Disney removes crocodile jokes from the Jungle Cruise

JC

JC

Skippers on both the Disneyland and Disney World Jungle Cruise ride have been ordered not to tell anymore jokes about crocodiles eating children in the wake of Tuesday’s tragic event where a 2 year old boy was drown by an alligator near Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort.

The pun heavy Jungle Cruise was full of jokes about crocs eating children and even reference to the famous ‘Ginger Snaps’ crocodile.

Disney has not given word if the jokes will make a return in the future.

There is talk online that Disney will be cutting out crocodiles in some of their other rides and attractions, such as the Tick-Tock Croc in Peter Pan’s Flight and Louis the Alligator from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog which is set to take the stage for the first time tomorrow in the new Magic Kingdom castle stage show Mickey’s Friendship Faire.

“The grand opening of Shanghai Disney Resort is a celebration of creativity and collaboration, a triumph of imagination and innovation, and a testament to the strong partnership between Disney and China,” Iger said. “Together we have created an extraordinary destination, a magical place unique in all the world, where East meets West, the past meets the future, and anything is possible for those who believe. Honoring the Disney-Chinese partnership that created this resort, Iger and Chinese officials cut a red-and-gold ribbon to dedicate Shanghai Disneyland, the resort’s magnificent theme park. Joining Iger were Wang Yang, CPC Politburo Member and State Council Vice Premier, and Han Zheng, CPC Politburo Member and Party Secretary of Shanghai. Iger also shared a greeting similar to the one Walt Disney said on opening day for the original Disneyland, in 1955: “To all who come to this happy place, welcome.”

The Grand Opening ceremony marked the moment with music, pageantry and a stream of Disney characters, from Mickey Mouse and Snow White to Baymax and Jack Sparrow, in front of the iconic Enchanted Storybook Castle. A multi-generational choir performed a unique version of the Disney song, “When You Wish Upon a Star,” arranged in a Chinese style to reflect the balance of Disney magic and China’s cultural spirit at Shanghai Disney Resort. The ceremony also featured six performers holding enormous, brightly colored fans to represent the six lands of Shanghai Disneyland.

Pixar’s Finding Dory Movie Review

findingdory2
findingdory2

findingdory2

I have always been a movie buff. And being a movie buff, I love to talk about movies–not only my general likes and dislikes of the films I see, but I like to dissect them, looking at the different layers and try to really understand the story and character decisions. Whenever I go see a movie, what I look forward to the most is discussing them afterward with friends and family.

I have to admit, Finding Dory” has been one of the toughest movies ever for me to review.

“Finding Nemo” is one of my absolute Pixar films, and with having a thirteen year lapse between the first and the sequel, I had no idea what to expect. Off the bat, I realized the story couldn’t be predictable, because if it was an easy story to think up, it would have been made years sooner. Realizing this, I set some pretty high expectations, wanting a story that was intricate, unexpected, yet still seemed to fit naturally with the film’s established characters and settings. I was afraid that my excitement mixed with my expectations would set me up to not feel satisfied with the film.

The sequel picks up a year after “Finding Nemo” takes place, with Dory having the revelation that she has a family somewhere. The only problem is Dory doesn’t remember where they are. Because of Dory’s short term memory loss, she needs Marlin to help her on her journey, to assure she doesn’t get lost in the big blue. Throughout the film, she continues to have snippets of memories that reveal more about her storied past, all the while making new friends, taking risks, and breaking out of her comfort zone.

I was able to have the pleasure of seeing an early screening of “Finding Dory” at the Walt Disney Studio Lot in Burbank about a week ago, and having had several days to process the film, I still haven’t been able to stop talking about it each day, and has been on the forefront of my mind. It was definitely unforgettable.

The reason why this film has proved difficult for me to review, is because it is hard to put “Finding Dory” into words. The story was beyond what I expected, and had many signature Pixar moments of tear-jerking emotion. But unlike the format of many Pixar films where the movie opens with emotion, climaxes with adventure, and ends with happily ever after, this film toggled between all three of these things.

With Dory having short term memory loss, and is in general a very optimistic fish, she bounces back fairly quickly from a negative emotion or event. The audience is taken on a roller coaster of emotions, which really works to reveal the layers of Dory’s character that we never even knew we were there. The story is told in a way that we experience Dory’s life in the same fun, chaotic, and sometimes uncomfortable way she lives moment-to-moment.

A movie centered around the happy-go-lucky Dory could have easily been a slapstick, goofy adventure. It was shocking yet refreshing to see Pixar make bold moves by really dissecting every aspect about Dory, and learning more about this character than meets the surface. It’s overall message will really resonate with all of us, and our internal struggles and emotions we often push aside and don’t tackle head on in our own lives.

Where many films are either on opposite ends of the spectrum, being low in stakes and light in the storytelling and character development, or drawing on a plot too long or in too much serious, this film somehow finds the perfect balance. This is very telling of the level of story telling at Pixar studios, and how their films aren’t just “cartoons” but cinematic films that hold their own. They accomplished the perfect balance of fun, emotion, character development, adventure, and telling a story relevant to our modern time.

Although emotionally deep, kids will be able to grasp the general concept of everything going on, so I would say any age could go see it. With all honesty, this has quickly become my all-time favorite Pixar film, and I can’t recommend it enough to go see.

“Finding Dory” will be released nationwide June 17th.

The Kiddie Pool at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground is Closing Permanently

pools-cabins-at-fort-wilderness-resort-00

The small, square Meadow Kiddie Pool located at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground will be closing permanently on June 27, 2016.  The adjacent fenced in fort-themed water play area will stay open and includes tot-friendly slides and a splash area for young buckaroos. No official reason for the closure of the kiddie pool was provided by Disney but it is not related to the recent alligator incident at the Grand Floridian Resort and Spa.

The Resorts feature pool, Meadow Swimmin’ Pool, includes a 67 foot long corkscrew water-slide. The Wilderness Swimmin’ Pool is the leisure pool and features a whirlpool spa.

Disney’s FastPass+ Booking System not Functioning

Screen Shot 2016-06-15 at 1.05.13 PM

It appears that the Walt Disney World FastPass+ booking option for both the My Disney Experience website and the app are currently not working for users. When guests try to make FastPass choices they are told that the total amount of Fastpasses for the day have been completed, which isn’t true. I wasn’t even able to choose a park for my FastPasses, it just automatically said all Fastpass distributions were done for the day. Fastpasses that have already been chosen have not been affected, and if you are at the parks, and already have them set, you will be fine; but you can no longer choose Fastpasses through any of the other options either.

Disney is aware of the issue and is working on it, but they aren’t sure when the system will be up and running again.

We’ll keep you posted as we know more.

Finding Dory Press Conference – Part 2

The cast at the Finding Dory Press Conference at the Montage Beverly Hills
The cast at the Finding Dory Press Conference at the Montage Beverly Hills

In the first round of “Finding Dory” press conferences, it was incredible to hear from such seasoned Pixar crew as producer Lindsey Collins and Academy Award winning filmmaker, and this movie’s director Andrew Stanton.

For the second panel, there was yet another amazing panel! In attendance were: Albert Brooks (Marlin), Hayden Rolance (Nemo), Eugene Levy (Charlie), Ty Burrell (Bailey), Kaitlyn Olsen (Destiny), Ed O’Neill (Hank), and of course Ellen DeGeneres (Dory).

IMG_6029
Albert Brooks (Marlin) and Hayden Rolance (Nemo)

Hayden Rolance, although playing the returning role of Nemo, is a new cast member to this film. Rolance recounted that it felt unreal, having already been a fan of “Finding Nemo,” it felt like a dream come true to get to play a role he never imagined possible to play.

No stranger to these movies, Albert Brooks stepped back into his role, Marlin. He said since the crew on these films are so amazing, along with the incredible writing, it was a breeze re-visiting a role he hadn’t played for 13 years. It was as if no time passed at all. Brooks also said he can easily relate to Marlin, as they have some similarities. Having been a writer for some many years, he said that he has to naturally be very analytical and aware of his surroundings. So in that regards, he can relate to Marlin’s over awareness. Unlike Marlin though, he said he tries not to sweat the small stuff.

Eugene Levy (Charlie, Dory's Dad)
Eugene Levy (Charlie, Dory’s Dad)

Eugene Levy plays the new role of Charlie, Dory’s father. Levy has played many movie fathers, saying that those types of roles really resonate with him, since family roles seem quite tangible and real. He feels he can pour himself into those types of roles and really have fun with them. Levy found the “Finding Dory” script particularly touching not and emotional. Even though often he did his voice recordings alone, it felt doable to still perform his role to its fullest potential, since the writing and directing were so superb and dug into the layers of each character.

Kaitlyn Olsen (Destiny) and Ty Burrell (Bailey)
Kaitlyn Olsen and Ty Burrell

Kaitlyn Olsen plays whale shark Destiny, and Ty Burrell plays Beluga whale Bailey. These two play tank neighbors in the film, and both had a blast getting to do comedic acting for a Pixar film. Olsen described their roles as having a brother and sister relationship; their characters annoy each other, but they ultimately love each other. Burrell had a similar fun experience. When he originally came in to record, he had over-thought and over-prepared, feeling a little nervous about making a good impression with Pixar. Director Andrew Stanton, however, instantly helped him feel at ease and assured him to just be himself so that himself and the character would naturally mesh together. Burrell said everyone at Pixar was so down-to-earth, creative, and talented. He feels a major part of the reason why Pixar films are so incredible and unique is because Disney and Pixar address serious topics in their films that kids ask questions about, but often aren’t discussed. It helps inspire conversations between kids and adults on explaining more complex topics in life.

Ed O'Neill (Hank)
Ed O’Neill (Hank)

Ed O’Neill plays the octopus Hank. He described his role as being the “Dory” of the sequel, since he was the sidekick for this film. Since Ellen campaigned on her show for so long to have a “Finding Nemo” sequel created, O’Neill joked that he will for years to come be a recurring guest star on her show to campaign for a third movie, “Finding Hank.”

IMG_6043
Ellen DeGeneres (Dory)

After years of joking about a “Finding Nemo” sequel, she was ecstatic when she got the call that one was finally being made, and was surprised to hear it would be centering around Dory. She loves playing this character since she is so genuine, yet has so many layers. DeGeneres tries to be like Dory as much as she can be in her own life; full of kindness, non-judge mental, no resentment, and full of optimism and a can-do attitude. She loves that Dory believes anything is possible, and that no one is wrong with anyone else, regardless of their flaws. With “Finding Dory,” DeGeneres enjoyed exploring the layers to Dory in this script. She felt the writing was so real and emotional, which made it easy for her to feel in-touch with her role in the sequel.

It was a fabulous, once-in-a-lifetime experience to hear the actors and creative team behind these classic films talk so in-depth about “Finding Dory”, and got me even more excited to see the film! You can catch “Finding Dory” in theaters June 17th.
