‘Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival’ Opens Today at Epcot

Short Film

Today is the debut of ‘Disney & Pixar Short Firm Festival’ in Epcot’s Future World that we announced last month.

This 3D experience will give viewers a glimpse of the visionary minds that have created some of the well known animated movies today. The festival includes three short films: “Get a Horse”, “For the Birds”, and “La Luna”.

“Get a Horse” features Walt Disney providing the voice of Mickey Mouse. The film follows Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Clarabelle Cow, and Horace Horsecollar on a musical wagon ride when Peg-leg Pete shows up and tries to ruin the ride.

“For the Birds” begins with small flocks of birds landing on a telephone wire. When a large dopey bird shows up the clique make fun of him – but things don’t go as they planned.

“La Luan” features a young boy going to work for the first time with his Papa and Grandpa. They row their old wooden boat out into the middle of the sea and wait. Eventually the boy is surprised when he finds out his family’s unusual line of work. He is faced with a decision: does he follow his family’s old tradition or make a way for himself?

The festival is located in the Magic Eye Theater in the Imagination Pavilion, former home of “Captain EO“.  Stop by to be inspired by the creative minds at the heart of Disney.

How to Keep Your Kids from Having a Meltdown at Disney World

meltdowns
meltdowns

meltdowns

Kids, especially toddlers, can be especially temperamental and therefore can be known to throw a tantrum for no reason at the drop of a hat. Believe me, as the mom of an 18 month old, I know all about tantrums. To avoid these types at the parks there are a few simple tips to keep in mind and “rules” to follow – after all you don’t want your kids to be the ones screaming in the middle of Magic Kingdom because they “just don’t want to”. Here are 8 simple rules to follow to keep your little ones happy and avoid meltdowns at Walt Disney World.

  • Drink Lots of Water – Staying hydrated is incredibly important for everyone while at the parks, but it is especially important for your little ones. A thirsty little one is a grumpy little one, and soon a grumpy little one is a cranky little one that doesn’t want to stand in line for that ride, even though they love it, and will soon be throwing an all-out tantrum. A great way to ensure that your little ones stay hydrated is to allow them to have their own water bottles. Water fountains are located all over the parks, so you should never be without water.
  • Snacks – Hungry little ones also start to become grumpy little ones. Keeping small snacks in your park, so that you can have them with you in line since it is always when hunger strikes, is a great way to ensure that your little Prince or Princess doesn’t turn into a Beast. Crackers, Goldfish, sliced fruit and/or veggies, and granola bars are great healthy snack options that will tide your little one over ‘til the next meal and don’t take up too much room in your park bag.
  • Keep Cool – We all get grumpy when we’re hot, but keeping your little ones cool can also keep everyone happy. Make sure that your kids aren’t over dressed, this is the first step in keeping cool. After a few hours those princess dresses can start to get hot and scratchy, so bringing an extra set of clothes can help to keep your little princess cool. Mister fans can be found throughout the parks, but they can be pricey, you can pick one up from the Dollar Store and bring it with you. Taking advantage of the splash zones and water rides throughout the parks is another great way to keep cool, but be sure to bring an extra set of clothes so that they aren’t cold after these experiences.
  • Avoid Tired Feet – A Walt Disney World vacation involves A LOT of walking, we’re talking miles upon miles, and this amount of walking leads to tired feet. A little one with overly tired feet is a grumpy and soon to meltdown little one. A great way to avoid this is to have a stroller with you so that your little ones can get off their feet for a while. You can bring your own stroller with you or you can rent a stroller from Disney or an outside company if you don’t want to deal with having a stroller in the airport.
  • Nap Time – If your little one still takes naps allowing them to take a nap during the day while at Disney will make it so that you can avoid meltdowns. Keeping nap time around the same as it is at home is best. An afternoon nap back at your resorts is a great option, it also allows for some pool time and an escape from the afternoon heat and crowds. If you don’t want to leave the parks for nap time a stroller is also a great place to take an afternoon nap.
  • Small Toys for Lines – Bringing small toys or books for you little ones to play with in line will keep your kids happy and avoid tantrums over long lines.
  • Avoid Sugar Crash – Sweets are pretty much inevitable, after all there are so many amazingly delicious treats available in the parks and at the resorts. However, ensuring that healthy snacks and meals are eaten will help to avoid a sugar crash and grumpiness.
  • Burn off Energy – Allow your little ones to burn off some energy in the afternoon. After standing in lines all morning they need to stretch their little legs. There are some amazing places to let your kids have some fun and for the adults to sit down for a while – or you can get in on the action and play, too!

Did we miss one? How do you keep your little ones from having a meltdown at the parks? Let us know in the comments!

Things You Can Get for Free at the Disneyland Resort

DLR Free 1
DLR Free 1

DLR Free

Vacationing at the Disneyland Resort can get pretty pricey. I’m always looking for ways to save money on my trip or ways to make it more memorable without having to spend more. There are quite a few things that you can get for free at the Disneyland Resort. Check out this list for your next trip:

Jungle Cruise Map

When you get off of the Jungle Cruise, ask a cast member for a cool free map. Most cast members know about the maps and will get you one if you ask. I have heard that sometimes they make you tell a joke or do a trick in exchange for the map.

Souvenir Buttons

Are you celebrating something while at the resort? There’s most likely a button for that! The most common buttons are birthday buttons, first visit buttons and “I’m Celebrating” buttons. You can pick up the buttons at City Hall on Main Street. If you’re celebrating your birthday, definitely get a button! Cast members and even other guests will wish you happy birthday throughout the day.

Mark Twain Riverboat Pilot Certificate

If you get the opportunity to ride in the wheelhouse and pilot the Mark Twain Riverboat, you’ll be awarded with a pilot certificate at the end of the ride. It’s a great souvenir to remember that special experience!

The Buena Vista Bugle

Disney California Adventure has it’s own newspaper called The Buena Vista Bugle. You can pick one up at the Fiddler, Fifer & Practical Café. It has all kinds of  fun news and information about the park.

Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters Ride Photo

Most ride photos cost you money. Not this one! When you exit Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters head to the photo screens and find your picture. You can then email it to yourself for free!

Replacement Balloon

If you purchase a balloon at the Disneyland Resort and it pops, they will replace it for free! Cast members will replace other broken merchandise as well as dropped ice cream. We got a free spray bottle/fan when our first one stopped working. Gotta love Disney magic!

Lilly Belle Ticket

Riding the Lilly Belle is a rare and exciting experience. If you are lucky enough to get to ride, you’ll also get a nifty ticket as a souvenir.

Autographs

Bring a book, photo matt, piece of fabric…etc, and have it autographed by all of your favorite characters for free! We took an encyclopedia of characters and each character loved signing their very own page.

Water

Don’t bother buying bottles of water in the parks! You can get ice water for free at most counter service restaurants. Or bring in your own water bottle from home and fill it up at the water fountains throughout the parks.

Photos

Be sure to bring your camera to the parks with you. There are tons of great photo opportunities! Take pictures in front of iconic landmarks and with favorite Disney characters. The PhotoPass photographers will take your picture for you with both their camera and yours for free.

How Much Does it Cost to go to Walt Disney World

disney world cost
disney world cost

disney world cost

No two Walt Disney World vacations are exactly alike, and because of this no two vacations to this magical place cost exactly the same. A lot of different factors go into both planning and taking a Disney vacation and each of these factors can and will affect the cost of a trip. Let’s go over what some of these factors are which should help to give you an idea of what is options are right for you and your family; and find out just how much it actually costs to take a Walt Disney World vacation.

  • Number of People – The first questions that you need to ask yourself is how many people are traveling? It will obviously cost more for a party of five, or even more, to visit than for a party of two. While the cost per person will be less for the room portion of the package with more people, the overall cost of the room does increase with each person age 18 or older. Most rooms on property can accommodate 4-5 adults, though, so if you have a larger traveling party you may end up having to reserve more than one room. There are however rooms at some resorts that can accommodate up to 6 adults! Where to stay will is another factor that is mentioned later in the post.
  • Number of Nights – How many days and nights are you going to spend at Disney World? The number of nights is important because the hotel portion of your package is charged by nights. Also, if you choose to purchase the dining plan, it is also charged per night of your stay. The main, and perhaps most important question to ask yourself is, how many days do you want to spend at the parks? There are four theme parks and you need at least one day for each park to be able to experience it all. So, a good rule of thumb is to take at least four days to spend in the parks.
  • When You Travel – The time of year also plays a big part in the overall cost of your trip. Although there aren’t really times of the year when the parks are less crowded anymore, there are times when the costs for a room skyrockets. It is exponentially cheaper to visit during the “off-season” which is September, January, February. The most expensive time to go is by far December, especially around Christmas. The day of the week also influences the cost. It will cost slightly less per night during the week and slightly more for weekend nights.
  • Where You Stay – Where you stay is another HUGE factor. There at over 20 different resorts on Disney property – each has its only style, and there are different price levels. Value Resorts are budget friendly – averaging about $100 a night – and have colorful, kid friendly themes. Also in this category is the Art of Animation Resort which boasts family suites that sleep up to 6, these are about $200 a night. Moderate Resorts offer a quiet place to relax when compared to the value resorts. The rooms at these resorts are also slightly bigger and can sleep up to 5 – they average about $200 a night. Deluxe Resorts offer a signature restaurant and three of these resorts are on the monorail loop. These resorts are for those that wish to splurge on their vacation and can range from around $300 (Wilderness Lodge) to almost $600 a night (Grand Floridian) during the off season. There are also suites and villas which can sleep more people, but will also cost you more per night. Lastly, there is the Fort Wilderness Resort with cabins and campgrounds. The Cabins can sleep up to 6 adults and offer a full kitchen, these cabins average about $300 per night. The campgrounds at Fort Wilderness are available for those with RVs, but also for tent camping. The tent campgrounds average about $50 per night. There is also the option of staying offsite, but the cost is actually comparable to staying onsite, but without all of the benefits that staying at a Disney resorts offers.
  • Park Tickets – Park tickets are incredibly important and making the decision on which type of ticket is right for you requires some thought. Here are some things to consider: How many days of park tickets do you want? You do not have to go to the parks every day, you can spent the day at Disney Springs or your resort – you can relax and take a rest day. You do not have to purchase a park ticket for everyday of your trip. However, the more days you have tickets for the cheaper it is per day. A 4 day park ticket is $326.23 per person. If you add one more day it will only cost you $10.50 more per person. So, don’t hesitate to add another day! Another question to ask yourself is whether you want the ability to go to more than one park on any given day. To be able to “Park Hop” you need a park hopper ticket. To add this option will cost between $53.25 for a 2-3 day park ticket and $68.16 for 4-10 days per ticket/person. If you want to be able to go to the water parks you will need the Water Parks Fun & More Ticket – with this ticket you can visit the two Disney Water Parks, but not park hop. This ticket will cost you $68.16 for 2-10 days per ticket/person. To be able to Park Hop and visit the water parks you will need a Park Hopper and Water Parks Fun & More Option which will cost $95.85 per ticket/person. Remember, these numbers are in addition to the base ticket price.
  • Food – Dining is another big and important part of the trip, after all, you need energy to be able to spend all day getting from ride to ride. Disney World also has TONS of amazing food that is hard to deny. There are a few different options for you to consider when it comes to dining. You can have food delivered to your resort hotel room from a local grocery store and prepare your own food and bring it into the parks. You can pay for all of your meals and snacks, there are so many delicious treats, out of pocket. This option gives you the ability to budget exactly how much you will spend, but it also may limit your dining locations if you are looking to save money. How much you are going to spend depends on a lot of factors like dining location, number of people, and your appetite. It will most likely cost at least $60 per adult per day. Lastly, Disney offers three different dining plans. These plans allow you to pre-pay for all of your meals beforehand, so you don’t have to worry when you are at the parks. Each dining plans has its own rules. The Quick Service Dining Plan (2 quick service meals, 1 snack per person per day) will cost you $42.84 per adult and $17.47 per child (3-9) per day. The Regular or Plus Dining Plan (1 table service meal, 1 quick service meal, 1 snack per person per day) with cost you $61.84 per adult and $20.96 per child per day. The Deluxe Dining Plan, which is what my family gets (3 meals of any combination of table service and quick service and two snacks per person per day) will cost you $111.79 per adult and $32.56 per child per day. Each per person will also receive a refillable mug on all three dining plans.
  • Souvenirs – You can’t returned home from a Disney vacation without at least one thing to remember it by. Souvenirs, which can include anything from pins to Mickey hats, to toys and ride photos, can really set you back if you’re not careful. I personally think that $100 per person is a good amount for the total time of your vacation. A great way to limit your souvenir spending is to use Disney gift cards for this purpose, especially for kids. You can get anything you want as long as you have the money for it, but once the gift card is empty, that’s all you have. Your family’s personal budget for souvenirs is up to you, though, you may want to spend more or less.
  • Tipping – Tips are highly encouraged for Mousekeeping (the resort hotel housekeeping) and servers at table service restaurants. The recommended amount for Mousekeeping is $2-5 per day. This ensures that the person cleaning your room on each, it could change each day, is receiving the tip. As for tipping at table service restaurants I truly believe that the amount you tip should be based on the service that you receive. If you are on the dining plan, and have less than 6 people, gratuity is not included and a tip is expected. When the receipt is brought to your table a suggested tip will be printed on it. You do not have to tip the 18-20% if you did not receive service that deserves it. But if you got exceptional service you can always tip more than what is listed. The total amount spent in tips will vary from party to party.
  • Extras – There are some extras that can be added to your trip that should be taken into consideration. These include travel insurance which will run you $77.50 per adult. Memory Maker, which allows you to download all of your PhotoPass photos, is great it you love to take photos with characters. This extra costs $169 if purchased at the parks, however, if you add memory maker to your package at least 3 days before your trip you will save $30.
  • Transportation – Transportation is the last factor and it is hard to get a firm number for this one because circumstances differ for each traveling party. Will you be driving – if so will you need to stop for a night or more along the way? If so an extra hotel cost needs to be factored in as well as the price of gas to get your car there. Will you be flying? The cost for a flight can change countless times from the time it is listed until it actually takes off. So the price you will pay for a flight will depend where you’re flying from, how many people are flying, and when you book the flight. A short domestic flight (3 hours or less) will cost at its lowest probably around $100 per person one way, but a cross country flight, round trip, could cost you $300. If you’re flying internationally the price could be exponentially higher.

Keep in mind that throughout the year there are discounts that include free dining or up 30% of rooms – these could impact your cost in a good way if your trip falls during the time that they are taking place.

I just gave you a ton of information, I know… but what does it all actually equate to?

For a couple to spend 5 nights at the All-Star Movies Resort in January with a 5-day 1 park per day ticket, $200 total for souvenirs, no extras, $100 in tips, flights totaling $300, and paying for dining out of pocket it would cost $1816.12.

If that same couple spent those 5 nights at the Wilderness Lodge in January with a 5-day Park Hopper, Deluxe Dining Plan, $200 total for souvenirs, $200 in tips, Memory Maker, and flights totaling $300 it would cost $4493.98.

These same trips for a family of four (2 adults, 2 children one under 10 and one over 10) would cost $4018.58 for the cheaper option and $6504.21 for the second, more expensive option. (Obviously the amount spent on souvenirs would increase to $400 and flights would increase to $600 because there is now double the amount of people.) Prices could be higher or low based on personal preferences and available discounts.

9 Mistakes to Avoid When Planning a Disney Vacation

9 mistakes
9 mistakes

9 mistakes

Disney World is supposed to be the most magical place in the world, right? Then why do you hear about people not enjoying their Disney vacation or going there once and feeling like that was enough? I believe, as most Disney Addicts do, that all of the people who didn’t enjoy their Disney vacation just didn’t do it right!

Disney is AMAZING and everyone who leaves should be sad to go and look forward to coming back. So, where did the others go wrong? If you want to have a magical trip to Walt Disney World, I think these 9 things need to be avoided.

Here are my Top 9 Disney Vacation Mistakes.

1.Lack of Planning – I don’t think there is any vacation in the world where the phrase “Failing to plan is planning to fail” more than at Walt Disney World.  I know people who thought Disney World was ok, but didn’t really care to go back; when talking to them I learned they didn’t know what FastPass+ was, they stayed off site, they did not use the dining plan or have their trip properly budgeted. The more planning you do before your trip, the more you are able to relax and enjoy while you are on the trip.

2.Over-planning – I know this might sound like the exact opposite of what I suggested in #1, but you must leave room for spontaneity. You can’t predict every amazing little surprise that might arise at Disney World. If you try to plan every minute of your day you are going to end up exhausted, frazzled, and disappointed. My advice is to talk to each person in your group and find out what their one or two “must-do” things are for the day. It could be a ride, a special snack or a show, and then plan those into your day. Plan what area of the park you are going to hit in what order, but do not plan everything. Know the important things and then go with the flow the rest of the time. Most people will not have fun if they are running from one spot to the next trying to fit it all in.

3. Not utilizing FastPass+ – People who spend a lot of time waiting in lines for rides at Disney World did not plan properly. The longest I have ever waited is 45 minutes and the majority of the time it is 20 minutes or less. If you don’t know what a FastPass+ is, read about it here. Do a little research to find out what rides are best to use your FastPass+ on. For example, at Magic Kingdom, Seven Dwarf Mine Train and Peter Pan are rides you definitely want to get a FastPass+ for in order to avoid a long wait, or arrive at park opening and hustle right back to the line first thing.

4. Pushing children past the breaking point – I have three little girls and as much as I hate to take a break in the middle of our exciting day at one of the Disney parks, I have learned the hard way (several times) that we NEED to plan for breaks. We go early when the crowds are lighter, break after lunch back at our hotel (one reason I love staying onsite), and hit the park again in the late afternoon or early evening. It’s important to take the break before your children are pushed past their breaking point. Once they are crying, irritated, and melting down it is much harder to regain control of the day, than if you preplan a time to rest outside of the parks.

5. Going at the wrong time – If you hate crowds with a passion or get anxiety being surrounded by a ton of people, then going to Disney World for spring break or the holidays is a mistake. If you hate being in hot humid weather, then going to Disney in July and August is going to be rough (trust me, I went in August when I was extremely pregnant). Do some research to find out what time of the year at Disney makes the most sense for your family. What weather will you enjoy the most? What events do you want to participate in? Do you love Christmas but hate a crowd? Then try going to Disney World in mid-November when you can go to Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party before the crazy holiday crowds start to show up. A little research goes a long way here.

6. Not utilizing Advanced Dining Reservations (ADRs)– If you are staying at a Disney property you can make dining reservations 180 days in advance, and there are some restaurants that if  you miss the 180 day reservation mark you might not get the reservation you were hoping for. Disney World is not a place that you can just show up to and wait 10 minutes to be seating at any restaurants you want. The dates for my last Disney trip were planned much later than normal and we struggled to get reservations that we wanted and had to make some compromises because some of them just didn’t come through.

7. Not budgeting correctly – Let’s be honest… Disney World is expensive. It’s an amazing vacation, but it does come at a cost. And, if you don’t really  know what that cost is, you might not have the best time. Do a little research to find ways to save and check promotions. Make sure that you budget and plan for extras, that way if something unexpected comes up or you just really want to buy that Mickey and Minnie salt and pepper shaker, you can without breaking your budget. If you plan on eating at some of the delicious restaurants throughout Disney property, remember to budget in money for a tip (and if you are using the Dining plan remember that gratuity is not included) and to tip your mousekeeper each day. Once you set a realistic budget stick to it so you don’t have vacation regrets once you get home.

8. Choosing the wrong hotel or staying offsite – I am a big believer of staying on property. Can you save money by staying somewhere else? Maybe. Is it worth it? Not in my opinion. Staying at a Disney hotel gives you a heap of advantages that you can’t get anywhere else: Magical Express, Disney transportation (monorail, buses, boats), Extra Magic Hours, and earlier ADRs and FastPass+ times. But, my favorite perk is the ease of going back and forth to your hotel. There are other locations that offer transportation to Disney parks, but it is no where near as convenient as the Disney transportation. You have shorter commute times, the buses come much more frequently, and you are dropped off and picked up at much better locations closer to the park entrances. There are so many great resorts to choose from and the theming is different at each one. You should spend a little time researching each option to find which hotel your family will love.

9. Not letting go – Take Elsa’s advice here. When your vacation begins and you get to Disney World, just let it go. The magic of Disney has a way of coming in and taking away all the stress of “real life”. Don’t worry about all the things you spend your everyday worrying about. Just have fun. Act like a kid again. Skip and jump, hug your favorite character and get excited when you see Cinderella Castle. Allow the magic of the place to take over and enjoy Disney the way a child does. Drop your guard and don’t worry about what the other people around you are thinking, just let it go!

Have fun putting in the planning time and have a magical trip to Walt Disney World! “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has been the weekend’s topic of conversation.  From the lines at the mall to the social media pages, everyone is talking about the story line, merchandise or their love / hate of the latest film.   But nothing is speaking louder than the box office numbers, the film has brought in for opening weekend.    Coming in as the biggest North American debut, Star Wars:  The Force Awakens topped the record breaking charts at $238 million over the weekend. The record held by Universal’s Jurassic World at almost $209 this summer was a high mark to match, but the film met and surpassed it with ease.

Perhaps it was the hype and lockdown by the studios, that gave it the extra push or the fact that fans have been waiting a long time for this seventh installment.    But I would venture to say that the deciding factor was the amazing and incredible work by all involved in this film which has turned it into an instant fan favorite and has many (my son included) on their 3rd or 4th viewing this weekend.  Audiences were predominantly male however, Daily Ridley’s role and the Star Wars attraction brought in a fair share of females and teens to the seats.

The first in the new trilogy of the next Star Wars adventures,  The Force Awakens takes us to a galaxy far, far away where the Resistance (good guys) and First Order (bad guys) are battling it out for power. The disappearance of Luke Skywalker and the changes in the galaxy bring a group of favorite and new characters together in an adventure that will have you on the edge of your seat. Evil villian – Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), along with Han Solo (Harrison Ford), Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) and R2D2 (Kenny Baker) and newcomers, Rey (Daisy Ridley), Ex-Stormtropper Finn (John Boyega), X-wing pilot, Poe (Oscar Isaac) give stellar performances. Under the direction of JJ Abrams, the film will continue to burst through and dominate the box office numbers for weeks to come.

The question left to be asked is not have you seen the film, but how many times have you or will you see it this holiday season?   Comment below and follow us on www.chipandco.com for more Star Wars and Disney news, updates and promotions!

Where does wireless work the Best at Walt Disney World

Wireless service at Walt Disney World is always a debate. Some people love it and some people hate it. I have noticed it is one of those hit or miss things. Recently a study was published detailing the wireless coverage areas in the parks by Global Wireless Solutions. There are 4 major wireless carriers, out of those Sprint had the worst coverage. AT&T had the best coverage. Verizon is second and T-mobile ranked number 3.

They focused mainly on the Magic Kingdom.

The Magic Kingdom averages nearly 53,000 daily visitors making it the most visited theme park in the world. All of these happy and excited visitors in one venue can really stress the wireless operators’ networks. Can you imagine the impact as visitors throughout the day are energetically tapping away on their mobile devices to share their experiences of the park with their friends and family via social networks, whether it’s Instagram or Snapchat. GWS performed multiple social media simulation tests to gauge the experiences visitors could expect, whether they want to just send a tweet or live stream their visit via Periscope. Findings include:

  • AT&T was ranked as the best network for visitors that want to browse their social feeds, which can be one of the most common social media activities for users while they’re waiting in line for the next ride – clicking on links in Facebook or general browsing in Instagram and Twitter
  • AT&T and Verizon tied top for the best operators for tweeting (without images or video) your way through your magical visit, though all carriers performed admirably on simulations for status updates on sites like Facebook and Twitter
  • Verizon was the most robust network for sharing a selfie or video via social media, edging out AT&T for the top spot for uploading a selfie on social media sites such as Instagram and Snapchat
  • AT&T was by far the best network for downloading heavy streaming media. For parents turning to Netflix or YouTube videos to calm down a little one or when stuck waiting for the kids to get off the rides, those with

    LAND-BY-LAND COMPARISON

GWS tested a range of key indicators for mobile performance in developing these rankings- including download speed, upload speed and task success reliability. These metrics were combined to determine both the overall mobile experience for visitors of the park and a land-by-land comparison. The latter
