Disney Will Receive Tax Break for New Hotel in Anaheim

dlandhotel

Earlier this year it was officially announced that Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA will be building a fourth hotel on property. This seems to be a wise decision, as construction of Star Wars Land broke ground in April of this year, ticket sales are sure to soar once the new expansion opens. In addition, it was speculated that the main reason Disney made plans to create a new hotel was due to the city of Anaheim allowing a 70% tax break on their transient occupancy tax for any new four diamond-rated hotel.

The new hotel, though without a name at this point, already has concept art developed, and plans for a restaurant that would have view of the fireworks. The hotel would be placed where the Lilo parking lot is now at the Downtown Disney District.

On Tuesday July 13th, the Anaheim City Council met for a lengthy debate on whether or not Disneyland’s planned luxury hotel would make the cut to receive the proposed tax break, which would equate to about $267 million over a span of the next 20 years. In a 3-1 vote, it was confirmed that the new 700-room hotel would indeed receive the tax break.

However, not everyone in the City Council was for it. Anaheim’s Mayor Tom Tait was against it, feeling that Disneyland was not in need of the tax incentive. While others felt the incentive would greatly benefit the city of Anaheim, since it would be giving Disney a $267 million tax break, but the hotel would bring in about $400 million in taxes. As opposed to now, wherein the parking lot where the future hotel would stand is only bringing in $1.1 million taxes for Anaheim.

The new Disneyland hotel would open sometime in 2021.

Disney Lawsuit split into two separate cases

CastleDay

The judge in a lawsuit against Walt Disney World has decided the case of Xonia Book vs Walt Disney World must be split into two separate cases. Book, a plainclothes operative is suing Walt Disney Parks and Resorts for the second time and suing the Walt Disney World security director, Melissa Merklinger.

Disney had originally requested this split according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Book, a Colombian native, originally sued Walt Disney World in 2014 citing discrimination by her managers, she lost that case. She is now claiming that Disney has retaliated against her for the original suit. This is will be one part of her lawsuit.

In what Disney is calling an entirely separate set of allegations, Book claims that Melissa Merklinger, Disney World security director, assaulted and battered her, grabbing her and attempting to kiss her on the mouth at a company event last year.  Book also filed a complaint with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office who forwarded the complaint to the State Attorney’s Office, they declined to prosecute.

In a motion Disney claims the two lawsuits are two separate issues, there would be different witnesses and theories.

They said:

“The inclusion of these claims in the same action will only make the action longer than necessary and serve to confuse a jury hearing such unrelated claims,”

A Disney spokeswoman said there are no merits to the lawsuit and Merklinger was unavailable for comment.

Boeing Named as Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex Heroes & Legends Corporate Sponsor

Kennedy Space Center

Kennedy Space Center

Chief Operating Officer of the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Therrin Protze, has announced the Boeing Company as the title sponsor of the upcoming attraction Heroes & Legends, featuring the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.  This news marks the first time in more than 50 years that the visitor complex has entered into an agreement with a corporate sponsor.

“It is so fitting that the Heroes & Legends experience will bear the Boeing Company name,” Proetze said.  “As a leader in the human exploration of space, Boeing brings such a rich history and exciting future.  Their team is as passionate as we are to share the stories of the heroic men and women who have sacrificed so much and inspired so many.”

During the June 30, 2016 ceremony, a ten-foot long silhouette of an X-15 rocket plane was raised to the top of the building.  The X-15, which was manufactured by a legacy Boeing company, North American Aviation, flew for nearly a decade, achieving hypersonic speeds and exploring the upper edge of the Earth’s atmosphere.  Its technology contributed to the development of the historic Mercury, Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs.  A permanent replica is being designed and will appear to be launching toward space from the top of the building as a visual icon representing Boeing’s contributions to the past, present and future of human spaceflight.

“Florida’s Space Coast is the hallowed ground of all human launches from American soil.  There are so many firsts here and we’re pleased to be the first corporate sponsor of a major attraction at Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex,” said John Elbon, Vice President and General Manager of Boeing Space Exploration.  “As Boeing celebrates its 100th year,it’s appropriate that we join the visitor complex and NASA to share the exciting journey ahead of human spaceflight with visitors from around the world.”

Slated to open on November 11, 2016, and positioned just inside the entrance of Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, Heroes & Legends will set the stage for the guest experience by providing the emotional background and context for space exploration and the legendary men and women who pioneered and continue our journey into space.  Through engaging storytelling, guests will embark on an awe-inspiring experience that begins with an immersive exhibit designed to spark thought and discussion about how society defines a hero.  Then, through cutting-edge technology, interactive elements and engaging exhibits, guests will be introduced to the heroes of space.

The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex offers something for every age group.  From its outdoor Rocket Garden and the Kennedy Space Center tour, to the IMAX 3D films and the new Cosmic Quest, you can easily spend an entire day exploring and learning here. The Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex opens at 9:00am daily and is 45 minutes from Orlando, Florida.  Be sure to mark your calendars for the grand opening of the all-new Heroes & Legends attraction, featuring the U.S. Astronaut Hall of Fame on November 11th of this year.

Disney Hollywood Studios Archway

The Kissimmee Police Department are searching for the driver of a large truck/suv that was involved in a hit & run with a Disney Cast Member on his way to work on July 5th.

Harold Gist a chef at Disney’s Hollywood Studios was riding his motorcycle early in the morning around 3:30 a.m. on Fortune Road between Simpson Road and Bill Beck Boulevard.

According to the Orlando Sentinel, Gist was allegedly hit by the large vehicle and “flung into the roadway before being hit by another vehicle traveling in the same direction.”

The second vehicle involved in the accident stayed on scene, but the truck/suv that hit him first fled the scene. Officers are not certain of its make or model but are hopeful they can determine it from a nearby traffic camera.

Adriel Gist said his family forgives the driver but wants that person to come forward so justice can be served.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. If you have any information please contact the Kissimmee Police Department.

The store, which features two floors of Coke-related merchandise and clothing for sale, opened at the retail and entertainment complex earlier this month. The exterior’s design is meant to look like a 1920s bottling company, but it’s also enclosed, symbolically, in green-tinted glass a la traditional Coke bottles. It’s located near the Planet Hollywood restaurant, which is currently being refurbished, and the Orange parking garage.
