Mary

The holidays just got better for this Disney Addict! Target is presenting The Wonderful World of Disney’s “Mary Poppins” on December 12th on ABC – 8:00 pm ET (check local listings for time). It has been 13 years since fans have had the opportunity to enjoy our favorite nanny on television.

Mary Poppins was my first Disney movie and holds a very special place in my heart and childhood memories.   Full of classic songs that we all know and love, the story of Mary Poppins and her time spent with the Banks Family, taught me many lessons.   Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber) who along with Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews) and her good friend, chimney sweep, Bert (Dick Van Dyke) took us us on incredible adventures.  I learned it’s okay to “love to laugh,”  “Supercalifragalisticexpialidocious” is a word, “A spoon full of sugar” helped the medicine go down easier and you could “Feed the Birds” for just tuppance a bag.

Disney’s Mary Poppins based on the book by P.L. Travers, was and always will be the movie that turned me from a kid who loved Disney to a full fledged Disney Addict for life.

This Entertainment Writer will be recording and sitting in front of my big screen TV with my popcorn and wearing my Disney PJs on December 12th to enjoy Mary Poppins on ABC.   Will you be watching too?

My favorite gifts to give to my family during the holiday season are always ones like this – something fun we can all go and experience together with a little quality time, rather than just buying them more stuff to own. The magic of Disney storytelling comes alive with these amazing live performances – either on stage or on the ice – combining the graceful choreography of ice-skating with exciting musical numbers and your favorite Disney movies & characters. I’ve already bought my tickets for our local show using this great discount and I can’t wait to see it! BREAKING NEWS: Multiple sources have reported a minor monorail accident that occurred this afternoon at Walt Disney World on the express monorail track that runs from the Transportation & Ticket Center to the Magic Kingdom, which passes through the Contemporary resort.

The incident happened while the monorail was being towed during a test and there were no guests on board. Therefore, no injuries have been reported, thank goodness! It seems as though the front car of the monorail crashed with the tractor when the tow hitch broke during a planned downtime at approximately 1:00pm today. There is some damage to the front end of the monorail, including a broken windshield.

All monorail service on all 3 lines is still currently down as a result. A local Orlando news team sent a helicopter to check out the situation. See the footage and their news report by clicking the link here.

I recently stumbled across this fun and unique website called Gemr. Gemr is a social community for collectors to share, trade, and connect with others. We are hosting a $25 Disney Gift Card Giveaway with the gang at Gemr read on to learn how to enter.

I am a collector of classic Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney items from the 80’s on. I kick myself for not saving my toys growing up cause they would be worth a fortune today. As I mentioned Gemr is a social community for collectors. There are many different features for the users of Gemr. You can discuss the collections you have with others, learn more about the value or history of your collections and even connect with others who share the same passion as you! It’s so refreshing to connect with people who understand your love of Star Wars, Marvel and even Disney!

2015-11-18 11_15_05-Gemr

One of the best features of the site for me is that you can buy, sell and trade your collectibles. Unlike sites like Amazon or Ebay you can actually see how much an item is worth! I found a few items I used to play with when I was younger that were much cheaper than what people were listing on ebay.

GEMR also has social clubs to join.  There is a Disney Club, Star Wars, Marvel, and even a Tsum Tsum Club! Honestly there are too many to list. Of course, there are also many non-Disney affiliated clubs to join like Classic Gaming (One I am in), Anime, My Little Pony, Hello Kitty and many more!

GEMR is free to join. They have the website and an app so you can take them on the go.

I talked to the gang over at Gemr and for the next month we are going to give you a chance to win a $25 Disney Gift Card just for signing up. As I mentioned it is free to sign up and took me 2 seconds to link to my Facebook account to sign up.

They are going to be tracking all people who signup through one of the links above and will pick one lucky fan to win the $25 Disney Gift Card.

It is just that easy!

If you are looking for a fun community to connect with, maybe buy, sell or even trade some of your Disney items, or just want to talk about the things you are passionate about Gemr is the place to be!

P.S. – Make sure to also check out their Facebook & Twitter pages too! Be sure to tell them Chip sent ya!

Survivor’s Guide to Celebrating the Holidays at Walt Disney World

xmas
xmas

xmas

The magic of Disney is somehow extra special during the holidays.  There’s just something about the tall Christmas trees, the sparkling lights, the wreaths, and the overall feeling of the season that adds to the experience.  I mean, who can resist Santa Goofy or a super special Christmas version of Jungle Jingle Cruise?

But it is a well-known fact that Disney World plays host to thousands of families during the holidays, and there are days, particularly between Christmas and New Year’s, when the parks are filled to capacity.  Touring the parks will require planning, patience and perseverance (what other P words can I add to this alliteration?) in order to make the most out of your visit.  Here are some handy tips to consider so you can survive (and enjoy!) your holiday trip to Disney:

Tip #1: Know that there will be crowds.  Yes, the parks may be filled to capacity.  Yes, there will be long lines – for rides, for food, for character meet-and-greets, and at the stores.  Prepare yourself mentally for what’s ahead.  Know that despite the long waits and the overall size of the crowds, being at Disney for the holidays is still going to be an amazing, unforgettable experience.

Tip #2: Stay at a Walt Disney World resort.  As the parks reach capacity, there are certain Phased Closings that may be put in place.  As a guest staying at a Walt Disney World resort, you can still enter the park at certain phased closings while other non-resort guests are turned away.  Here are the phased closings:

  • Phase 1 Closure: entry is not permitted for guests with 1-day, 1-park base tickets, guests without an admission ticket (and are looking to purchase upon arrival), and guests using Cast Member passes.  You can still be admitted into the parks if:
    • You are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort
    • You are an annual pass holder
    • You have a park hopper ticket and are park hopping from another park
    • You are re-entering the park from an admission earlier in the day
    • You have a reservation or appointment in the parks (i.e. for Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique or Pirates League)
  • Phase 2 Closure: during a Phase 2 closure, you can be admitted into the parks if:
    • You are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort
    • You are an annual pass holder (certain categories apply)
    • You are re-entering the park from an admission earlier in the day
    • You have a park hopper ticket and are park hopping from another park
    • You have a reservation or appointment in the parks
  • Phase 3 Closure: during a Phase 3 closure, you can still be admitted to the parks if:
    • You are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort
    • You are an annual pass holder (certain categories apply)
    • You have a reservation or appointment in the parks
  • Phase 4 Closure: the park is closed to all guests entering the park.

Tip #3: Plan in advance.  If you are looking to just go with the flow on your vacation, holidays at Disney may not be the best time to do it.  Since there will be large crowds, lines will be long for the vast majority of rides.  If you have your heart set on going on a particular ride or doing a particular activity, plan accordingly.  Know which activities are must do’s, and which ones can be done for a different trip.  Use FastPass+ to go on your favorite rides, and make appointments well in advance for your favorite restaurants.  This also goes back to Tip #2 – if you are staying at a Walt Disney World resort, you can plan more in advance compared to non-resort guests.

Tip #4: Arrive early to the parks.  Phased closures can happen as early as 10:00 am,  so it pays off to be at the parks right at opening or earlier.  This gives you the best chance to ride the rides with the least wait times, and it also reduces the possibility that you won’t be able to enter the park due to closure.  This also goes back to Tip #2 – Disney resort guests can enjoy the added perk of Extra Magic Hours, where the parks open exclusively for resort guests an hour before the posted park opening times on certain days.  If you are not an early bird, you can also…

Tip #5: Stay late at the parks.  If getting up early on vacation is not your thing, maybe staying up late is!  Crowds generally diminish as you get further into the evening hours, so you can also do most of your activities then.  There are also Extra Magic Hours in the evening where resort guests can stay at the parks past the posted park closing times for the general public.

Tip #6: Consider eating at off-peak hours.  Dining at the park restaurants, whether it is table service or quick service, will take longer than usual during the holidays.  To avoid the rush, try going at off-peak hours (before 11:00 am or after 2:00 pm for lunch; before 4:00 pm or after 8:30 pm for dinner).  Bringing snacks and drinks into the parks is allowed, so you can always have a stash handy to get you through the day as well!

Tip #7: Use your resources.  If this is your first time going to Disney during the holidays, use all of your resources here at Chip & Co.  We have members at our Facebook groups who have done this trip many times over and can give useful advice.  There are also lots of articles on our site so you’ll know everything you need to know before your trip.  If you are using one of our travel agents from World of Magic Travel, pick their brain!  They will be able to tell you the tricks and tips to enable you to have a wonderful vacation.

Tip #8: The Disney holiday spirit is alive and vibrant outside the parks, too.  If you are not able to get into the parks, or don’t want to craziness of the crowds, there is plenty to see and do at Disney outside of the four theme parks.  Did you know that there is an amazing Gingerbread House and other edible displays at the Grand Floridian, Beach Club, and BoardWalk Inn?  Or have you ever seen the larger-than-life Christmas tree at the Wilderness Lodge?  All the resorts have something unique to offer, so it’s a great time to go resort hopping.  And don’t forget Downtown Disney, which also has some amazing things to offer during the holidays.

Tip #9: Enjoy being at Disney during the holidays!  Yes, it will be crowded, and you probably will have less personal space than you’d like, but at the end of the day, you are at Disney!  You can look at the castle with its twinkling lights, enjoy the decorations and atmosphere, feel a chill in the Orlando weather, listen to stirring Disney scores that will give you goosebumps, and celebrate the holidays with those you love.  I guarantee it will be an unforgettable experience!

With that, I will turn it over to you, our dear readers.  What tips do you have for guests going to Disney this holiday season?  Tell me what I’ve missed!  Sound off in the comments below!

Digital Disney Gift Cards Now Accepted at Walt Disney World

As of yesterday guests at the Walt Disney World Resort can now use digital Disney Gift Cards as a method of payment at select retail and dining locations.  This new gift card will work just like the standard plastic gift cards.  The digital gift card will need to be loaded onto a wallet application of their choice such as Go Wallet, Gyft or Passbook.  We are hearing that these digital Disney Gift Cards can be used at any location a plastic gift card can be used but haven’t had a chance to check it out for ourselves yet.

And coming soon (very soon according to our information), guests will be able to download a new wallet application, YuDo by Disney, that can be used with these digital Disney Gift Cards as well. This new app will allow parents to see where and how their children are shopping.

A few things to keep in mind about these digital Disney Gift Cards:

  • The plastic gift card must still be purchased and then added onto the app of your choice to use.
  • Digital gift cards should be redeemed in the same way plastic gift cards are currently used; Cast Members will scan the barcode on your wallet app to complete your transaction.
  • Digital Disney Gift Cards can be used in conjunction with any discounts available, including Cast Member and Passholder discounts.

Are you excited about this new way to pay at the Walt Disney World Resort? Will you be trying out the new digital Disney Gift Cards?  Let us know how the process goes for you if you do!

There are always new things happening at the Walt Disney World Resort.  Make sure you are always “in the know” as you are planning your trips.  That’s where I come in!  I am a Travel Magician with World of Magic Travel, the preferred agency of Chip and Co and the Disney Addicts! All Star Movies at Walt Disney is under evacuation

Reports are coming in there is an evacuation going on at All Star Movies Resort in Walt Disney World. Apparently the Police have evacuated the lobby area according to Twitter meanwhile some guests are being directed to turn around and not enter the facility at all.

All buses and services are shut down and there are guests stranded in their room presently.

Update 7:54pm EST:

Guest have been given the all clear at 7:08 pm and allowed to enter the resort and exit their rooms.

Osceola County Sheriff’s Office along with Disney’s Security took the lead in the investigation and reported that it was a false alarm.

All of the reports on twitter have been from everything from a gas leak, fire alarm/drill to a bomb threat. If it was a gas leak would local law enforcement been called in?

With the terrorist attack in France everyone is on heightened alert. Not matter what I reason I am glad this was handled promptly and without incident.

Update 11/18.2015:

It was reported that it was a bomb scare and it was limited to the lobby. The police and bomb sniffing dogs were deployed but nothing was found.
