Is Pirates of the Caribbean 5 filming in Australia on the horizon?

Pirates of the Caribbean 5 may be filmed in Australia!  The Australian government has agreed to Walt Disney Studios request to spend the $21.6 million of government money originally approved for the now abandoned production of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and use it towards the filming of the next Pirates movie.    Although the government is more than happy to agree to Disney’s request, there is no guarantee the film will be made in Australia.   Disney is also considering Mexico as a film location.

Filming in Australia would be ideal financially as rumors state the subsidy from federal monies would be higher than at other locations.  This along with other perks indicate Australia could be a strong contender.

The monies originally approved in 2013 by then Labor Arts Minister, Tony Burke would provide an increase in continuity of employment and skills development within the sector.  Along with the fact that film and video production and distribution had a gross value-added multiplier of 1.8, meaning for each dollar spent $1.8 was generated across all industries indicated it would make financial sense to honor the agreement.

When the Australian government committed $21.6 million it was in the hopes of attracting the high-profile adaptation of Jules Verne’s 1870 novel 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea  Starring Brad Pitt, and under the direction of David Fincher, the movie was sure to be a big hit.  With 20,000 leagues on the back burner, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 is the natural successor to use the monies already approved and win the bid for Disney to film in the beautiful Australian locations.

I can’t wait for the next POTC movie.  Where do you think Disney should film POTC 5 – Mexico or Australia?

25th Anniversary Screening of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” and Look A Like Contest!

20140906 114456

20140906_114456

The 25th Anniversary Screening of “The Little Mermaid” and Ariel red carpet event was held in Burbank last weekend as part of the Burbank International Film Festival.  Jeff Rector, Director of the Burbank International Film Festival shared “We are extremely honored and excited to be screening this timeless Disney classic that most children have never before seen on the big screen in a theatrical environment.”

As part of the promotion for the screening, an Ariel look-a-like contest was held with the winners announced before the screening began.   Contestants – from little ones to the more mature Ariels from all over the world submitted their photos.  The winners, one adult and one child were announced before the beginning of the movie – with bragging rights going to Mariel Martin, from Tijuana, Mexico (adult) and young Skyler  (child) from Orange County, California.

Mariel Martin (dressed as Mermaid Ariel) shared that she, along with her sister, Yolani (dressed as Vanessa – human Ursula), have been dressing up as Ariel and other Disney princesses since a very young age.  Thanks to family members that were make up artists and models, dressing up was the norm around their house.

Winner and ten year old, Skyler is a veteran at dressing up and attending events.  She was excited to win and happy to be able to watch “The Little Mermaid” on the big screen.

Marissa Leon was spot on dressed as the purple, Ursula. Marissa who follows, Chip and Co, has a website as well called “petite leon” with her Disney costumes available for rent or sale.

And cute little, Miley Romero was Ariel’s daughter, Melody.  There were several other Ariels and a little Prince Eric to round out the group of look-a-likes.

As part of the entertainment, The Burbank International Film Festival, brought in their very own, Ariel look a like, Traci Hines and her Prince Eric, Leo Camacho.  Traci an up and coming pop star, has been performing for kids and adults since 2008.  She has done original characters for modeling gigs and party and convention appearances. and even has her own line of clothing called “Adorkable Apparel” (available online)

Click here for a video presentation of Traci Hines and Leo Camacho.

Leo Camacho, talked about how he met and started out as Prince Eric for Traci’s video and things just took off from there.  Now he regularly appears with Traci in events.  He enjoys dressing up as Prince Eric and for my grand daughters and I, he was a true prince.

Watching “The Little Mermaid”, Disney’s story of Ariel who falls in love with Prince Eric and dreams about living life on land, was a great experience.  It brought back all the excitement and energy the movie has to offer and allowed my grand daughters and the other little ones in the audience, to see Ursula, Ariel and all the other lovable characters in all their glory on the big screen.

Looking back at Disneyland – from opening day to their 59th birthday

disneyland 59th anniversary 1
disneyland 59th anniversary 1

opening-day-disneyland

Disneyland’s grand opening on July 17, 1955 was definitely less than perfect.  My mother in law was there (her uncle was a contractor who helped build the park) and told me that the asphalt was still wet in places due to the fact that they had poured it that morning and with temperatures hitting 101º it didn’t have time to set for the park opening at 4:30 in the afternoon. Also, many water fountains were not functioning because of a plumber’s strike.  More people showed up than anticipated. Only 6,000 guests were invited for the preview opening but an additional 22,000 showed up with counterfeit tickets which led to a chaotic day.  None the less, it was magical and it marked a turning point in entertainment and theme parks as we know it.  Disneyland opened with 18 attractions, compared with the 62 that exist today.  Walt said at the time that Disneyland would never be completed, and 59 years later, that is still true.

disneyland-59th-anniversary-1

This year on July 17th, Disneyland celebrated it’s 59th Birthday.  While there was a small show at the Train Station to commemorate the day, the real focus was the HUGE celebration planned for July 17, 2015 – Disneyland’s 60th Birthday!  A gorgeous “diamond” logo was revealed and there are grand plans over the next 12 months for what will surely be a day to remember!

Check out this video that was filmed for the Disneyland 59th celebration.

I already have my hotel room booked for the 60th birthday celebration and cannot wait!  I know that I am looking forward to new merchandise (come on Dooney & Bourke, we need a Disneyland 60th print!), entertainment and some one of a kind offerings.

Were you at Disneyland for their 59th birthday?  Will you be there for their 60th birthday?  If so, I will see you there!

Stuff I have to buy on every Disney trip…

shop
shop

Shopping at Disney
I love shopping at Disney. I mean, I really love shopping at Disney. Picture it… my husband and sons rolling their eyes as I beg to go into EVERY store on property while explaining to them that the merchandise is NOT the same in every shop. That argument usually loses, so I tend to sneak away to shop while they aren’t looking or send them to the pool at our resort so I can browse the resort gift shops. Over the course of our trips, I manage to see a lot of the shops, even if I don’t get the hours and hours that I would like to spend shopping. While I love to see what’s new, there are a few items that I just have to buy on every Disney trip!

Here are my favorites:

1. Magic Band Accessories – Magic Bandits and MagicSliders are a new addition to the “must buy” list. We blinged out (is that an actual expression?) our Magic Bands as soon as we arrived at Disney World last fall. If I’m wearing that band for a week, I’m going to make it special!

2. Chip and Dale Pretzels – Have you tried the Chip and Dale pretzels? They LOOK like Mickey Mouse and they are crazy addicting. I love them so much that the big boss (Chip) sends me bags when he visits Disney. I seriously bring an extra bag for a carry on so that I can bring pretzels home.

3. Autograph Books – Who doesn’t love getting autographs from your favorite Disney character? I always get the kids new autograph books as soon as we arrive (or I sometimes buy them before our trip) so that we are ready to go at the first Goofy sighting. We always ask for characters to sign on one side of the books so that we can add a photo of them with the kids on the other side of the page.

autograph-books

4. Postcards – Everyone loves getting a fun postcard in the mail, so before we head to Disney I make up mailing labels (I know, I know. It’s a big nuts, but it saves time there) for folks we want to send postcards to from Disney. I make sure to buy them the first night so they can be written and mailed right away. We always send them to our children’s classes as school. The kids love them!

5. Gifts – Back to my husband… his favorite saying at Disney goes something like this: “We’re on vacation. We’re not here to buy something for everyone we know.” Yeah, yeah, yeah. I know that, but I also love buying fun Mickey jewelry for my nieces, kitchen stuff for the Grandparents and anything Cars related for my nephew. (Remember? I LOVE shopping at Disney!)

6. Something “girly” – Last year I went crazy the new Vera Bradley bags. (I mean, it’s Mickey Mouse on a Vera Bradley bag! C’mon!) The next trip I went nuts for the new Alex and Ani bracelets and scoured the parks until I found the bracelets I wanted. This year I’m thinking of a few Alex and Ani bracelets in gold. I have to calm my breathing a bit now since I’m so excited to see them in person. Seriously, how do my husband and kids NOT get excited about this?? Now that I think about, this one should be much higher on my list.

alex

7. Vinylmation – We have been collecting these adorable figurines for a few years now. The kids each choose a new Vinylmation while we are at Disney and we line them up at home in the order they were collected as a daily reminder of our fun Disney trips. We have a nice Star Wars collection and my guess is that Indiana Jones will be joining the crew this year. I also grab a few extras for holiday gifts for the kids and for my coworkers who politely agree with me that they are just adorable.

vinyl

8. Dated souvenirs – Whether it’s a keychain or a snowglobe, we love to get a small items with the year as a memory from the trip. We got the boys great Mickey figures their first trip with the dates on the character shirts.

As you can see, many of these items can be purchased directly through the Disney Store’s website. But, I think there is something more fun about buying authentic Disney Parks merchandise while in the Disney Parks. For me the Disney Store is like a pregame training program to help prep me for my Disney shopping.

What is your favorite souvenir to buy in the parks?

Happy Shopping!

Who wouldn’t want to own a piece of Disney History? How about living in a home where Walt Disney himself entertained friends, family, and esteemed guests, including the fabulous Lucille Ball?

In the 1950s and 60s the Disney family owned a secluded home in the California Palm desert, that hosted parties with high profile Hollywood A-listers. Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were among some of the Hollywood elite that hung out in the laid back desert atmosphere of Disney’s Palm Springs home.

Walt loved the Palm Springs desert and was a major contributor to Smoke Tree Ranch, an upscale enclave of homes surrounded by rustic charm and ocotillo plants. Walt bought his first Palm Springs home in 1948, but sold it in 1954 to help fund what many of his fellow desert dwellers said would be a colossal flop: Disneyland. However Disney never gave up his dream, and eventually was able to purchase another home in Palm Springs, which he even offered a sign up sheet at the studios, for people wanting to use it when the Disney family was not. This area of the Californian desert is steeped in Disney history, he even lent the talent of his studio set designers for many Smoke Tree Ranch guest cabin designs. You won’t see Mickey Mouse parading around the town, but many of these guest homes are listed as “Disney Cottages”.

Many stars used Smoke Tree Ranch as a get away from the hustle of celebrity life, but Walt was a contributing part of this casual secluded community. This beautiful 1 bedroom home overlooking the Coachella Valley may have a glamorous past, but it’s also a less talked about walk in Walt’s footsteps. Available for $535,000, it is 1,600 square feet and sits on 2.79 acres of land, you can view the listing over on Bankrate.com.

FROZEN expansion and character eliminations at Goofy’s Kitchen coming to Disneyland?

Psssst…..Hey it’s Anonymouse here with some Disneyland gossip!  Shhhh don’t tell anyone, but I hear that there are some major chilly changes coming to Disneyland this fall!

Rumor has it that to accommodate the demand for Anna and Elsa, the sisters are taking over a section of Hollywood Land in Disney California Adventure.  A meet and greet will be set up at or around Stage 17 (near Monsters Inc.) and the Muppet 3D Theater will be turned into a FROZEN sing a long!  It’s possible that an ice skating rink will be set up in the area and FROZEN themed merchandise and food carts will also be new fixtures in the area.   I am not sure if the current meet and greet in Fantasyland (next to Pinnochio’s Village Haus Restaurant) is moving OR if they are just adding a second one in DCA.  Recent changes to the current meet and greet have discontinued the stand-by wait and fast passes are now given by castmembers in the morning until they have been depleted for the day.  There have been a few bumps but I hear that it’s going more smoothly as time goes on and the days of 4+ hour stand by wait times are a thing of the past, which is definitely a positive!

Anonymouse and company are not quite sure how we feel about these changes, but we know that FROZEN is still in high demand and a HUGE money maker for Disney, so we do see the appeal of more access to character meet and greets with the sisters, as well as additional attractions that focus on the movie.

Now for a  sad rumor that I hope is NOT true!  I hear that the end of September is bringing the elimination of “face” characters to Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel.  The characters that will remain are of the “furry” variety.  This makes us sad because we all love to interact with different characters during these types of dining experiences, don’t we?  I sure do!

What do you think of the possible changes at Disneyland?  Leave your comments below!

All Aboard: A Celebration of Walt’s Trains!

The Walt Disney Family Museum is pleased to present All Aboard: A Celebration of Walt’s Trains, for your viewing pleasure beginning November 13, 2014 through February 9, 2015.

This incredible exhibit gives a glimpse into the influence railroading had on Walt Disney’s life and work.  It will also show visitors how his love of and legacy continues in Disney films and parks.  With more than 200 artifacts, firsthand accounts, archival videos, images of Walt and his trains, and actual model trains running throughout the show, All Aboard will share how Walt’s passion for trains developed long before manifesting itself in Disney short cartoons, feature films, and in Walt’s personal life at home.

Walt’s father and uncle (Mike) worked on the railroads which started Walt’s fascination. One of Walt’s earliest jobs was as a news butcher, selling magazines and snacks on the Missouri Pacific, Kansas City Southern, and the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroads. Walt said: “My railroad career was brief, exciting, and unprofitable.”  Little did he know then that his later years would include railroads in his profitable ventures.

Two crucial train rides affected Walt’s life significantly.  During a cross-country rail trip to New York in early 1928, Walt lost his cartoon star Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, and half of his animation staff to his film distributor. On the return train to California, Walt contemplated a new character—a mouse, which he named Mortimer. His wife Lillian had a different idea, and, with their collaboration on a name, Mickey Mouse was born.

Disney films would host special appearances of trains with the first short in 1929 titled,  Mickey’s Choo-Choo. Trains would also make appearances in future Disney shorts and films, either as plot devices or as characters of their own—with The Brave Engineer (1950) and Casey Jr. from the 1941 classic Dumbo. In the move to live-action films, it was inevitable that the Studios began featuring more trains, including the ones seen in So Dear to My Heart and The Great Locomotive Chase. Walt also fulfilled a long-time desire: he bought and built a tabletop model train layout in his office and enjoyed showing it off to visitors, including some of his own animators who were train buffs themselves.

The exhibit also includes some of Walt’s friends and staff, including two of Walt’s “Nine Old Men,” animators Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston.  Kimball was the first person to be a private owner of a full-sized steam locomotive.  Johnston’s hobby re-ignited when he saw the miniature train set in Walt’s office.  Also showcased are WED Enterprises’ Imagineers – “Imagination Engineers” – Roger Broggie and Bob Gurr, whose creative locomotives helped Walt transport his guests throughout Disneyland, and later, the Magic Kingdom Park in the Walt Disney World Resort.

And finally, “All Aboard” will show us how Walt’s railroad legacy continues today. Disney theme parks and films continue to honor trains and railroading, in their past, recent and yet to be seen future endevours.

Guest curator Michael Campbell, president of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society, constructed the exhibition to reflect Walt’s railroad journey as told through multiple chapters: Lighting the Fire, Building Steam, Gaining Speed, Full Throttle, Switching Tracks, Branching Out, A Grand Circle Tour Around The World, and Coming Full Circle. The exhibition’s conclusion reminds us that, even over a century later, Walt’s railroading influence remains as a vibrant and relevant force.  Campbell’s love of steam railroading began on a childhood trip to Disneyland. As the President of the Carolwood Pacific Historical Society and a Board Member Emeritus of the Carolwood Foundation, the non-profit organization that maintains and operates Walt Disney’s Barn in Griffith Park, Campbell is full immersed in the world of Disney and locomotives.   Campbell has presented talks about Walt and railroading to many groups throughout the years, including Disneyland Resort, Walt Disney World Resort, Pixar Animation Studios, and various schools, charities and railroad organizations. He was recently named Project Director for the Carolwood Foundation’s project to acquire, restore, and preserve the Wells Fargo Combine: Walt’s favorite car from his Santa Fe and Disneyland Railroad passenger train.

All Aboard: A Celebration of Walt’s Trains is produced by The Walt Disney Family Museum and is made possible, in part, with support from Lionel, LLC.
