Behind the Scenes of the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival

Miss Piggy Topiary

Miss Piggy Topiary

I am sure you can tell by the beautiful topiaries that a lot of work goes into the Epcot Flower & Garden festival. Here is some behind the scenes info on the magic behind the beauty.

It take a team of 400 gardeners, horticulturists and landscape architects about a year to perfect these beautiful topiaries. There are whopping 500,000 plants, trees and shrubs involved.

Nearly all of the 100 topiaries starts with a wire frame. They using 25 different plants including fichus, palm fiber and multi-colored mosses. Each topiary is trimmed with precision at least once a week throughout the festival to maintain its shape.

“Topiaries are always one the most anticipated elements of the festival,” said Eric Darden, the horticulture manager who oversees the Epcot event. “Everyone involved with the festival understands the important role of topiaries and takes great pride in making sure they closely resemble our beloved characters.”

Did you know that there are nearly 30 million blooms throughout the park during the Flower & Garden Festival? They include:

  • 700 container gardens of flowers, herbs, plants and vegetables,
  • 225 floating mini-gardens and
  • approximately 70,000 bedding plants in Future World alone.

Wishing you Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust

Yamaha Entertainment Group is celebrating Disney’s new “Muppets Most Wanted” film. They are giving away a trip for 4 to New York City, my favorite city.

1 grand-prize winner and 3 guests will have the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the Big Apple among the bright lights of Broadway, which is a very fitting nod to the world-famous Muppets and their history of memorable stage performances.  Runner-up prizes include an autographed poster and Muppets Most Wanted soundtrack, and assorted movie merchandise.

In theaters nationwide, Disney’s “Muppets Most Wanted,” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour where they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper. A tribute to the new movie and the Muppets’ global domination, a one-of-a-kind, green Muppets-inspired Yamaha DC3XE3PRO piano was created and is featured alongside “Muppets Most Wanted” cameo star and Yamaha artist Josh Groban on the Winter 2014 edition of Yamaha’s All Access magazine.

“We’ve worked with Disney and the Muppets for many years,” said Chris Gero, founder and vice president of Yamaha Entertainment Group. “We feel privileged to have played a part in the excitement surrounding the last Muppets film, and now, ‘Muppets Most Wanted.’”

Vegetarian and Vegan Food Options at Disneyland Resort

paradise garden grill 00
paradise garden grill 00

Amusement park food options for vegetarians typically consist of cheese pizza and French fries. If you’re lucky, perhaps there is a bowl of iceberg lettuce with a glob of ranch that could be purchased. For vegans, your choices are usually even more abysmal. Over the years, Disneyland Resort has done well to expand its healthier options and provide a greater selection for vegans and vegetarians. In fact, there are many options that would satisfy even the most carnivorous of your party.

Disneyland

Carnation Café: Disneyland’s renowned restaurant on Main Street has updated its menu in recent months, and there are some great veggie options. Vegetarians, make sure you stop in for breakfast. Carnation Café offers apple-granola pancakes and huevos rancheros (corn tortilla, poached eggs, jack cheese and fire-roasted salsa with avocado-black bean pico de gallo). For Vegans, Carnation Café offers the Chef’s Vegan Burger for dinner and lunch.

huevos rancheros at Carnation Cafe
huevos rancheros at Carnation Cafe

Café Orleans: By chance, my favorite meal in all of Disneyland happens to be vegetarian, and it’s found at Café Orleans: the three-cheese Monte Cristo. I’m not even a vegetarian, but I could eat this meal every day of each of our Disneyland vacations if the rest of my family were to let me. Make it even better by ordering it with the pommes frites. For vegans, try the vegetable ragout, but hold the cheese. They also have the Crescent City Salad that is still great even without the meat and cheese.

Three-cheese Monte Cristo
Three-cheese Monte Cristo

Blue Bayou: This classic Disneyland restaurant offers both ambience and healthy selections. Veggies and Vegans alike can enjoy the Portobello mushroom and couscous maque choux while watching the boats of Pirates of the Caribbean go by. As always, make a reservation, get there about 15 minutes early, and ask for a waterside table when you check in.

Honorable Mentions: Soups are the specialty at Harbour Galley, and they typically always have a vegetarian option. I personally love grabbing a broccoli cheese soup bread bowl for dinner and then camp out a spot on Rivers of America for Fantasmic while my husband takes our girls on a few rides to keep them occupied. Also, Royal Street Veranda offers a vegan option with their gumbo in a bread bowl.

Disney California Adventure

Paradise Garden Grill: Veggies and Vegans should head straight over to Paradise Pier next to Goofy’s Sky School for this quick service option. The best choice on the menu is the tofu skewer with Moroccan chili sauce, chimichurri (Vegan), or tzatziki. If you’re hungry, try all three!

paradise-garden-grill-00

Carthay Circle: Arguably the best restaurant inside DCA, the recently added Carthay Circle has plenty of vegetarian and vegan options. For vegetarians, they offer a grilled eggplant sandwich with sautéed artichokes, tomatoes, garlic, and melted reserve cheeses on rustic country bread. Another popular choice is the squash ravioli. Vegans often enjoy the vegan pasta or vegan tower featuring seasonal produce that is customized for each guest!

Award Wieners: This popular quick service restaurant offers a vegetarian Portobello mushroom Philly. Kids love the assortment of hot dogs available here, and with this delicious option, you won’t have to make another stop to get yourself something to eat.

Downtown Disney

Naples Ristorante e Pizzeria/ Napolini: This Downtown Disney table service restaurant and its sister quick service counter offer well known Italian vegetarian favorites just as pizza, pasta, and eggplant dishes.

The Grand Californian

Napa Rose: Upon first glance at the menu, a lot of vegans and vegetarians discount this restaurant for its lack of options. However, you would be doing yourself an immense disservice if you did the same. Napa Rose is widely touted as one of the best restaurant in all of southern California. You know a restaurant in California would never get such a reputation if it didn’t have delicious healthy options. If you don’t like the vegan or vegetarian options on the menu, speak up! Ask your server if there are any other vegetarian/vegan selections. They will ask you what you have in mind or what you would like. After that, the chef or restaurant manager will come out and specially make you something!

What is your favorite vegetarian dish at Disneyland Resort? Did I leave out your favorite? Let me know! Remember, when you book your vacation with Destinations in Florida, your dining reservations can be made by your travel agent!

Try Some Different Dining On Your Next Disney Trip!

Beer flight

So we are a few months into the New Year, and I was thinking about the Disney New Year’s Resolutions I made – and one of them was to try new things – and one area which I especially wanted to broaden my horizons was in Disney Dining – I have never disliked anything I have eaten at Disney, but I realized that there is PLENTY out there that I haven’t even tried yet! So if you’re like me, maybe you will want to think about branching out when it comes to Dining at Disney. Not sure how?

Try these tips:

Venture To New Locations: I definitely think it’s worth it to go “off the beaten path” when it comes to Disney Dining – heading to a Resort that might take some time to get to, or making a reservation at a Downtown Disney restaurant that you haven’t tried – these might really be worth your while! There really are some amazing restaurant options at the WDW Resort Hotels – like ‘Ohana (which I tried in December and absolutely LOVED) which is located just a monorail ride away from the Magic Kingdom at Disney’s Polynesian Resort. Or you could take a boat from Epcot over to Disney’s Boardwalk Resort where you’ll find delicious Greek inspired dishes at Kouzzina and beers brewed on site at Big River Grille and Brewing Works. Or you could head on over to Downtown Disney- which is known primarily for its shopping, but they also offer tons of delicious cuisine – like a twist on classic American dishes at Wolfgang Puck, or authentic Irish dishes (and dancing and music!) at Raglan Road Irish Pub

Try Exotic Cuisine: “Theme Park Food” gets a bad reputation – a lot of it is frozen burgers/chicken/fried foods that don’t taste particularly good – but lucky for us – Disney has worked VERY hard to break out of that mold and offer fresh, quality food to its guests. You can certainly get hamburgers/chicken fingers/fried foods here, but if you’re willing to broaden your horizons a bit, you will discover they have a LOT more to offer than the standard Theme Park fare. Restaurant Marrakesh over in Epcot’s World Showcase offers traditional Moroccan fare – like beef, lamb, and chicken kebabs as well as Moroccan beer and specialty cocktails. A family favorite of ours is Boma – an African inspired buffet over at Animal Kingdom Lodge that offers mouth-watering salads, roasted meats, and a selection of delicious house made hummus. Epcot offers tons of different restaurants themed after their “World Showcase” countries – so if you want something new to please your palate, take a stroll through the countries and see what looks good! Oh, and FYI – most places that specialize in “exotic” can also make you sometime more plain or American if you request it, just in case your stomach isn’t ready for an adventure when you arrive at the restaurant!

Dress Up For Dinner: Most Disney restaurants don’t require that you dress up, but a few do have a dress code, and sometimes its nice to get dressed up and go to a nice restaurant – makes it feel like a real vacation celebration doesn’t it? So put on your best polo and khakis or summer dress and head over to The Yacht Club Resort where you can enjoy a delicious steak dinner at Yachtsman Steakhouse, or enjoy some delicious seafood at Narcoossee’s at the Grand Floridian Resort, or enjoy signature African cuisine while the animals roam around outside the restaurant on the savannah at Jiko at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. Looking for something really fancy? Victoria and Albert’s is the spot for you – with their multiple prix fixe menus, fresh ingredients, wine pairings, and plenty of new dishes to try, it’s a great place to celebrate and enjoy a delicious meal! Something to note – men will be required to wear a jacket and pants here, and women are encouraged to wear cocktail/nice dresses, and flip flops and shorts are not allowed

Don’t Overlook Your Resort Dining: Many WDW vacationers don’t spend a ton of time at their WDW Resort – as they are busy checking out the Parks and exploring all that WDW has to offer – which is all well and good, but sometimes grabbing food at the Parks is neither quick nor easy, and the truth is you may be better off heading back to your own Resort where you can relax, take it slow, and grab some amazing food. Many times I find the food at my Resort’s Counter Service dining spot is better than a lot of Counter Service options at the Parks, and generally it isn’t as crowded and there are almost always places to sit – sounds like paradise right?

Ok – so now you have some ideas about what you might be able to change when it comes to your Disney Dining routine, and hopefully you will be able to put those ideas into action next time you visit WDW!

Disney World resort guests still have a slight advantage over non-resort guests because they get to make their Fastpass+ reservations 60 days out.

If you need help linking your tickets or making Fastpass+ reservation remember Disneyworld.com has a chat feature and they are usually pretty helpful.
