Top 4 Disney World Resort Activities

When planning their Walt Disney World vacation, most people will tend to focus on the 4 Theme Parks and plan their days around their visits to these spots – and with good reason – the Theme Parks are FULL of amazing rides, shows, characters, food, parades, and more! But there’s also plenty to do outside the Parks too. Don’t believe me? Well, then I invite you to read on and learn more about all the great NON Theme Park things there are to do at WDW:

Shopping: You can definitely give your credit card a workout with all the amazing stores there are at Walt Disney World – and some of the very best ones are found outside the Theme Parks. Every WDW Resort has at least one souvenir shop that offers a wide variety of Disney gear – and most also offer some specialty shops as well. But the BEST place to shop at Disney, hands down, is Disney Springs (Formerly Downtown Disney) – where a veritable mecca of shopping options awaits – and we aren’t talking just Disney themed stores either – there’s a Harley Davidson store, art stores, jewelry and clothing stores, and MUCH more

Swimming: If you happen to be staying at a WDW owned Resort, then you’ll have multiple options for taking a dip – you’ll find family friendly pools with waterfalls, slides, and toddler play areas; plus there’s quieter/more secluded pools tucked away in various places around the Resort grounds too. Even if you aren’t a big swimmer, you can relax in the sun and enjoy an adult beverage from the nearby pool bar. If you aren’t staying at a WDW Resort – fear not, as it’s likely that your Resort will have at least one pool for you to enjoy – after all, you’re in Florida (where pretty much everyone has a pool)

Explore Your Resort: The Disney Resorts offer TONS of fun on site things to do – most have movie nights, trivia, activities for kids, and more. Plus – there are some great things to see if you take some time to walk around the Resort – play areas, cool photo ops, gardens and other cool décor and landscaping that all adds to the theming. Personally I love to wander around whatever Resort I am staying at, and I recommend you take some time to do this too – you never know what you might find!

Dining: All WDW Resorts (and most offsite hotels too) offer at least one dining location – and they are usually pretty great places to grab a bite! All WDW Value Resorts have large “food court” style eateries – and the food is actually REALLY good at them! There’s your standards like burgers, chicken nuggets, pizza – but there’s also unique items like a Mongolian grill menu, create your own salads, gelato, and plenty of grab’n’go options as well. Most Moderate and Deluxe Resorts offer quick service dining as well as sit down restaurants too – and there are some pretty great places to eat – sushi, steak, seafood, 5 star fare – you name it, the WDW Resorts have got it! So don’t limit yourself to eating just at the Parks – make sure you check out your Resort and neighboring Resorts for dining too

While the Theme Parks are one of the best things about WDW, I think that getting to stay on site at one of the WDW Resorts is almost as good as the Parks – there’s so much to do and see and explore! I HIGHLY recommend you take some time out and check out your Resort – it may seem like just a place to sleep – but it’s got so much more in store for you!

New Trailer Released for Disney’s “The BFG”

THE BFG, directed by Steven Spielberg based on the beloved novel by Roald Dahl, is the exciting tale of a young London girl (Ruby Barnhill) and the mysterious Giant (Mark Rylance) who introducers her to the wonders and perils of Giant Country.

Today a new trailer for the upcoming Walt Disney Studio’s film “The BFG” was released, and I couldn’t be more excited! This film will be nostalgic for me and many others, as it is based on the classic children’s book “The BFG” (The Big Friendly Giant) by author Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Matilda). As seen from previous movies based on Dahl’s books, his stories are incredibly heartwarming and adventurous, and speaks to the child in all of us–I can only imagine how wonderful the combination will be of Disney bringing a Dahl book to the big screen.

Three-time Academy Award winning director Steven Spielberg is the director of the film, and has this to say about this story: “I think it was kind of genius of Roald Dahl to be able to empower the children. It was very, very brave of him to introduce that combination of darkness and light which was so much Disney’s original signature in a lot of their earlier works like in ‘Dumbo,’ ‘Fantasia,’ ‘Snow White’ and ‘Cinderella,’ and being able to do scary, but also be redemptive at the same time and teach a lesson, an enduring lesson, to everyone, it was a wonderful thing for Dahl to have done, and it was one of the things that attracted me to want to direct this Dahl book.”

The story is about a giant who shows a girl the wonders and excitement of Giant Country. From watching the trailer, you can see that the Big Friendly Giant (played by Mark Rylance) looks very similar to the illustrations from the original book. The film also stars Bill Hader (who plays Bloodbottler) and Jemaine Clement (who plays Fleshlumpeater).

The film will be released on July 1st of this year, 100 years after Roald Dahl’s birth. You can check out some stills from the trailer below:

Characters for hire is being sued by Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilms Entertainment for using copyrighted characters without permission, the suit was filed in Manhattan federal Court on last week.

The lawsuit is claiming that Characters for hire was using copyrighted characters such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Snow White, Spiderman, Iron Man, Darth Vader, Princess Leia and others to promote their services on their website even after being asked three times by the plaintiffs to remove the images. The owner of Characters for Hire, Avi Lieberman, said he would comply with the request to remove them yet never did.

On Thursday Characters for Hire was promoting an event on its website called “Je’Daii Training”. The intro for the sword fighting show suggested for birthday parties, bar/bat mitzvahs and bachelor/bachelorette parties was a rip off of the opening line to Star Wars reading “A long time ago in a galaxy far far away”

Disney, Marvel and Lucasfilms is suing for an amount to be determined by the courts.

What do you think about this? Has Characters for Hire gone too far?

First Glimpse of Pixar’s Newest Short “Piper”

Before every new Pixar film we also get an additional treat, a brand  new short. Before this summers “Finding Dory”, we will get to also meet an adorable piper bird in the short film called “Piper”, according to an Entertainment Weekly report. The short is about the beach-dwelling birds commonly seen searching the sand for food, yet constantly dodging waves as they come up to shore. “Piper” director Alan Barillaro would often see these birds on the beaches near Emeryville, CA (where Pixar’s studio is located), and he found it incredibly interesting to watch a bird who spends their life on the beach yet is scared of the water bearing towards them.

Barillaro started testing out some Pixar technology using this bird for screen tests, but his mentor, and “Finding Dory” director Andrew Stanton encouraged him to expand on the story about the piper bird. The story will be about one of these little piper birds who has hydrophobia (fear of water), and having to deal with this phobia while on the search for food on the beach. Barillaro says about his concept, “It’s always fun to show a world we’re familiar with but from a different perspective. We’ve all been to the beach, but have we ever viewed water from just an inch off the sand? That could be very fearful from a bird’s perspective.”

You’ll be able to see “Piper” and “Finding Dory” when they hit theaters June 17th!

Finalists Announced for Marvel’s Girl’s Reforming the Future Challenge

Last month, Marvel, in conjunction with their latest film “Captain America: Civil War”, held a competition for girls (Girls Reforming the Future Challenge) grades 10-12 to submit a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics) project which held the potential to change the world. To submit to the competition, contestants had to submit a video giving a proposal for their innovative project and explain how it would make the world a better place.

Marvel has narrowed down their over 1,000 submissions to five finalists, who will be flown to Southern California to present their project in person to a panel of experts. The winner will receive a week-long internship at Marvel studios! This is a very exciting competition, empowering many girls across the country to receive the opportunity of a lifetime, while also encouraging our young people to think outside the box and strive to make the world a better place.

The five finalists all had some pretty awesome innovations to share:

  • Maia Dua, 10th grader from Sacramento, CA: A minimal maintenance, echo-locating seeing-eye robot to provide a more cost effective alternative to those in need of a seeing-eye dog.
  • Margaret Fleck, 11th grader from Emmaus, PA: Due to hearing issues developing from excess use of earbuds, she developed a computer program to work in conjunction with earbuds to gradually reduce its volume over time so that people do not get negatively impacted from extended use.
  • Janie Kim, 11th grader from San Diego, CA: Created a safe, efficient room sterilization mechanism that released anti-microbial vapors throughout a room. Ideal for places such as movie theaters, hospitals, etc, that can sterilize a room much faster than cleaning by hand.
  • Vivian Qiang, 17 years old, Marlboro, NJ: Created a cost-effective hybrid solar thermal collector for people to use in their homes. This would be a more environmentally friendly way to heat one’s house with using less non-renewable resources.
  • Holly Reiping, 11th grader, Colorado Springs, CO: Created cost-effective solar-powered mobile computers with educational software, so that those in underserved areas of the world could use computers who do not have access to wifi.

These all sound like amazing ideas that could impact the world in amazing ways–I can’t wait to find out the winner! You can learn more about the competition and the finalists from this video released from Marvel:

“Captain America: Civil War” will come to theaters May 6th, you can watch the latest trailer here.

New details about Epcot’s Frozen Ever After attraction have been revealed on the Disney Website.  This summer is sure to be a hot one at Walt Disney World but guests may catch a chill over at the Norway Pavillion at this brand new family friendly attraction.
