10 Things to Skip to Save Money on your Disney Vacation

disneyworldgrandfloridianhotel

As a seasoned veteran of Disney World with young children, I have learned a few ways to save money on our Disney Vacations that I wish I knew the first time! If you are a frugal parent like me, who starts saving a year in advance, or trying to figure out how you can ever go to Disney because it’s so expensive, this list is for you.

I also have a list of Ways to Save When Planning a Disney Trip.

Things to SKIP to save money:

1. Stroller Rentals: Bring your own from home to save the rental fees of about $16/day. You can find umbrella strollers that fold up nicely for around $25. If you have kids over 5, you may want to skip the strollers all together.

2. Eating Out Every Meal: I ship myself a package and pick it up when I check-in. I like to pack snacks, breakfast foods, drinks, and candy to save money at the Parks, and eat breakfast in the room. Find out how to ship yourself a package HERE. You can even go to a nearby store or place an order at GardenGrocer.com to get breakfast foods or lunchbox stuff to take with you.  You can take food and drink into the Park! For a list of what’s allowed, click HERE.
3. Bottled Water: In the Parks you will pay about $2.50-$3 for a bottle of water. Ask for a free cup of ice water at the Quick Service restaurants. You can spice it up a little with flavored drops or a packet of lemonade. You could also bring a refillable water bottle too. I don’t like to carry stuff, so I just get a glass of water when needed. If you just HAVE to have bottled water, ship yourself a case from Amazon or Walmart.com and pick it up at the front desk (see #2.)
4. Weekends and Summer time: Resort Room rates are higher of Friday and Saturday nights, so if you want to save money, book a trip that is Sunday to Friday morning to avoid the jump in prices. There are value seasons when resort room rates are the lowest, such as some weeks in January, February, and September.  Value seasons offer the lowest crowds and prices.

5. Park Hoppers: If it’s in your budget, I highly recommend Park Hopper tickets to be able to visit multiple Parks per day. But, if you want to save some cash, drop the Hoppers and just do one Park per day. If you want to leave that Park, you can always check out the new Disney Springs (Downtown), go Resort Hopping, swim, or  do a round of mini-golf at Fantasia Gardens!
6. Character Meals: Unless you have the Basic Dining plan (also called Plus Dining) where you get 1 Table Service meal a day, skip the character meals. They run about $40-60 per adult. An 18% gratuity is added for parties of 6 or more, plus tax. It can be an extremely expensive meal. Although, the character experiences are a lot of fun,  and the restaurants are great, you can meet these character in the Parks for free. This is why I DO recommend getting the Basic Dining Plan. You pre-pay for your meals so you don’t have to worry about these extra costs. Better yet, go in the Fall during FREE DINING!
7. Preferred Rooms: It’s not that bad to stay standard! I stayed in the VERY BACK of  VERY LAST building at All-Star Music Resort once. It was a hike to get anywhere, but we had extra money for other things. Change your room to a standard room, which means you will have to walk further to get to the pools, bus stops, and food court, but the room rate goes down a lot. There are also standard “view” rooms too. This means you will be looking at another building or a parking lot out your window, versus a pool or water view.
8. Souvenir Overload: EVERY souvenir at Disney is cute! It’s so hard to pick the perfect one. This is how I avoid souvenir overload…be PATIENT! I wait until the end of the night, after I have seen everything to select a souvenir at the Park, OR go to Downtown Disney’s World of Disney Store to see everything all in once place! I could spend hours there! For the kids, we give them each a spending limit, on a gift card marked with their name. We advise them to pick one small thing a day only or save it all until we go Downtown. Better yet, buy souvenirs at home and secretly stash them in your suitcase. Five Below, Kohls, Walmart, and even online at the DisneyStore.com has cheaper (sometimes the same) stuff, especially during sales and free shipping promos.
9. Using Credit Cards: You already spent a lot to get to Disney, don’t charge up your card balance while there! Buy Gift Cards to help keep a budget. You will only spend what’s on the gift cards, and be more thrifty with a set limit. Don’t link your credit or debit card to your Magicband! Yes, it’s more convenient, but you may lose track of the amount spent, and have regrets later.
10. Holidays and Ticketed Events: Going during Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, and Halloween weeks is not only more expensive, it’s way more crowded. For some it’s the only time they can go without missing school. But if you are on a budget, go between Holidays.  Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party are SUCH magical events, you should experience them, if you can financially!! But they are expensive events too, at around $65/ticket. Instead, go to the Epcot Flower and Garden Festival, or the International Food and Wine Festival or Star Wars Weekends for funevents that don’t cost extra! These are free events that happen annually. JoAnn Dean Killingsworth, the First Person to Play Snow White at Disneyland Passes Away at 91

First snow white

You might be asking yourself, who is that? Well, she was the first Snow White at Disneyland. Yes, that is right she was the first person to ever to play Snow White at Disneyland.

She was a professional figure skater and dancer on Broadway and in Hollywood. She was was born in Minneapolis. She moved to LA with her family in 1931. After her move to LA they opened a canteen that became a restaurant in what was known as the Beverly Manor apartment house in Hollywood, California.  She went on to become the skating and dancing partner of Gene Nelson. She did some print modeling and made her first appearance as Snow White in 1955, riding a float down Main Street at Disneyland. She is survived by two stepsons, Bill and Larry Killingsworth, and a brother.

Her credits include:

  • “Silver Skates” (1943)
  • “Something for the Boys” (1944)
  • “State Fair” (1945)
  • “Rainbow Over Texas” (1946)
  • “Lullaby of Broadway” (1951)
  • “Sabrina” (1954)
  • “Red Garters” (1954)
  •  “Nob Hill” (1954)
  • She was also a “Redette” dancer on the “Red Skelton Hour” for 3 years in the late ’50s.
  • In 1959, she and her husband, at the time, James Killingsworth started a  magazine in Newport Beach that then became the Orange County Illustrated. The magazine went under in the 80’s after they divorced.

Our condolences go out to the family.

Wishing you Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust

The Amazing Cheese Sauce at Disney World Could be Just a Memory

Casey's Hot Dogs

Hiya! I am so saddened by this news that I can not even properly introduce myself or even make a sarcastic comment because I am currently fighting back the tears. I LOVE cheese, any and all cheese. Especially the hot nacho cheese in a cup at Disney World. It is like heaven! I mean you can even get as much as you want. Sometimes I go to Disney just for the all you can eat cheese!

I have been told by a few trusted sources that the cheese containers at Cosmic Rays and Casey’s are a big deep empty hole. Say it ain’t so!! Nothing has been confirmed yet but it seems as though things are headed in that direction. I suspect this may have something to do with the lawsuit that was filed against Disney, where the child burned his face on cheese sauce that was too hot. I was told that it might still be available but behind the counter. So which means the already over worked CM’s will have even more to do, and the all you can eat aspect of the heaven in a cup will probably go bye bye!

Please say a prayer and put some positive energy and pixie dust in the universe so that our little heaven in a cup does not leave!!

Anywho, this all the Disney gossip I have for now. For my past gossip articles be sure to check them out here. Got any good gossip/rumors please email me at anonymouse@chipandco.com or on my Facebook page.

Recently I was invited to SeaWorld to check out their Celebrating America concert series as well as the brand new Shamu show that celebrates 50 years of SeaWorld!
It was such a fun filled event from getting to listen to Trick Pony (In the AC might I add!) to watching SeaWorld’s spectacular fireworks light up the sky after a breathtaking performance from Shamu and his friends. It was a summer night filled with fun music and unforgettable scenery that I won’t soon forget!

The Celebrating America concert series celebrates the best of the USA while getting to jam with Trick Pony and in the coming weeks Crystal Gale and Phil Vassar! The concert was great with wonderful lighting and Trick Pony put on such amazing show. Everyone was on their feet and having fun which is what summer is all about. On top of the lovely concert the food at this even was to die for! (If only there were a little more of it!) I dined at Expedition Café in Antarctica and it was so delicious so be sure to check them out next time you visit!
As night fell the summer night began with music and lights as Shamu cam out to play in a spectacular show filled with music water tricks and of course splashing! The show ended in an incredible bought of fireworks that took my breath away completely. By the end of the night I was tired yet exhilarated as I had kicked off my summer in the best way possible… at SeaWorld!

Summer Nights begins June 20 and runs through August 9 with nightly festivities including:

Celebrate America Concert Series – Every Saturday and Sunday guests can enjoy all-American performances by a variety of artists and genres at this all-new summer concert series. The celebration of America continues throughout the park with all-American food and daily happy hours. Plus, pass holders can enjoy a complimentary sample of a tasty brew.

Enjoy live performances from this American country music group at 5:00 PM and 7:30 PM. Concerts will take place in the air-conditioned Nautilus Theater and are included with park admission.

Shamu’s Celebration: Light Up The Night – Experience this returning fan-favorite, a high-energy show featuring original music, amazing production elements and see SeaWorld’s majestic killer whales. Shamu Stadium will transform with stylistic lighting and colorful backdrops to create a social and celebratory atmosphere ending with a fireworks finale spectacle.
Late-Night Thrills –SeaWorld’s thrill rides are a whole different experience when the sun goes down. Guests can experience Kraken, a thrilling roller coaster, and Manta, a facedown, headfirst roller coaster where riders can skim, glide and fly like a manta ray, and many more.

Be sure to check out Summer Nights at SeaWorld and stay tuned for more!

A sneak peek at the new merchandise coming to Disney Parks in 2015

watch

As summer begins at Disney World and Disneyland we have a sneak peek of the new merchandise coming to the parks later this year.

MagicBand MagicSliders
One of the more popularly requested accessories for MagicBands at Walt Disney World Resort is a watch. Disney is reporting there will be two MagicSlider timepieces coming this summer – a Minnie Mouse analog timepiece and one with a digital display.

NPM758963-613x471

Cogsworth and Chef Figment Plush
Cogsworth may be one of my favorite characters from Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.” I was happy to see there will be a medium-sized figurine coming this September. This figurine is the companion piece to the Lumiere figurine Disney released in 2013. The best part – Cogsworth’s face is a working clock!

Also arriving this fall is a new 12-inch Figment plush created especially for the 20th Epcot International Food & Wine Festival. My favorite festival of the year returns to Walt Disney World Resort from September 25 through November 16.

NPM758964-613x613

Villainous T-Shirts
This fall, Chernabog from Walt Disney’s “Fantasia” and Hades from Disney’s “Hercules” will be featured on new Disney Villain T-shirts. The artwork was created by Disney Design Group artist Dave Keefer.

NPM758962-613x504

Disney Pins From Regions Beyond
Memento Mori, the Haunted Mansion-themed shop located in Liberty Square at Magic Kingdom Park, inspired two open edition pins coming late summer. One pin resembles the brooch that female cast members wear in the location, while the other looks like a sign found outside the shop at Memento Mori.

NPM758965-613x336

Disney Theme Park Holiday Ornaments
This year Disney will release ornaments featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse dressed in attire representing different Disney Theme Parks. I love the Epcot Mickey and Minnie ornament with them wearing spacesuits from the 1980s.

Look for these and other items coming to select merchandise locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort.

Which item is your favorite? Please share in the comments below.
