Captain America: Civil War Press Conference – Team Iron Man

From left to right: Anthony Russo, Paul Bettany, Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Sharon Van Camp, and Kevin Feige

This past Sunday I had the amazing opportunity to go to the “Captain America: Civil War” press conference at the London Hotel in Beverly Hills. Having been able to see the movie the day before, I was incredibly excited to hear the amazing panel elaborate more on their characters and the making-of this epic film. Walking into the hotel, the lobby was packed full of other members of the press, all of us eagerly waiting to see the men and women behind our favorite superhero movies of all time, every Marvel fan’s dream!

Going with the theme of the Avengers being divided by their opinions of how they should be operated, there were two back-to-back panels; one for Team Iron Man and one for Team Captain America. On the Team Iron Man panel, there was co-director Anthony Russo, producer Kevin Feige, Paul Bettany (Vision), Emily Van Camp (Sharon Carter), Don Cheadle (War Machine/James Rhodes), and of course Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr. (Tony Stark/Iron Man).

Kevin Feige is the producer of this film, as well as the president of Marvel Studios. In hearing him speak, it is clear to see that he is passionate about the work he does, and has a genuine love for each and every film, character, and even scene in a Marvel movie. Feige said that he is in absolute awe of the line-up of talent in “Captain America: Civil War”, and is admiring not only of the actors when they are performing as their characters, but also of the character and scene work the actors put into this film off camera. Feige said, “There’s never been an ensemble like this in cinematic history.” He strongly believes that every character has an important message, purpose, and inspiration. Feige has been able to of course have a longer relationship with characters such as Iron Man and Captain America, having worked on many of the films surrounding their stories. In being asked how he felt about the newer characters in this film, he expressed that Black Panther (played by Chadwick Boseman) was the perfect addition for “Civil War.” Not only because he is a fan of the comic book character and felt Chadwick was the perfect person to be cast in the role, but he thought “Civil War” needed a character who wasn’t fully on Captain America’s side nor fully on Iron Man’s side, someone who could see points on both sides of the conflict to help the two main characters have some perspective for each argument.

Co-director Anthony Russo, having had a few Marvel movies under his belt, still loves making these films. As CGI and film-making technologies are improving rapidly, he always likes to re-visit the world of the Avengers every couple of years to get to interpret their stories and battles using the latest technology in the film industry. In addition to incredible visuals, he discussed that he feels that one of the biggest reasons movies in the Marvel cinematic universe are so unique is due to a relatively small crew mapping out the character’s stories. Russo explained how most big budget films have large crews of people working on story lines, climaxes, etc, but for these films it is him, fellow co-director Joe Russo, and Kevin Feige who are intimately working together to map out the next moves for each of their characters. Russo, like Feige, also felt the inclusion of new characters such as Spider-Man and Black Panther were crucial for this particular film. Since there were so many plot lines to keep track of and deeply rooted character’s backgrounds to visit in “Captain America: Civil War”, he felt having character’s without such long histories in the Marvel Cinematic Universe helped the movie have moments of humor to balance out the moments of high emotion and intensity. Russo said although their films always have plenty of intensity, action, and adventure, it is the character’s individual personalities, heart, and emotions that truly give the films their substance. He believes if you have a film rich in relationships, along with action, this brings a unique cinematic experience. If you just have action without the heart, it’s easy for audiences not to be captivated.

Prior to “Avengers: Age of Ultron” Paul Bettany voiced J.A.R.V.I.S., who then took a new, more human form called Vision. Bettany talked about how he quite enjoys playing Vision, since it’s an interesting task portraying a role of someone who is trying to figure out humanity and how to interact with the physical world around him. It is a character he has been familiar with for years, but now his character is experiencing more human emotions and even developing flaws.

Emily Van Camp, who plays Sharon Carter, said that she absolutely loves being a part of these films. Not only because she enjoys her character, but is a huge fan of action and adventure in film and television. She didn’t explicitly say at the press conference, but I got the feeling that we may see some more action from Sharon Carter in the future, and Van Camp would definitely be on board to film those types of scenes.

Don Cheadle, who plays Tony Stark’s loyal sidekick War Machine, or Rhody, as Stark lovingly calls him, went in-depth about his character. He discussed how Rhody’s main conflict is figuring out what he owes as a serviceman to his friend Tony Stark versus what his line of duty is for his country. His personal ongoing struggle is trying to figure out a system of checks and balances, and this uncertainty he has shows through the most in “Captain America: Civil War”.

Robert Downey Jr., just like Tony Stark, is quite the personality and incredibly interesting to hear speak. He had so much of the humor and confidence of Tony, but without the ego! Downey talked a lot about how he was over the moon when he found out Spider-Man would be a part of the film, he absolutely loves the comics and even admitted he “fan-boyed” a little upon finding out he would be included in “Captain America: Civil War.” He played a hand in the casting of Tom Holland as Spider-Man, and really enjoyed their scene work and time filming together. “Captain America: Civil War” was an especially interesting film for Downey since he feels that his character of Iron Man/Tony Stark has some really pivotal moments and emotions in this story. He explains how Tony is someone who is broken and narcissistic, and his character is beginning to realize that he is these things, and trying to heal and fix himself for the better.

It was an incredible event to say the least, to see some of the greatest movie superheroes in cinematic history in-person discussing their characters, and getting to learn more about this incredible film. Stay tuned for the second part of the press conference, where we hear from Team Captain America!

Anna and Elsa – Coming and Going Soon!

It looks as though Anna and Elsa will officially be leaving their space at Princess Fairytale Hall at Magic Kingdom once the new Royal Sommerhus in Epcot opens this summer. Guests will soon be able to find them at the Norway Pavilion next to the new Frozen Ever After attraction, which also plans to open summer 2016.

Olaf – Coming Soon to Hollywood Studios!

The lovable snowman from Frozen will begin making appearances at the new Celebrity Spotlight in Disney’s Hollywood Studios in April. According to the Disney website, it looks like he will be available for pictures, autographs and hugs beginning this month. There is a reference to “catch Olaf before he melts!”, which makes me wonder if Olaf will only be visiting temporarily.

Special Mother’s Day Dining at Disneyland Resort

mothers day 4762
mothers day 4762

mothers day-4762

If you plan on taking Mom to Disneyland this Mother’s Day, there are a few special dining opportunities that have just been announced in her honor.

If you plan on heading to Disneyland then you should know that both Blue Bayou Restaurant and Carnation Café are adding a special dish just for mom’s day. Carnation Café is adding teriyaki honey grilled salmon with spinach orzo, and at Blue Bayou Restaurant, it’s a seafood pot pie with lobster, mahi, snow crab claws, English peas, carrots and potatoes.

If Mom’s up for a character meal, then you can start the day with brunch at Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel with a made-to-order omelet station, eggs Benedict and more. If she prefers prefer dinner, there’s roasted chicken, salmon, pork loin and roasted turkey with all the delectable sides and sweets.

Another character breakfast buffet option is at PCH Grill at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel, where the day starts with Disney characters and a generous spread of breakfast goodies from Scottish salmon to roast chicken, chilaquiles with scrambled eggs, frittatas and more. Dinner (without Disney characters) includes a seafood station with shrimp Alfredo and littleneck clams; carving station with roast, ribs and steamed mussels; a mini-taco station; mac ‘n cheese bar; build-your-own salad and lots of seasonal desserts.

If Mom would rather play at the parks all day and end with a delicious extravagant meal, then she should try one of our favorites places for dinner at Steakhouse 55, where a three-course prix fixe dinner ($55) starts with lemon fettuccine with a pan-seared scallop, then filet mignon with lobster-whipped potatoes and spring vegetables and, for a sweet ending, chocolate-covered red velvet cake. Pair each course with wine and let mom relax. After all, she did walk through the park(s) with you all day on her special day.

I got to spend last Mother’s Day in Disneyland with my family, and it was extra special, so I hope your Mother’s Day is too!

If you’d like to book a Disneyland vacation to celebrate Mom, it’s not too late! Ssend me an email at [email protected] to take advantage of my FREE Disney Vacation Planning services, and we can make Mom’s Day the best Mother’s Day she’s had yet!

The force has definitely been awakening at Disneyland this Spring as images were released today of the ground breaking ceremony for the new Star Wars land expansion in Anaheim.

Disney Parks released this unique footage of the 14 acre expansion which was made after buildings were leveled near the Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree section of the park.

When information was initially released during the D23 convention last August,  Bob Iger, CEO of the Walt Disney Company said of the expansion: “We are creating a jaw-dropping new world that represents our largest single-themed land expansion ever. These new lands at Disneyland and Walt Disney World will transport guests to a whole new Star Wars planet, including an epic Star Wars adventure that puts you in the middle of a climactic battle between the First Order and the Resistance.”

To make way for this new world, Disneyland will be closing 10 attractions and eateries including: Big Thunder Ranch,  Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree, Big Thunder Ranch BBQ, Big Thunder Ranch Petting Zoo which will be closed  permanently. Fantasmic, Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia, Pirates Liar on Tom Sawyer Island, Disneyland Railroad, and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes are faced with temporary closures.

Walt Disney World Resort should should be hot on Disneyland’s coattails with a series of closures recently being made at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.  The Premier Theater, Lights Motor Action and Honey I Shrunk the Kids Movie Set Adventure, Monster Inc Meet and Greet, and Studio Catering Company have all been closed to make room.

For now these areas look like nothing more than a shell of Disney days gone by or in Disneyland’s case a landscape more reminiscent of  Jakku than Frontierland.  Hopefully with construction now under way we’ll start to see some Star Wars magic in the weeks and months ahead.

Movie Review – Disney’s The Jungle Book

thejunglebook3
thejunglebook3

thejunglebook3

This past Saturday evening I had the pleasure to attend a screening of the new live-action “The Jungle Book” from Walt Disney Studios. The screening was at the historic El Capitan Theatre in Hollywood, a very ornate theatre owned by Disney that is positioned right across the street from Grauman’s Chinese Theater and the Hollywood Walk of Fame lining the sidewalk outside, it was truly an incredible Hollywood experience. I would love to share with our readers my review of Disney’s newest film–and don’t worry, it’s spoiler-free!

As it’s clear to see from just the trailers and posters alone, the visuals are incredible. The CGI jungle looks incredibly real, you would think the film crew were constantly on location in an Indian jungle. All of the animal characters were amazingly photo-realistic. When I first heard that the animals mouths would be moving, I was skeptical of how that would end up looking in the finished movie. The crew pulled this off beautifully, and even though the animals are talking they seem so natural in the film. I truly felt immersed in the story, with my mind never breaking away from the story’s version of reality. One could easily get lost in the story and the visuals and forget that you are watching a film due to the level of photo realism (talking animals and all!).

Something else I was blown away by was the film’s score, composed by John Debney. The score seamlessly wove together the moments of warmth and love with moments that were adventurous and thrilling. And something I particularly loved, which I think all of you Disney fans out there will appreciate, were pieces of songs from the 1967 animated film interwoven into pieces of the score. I could go on more about the music and sound, which you can check out more here, where I document “The Jungle Book” press conference.

And of course, the acting was brilliant. How could it not be with such an incredibly talented cast? When casting announcements were first being made, I was a bit confused. Christopher Walken as King Louie, Scarlett Johansson as Kaa; both wonderful actors but seemed like very unexpected casting choices. Director Jon Favreau’s casting instincts ended up being spot on. Him thinking outside the box really paid off, with each character being introduced on screen seeming exactly how you would hope to see these beloved characters portrayed, yet they still seemed exciting and fresh. Bill Murray seemed to be a match made in heaven to portray Baloo, and Sir Ben Kingsley also fit perfectly into the role of Bagheera. Neel Sethi, who plays Mowgli, did a stellar job in the role, despite this being his first major feature film. Truly, all of the actors were outstanding, and their voices seemed like a natural fit for each of their characters. All the actors put in an incredible amount of thought into the characters they portrayed, which they went into detail about at “The Jungle Book” press conference that I wrote about here.

The film was exciting, fast-paced, adventurous, and thrilling. At times I was gripping my seat in anticipation of what might happen next. The film is rated PG, and is one you can definitely see as a family, however for younger children around 7 or younger it might be scary at times. Most of it I don’t think would be scary for young children, but something to perhaps be aware of or talk to your children to warn them about ahead of time.

The movie exceeded my expectations, and had a perfect blend of nostalgia as well as new and unexpected material. I believe it’s a film that will really speak to Disney fans everywhere, and is a wonderful addition to the Disney live-action fairy tale movie line-up.

The film will be released in theaters April 15th, and tickets can be purchased here. I can’t wait to see what you all thought of this incredible movie!

Walt Disney World’s Giant Mickey-shaped Solar Facility is Up and Running

MickeySolar Panel

In keeping with Walt’s vision of establishing an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, Epcot has a new neighbor.  A 22 acre Mickey-shaped solar power facility designed to bring 5 megawatts of power to the Walt Disney World Resort area.

The facility is maintained by Duke Energy who will sell the solar power to the Reedy Creek Improvement District.   The facility, located near World Drive and Epcot Center Drive (west of the Epcot Resort area) is made up of 48,000 solar panels.  To put this in perspective, that is the equivalent to 1,000 standard rooftop systems.

The solar farm also makes quite an impression on the Disney landscape and as aerial views suggests is one heck of  Hidden Mickey.  The project is part of Duke Energy’s long-term strategic goal of building up 500 megawatts of solar energy in its service area by 2017.

In a statement released by  Duke Energy, Bill Warren administrator for Reedy Creek Improvement District stated: “Our new solar facility agreement is another example of how we are always looking for innovative ways to conserve our natural resources.  The use of solar energy builds on our commitment to protect the environment and is another step toward realizing our long-term sustainability goals.”

So is the solar farm officially the largest Hidden Mickey out there?  Surprisingly not.  The Mickey Forest just outside of  Clermont still holds the title at an astounding 60 acres.
