5 New Things We’ll See at Disney World in 2016

Things seem to always be changing at Walt Disney World, and we’re anticipating many changes ahead.  While we’ll have to keep waiting for the promised new “lands” of Avatar and Star Wars, there are some events, dining, updates, and expansions that will appear in 2016.  Spring is going to see Walt Disney World blossoming with newness!

  1. Animal Kingdom expands to nighttime – many people still think of Animal Kingdom as a half-day park, and the early closing times didn’t help to change that idea, but while we’ve been promised for a long time that changes would be coming, in the Spring of 2016, we will finally be able to see Animal Kingdom’s Rivers of Light show on the Discovery River (right out in front of Expedition Everest).  Animal Kingdom is also going to offer a nighttime version of Kilimanjaro Safaris, which will include animals we don’t see during the day.  The new signature restaurant, Tiffins, is opening in 2016 as well. So, be prepared to expand your thinking about Animal Kingdom.
  2. Frozen Ever After comes to Epcot – while there are some mixed feelings about this replacement for Maelstrom in the Norway pavilion of the World Showcase at Epcot, there is also a lot of curiosity and anticipation.  Will Frozen Ever After live up to the hype?  Will it be able to stand the test of time and fickle affections?  We will find out in Spring of 2016. And along with the much-wondered-about ride, there will be a new meet and greet location with Frozen characters in the Norway pavilion as well.
  3. More eateries and shopping locations at Disney Springs – we may still be getting used to the idea of Downtown Disney being Disney Springs, but it’s growing and changing before our eyes. The long awaited STK Steakhouse will open, along with several other restaurants – some inspired by chefs Rick Bayless and Art Smith, and we can look forward to Blaze Fast Fire’d Pizza, The Edison (also rumored for a long time), and Sprinkles. Along with these additions, Another section of Disney Springs, the Town Center area, will be finished and will have lots of shopping options.
  4. Star Wars Half Marathon – The Dark Side – Star Wars weekends may be gone, but fans of the galaxy far, far away needn’t worry that there’s nothing to keep their interest until Star Wars Land is built. Spring 2016 will see the debut of a new race weekend, to include kids’ races, a 5K, 10K, and half marathon. The Star Wars Half Marathon at Disneyland is now known as The Light Side, and Walt Disney World gets the honor of the Dark Side. Look for this in mid-April.
  5. Soarin’ will fly around the world – Epcot’s Soarin’ attraction is a guest favorite, but fans will have to do without it for several months. It’s set to close in early January, and re-open with new destinations in Summer 2016. This update will not only change the scenery viewed in the popular attraction, but will also add a third theater, which may help reduce wait times.

So, those are the top 5 things I’m looking forward to at Disney World in 2016. If I missed your favorite, tell us about it!

I’m Jeri, and I’m a Disney Addict!  I’m also an Independent Travel Agent with World of Magic Travel Services, the preferred travel agency of Chip and Co. and Disney Addicts.  I am always happy to offer my free services to you to help make your next vacation a little more magical! The magic of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration came to life as a float in the 127th Rose Parade, broadcast live from Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 1, 2016. The parade started off at 8 a.m. (PST) with the theme “Find Your Adventure,” and the Disneyland Resort float honors some of the most exciting adventures awaiting guests at the Happiest Place on Earth.

At the heart of the float was a sparkling recreation of Sleeping Beauty Castle, complete with Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse welcoming everyone to the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration. Flanking the castle are two adventures that are brought to life at the Disneyland Resort. The first comes from the world of “Frozen” and depicts Elsa’s ice castle – straight out of Arendelle – accompanied by Anna, Elsa, Olaf and Kristoff. A separate adventure depicted on the float makes the jump to hyperspace and travels to a galaxy far, far away for a thrilling adventure dedicated to the Star Wars films and exciting new Star Wars experiences at Disneyland Park.

Since its premiere in spring 2015, the 60th Anniversary Diamond Celebration has thrilled resort guests with sparking décor and spectacular entertainment, including the after-dark “Paint the Night” parade, “Disneyland Forever” fireworks and “World of Color – Celebrate!’ The celebration will continue to dazzle Disneyland Resort guests through Sept. 5, 2016.

Since the blockbuster success of the Disney animated motion picture “Frozen” in 2013, Disneyland Resort guests have enjoyed multiple opportunities to relive the adventures of Anna and Elsa – in character encounters at Disney California Adventure Park, on floats in “Mickey’s Soundsational Parade” and “Paint the Night” in Disneyland, in a live “Frozen” show at Fantasy Faire in Disneyland, and in a “Frozen” sing-along celebration. An all-new “Frozen”-inspired stage musical will open in summer 2016 in the Hyperion Theater at Disney California Adventure.

The recent debut of Season of the Force in Tomorrowland at Disneyland has taken guests into the Star Wars galaxy with new experiences as well as enhancements to popular attractions. Star Wars Launch Bay immerses guests in familiar Star Wars-inspired locations where they may encounter favorite characters, take a peek behind-the-scenes of the Star Wars films, and find special exhibits and collectibles. Hyperspace Mountain and a new Star Tours destination from Star Wars: The Force Awakens take guests on thrilling journeys. Additional highlights include “Star Wars: Path of the Jedi,” a short film connecting iconic scenes from the Star Wars saga, and a reimagined “Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple” show featuring new characters and a new villain. Star Wars fans are anxiously awaiting the Dec. 18 release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, as well as the new Star Wars-themed land coming to both Disneyland and Walt Disney World resorts. Work on the new land will begin in 2016.

1_16_DL_000684-640x420

The appearance of the Disneyland Resort Diamond Celebration float in the 2016 Rose Parade marks the continuation of a tradition Disney relationship with the Tournament of Roses that began in 1938.

  • The relationship began when characters from the newly premiered “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (1937) were prominently featured in the parade.
  • Each year since 1960, the Rose Queen and her Royal Court, along with the competing Rose Bowl football teams, have visited Disneyland Resort.
  • In 1966, Walt Disney served as Grand Marshall of the parade. Roy E. Disney, Walt’s nephew and the head of Disney Animation, served as Grand Marshall in 2000. Members of the Disney creative team from Walt Disney Imagineering and Disney Entertainment have served as float judges numerous times.
  • In 2004, Disneyland Resort presented “A Sudden Drop in Pitch.” At the time, it was the tallest float in Rose Parade history (110 feet, with live performers at the top). The float’s title played off that year’s theme of “Music, Music, Music,” and the float was inspired by The Twilight Zone™ Tower of Terror” attraction, which opened in Disney California Adventure that spring.
  • In 2005, the 50th Anniversary of Disneyland was celebrated with both a dazzling Rose Parade Opening Show and a spectacular castle float called “The Happiest Celebration on Earth.” Mickey Mouse served as Grand Marshall.
  • In 2006, the longest float (150 feet) in Rose Parade history, entitled “The Most Magical Celebration on Earth,” celebrated Disney Parks around the world.
  • In 2013, the characters and fun of Cars Land raced into Pasadena for “Destination: Cars Land,” a float showcasing the landmarks of the newly opened land in Disney California Adventure. The 125-foot long float featured replicas of Lightning McQueen and Sally recreating their fun-spirited road race from the first “Cars” movie. Mater, the tow truck, followed along behind the float.
  • In addition to Rose Parade float entries, Disney has presented many Rose Parade Opening Shows through the years, celebrating such milestones as the 35th Anniversary of Disneyland in 1990, the debut of the Indiana Jones Adventure in Disneyland in 1995, and the motion picture premiere of “Fantasia 2000,” in 2000.

Disney/Pixar’s upcoming new film, Finding Dory brings back many of our favorites.  Starting with the star of the film, Dory (Ellen DeGeneres) and her friends, Marlin (Albert Brookes) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence).   Finding Dory will also introduce new characters.   Two additions, Bailey (Ty Burrell), the beluga whale and Destiny (Kaitlin Olson),  the whale shark, like Dory, have their own quirks.  Bailey has a problem with his sonar capabilities and Destiny, well just can’t seem to swim straight.

Finding Dory, which comes to theaters June 17, 2016, also features the voices of Diane Keaton and Eugene Levy as Dory’s parents.  Bringing fans of Nemo and the gang an all new adventure, Finding Dory takes place six months after Finding Nemo, when Dory suddenly remembers bits and pieces of her past.   When she recalls “the jewel of Monterey” as part of her childhood, she decides to set out to find her family.  Along with Nemo and Marlin, the trio arrive at the Monterey Marine Life Institute where she meets, Hank the octopus who becomes her guide.   There she will become friends Bailey and Destiny and together old and new friends, discover Dory’s family history.

Disney·Pixar’s “Finding Dory” swims into theaters June 17, 2016.  This is one film, I will camp out for weeks to see.  Follow all the news and updates on www.chipandco.com and don’t miss Finding Dory in theaters this summer.

Big Changes Coming to Air Travel in 2016

2016 changes

At some point in the upcoming year, residents of many states will no longer be able to use their Driver’s License as identification at the airports, even if traveling WITHIN the USA.  The Department of Homeland Security will begin to enforce the 10-year-old Real ID Act, which set new regulations for sufficient identification for air travel.  International travelers are accustomed to using their passports for international travel, but now, millions of Americans may be required to use their passports for domestic travel.

States in full compliance include:

  • Alabama
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • Delaware
  • District of Columbia
  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Hawaii
  • Indiana
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Maryland
  • Mississippi
  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • Ohio
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • West Virginia
  • Wisconsin
  • Wyoming

States receiving temporary extensions through October 10th, 2016 include:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Idaho
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Maine
  • Massachusetts
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania
  • Rhode Island
  • South Carolina
  • Texas
  • Virginia

States receiving temporary extensions June 1st, 2016 include:

  • New Hampshire

States under review for an extension renewal (still able to use their driver’s license until at least January 10th, 2016):

  • Guam
  • North Marianas
  • Puerto Rico
  • Virgin Islands

States not receiving an extension for 2016 and will be subject to enforcement on January 10th, 2016:

  • Illinois
  • Missouri
  • New Mexico
  • Washington

Adult passengers 18 and over must show valid identification at the airport checkpoint in order to travel.

  • Driver’s licenses or other state photo identity cards issued by Department of Motor Vehicles (or equivalent)
  • U.S. passport or U.S. passport card
  • DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST)
  • U.S. military ID (active duty or retired military and their dependents, and DoD civilians)
  • Permanent resident card
  • Border crossing card
  • DHS-designated enhanced driver’s license
  • Airline or airport-issued ID (if issued under a TSA-approved security plan)
  • Federally recognized, tribal-issued photo ID •HSPD-12 PIV card
  • Foreign government-issued passport
  • Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card
  • Transportation worker identification credential

If you are looking for the easiest way to cover all your bases, a passport is going to be your best bet.  The process for obtaining a passport is relatively easy and you can learn more by visiting the US Department of State’s website at http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports.html.  You can usually expect to receive your passport in 4-6 weeks and if you need it sooner, you can have it expedited for a fee.

While these changes may seem like a nuisance, it’s critical for the United States to have more strict policies when it comes to air travel and passenger safety.  So…if you need another 2016 New Year’s resolution, make it be to get your passport ASAP!  You don’t want to miss all the fun that the world, including Disney, has waiting for you!!!  And just think of all the doors this will open for you to begin to travel the world with Disney Cruise Line, Adventures by Disney and to the international Disney Parks!

Top New Year’s Resolutions of a Disney Addict

resolutions
resolutions

resolutions

Ah, the New Year.  It’s a clean slate, a fresh start, and a time to create some resolutions that may not all come to fruition to inspire us in 2016.  But if I’m being completely honest, when it comes to resolutions, I probably have a slightly higher achievement rate when they’re Disney-related.  So what better way to start the year off with than having a list full of Disney-specific resolutions?  Here are some top New Year’s resolutions of a Disney Addict:

Resolution #10: Lose a pound, or two, or three!  I know you might be asking, what does this have to do with Disney?  I’m not a big fan of going on a diet, but I’ll tell you when I get the determination – right before I go on vacation to Disney!  There’s no better time to lose a pound or two, so that I can indulge as much as possible into the food mecca that is Disney World.  That only means I can enjoy my Dole Whips, Ohana bread pudding, Mickey ice cream bars, and Starring Rolls cupcakes, guilt-free.

Resolution #9: Watch a Disney movie you’ve never seen before.  Did you know there was a movie where Wendy was all grown up and her daughter was kidnapped by Captain Hook, prompting Peter Pan to come to her rescue?  It’s called Return to Neverland, and it was released in 2002.  Here’s another one: you’ve probably heard of The Goofy Movie, featuring Goofy and his son, Max.  But how about the sequel, called An Extremely Goofy Movie?  Here, Max heads off to college, where Goofy also ends up getting a job, much to his son’s dismay.  There’s so many hidden gems to choose from: Meet the Robinsons, The Emperor’s New Groove, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Rescuers Down Under…the list goes on and on.

Resolution #8: Ride a ride you’ve never been to before.  My husband and I recently had a chance to go on an adults only trip, and it was amazing!  We rode on rides and did activities we’ve never done before, including Carousel of Progress and Mickey’s Philharmagic.  We also visited Tom Sawyer’s Island for the first time – where I marveled first at how much larger the attraction was than what I could see from the other side of the river, and second, how tricky and somewhat disorienting those dark passages were!  We’ve been to Disney many times, so we don’t really have an excuse for why we’ve never tried them before – but this much is clear, as much as we’ve already done at Disney, we need to try more new things!  On my list for our next trip: ride Journey into Imagination with Figment and Expedition Everest (I know!), and visit one of the walking trails at Animal Kingdom.

Resolution #7: Spread some pixie dust for a cast member.  Yes, Disney is memorable because of the rides and music and the food and entertainment.  But I’ll never forget that one trip when we got caught in the soaking rain and the Cast Member (understandably) refused to let us in to the ride because we were late for our Fast Passes.  I walked over to the Fast Pass stands (back when there were paper passes!) to get new ones, and this one other Cast Member must have overheard the whole thing and took us into the ride anyway.  It completely made our trip to experience a random act of kindness.  But this is just one of many stories I’m sure we all have about the amazing Cast Members at Disney.  In return, I would love to pay it forward in 2016 by recognizing a Cast Member – whether it is by filling out a comment card at guest relations, or by handing out thank you notes handwritten by my children.

Resolution #6: Cook or bake a classic Disney dish.  I’ve seen the recipes, and I’m sure many of you have too.  But I’ve never taken the step of actually trying one out.  What could be better than a lazy weekend spent watching Lilo & Stitch while enjoying Ohana’s bread pudding with bananas foster sauce?  Sure, my version probably won’t come close to the real thing, but at least it’ll be something to tide me over until I get off the monorail and step foot into the Polynesian.

Resolution #5: Go Disney Bounding.  Our very own Disney Fashionista has some fantastic ideas on how you can give an homage to your favorite Disney characters without actually going in costume.  Inspired by Frozen?  How about dressing up in a light blue dress, sparkly silver shoes, and adding a snowflake necklace for good measure?  Or maybe you’d rather channel your inner villain and dress in coordinating black, purple and neon green as an ode to none other than the fabulous Maleficent?

Resolution #4: Take part in a unique Disney experience.  Maybe you’ve never been to the Epcot Food & Wine Festival, or you may never have laced up your running shoes during a RunDisney event.  Disney offers so many unique experiences, from special dessert parties all the way down to a haircut right at the heart of Main Street!  The choices are endless!  For me in 2016, it’s going on a behind-the-scenes tour of Magic Kingdom, like with the Keys to the Kingdom Tour.

Resolution #3: Meet-and-greet a new character.  I find that some of the most special interactions our family has had with Disney characters are those that are the least expected.  One time, we were on our way into Hollywood Studios and ran into a few princesses doing meet-and-greets.  An unexpected visit with Mulan turned into a five-minute conversation with my two young daughters not just about honor, but fabulous shoes!  For our next visit, I would love to meet Gaston.  His lines are always long, but he seems like such a hoot!

Resolution #2: Try a new Disney restaurant!  With new choices opening up (Jungle Navigation Co. Ltd. Skipper Canteen, anyone?) this should be easy peasy!  But let’s not forget, there are also some restaurants that serve outstanding options without requiring that I get up at the crack of dawn at the 180-day mark to book.  Case in point: on our last vacation, we tried the Garden Grill for the first time, and we will always make it a part of our future trips.  The character interaction was one of the best, if not the best, we’ve ever experienced during a character meal. I still dream about the freshness of the salad (and my husband would probably characterize me as somewhat “allergic” to salad) and the yumminess of the other entrees.  While we all have our favorites for a reason, I’m sure Disney will continue to surprise and amaze if we give it a chance!

Resolution #1: Plan a trip to Disney!  As a self-confessed Disney Addict, this is always at the top of my list.  In fact, as soon as my vacation is over, I can’t wait to plan for the next one.  Maybe it’s a land-and-sea trip, or a trip during a special event like the Epcot Flower & Garden Festival.  Maybe it’s a trip during the holidays or for a special occasion.  Or better yet, maybe it’s a trip for no reason other than being at the happiest place on Earth.  Thankfully, Disney comes to the help of our collective pocketbooks with some discounts – so our next trip is a little bit closer to our reach.

Speaking of discounts, you may not have heard that Disney came out with some fantastic discounts this spring!  There are room only discounts up to 25% off standard rates as well as room & ticket package rates – like a 3-night/2-day stay in a standard room at Disney’s All-Star Music Resort with theme park tickets for a family of 3 for just $908!  New Year’s can’t come soon enough so I can start crossing some things off this list!

With that, I will turn it over to you.  What are your Disney-inspired New Year’s resolutions for 2016?  Who’s thinking about a trip to Disney in the New Year?  Sound off in the comments below!

Hi, I’m Myra and I’m a huge Disney nerd and addict!  I’m also an independent travel agent at World of Magic Travel, the preferred agency of Chip and Co. and Disney Addicts.  If you have any questions regarding your upcoming vacation, or if there’s anything I can do to help you book and plan your trip, visit my page or send me an email at [email protected].  My services are always free!

New Permits Show Future Plans for Disney Springs

Disney Springs plans

Details were released earlier this week on two permits that provide details into the future plans of Disney Springs.

Disney-Springs-blueprints-1

More details have been released on the new restaurant, The Edison, opening in 2016. The permits feature the layout of the restaurant, including placement of areas called: The Tesla Lounge, the Patent Office, Radio Room, and Telegraph Lounge. At The Edison you can enjoy cabaret-style entertainment while dining on American food and cocktails.

The space located next to The Edison is rumored to be a themed restaurant named for Walt Disney himself. Rumor has it that the Disney themed restaurant will be called Walt’s, and features a space called The Office.

However, the biggest speculation comes from the revealing of an underground tunnel located underneath the Disney Springs walkway. The plans show multiple restroom locations and seems to have a large area with multiple bars and possibly an area for a  dance floor. Rumors are flying that this will be the location of an underground bar called, Neverland Tunnel .

Disney Springs has seen major renovations while transforming from Downtown Disney, including beautiful pedestrian bridges and the recent addition of Star Wars Galactic Outpost, and has many great additions opening in 2016!

Recent and future dining options include:

Are “Frozen” Champagne bottles taking it to far?

frozen fixed

Frozen is a much loved movie, with a catchy sound track and a beautiful ice princess, merchandise has gone crazy and you can find your favorite Frozen characters almost everywhere. Well a UK alcohol awareness group have found these lovable characters someone where they don’t belong!

In the United Kingdom Anna, Elsa and crew can be found on a children’s non-alcoholic sparkling grape juice which is stored in a bottle that look like campaign bottles.  These drinks are being sold in Home Bargians and on their website the caption reads:

“Little princes and princesses across the land who want to be more sophisticated can now have a grown-up alternative to juice and pop at parties. The Disney Frozen Non-Alcoholic Party Drink is a delicious sparkling white grape fruit drink which would be perfect at birthdays, family events, BBQs or after a long day building snowmen with Olaf. With a champagne style cork pop, your little one is sure to feel part of every celebration.”

Many of the alcohol awareness group fear these bottles and the way they are being sold may encourage children to experiment with the real thing. A spokesperson for Disney said the will be pulling the product, it will no longer be sold after April 2016. The spokesperson was quoted as saying:

“We have recently been made aware of the Vitpress Disney Frozen Non-Alcoholic Party Drink, a licensed product that originates in Poland. As we set very high standards for the quality of products bearing the Disney name and characters, we have informed the manufacturer that we will no longer license Disney images to a product that is packaged to look like alcohol.”

Do you think you would let your children drink from these campaign bottles?

Dis Pins Valentine

Today Disney Parks Blog gave us a peek at some of the new pins to collect or trade, coming to Disney Parks and Resorts in 2016. The revealed a first look at several new open edition and limited edition pins. Here are a few of the sneak peeks they showed off today.

dis pins2

The first look was at a new pin-of-the-month collection titled “Disney Love Letters.” Each of the limited edition pins feature characters expressing thoughtful sentiments of love. This collection will have an edition size of 3,000 and be shared between Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resorts.

The next collection also shown above is the “Magical Montage 2016” collection, and will be released at Walt Disney World Resort. The delightful pins will have characters next to a familiar icon that opens to reveal another character. This will be another pin-of-the-month series with a new pin released each month, and an edition size of 3,000.

Dis Pins4

The Disneyland Diamond Celebration will still be getting some recognition with more Disneyland “D” character pins. These will also have a run of 3,000 but will only be released at Disneyland Resort.

One of the other collections spotlighted is the “Disney Duets” pin-of-the-month. I am IN LOVE they are just beautiful and unique. These pins will have a new one each month and come in a charming metal box with lid. The details on these are amazing, they are like little framed works of art.

The ever popular “Piece of Disney History” pins will return to Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts in 2016. As in previous releases each pin in the collection will contain a piece of a Disney Park attraction, show, or icon. (How cool is that??)

Dis Pins6

Two mystery pin sets will also make their debut, that are inspired by artwork from Mark Magic 2015. These designs were offered as t-shirts last spring. Now you can trade your favorite teams with these new sets containing 16 pins each. Above are some of the Disneyland Resort collection pins!

dis pins

Finally there is a look at a handful of the open edition pins being released throughout the year. Disney Parks Blog gave us a look at the Humphrey the Bear, Mary Poppins and 20,000 Leagues under the sea pins that will be joining the open pins.

One of the coolest things I love that they showed off are the pin gift boxes currently available at Disney Parks that you can use for giving pins as gifts! LOVE!

I love when there are new pins to look forward to! Have you made your new year pin check list yet?
