With Disney LOL, Disney fans of all ages can join the fun and view GIFs, Vines, short-form videos (up to two minutes) and browse through a variety of non-episodic content from Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Interactive Media , Star Wars, and Marvel. The app is free to download and available for iOS and Android in the United States and Canada.

The Disney LOL app builds on the success Disney is experiencing with content created for various social media and micro content platforms. Disney currently has 1.15 billion followers across these platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, YouTube, Snapchat and Vine), driving 325 million views per month.

“Our audience engages when we interpret classic Disney stories in new ways, with bite-sized, shareable pieces of content relatable to all ages,” Michael Hundgen, Director of Content Strategy and Editorial, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media said. “By bringing Disney’s social content into the Disney LOL app experience, we’re making it possible for all audiences to access this engaging content. We’re creating content for digitally-native families every day, and these new experiences offer Disney stories and characters in formats that are familiar to our audience and on the devices they use most.”

In addition to the Disney LOL app, families, including kids, can also enjoy Disney interactive content and short-form video on the new Disney LOL portal (lol.disney.com) and Mickey Video app.

  • On the web, the Disney LOL portal (lol.disney.com) is a uniquely Disney digital experience that features interactive Disney videos, games, memes, GIFs, micro-interactives, jokes, trivia, polls, and more.

Take a Video Tour of the New Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Location in Disney Springs

BBBADS8957922

We had recently reported that the Disney Springs Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique had moved to a new location behind Once Upon a Toy, and today Disney has released a video tour of the new enchanting makeover location!

This year, the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique at Disney Springs celebrates 10 years. The original location inside World of Disney was the first enchanted beauty salon at Disney Parks. The newly expanded salon near Once Upon a Toy is five times larger than the original location.

Inspired by the Walt Disney’s “Cinderella,” the expanded salon has a country home-inspired feel that complements the story of Disney Springs. Essentially, this location is the place for princesses and knights to prepare for the royal ball.

BBBADS8957924

At this location, Fairy Godmothers-in-Training will continue making magical transformations for guests ages 3 to 12. Girls can choose a hairstyle then add make-up, nail color and accessories—even a Disney princess costume. Boys can join in the fun too, as they’re transformed into gallant knights.

BBBADS8957923

There are new interactive elements, décor and artwork found throughout the Boutique. The tile mural of Cinderella Castle just inside the Salon is gorgeous!

BBBADS8957924

In fall 2016, Disney will introduce the Disney Princess Signature Collection at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique as shown in the image below. Look for additional details in the coming months about this elegant new collection.

The BFG Movie Press Interviews

TheBFG576ae77ad04b5

The day after seeing the wonderfully magical film “The BFG“, I had the experience every movie buff dreams of: Getting to an interview with Stephen Spielberg. Along with getting to hear about Spielberg’s passion for bring the Roald Dahl book to life, I also had the pleasure of hearing from the film’s stars Academy Award-Winner Mark Ryland (BFG), Ruby Barnhill (Sophie), and Dame Penelope Wilton (The Queen).

TheBFG57730a93b4387

Penelope Wilton amazed me in the film, she is such a chameleon that I at first didn’t recognize that she was the actress playing a 1986 Queen Elizabeth in “The BFG.” This film was Wilton’s first experience working with Spielberg, and she absolutely loved the experience. She said he is a very hands-on director, and very quick to shoot each scene since he provides such clear direction to his actors. Roald Dahl was a British author, and she described his stories as being “very British” in humor, with a very British take on life. She feels that “The BFG” movie turned out incredible since the film is the result of a great storyteller (Dahl) combined with a great filmmaker (Spielberg). This particular role was especially fun for Wilton to take on, as she not only got to portray the Queen, but she was able to play a version of the Queen that was in a fantasy world, and she enjoyed getting to interpret a Queen Elizabeth that was part reality and part fantasy.

TheBFG57730a45b5e29

This film was Mark Rylance’s second film with Spielberg, having previously been in “Bridge of Spies”. Rylance mentioned that he is in fact, the first actor to do two consecutive films with Spielberg, and they have four more films they plan to do together. Rylance said that Spielberg always changes his technical processes for each of his films, and is one to always take on new risks and challenges. Rylance enjoys this fun type of chaos as an actor, and loves the spontaneity on set that results from it. Something the actor quite enjoyed in filming “The BFG” was getting to always film his scenes one on one with Ruby Barnhill. Often times movies with children have the actors film in with a stand-in, since minors can’t work as many hours on set. Rylance recalled that the chemistry between him and the young actress was amazing, and that they brought the best out of each other’s performances, so they made it work to always work with each other directly.

TheBFG57730a434182d

Rylance is very versed in Shakespeare, and was even the previous artistic director at The Globe Theater in England. I asked him in the interview session if his training and experience with Shakespeare’s unique language helped him with his having to tackle another uncommon language in “The BFG” (referring to the giant speak, Gobblefunk). He said that he felt a lot of relation between Shakespeare’s use of words, and Dahl’s Gobblefunk vernacular. They both experiment with words just for pleasure; for the joy of how they sound. They focus on having their consonants sound appealing to the ear, and put a focus on the beauty of words. Rylance said that in our present day where scientific and mathematical words dominate our language, its a nice change of pace to have fun with words.

TheBFG57730a4b98e4b

This was actress Ruby Barnhill’s very first film, but with her father being a British actor she has grown up in the world of acting. She had previously done acting classes and theater, but working on a film was a new and wonderful experience for her (albeit challenging). Barnhill said that it was fun getting to play Sophie, since she can be independent, and bossy, and these are things you aren’t typically allowed to be as a child. Her character overall though has a warm heart and is a sensitive soul, so Barnhill was excited to get to portray a character with such a wide range of emotions. She feels she has grown so much from this experience, and two of the greatest things she learned on set was concentration, and that it’s okay to make mistakes.

TheBFG576ae77ad04b5

Director Stephen Spielberg was nice and easy to talk to, and his passion for this film clearly showed through. Spielberg explained that one of his major attractions to making “The BFG” into a movie was that it was about a young girl. Spielberg has always admired that Walt Disney prominently featured strong women characters, and Sophie, having such “true grit” when facing a 20 ft giant, reminded him of the strong young women Walt Disney featured in his films.  He also loved that this story is about conversation, not only playing with conversation through Gobblefunk, but also about creating a friendship through conversation. It was a film that once he read the book he knew he had to bring to screen, and meant a great deal ti him. Spielberg liked that he had never done a film like this before, that involved this much magic and fantasy. He spent about three years working on the film, and the moment he wrapped he realized how deeply in love he had fallen with the project.

TheBFG576ae5e603b22

The actors and Spielberg definitely seemed like a tight knit group, who like Spielberg all seemed to fall in love with their characters and the story, and formed true friendships on-screen and off. “The BFG” can be seen in U.S. theaters July 1st.

Movie Review – Disney & Spielberg’s The BFG

thebfg

I had the pleasure of seeing “The BFG” a couple of weeks ago, something I was incredibly excited about having been a Roald Dahl fan most of my life. Disney’s live action film directed by Stephen Spielberg is coming at the perfect time, at the 100th anniversary of Dahl’s birth, who wrote the book on which the film is based.

A Fantasy-genre movie is hard to pull off. A Family-Fantasy-genre movie is even more so. Rules, limitations, and sometimes entire languages have to be crammed into a relatively short run-time, all the while being tasked with having a fun and entertaining story. And it must also be magical. After having seen Disney & Spielberg’s adaptation of “The BFG“, I came to a conclusion: This movie is what all other Family-Fantasy-genre movies wish they could be.

Spielberg wastes no time starting the story, jumping right into the life of young orphan girl Sophie (played by Ruby Barnhill) as she accidentally spies a gangly giant skulking by her window. As a result she is whisked away to Giant Country, where the giant (known only as the Big, Friendly Giant, or BFG, played by Mark Rylance) keeps and protects Sophie from the other bigger, less-friendly giants, led by man-eating bully The Fleshlumpeater(played by Jemaine Clement).

Shining at the center of a charming cast of actors is Rylance, who, as the BFG, brings amazing warmth to a mostly CGI character. His slow, simple, English Countryside dialect paired with his ridiculous gibberish-like vocabulary consistently draws the audience in. Even as he first appears stern and grumpy toward young Sophie, this vanishes as the two begin their friendship based on their respective solitude.

The visuals of Giant Country create the magic of the film. With near-perfect motion capture technology, all the giant characters, as grotesque and exaggerated as they may be, appear as real as their human co-stars. Settings such as the BFG’s cave home are wonderfully detailed as a child would imagine a giant’s cottage, full of human trinkets used for giant purposes, such as a three-mast sailboat for a bed. And John Williams’ score dials up the enchantment even further, making the world feel magical and unusual, but familiar in a child’s eyes.

The movie, although definitely great for families, might have some mildly scary moments to very young children. I think any child 5 or above would enjoy the film. “The BFG” hits theaters July 1st.

Dick Van Dyke Leads Fan Sing-Along at Disney’s Birthplace

Dick

Dick

Dick Van Dyke, who became a Disney legend by playing Burt in “Mary Poppins“, is still singing his heart out at age 90! Van Dyke was recently in Chicago to promote the Walt Disney house, which is the birthplace of Walt Disney. The Walt Disney house, with much community support and funding is opening to the public once restorations are finished.

When in Chicago, he sang a rendition of “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” along with Disney fans outside of Disney’s birth place. People shared the fan submitted video of the Van Dyke sing-along:

The video ought to make fans feel absolutely supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!

Many Question Disney’s Depiction of Demigod Maui in Moana

MOANA
MOANA

MOANA

In Walt Disney Animation Studio’s upcoming film “Moana“, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson portrays demigod Maui. For those unfamiliar with what a demigod is, it is an ancestor which exhibits both human and godly characteristics, a very important aspect of Hawaiian creation myths. The character of Maui is based on the Hawaiian demigod of the same name, but his physical appearance has many critics, artists, and even politicians stating their opinions.

The Washington Post reported that Jenny Salesa, a member of New Zealand’s parliament posted to her Facebook page:

“When we look at photos of Polynesian men & women from the last 100-200 years, most of our people were not overweight and this negative stereotype of Maui is just not acceptable.”

In reference to the Maui body-type controversy, Wil Ilolahia of the Pacific Media Association described his portrayal as “typical American stereotyping.”

In contrast to these views who feel the “Moana” depiction of Maui is negative, others, such as Samoan artist Michel Mulipola found his body-type to be a positive thing: “Thick build represents power and strength.”

It’s hard to say exactly what Maui should look like, Disney and everyone else in their imagination could have different views of him, as there are no images of Maui, since he is very sacred to Tongan culture.

You can take a closer look at the demigod Maui in “Moana” in the official teaser trailer below:

Levi’s Store and more to Join Disney Springs Shopping Lineup

LMP5896893

Disney announced today the newest store to join the world class shopping at Disney Springs Town Center will be Levi’s. The new store will open later this summer, and Disney had this to say about the newest additions we can come to expect at Disney Springs Town Center:

Opening later this summer, the Levi’s Store will offer denim for the entire family – yes, kids can get jeans here, too! And for anyone who wants to have their clothing tailored, the Tailor Shop at the front of the store will allow shoppers to get their favorite shorts, T-shirts, truckers and accessories personalized by a team of craftsmen. (This offering is exclusive to just a handful of Levi’s locations worldwide, so I’m extra excited that it’s coming to Disney Springs!)

Don’t want to wait for more new shopping? You don’t have to. Opening soon in Town Center are Superdry, Sugarboo & Co., Shore, Columbia Sportswear and Coca-Cola Store Orlando, all joining the most recent additions that include LACOSTE, Free People and JOHNNY WAS.

Superdry, a cool British brand, offers high-quality wardrobe staples like jackets, knits, leather goods and leisurewear at affordable prices. Sugarboo & Co., “dealer in whimsy” and carrying “fine quality art and fanciful goods” – which roughly translates to “uplifting art, whimsical paper products and charming home goods that I want to decorate my condo with.” (At least I think that’s what it means.) Shore, known for its made-in-America apparel and eclectic branded lifestyle merchandise mix, is opening its second-ever store – the first is based in Sarasota, FL – with plans to offer some limited-edition products available only at Disney Springs. Columbia Sportswear, a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts, features rugged and stylish apparel, footwear and equipment that’s “tested tough.” Coca-Cola Store Orlando, a completely immersive retail destination, allows guest to experience the world most iconic beverage brand in a building modeled after a 1920s bottling plant.

Of course, all of this shopping requires fuel, so if you want to try the newest restaurant, you’ll be thrilled to learn that Frontera Cocina by celebrity chef Rick Bayless is now open.

We’re looking forward to these new additions to the Town Center. Which store ar eyou most excited for?
