. There’s a lot more to talk about, but that’s a tip for another day.

Dapper Day at Walt Disney World: What is it All About?

DAPPERDAY
DAPPERDAY

DAPPERDAY

Hopefully you have heard by now that Dapper Day is coming to the Magic Kingdom, in Walt Disney World this Sunday March 9th.  We posted the full schedule of events HERE . It’s not too late to get your discounted print-at-home tickets, and they start at $59. You can get them HERE but hurry! Deadline for these is BEFORE Friday March 7th ! While we are on the subject, what is Dapper Day really all about, what should you wear, and what’s it really like to go? Word is getting out and it’s actually much easier to find the answers to these questions then it was in years passed.

The best description of the event comes from the organizers themselves. They will tell you that Dapper Day events at Disney parks celebrate the tradition of stepping out in style, and were partly inspired by the original Disney park designer’s illustrations which often featured sharply dressed guests enjoying the park. The gatherings are neither a strict period recreation of the past nor a costume event (there are many other gatherings for that). Dapper Day Events are meant to showcase you at your best, and all sophisticated fashions from vintage-inspired classics to chic contemporary looks are welcome. Active and retired military are encouraged to wear your dress blues if you like. During Dapper Day Events at Disney Parks, you bring those Imagineer’s illustrations to life when you become those well dressed guests the designers imagined (or hoped) would be filling the park. First-timers will experience a day in the park unlike any you’ve ever had! If you’d like to go deeper into this

dapper

explanation you can check out more details HERE.  Knowing what to wear is pretty simple, actually. You can find inspiration from both amateur and professional videos that have been made from previous events! I will be there in person at the March 9th event and I plan on getting lots more video and photos for Chip & Co. – so stay tuned! Remember you can always accessorize with buttons, bags and more that are now being produced!

Dapper Day Tip! Due to the Magic Kingdom staying open until 1am on March 9th you can easily take a break with a cocktail at a nearby resort and head back to the park later. Resort guests will have park access until 2am! Happy Dapper Day!

“Disney – Party Of Two!” – Why Disney World Is Perfect For Pairs

PartyOfTwo
PartyOfTwo

PartyOfTwo

Nothing beats a family vacation to Walt Disney World – getting to watch your loved ones experience all that Disney has to offer is truly a magical experience. Sometimes though, it’s nice to travel in a slightly smaller group – in fact a group of two is my preferred way to visit Walt Disney World. What are the advantages to traveling in a twosome to WDW? Why, I’m so glad you asked!

Value Rooms – Because How Much Space Do Two People Need? I personally stay exclusively at WDW’s Value Resorts – because as a party of two, we don’t need a ton of room, and as the name “Value” suggests, we are able to save a ton of money by using these amazingly priced Resorts on our Disney vacations. Most of these rooms will sleep up to 4 or 5, but that can get kind of crowded – and if you want more space, you gotta be ready to pay more money. Lucky for us – two people in a small(ish) room works just fine!

Fact – Two People Take Up Less Space – It’s true, and something I am very grateful for – especially when it comes to things like bus/boat/monorail transportation – we have often been able to squeeze into an almost full bus/monorail car which means we don’t have to wait for the next one to come (a godsend during peak times!). This actually brings me to my next Party of Two Perk – Line cutting!

The Occasional Line Cutting Is Glorious – Have you ever been in line for a WDW ride, and the Cast Member yells “any parties of two?” and some lucky couple comes running up and cuts in front of your party of 7 and jumps on the next car? Yeah, we’re those people. It doesn’t happen a lot, but I would say at least once a day while touring the Parks we are able to make use of the fact that there’s only two of us and get on a ride a little bit quicker, which means we are able to squeeze more into our days at Disney!

Food With A View – Most Sit down restaurants at WDW have a limited number of tables for 2, but often times those tables are in a prime location, which means you can enjoy delicious food while gazing out onto some great Disney scenery! Cinderella’s Royal Table, Boma, and ‘Ohana are all places where we have gotten to sit at small tables in a great spot allowing us a great view of our surroundings

Gives The Term “Quick” Service Dining A New Meaning – Let’s face it, trying to grab food at peak mealtime at the Disney Parks with your family can be quite the hassle, between figuring out what you want to eat, finding (aka stalking down) a table, and getting condiments napkins ketchup more napkins for the spilled ketchup etc…factor in low blood sugars and temper tantrums and you’re just asking for trouble. Traveling in a couple makes this easier – simply divide and conquer – choose the meals, one person waits/orders/pays while the other finds a table, and then goes for condiments when the food arrives. Easy and relatively painless – not to mention that with fewer people, your time wasted obtaining and eating food will be significantly decreased, allowing you a more speedy return to WDW’s rides and shows (although, might I suggest you skip the Tea Cups after you just inhaled that burger and fries? Trust me – that is a bad combo!)

Fewer People To Please – The more people you travel with, the more opinions you’re dealing with, which ultimately means you may have to compromise more and miss out on some things you might really want to do to appease others in your party. Obviously all life is about compromise, but sometimes you just want to go on that one ride, and the fewer people you have to contend with, the more likely you’re going to get the most out of your time at Disney

Extra Towels For The Pool. Seriously. – This may seem unimportant to some, but to me it matters – I like having extra towels in case I want to go to the pool or shower again after a long day at the Parks (which may have something to do with the fact that I am an only child and don’t like to share – but that isn’t the point, right?)

All of these reasons and more are why I love traveling strictly in a twosome to WDW – but I would love to know YOUR thoughts – have you traveled in a party of 2 to Disney? Do you love it, or do you prefer a larger group to share in the fun?

Disney’s Frozen Makes 1 Billion Worldwide

On the same day it won two Academy Awards, “Frozen,” crossed $1 billion at the worldwide box office. The biggest non-sequel animated film ever released and the second biggest animated film of all time globally, “Frozen” has earned an estimated $388.8 million at the domestic box office and $611.5 million internationally for a global total of $1,000.3 million. It is The Walt Disney Studios’ seventh release to reach the $1 billion mark, joining “Marvel’s The Avengers” and “Iron Man 3,” Disney’s second and fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” films, Disney•Pixar’s “Toy Story 3,” and Disney’s “Alice in Wonderland.”

“With ‘Frozen,’ we knew we had something truly special on our hands, and it has connected with fans and film-goers around the world in a way we only dreamed was possible,” said Alan Horn, Chairman, The Walt Disney Studios. “Animation is the cornerstone of our company, and thanks to the vision, dedication, and talent of our tremendous cast and filmmaking team, Disney Animation has come roaring back with a new classic for fans of all ages.”

“Frozen” is the winner of two Academy Awards, for Best Animated Feature and Original Song (“Let It Go”). This the first animated feature Oscar win for Walt Disney Animation Studios in the category’s 13-year history. The film has also won Golden Globe, BAFTA, Critics’ Choice, and Producers Guild of America awards for best animated film, five Annie Awards, and four Visual Effects Society Awards, among many other honors.

“Frozen” has stayed in the top 10 films at the domestic box office for all 14 weeks of its wide release, the longest run by any movie in four years.

Internationally, “Frozen” is the biggest animated film released by The Walt Disney Studios in more than 25 territories. In Korea, “Frozen” was #1 for the first five weeks of release and is now the biggest animated film, the second biggest non-local film, and Disney’s biggest release of all time. It’s also the highest-grossing animated film of all time in Denmark and Venezuela, and the biggest non-sequel animated film in the U.K./Ireland. “Frozen” debuts in one remaining international territory, Japan, on March 14.

The“Frozen” soundtrack, featuring songs by Tony Award winner Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez and a score by Christophe Beck, returned to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart last week for a 5th time, the first soundtrack to do so since 1998. It also hit #1 on iTunes’ Overall Album Chart in 31 countries including the U.S. The Oscar-winning song “Let It Go,” performed by Tony Award winner Idina Menzel, who voices Elsa in the film, is also certified Platinum and last week reached #18 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.

Don’t forget “Frozen” can be yours on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD & On Demand on March 18.
