McFarland USA Red Carpet and Movie Premiere in Bakersfield

Bakersfield Movie premiere

Maya Cinemas in Bakersfield, California was the place to be this Sunday, February 15th for  the Red Carpet event and movie premiere of Disney’s “McFarland, USA”.  Arriving at the theatre we found a long line of fans and media ready to check in.  According to my sources, in attendance would be several of the stars of the film including  Kevin Costner, Carlos Pratts, Rafael Martinez, Michael Aguero, Ramiro Rodriguez, Hector Duran, Johnny Ortiz, Sergio Avelar,  as well as the real life stars and champions, Jim White, Danny Diaz, David Diaz, Damacio Diaz, Johnny Samaniego, Victor Puentes, Thomas Valles, and  Juanita and Paul Diaz.

Arriving first were the Diaz Brothers, Danny, David and Damacio with their families.  I asked the brothers for a quick quote about what had changed for them with the film’s release.  “We are just excited to be here finally, it has been a long time coming and we are finally here.”

With everyone focusing on Coach White, the Diaz brothers and the cast, I took a moment to speak with Mrs. Coach White who shared they moved to McFarland in 1964 and stuck around raising their family and being embraced and embracing McFarland.   The movie based on true facts did not depict, they had 3 daughters, a point she wanted to make sure I mentioned and also shared how much love the school kids and she had for one another.  She was a director of  a preschool in Delano and was “Mrs. Coach” and looked around saying “this is all surreal for Jim and I.”

Kevin Costner was the last one to walk the Red Carpet and joked about how he was glad he did not have to do all the running as he did not like running.  He talked about growing up not far from McFarland and that living in a wonderful place that recognizes that “we are something, we do stand for something and our kids stand for something.”  He went on to say “how like everywhere else in the country, if you give kids a goal they can exceed way beyond the goals which is what happened with McFarland.”   Kevin Costner shared how impressed he was reading the story of McFarland years ago and being inspired by it, only to find himself a part of the movie years later.  Mr. Costner talked about Jim White’s success and how usually with success comes change and the desire to move on and  move up into bigger and better things and yet Coach White just like the runners, stayed in McFarland.

With the movie about to start, we were all asked to take our seats.  As I settled in once more to enjoy the movie for a 3rd time in a week, I took a quick look around the packed theatre.  This time, full of McFarland community members, including past and current coaches, students and city officials.  Although the movie showed McFarland as a heartwarming community full of love and strong family values, I did not not fully anticipate the audience reaction and huge support for the movie.  Every familiar site brought yelling and clapping.  During the scenes where the boys are competing you could feel the tension in the air as they silently cheered the runners on and I know there were many of us with tears in our eyes during the final pep talk by Coach White (Kevin Costner) before the team took first place at State.  The end credits and Juanes‘ song has us swaying and mouthing the words to “Juntos. ”  On the ride home, I thought about the events of the day and realized I should have known the home town premiere would be one of complete and total support because just like the movie showed, McFarland may be a small town in Central California, but it is overflowing with love, unity and support that is a pleasure to witness first hand.

“McFarland, USA” is based on the true story of coach Jim White and 7 novice runners who form McFarland High School’s first cross country team and despite tremendous odds, go on to win the State championship and achieve their own little corner of the American Dream.  Full of Hispanic traditions and a heartwarming, feel good story line, McFarland USA brings us the trials and triumph of a group of young men and their coach who not only ran for the gold ring but grabbed it and kept running for more. “McFarland, USA” is released in theatres on February 20, 2015 and is an emotional true story of hard work, determination, family and the love that binds it all together.

Loretta Garcia, Entertainment Writer for Chip and Co, .  Don’t miss McFarland, USA and check out the new app from myLINGO to enjoy the movie in Spanish.  Is it on your bucket list?

Disney joins forces with McFarland community to build playground.

Mcfarland playground

As part of the excitement and celebration of the new Disney movie,  McFarland, USA,  More than 200 Disney VoluntEARSKaBOOM! (a non-profit organization) and members of the cast and community of McFarland, all worked together to build a brand new playground in the neighborhood.   The playground inspired by children’s drawings created in an earlier event in January, included a kid friendly playspace as well as an adult exercise section and a spot in the shade for parents and older community members to enjoy.   The new playground is one of many that have and will continue to be built through the longstanding relationship between Disney and KaBOOM!.   Disney’s Magic of Healthy Living, an initiative that partners with parents to inspire kids to lead healthier lives, will bring the magic of play to over 83,000 kids and families by the end of 2015.

The event which began early in the morning in an empty lot was crawling by the time I arrived at around 2 pm.   In the area for the premiere screening of McFarland USA later that evening in Bakersfield, I decided to visit McFarland and take a tour of the town.  A wrong turn off the freeway exit, led us to the playground where we immediately decided to check out the event.

I was able to meet and get a few words from several community members and cast, including Chief of Police, Scot Kimble, Carlos Pratts as well as the Mayor of McFarland, Manuel Cantu, Jr., who were among the crowd involved in everything from assembling the equipment to stamping down the dirt and shoveling the cement.  Denise McNamara, with the police department shared it was a joint effort between Disney and the Tri-agency partners (city, school and parks district).  Scot Kimble, Chief of Police talked about how Disney wanted to give back to McFarland so everyone joined together to build a playground.   Scot explained how kids and parents selected the colors and helped design the playground.  What should have been a 6 month process, was completed in 6 weeks and the actual work was done within a 6 hour time frame, today.  Kimble described how excited everyone was to be able to build a playground and mentioned how it was also a great boost for the east side of the city who has always been a bit behind over the west side. Carlos Pratt, who plays Thomas Valles, was happy to talk to me and shared how the movie had given him more family than he ever had before.  Coming from a small family, he now has the 7 runners (cast members) and Kevin (Costener) as well as many of the original runners.  I asked Carlos if the closeness and friendship in the movie had continued off screen.  Carlos said they were a big family, not that they did not fight but the love they all had was true.  Carlos Pratt shared the rumors floating around about him being considered for the next Spider man movie and said he would love to be a superhero and would do an amazing job, if given the chance.   Johnny Sameniego (one of the original runners) commented that Carlos played the part of Thomas very well.   Mayor Manuel Cantu, Jr gave me a few moments and shared that the movie coming at this time has given the community a big boost.  The movie has done incredible things and with the help of the partners like Disney, KaBOOM! and the Tri-agencies as well as the community support, McFarland had so much more to accomplish and there is so much more to come.

The joy and pride was evident in the faces and voices of the people I spoke with and the excitement even after 7 hours of physical labor was a pleasure to watch as they stomped down the dirt to the beat of music blasting from huge speakers. Making that wrong turn off the freeway was the best part of my afternoon.   If you are ever in So. California, take a few hours and head up north to McFarland, as the Mayor said it’s “a great little place full of good people.”

Don’t miss McFarland, USA on February 20th in theatres nationwide and let me know if you love it as much as I do.  Don’t for get to check out my articles for entertainment news and updates on www.chipandco.com.

Four Parks

Disney World is such a magical place for me. I have been going here since the early 90’s and for me it is where I love to escape. People ask do I have a favorite theme park but really I don’t. I love things about each one which is what gave me the ideas for my 2 Disney Finds for today.

The shirt above Four Parks One World is a saying that I have said for years. It’s a play on Walt Disney World and for me embodies the spirit of my favorite theme parks. Right now this design is on sale on our Tee Shirt Store.

One World

Next up is Four Parks One Home, for me Disney World is my home so I thought this would be a good closer to my home series. This shirt is also on sale for $14 for the next 2 days on the Chip and Co Tee Shirt Store.

McFarland, USA Press Movie Preview

McFarland USA

The Walt Disney Pictures media movie preview for McFarland, USA was held at my favorite location, the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California.  As always, the thought of getting to see the latest Disney movie at the studio, puts a huge smile on my face.

I was excited to see McFarland, USA after all the trailers and previews, Disney had shared with us.  Grabbing our popcorn and securing a seat in the packed theatre, I settled down and got ready to see if it would live up to its hype.

The movie is based on a true story set in 1987 and starts out with football, Coach Jim White (Kevin Costner) during a half time pep talk.  When Coach White loses his temper with his star player, it results in the lose of his job. Offered a position as asst. football coach and PE/science teacher at McFarland HS in California, Jim White (Kevin Costner) takes his family and possessions and makes the long drive west.   The family’s first look at the house and neighborhood including an encounter with the local low rider car club (gang) leaves Jim questioning his decision to relocate to McFarland, California.

An incident during a football game has Coach White sticking up for a player, which gets him removed yet again from football coaching duties.  This latest situation along with several others that occur during PE, lead Coach White to see the potential in several of the students and set up a cross country team.  A new opportunity for the predominately Latin community of high schoolers, whose primary reason for running is to simply get to their destination.   Setting up and training the McFarland HS team is no small feat as family, school and work responsibilities interfere constantly.  But along the way, Coach White and the team learn what it takes to be a Cross Country coach and runner, working together to learn how to fit training, compete and win the prelim races and finally the State Championship Meet.

The team consists of 7 runners  – Johnny Ortiz (Jose Cardenas), Victor Puentes (Sergio Avelar), Thomas Valles (Carlos Pratts), Johnny Sameniego (Hector Duran), and the three Diaz Brothers – David (Rafael Martinez), Damacio (Michael Aguero) and Danny (Ramiro Rodriguez).  The Diaz brothers help their parents as “pickers” in the fields, before and after school and on weekends.   Thomas Valles, also a picker,  is dealing with a pregnant sister and negative father figure, Coach White and his family must learn to live and adjust to life in McFarland,  while the other runner have their own unique hardships to deal with.  Blending cross country meets and fundraising car washes, Latin traditions like tamale and quinceñera parties, and a heartwarming story together in a  way that will make you cheer in your seat,  McFarland, USA takes us on a journey showing us that not matter where you are from or what life deals you, there is a champion inside each of us able to run and grab a piece of the American dream.

I can’t wait for everyone to see Disney’s McFarland USA, premiering, February 20, 2015.    It is a feel good story that will make you laugh, cry and cheer!  Loretta Garcia, Entertainment Writer for ChipandCo.com – see you at the movies!

It’s no secret that I love Disney. And I love fashion. And when the two come to together is a perfect combination my bank account takes a serious hit. Designer LC Lauren Conrad has created an amazing Cinderella themed collection for Kohl’s that I cannot stop gushing over! The pale and delicate color palette of the collection pairs perfectly with the flowing tulle skirts and skimming hem lines to really evoke the feel of Cinderella.

Just in time for Disney’s live action release of Cinderella in March, these outfits will last long past midnight (and well into the spring months ahead). Available online and in stores, the collection is expected to add shoes (alas, no glass slippers) to help you complete your look. A perfect addition to any Princess lover’s royal closet, check out the designs below.

Cinderella Collection for Kohl's

Mesh-Back Dress available in pale blue and pale pink. This dress so looks airy and delicate – a great spring and summer staple piece. You could dress this down with a cardigan and flats or sandals for a day look, or dress it up with some heels and a statement necklace for evening.

Cinderella Collection for Kohls

Here is the designer herself modeling the Organza Bow-Back Dress in blues (also available in pinks).

This gorgeous Tulle Skirt has me struggling not to reach for my credit card, jump in the car, and head to Kohl’s right now. I love this look. The top version reminds me of a watercolor painting and the colors work nicely together. The bottom skirt has an underlying fabric that features a Cinderella skyline of the castle. This skirt also comes in the same pale pink and pale blue as seen throughout the rest of the collection. I seriously cannot decide which one I love more!

The Glass Slipper Sweater is a stylish nod to the iconic shoe.

Cinderella Collection for Kohl's

The last piece is this Castle Graphic Sweatshirt. Pair this with the pale blue or pink tulle skirt and you have yourself an outfit fit for a Princess!

Okay, so I’m a bit obsessed with this new collection and I’m already creating a payment plan for when I run up my credit card bill with these purchases. What do you think of these designs? Are you a fan of wearing your love for Disney on your sleeve (pun intended) or do you prefer the more subtle pieces in the collection. Let us know what you think in the comment box below!

The All New Disney California Adventure!

DCA
DCA

From the thrills of Cars Land to the romance of Buena Vista Street, Disney California Adventure is a testament to what Disney Parks does best – connect guests to the iconic stories, characters and music they love, helping them make shared memories to last a lifetime.   Part of a 5 year expansion that added more Disney Magic and more experiences for guests of the Disneyland Resort, the expansion provided a great family vacation destination with not one but two theme parks, three hotels and the Downtown Disney shopping and dining district.

Visitors rush to experience Radiator Springs Racers in Cars Land, enjoy eight new food locations including Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge, nine new shops including Los Feliz Five & Dime, plus more than a dozen new entertainment experiences along Buena Vista Street.  giving  park guests a full day-to-night experience at Disney California Adventure.

Buena Vista Street is a bustling center of entertainment and opportunity that transports guests to the California that attracted Walt Disney in his early days as an animation pioneer.

The Happiest Place on Earth just gets happier.

Guests enter Disney California Adventure through another lively and richly detailed land, Buena Vista Street. The redesigned entrance brings the spirit of Walt Disney into the park as never before, immersing guests in a locale reminiscent of Los Angeles in the 1920s, a time and place full of hope and optimism.  With its familiar shop names, period costumes and architecture, Buena Vista Street is inspired by the “city of dreams” Walt Disney found when he arrived by train in California.

The icon of Disney California Adventure, the Carthay Circle Theatre, is a majestic building at the end of Buena Vista Street that recalls, in name and architectural style, the great California movie palace where “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” premiered in 1937. Carthay Circle Theatre, home to the Carthay Circle Restaurant and Lounge, anchors the newly designed plaza from which guests set out to experience all the thrills, excitement and wonder of Disney California Adventure. Upstairs, guests enjoy Southern California cuisine and the ambience of a post-gala party at Carthay Circle Restaurant, while the ground floor Carthay Circle Lounge offers appetizers and bar service, along with historic photographs and exhibits.

The Red Car Trolley, based on Los Angeles’ historic Pacific Electric Red Car Line, transports guests from Buena Vista Street down Hollywood Boulevard, to the footsteps of the famed Hollywood Tower Hotel, home to The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror.  Street characters and entertainers such as the Red Car Trolley News Boys and Five & Dime add to the lively fun along Buena Vista Street, engaging guests as they step back in time.

The expansion of Disney California Adventure, announced in 2007, has produced a succession of new entertainment and attractions.

  • Toy Story Mania! opened in 2008, inviting guests into an interactive, ride-through, attraction where they enter a 4-D carnival midway hosted by characters from the Disney●Pixar movie “Toy Story.”
  • World of Color,” the nighttime water spectacular, debuted in 2010 and the popular show has been seen by more than 5 million guests.
  • In 2011, the park reached its next milestone with the premiere of The Little Mermaid ~ Ariel’s Undersea Adventure, a ride-through attraction based on the Disney animated classic movie.
  • Additional highlights included new restaurants such as Paradise Garden Grill and the enhancement and re-theming of such attractions as Mickey’s Fun Wheel, Games of the Boardwalk, Silly Symphony Swings and Goofy’s Sky School, and an after-dark dance party in Hollywood Land in the park.

The transformation of Disneyland Resort, a world-class, multi-day, family vacation destination, began in 2001 with the opening of Disney California Adventure, the Downtown Disney district and Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa.  Since then, the Disneyland Resort has continued to grow with the addition of popular attractions and shows such as Star Tours – The Adventures Continue, now in 3-D; Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage; Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters and The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror and the popular Frozen Fun Experience.

In 2009, the resort completed a major expansion of Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa, which included the first West Coast destination for Disney Vacation Club.  A magical renovation of the signature Disneyland Hotel was completed in early 2012, including re-imagined guest rooms, a new restaurant and bar, and a new pool with monorail-themed water slides.

With all the renovations and additions, this is the time to visit Disneyland Resort and spend a day enjoying Disney’s California Adventure.

Wishing you Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust
