Attending the Big Hero 6 Press Event in Burbank

I am so excited that I was able to cover the Big Hero 6 press event for Chip and Co. Disney was nice enough to invite me to this wonderful event that I am so excited to share with you. Check it out:

I had the extreme pleasure last week to attend an advanced screening and press event for Disney’s newest animated movie (and I predict HUGE blockbuster), Big Hero 6, at the Walt Disney Animation Studios in Burbank.  Thursday, October 17 was the press event which included meeting and chatting with cast and crew.

Big Hero 6 is a Marvel collaboration based on a comic book series of the same name with Disney’s spin and finesse.  According to Roy Conli, producer of Tangled, “Marvel’s original source material gave us six interesting and brilliant kids that we could explore.  And because we decided to take it into a heightened world, we were able to reimagine the characters for the film.”

The story is of a 14 year old boy, Hiro, played by Ryan Potter (“Supah Ninjas” and “Senior Project”) and the relationship that forms with a robot, Baymax, played by Scott Adsit (“30 Rock” and “St. Vincent”).   Baymax is a “personal health care companion”, with robotic emotion and his main purpose is to scan a human body and render aid as necessary.  Developed by Hiro’s older brother, Tadashi, Baymax develops a brotherly role for Hiro and as the movie goes on, we see the transformation of Hiro from boy to young man.  Director Don Hall (“Winnie the Pooh”) said “Baymax’s one programmed desire is “how can I help?”  He’s filled with compassion.  And Hiro is a teenager who has lost his way – their personalities play off each other in a way that is both funny and heartwarming.”  Tadashi attends “Nerd School”, as Hiro calls it – San Fransoyko Tech – a school for gifted students in science and math.  Hiro is only 14, but has already graduated High School and Tadashi really wants to help him find his way by applying to the University.  Hiro visits the University under duress and finds that the experiments and other students (who end up very important in his life) really peak his interest.  He agrees to apply and invents “microbots” to present at a large event to the Professor in charge of admissions.  By the end of his presentation, he’s sold on school.

The design team had many struggles developing the story and characters and did a lot of research on robotics at Carnegie Mellon University to bring Baymax to life.  Disney also created a new rendering tool named Hyperion to bring the fantastical new city of San Fransoyko (a meld of San Francisco and Toyko) to life in a rich, detailed way.

Scott Adsit was excited about being able to voice Baymax and when asked about the comraderie and loving relationship between Hiro and Baymax he said “I tried to be true to how I know his brain works.  He has a limited number of things he can say because Tadashi programmed him.” Scott was able to control the emotions that he voiced by keeping the character’s ability to function in mind.  Baymax is able to “grow” as a robot throughout the film and we see an incredible relationship blossom with Hiro.

When Ryan Potter heard that Disney was doing a Marvel comic movie (both of which he was a huge fan of) he said “I grew up watching Disney films and I grew up reading Marvel comics.  So when I heard that a Disney movie that was inspired by a Marvel comic actually featured an Asian American kid, I absolutely had to be a part of this film.”

Marvel’s Big Hero 6 comics were not widely known and when Don Hall (Director) asked John Lassetter (Executive Producer) during their work on Winnie the Pooh, if he could explore the Marvel vaults for inspiration for his next movie, he was given the green light.  What developed was a Disney movie with a lot of Marvel DNA according to Producer Ray Conli.

Two of the characters in the Big Hero 6 group are strong females.  Go Go Tomago is voiced by Jamie Chung (“Sin City 2: A Dame to Kill For” and TV’s Mulan on “Once Upon a Time”) and is the tough, athletic, adrenaline junkie of the group.  Jamie says, “Go Go is a total badass, even before the hero transformation, she’s tough.  She’s strong.  She can totally hold her own.”  Jamie says that she is a lot like Go Go – very loyal and tough.   Honey Lemon is voiced by Genesis Rodriguez (“Tusk” “Run All Night”), and is the spunky chemical whiz.  She is fashion forward (think heels, knee high socks and funky accessories) and is a wonderful mix of gorgeous and brilliant.  Genesis said “She’s very optimistic and happy – and so like me.  I used to be on a robotics team, so I love that she’s girly and into science.  It was very easy to play this character.”  Both ladies told us that putting on the hero suit (albiet virtually) in the film made both Go Go and Honey Lemon  able to portray their strong personalities and get into the characters and this new “world.”

TJ Miller (“The Next Great Comic” Winner and “Transformers:  Age of Extinction”) was working an impacted schedule when his Agent told him that Disney was casting a new movie called Big Hero 6.  He turned down the ability to audition twice saying he was just too busy.  The third time his Agent called and said “I think this is really going to be big”, he was asked to just record something on his iPhone and he finally relented.  He recorded some dialogue and sent it to his Agent.  He said that he actually forgot about it and months later he found out that he was going to be a part of “Disney’s big tent pole movie following FROZEN.” Damon Wayans (“New Girl” and “Happy Endings”) laughed at that point of the interview saying “Why didn’t he just LEAD with that?” which made us all laugh.  TJ voiced Fred, who isn’t even a student at the University – as he says in the movie “I’m the mascot by day and I’m the mascot by night.”  Fred also named each of the three other University characters – Go Go, Honey Lemon, and Wasabi.

Damon’s character, Wasabi, is the dreadlocked neatnik of the group who tries to keep everyone grounded.  Chris Williams (Director) says “He’s actually the most conservative, cautious – he’s the most normal among the group of brazen characters.  So he really grounds the movie in the second act and becomes, in a way, the voice of the audience and points out that what they’re doing is crazy.” Damon was drawn to Wasabi because he too has to have everything in it’s place.  Damon says “I can relate to Wasabi, I have a place for everything.  I need my books a certain way.  I need to smell good all the time.  I definitely have Wasabi in me.”

This movie will appeal to all genders and ages.  There are strong male and female characters as well as the lovable robot.  There is a focus on relationships between many characters and the development of a “team” who works together to save mankind.  The relationships are intertwined and the visual effects are stunning.  I was honored to be invited to the press conference and enjoyed every minute.  And thank you to Disney for my Big Hero 6 Backpack filled with goodies pictured above!

Vivian Lamolli of Hulu’s East Los High Interview!

vivian-lamolli-2014-nclr-alma-awards-02

I had the joy of speaking with Vivian Lamolli of Hulu’s East Los High and here’s what you need to know about the show!

East Los High centers around kids in a high school In East Los Angeles California. The show not only deals with diverse issues but features an all Latino cast of characters. It’s currently just finished airing its second season which you can exclusively watch on Hulu along with the first season and be on the lookout for the upcoming third season!

Vivian was kind enough to tell me all about the show and the wonderful feedback she’s gotten from playing her role on the show. One of the main things I loved about speaking with her was her true love of the craft. From speaking with her I could tell she truly caught the acting bug. She speaks of her roles with such pride and love that it’s easy to see how she’s gotten so far so fast in her career. From playing Dionne in Hair which happens to be one of her favorite theatre roles to date to playing Filli in East Los High Vivan put high energy into everything she does which was clearly evident from speaking with her for only a few moments.

Starting in theatre Vivian caught the acting bug from a very young age. In fact she told me she always loved performing and started to see it as a career choice in high school. She followed her dreams and with that kind of determination I can truly see this lovely girl going so far in the industry.

Kind enough to ask me my name and to make sure she got it right before we even started the interview Vivian was a refreshing change from the fast paced interviews I’m used to. She took her time to answer and show how much she cared not only about the interview but about acting and performing as a whole. This spunky young girl is ready to take over the world! So watch out.

Don’t forget to follow her on social media and be on the lookout for her upcoming projects!

Stay tuned for more on Vivian!

Disney’s Beach Club Resort Undergoing a Multi-Year Refurbishment

Disney’s Beach Club Resort is getting a major update – one that is scheduled to take almost two years to complete!  Almost the entire resort will be affected by this refurbishment at some point in the upcoming months.

The refurbishment of the guests rooms began earlier this month and will include new hard and soft goods.  Work is expected to continue on guest rooms through August 2015.

The entire project, which will also include public areas of the resort, is expected to take 20 months – finishing up in May 2016. The theme and overall feel of the resort will not be changing but the remodel will bring a fresh and modernized look the resort, which hasn’t seen many updates since it opened in 1990.

The resort is expected to remain open during the refurbishment, with areas being roped off as they are worked on, similar to how the remodel at the Polynesian has been handled.

We stayed at Disney’s Beach Club Resort earlier this year and while it is one of my favorite resorts on property, I’m excited to see the fresh new look when it’s finished in 2016.  What updates are you hoping to see when the project is complete?

2014 Mahaloween Luau at the Disneyland Resort

mahalo 2

September 29 I attended a really interesting event at Disneyland Resort called the Mahaloween Luau.  It was held at the Disneyland Hotel outside of Trader Sam’s and the Tangaroa Terrace on the patio.  There were 5 one-hour seatings with a maximum of 100 people per seating.  The cost was $125 per person and it was touted as a way for a limited number of people to ” have the pleasure of this kooky seasonal party that includes beverages and eats, live music and insider info with Imagineers and Disney cast members.”

We were supposed to move from the patio after drinks and appetizers inside to meet with Disney Imagineers for informative talks and socializing.  This was impossible and ultimately didn’t occur due to the fact that Trader Sam’s interior capacity wouldn’t hold 100 people at a time.  I believe Disney also realized that if they shut down Trader Sam’s to regular customers (the bar is ALWAYS full), they would lose money.

We were given two drink tickets (I can’t drink alcohol so I paid it forward to other attendees) and servers walked around with trays of yummy little appetizers that included ahi poke cones, chicken bites on endive, pulled pork sliders and fried long beans.  There was a lot of socializing on the patio, as many people came with groups of friends for the event.  I was there alone, but I did meet a great group at my table and we chatted for almost the whole hour about anything and everything Disney!

There was a section of the patio that had storyboards of the new Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto coming soon to the Polynesian Hotel at Walt Disney World.  And there were Hawaiian performers, although unless you were standing directly in front of them, the lighting and sound system made it very difficult to hear and see them.

At the end of the party, we got a bag of goodies including a Jungle River Cruise Expedition Bag that included a Trader Sam panama hat, a boxed special-edition “Mahaloween Luau” glass (with a dated stamp), a Trader Sam print on canvas, and a coupon good for 20 percent off at the adjacent Tangaroa Terrace. We were also able to purchase up to two additional second-edition Zombie souvenir glasses.  The artists for the canvas print and zombie glasses, Marcus Gonzalez and Tim Wollweber, were also onhand to sign their items.

Overall, it was a fun evening that I can see becoming a yearly event with some tweaking of possibly the location, adding more seatings or limiting from 100 to a lesser number for each seating and the flow of the evening and event.

Petition Presented to Disney for Down-Syndrome Princess

Disney has not shied away from characters with disabilities, and they have risen to create princesses with diversity of appearance, background, and goals.  But there’s not a princess or a character to whom children with Down syndrome can relate. October is Down syndrome awareness month, and some mothers in the San Francisco Bay area are collecting signatures for a petition they intend to present to the Walt Disney Company at the end of the month.

Keston Ott-Dahl’s 15 month old daughter, Delaney, loves Disney movies and Disney princesses. Ott-Dahl would like to see a princess with some of Delaney’s challenges succeed as Disney princesses do, so that Delaney and other children with Down syndrome might have a role model who seems more accessible.  Delaney’s mom acknowledges that Disney has tremendous influence on children and on society as a whole in demonstrating values and moral characters in their films and merchandising. If Disney were to add a developmentally disabled princess, it could affect change in the way the world views people with Down syndrome.

While Disney has shown us Nemo with his under-developed fin, and Dopey, whose very name says he’s not very bright, both of whom have huge hearts and wonderful character traits, they have not ventured into the realm of princes or princesses with any disabilities or challenges. In fact, the closest Disney has come to a developmentally challenged character is the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Ott-Dahl, who is also an author and a Down syndrome activist created and launched the petition (Care2.com petition) on October 2, hoped for one thousand signatures. Latest numbers show that there are almost 37,000 signatures. This petition, if received and responded to by Disney, could increase compassion and lessen bullying for children with Down syndrome at the same time it is giving these children heroes and animated characters they can watch, enjoy, and aspire to be like.

If you think Disney should add some heroes with developmental challenges, you can visit the petition at Care2.com petition and add your name to the growing numbers of people who hope Disney will listen.

If you have some thoughts to share about this, give a little whistle!  I’d love to hear it.

Disney Consumer Products (DCP) continues to introduce new “better for you” foods featuring some of its most popular characters to inspire kids worldwide to eat more fruits and vegetables and lead a healthier lifestyle. More than 4.1 billion servings of Disney-branded fruits and vegetables have been served in North America since DCP began tracking in 2006. Disney’s Frozen and Marvel’s Spider-Man-branded bagged apples by Sage are the latest additions and available now at grocery retailers nationwide. DCP’s (booth# 1838) wide assortment of licensed produce, featuring classic characters like Mickey Mouse to new favorites, will be on display at the PMA Fresh Summit Convention and Expo on October 17-19 in Anaheim, Calif.

Frozen

“Beyond the toy aisle, Frozen is also keeping the produce section fresh and cool,” said John T. King, vice president of licensing, consumables, Disney Consumer Products. “The global appeal of our stories and characters gives Disney Consumer Products an opportunity to continue to expand our produce portfolio and empower parents with more nutritious food options for their kids.”

Disney Consumer Products’ summer fruit program with Albertsons significantly increased traffic and produce sales at participating locations. Select Albertson stores created in-store displays to highlight the robust selection of Disney-branded fruits, and hosted kids and family events to encourage healthier eating. Through a recent collaboration with Winn Dixie, consumers were greeted with signage featuring characters from popular Disney properties including Frozen, Disney Princess, and Cars. Select Winn Dixie stores also hosted Disney-themed events with music, activities, and samples of fresh fruits and vegetables. Through new collaborations with DCP, licensees and retailers have seen their produce business thrive, and the impact on families multiply.

Research has shown that more than 94 percent of moms say healthy living is important. More than 60 percent of moms say that making healthy living fun is important to their family, and they look to Disney over other kids’ entertainment brands to be a leader in health and wellness.* As a part of the Disney Magic of Healthy Living initiative, Disney Consumer Products transformed the landscape of Disney-licensed food offerings and maintains a balanced portfolio with 85 percent of all of its U.S. licensed food and beverage products meeting the company’s nutrition guidelines with only 15 percent reserved for special occasion treats. Many of Disney licensed foods also carry the Mickey Check, a tool to help make it easier for kids and families to identify those products that meet the company’s nutrition guidelines.

Disney Magic of Healthy Living partners with parents to inspire kids and families to lead healthier lifestyles. Through engaging content, useful tools and unique experiences, this company-wide initiative helps parents by making nutritious eating and physical activity simple and fun. Under the umbrella, the TRYit campaign, inspires kids to try new foods, fun moves, and simple ways to be their best.

Under the Sea – Journey to the Little Mermaid at Walt Disney World has been around for barely 2 years and word is it will be closed for refurbishment starting Feb 2nd and ending March 6, 2015. Sadly this will happen during my mini-vacation. Hopefully you can plan your vacation around these dates, if this ride is a must do for you.

It is said that there will be additions to the ride similar to the ones that were made to the same attraction in Disneyland last year. If you will be at Disney World during that time I would plan accordingly.

Visiting the new & improved Club 33 at the Disneyland Resort

club 33 3

While I was at the Mahaloween Luau last month (September 29) at the Disneyland Hotel, I received a surprise message on my phone asking if I would like to go to Club 33 for lunch or dinner with my girls that same week!  Are you kidding me?  Club 33 was on my bucket list as a huge Disneyland fan and I was always thinking of ways to find someone who was a member that could make a reservation for me!  I gratefully answered that I would love to and that lunch would be better for us, as I hadn’t packed dressy clothes for myself for this trip and I knew that the dress code for dinner was much stricter and would be better saved for a date night with my husband.   A few messages later, and I had a 1:50pm lunch reservation the very next day, Tuesday, September 30 for myself and my daughters, ages 6 and 9.

Like most Disneyland goers who are also Walt Disney and Disneyland history enthusiasts, I have taken many pictures outside of the old 33 placard in New Orleans Square wishing I could go inside.  On July 18, 2014 the new and improved Club 33 was unveiled to members and their guests.  The new entrance is now deeper in New Orleans Square and the placard is smaller and more discreet.  The once public Court de Angels is also only available to Club 33 members and is closed off by large doors to anyone walking between shops in the area.

We rang the doorbell and were greeted by a castmember with a clipboard who checked our names and reservation time.  We were ushered inside and out into the remodeled Court de Angels where we were given cold towels (it was 100 degrees that day!) and fruit infused water.  We waited in the courtyard for a few minutes taking pictures and a castmember descended the staircase and took us upstairs to Club 33.

Once upstairs, we were taken inside and to our table, which was across the main dining room and right next to the balcony.  We were able to go outside several times throughout our 3 course meal and people watch and take in the scenery from this quiet balcony.

Our meal consisted of 3 courses – appetizer, main course and dessert.  The girls chose off of the Club 33 children’s menu and I was given the lunch menu.

The food was delicious and after we ate, we took time to go back on the balcony for a bit to relax.  We also visited the ladies room and the fainting couch was a HUGE hit with my girls.

club 33 8

We walked back out to the main lobby and I bought some exclusive Club 33 souvenirs including a small Dooney & Bourke purse with Club 33 lining and hangtag, Club 33 suede baseball cap, Club 33 Tommy Bahama Polo for my husband and Mickey Mouse ears with the Club 33 logo on them for my girls.  After paying for my goodies, we took out time leaving.  We walked around the inside of the lobby and slowly descended the stairs into Court de Angels again and took more pictures in there before exiting.

I am so grateful and thankful for my Fairy Godmother who allowed us the experience of Club 33 and look forward to taking my very jealous husband, who was back in Arizona working (he calls himself the Pixie Dust Enabler), on a date night there very soon!

I hope you enjoyed my article.  Have you ever been to Club 33?  I would love to compare notes – leave a comment below!

Walt Disney World Planning – ADR’s For First Timers

flynn
flynn

MeZebraDome

So you’ve gone ahead and booked your first WDW tripcongrats! Once your trip is about 6 months away, you’ll need to make your Advance Dining Reservations (or ADR’s in Disney-speak!) for your table service meals. But if you have no clue where to begin, fear not – as it is easier than you think! Here’s a guide to picking out your ADR’s that should help you get started

The ADR: A Quick Rundown – So ok – what exactly does ADR mean anyway? An Advanced Dining Reservation or ADR basically is a guarantee that you will have a table at a restaurant on a given night around a given time – it is NOT a reservation, it just means that you will be on the list and will get the next table that opens up after your allotted time. Disney allows you to make ADR’s 180 days before your trip, and many of them fill up quickly believe it or not! Check out more info on how ADR’s work here

When it comes to actually making your ADR’s, there are a LOT of Disney restaurants and dining experiences to choose from, so many that it can be overwhelming to try and settle on just a few! I personally like to go with the “one of everything” approach, by choosing one from each of the following categories:

Character meals – Dining with your favorite Disney characters is a must do – and there are plenty of options to choose from too! Some are buffets, some are served family style (which means everything off a pre-determined menu is brought right to your table, and you can have as many refills as you want!), and some are more of a traditional sit down meal. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are available in all 4 parks and in many of the Disney Resorts – and the idea is the same for all of them, the characters will make their rounds (usually takes about an hour for them to cover the dining room) and pose for pictures and autographs and hugs too! If you have younger kids who love meeting characters, this is a great way to meet several in one place, and they come right to your table too! A personal favorite of mine is the Crystal Palace in the Magic Kingdom – breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets are served daily, and Winnie The Pooh, Tigger, Piglet, and Eeyore are always there to interact with everyone

Buffets – There are plenty around WDW, and some are definitely worth checking out. We all know how a buffet works, its basically an all you can eat extravaganza with tons of food options, and Disney really does the buffet justice – breakfasts with freshly made waffles and pastries and omelet stations, and dinners with carved meats and make your own ice cream sundae bars – it doesn’t get much better than that! I know some people shy away from buffets as they think they are all the same – reheated food that is bland and boring – but that’s really not the case at Disney, and one favorite that proves this point is Boma – an African themed buffet at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge that serves up breakfast and dinner daily. Fresh assorted salads, hummus, pita bread, carved meats, roasted chicken, an assortment of soups, plus African specialties like bobotie (a spiced quiche like dish) really make this a winner in my book – oh and they have amazing desserts too (two words – zebra domes!) Buffet tips – arrive hungry, take your time savoring and don’t plan any fastpasses for thrill rides for a few hours after your meal!

Something “new” (cuisine wise) – WDW offers every type of cuisine out there – and you should definitely take advantage of that when making your ADR’s! Epcot’s World Showcase is an especially great place to try something new – each country offers authentic cuisine – like bratwurst and beer in Germany, pasta and wood fired pizza in Italy, Sushi in Japan, and much, much more! This is the time to branch out of your comfort zone of burgers and chicken and experience all that Disney has to offer (and if you REALLY hate what you ordered, the staff will generally be pretty good about bringing you something else so you don’t leave hungry!)

Signature Dining/Dinner Shows – Looking to celebrate a special event? Then plan a special meal! Disney has a bunch of “signature” restaurants – which basically means they are nicer and fancier than your standard character buffet, and more expensive too (they will cost you two Disney dining plan table service credits instead of one), but in many cases they are worth it. Another option that falls into this “special” category is dinner shows – a meal and entertainment all in one! I love the Luau at the Polynesian Resort, but my parents are partial to the Hoop de doo revue – a wild west themed stage show that offers plenty of laughs and buckets of fried chicken too! When it comes to celebrating, a special meal just might be the ticket – so before you right off the “signature” dining as too expensive or not for you, explore the options here and here, you’ll find seafood, Italian, steak, and more – all served in an elegant setting perfect for romance

Variety Is The Spice Of Life – Whatever you decide, I highly recommend you vary it up – don’t just eat burgers and chicken fingers the whole time you’re at WDW – try something new! After all, isn’t that the point of vacation, to live on the edge and have new experiences and memories?

Check out these links to Resort Dining and Park dining to get more information on all the great dining at WDW, and when making your ADR’s remember the tips above, and don’t panic too much about whether you’re making the right choices – because pretty much all Disney food is amazing so you will never go hungry no matter where you eat!
