“Cars 3” First Look, Meet The New Crop of Cars

CARS 3

If you caught that edge-of-your-seat teaser trailer back in November, you’ll know that a major shake-up is in store for pro racer Lightning McQueen (voiced once more by Owen Wilson). In round three, a disastrous brush with mortality spurs the once-great athlete to reexamine his tenure on the track.

“McQueen is not the young hotshot anymore, the kid he was back then in Cars 1,” says first-time Pixar director Brian Fee, a storyboard artist on the first two Cars films and the man entrusted by story guru/Cars whisperer John Lasseter to take the wheel. “He’s in the middle of his life, and as an athlete, that’s getting up there. You have your whole life ahead of you, yet your career is starting to show its age. He’s looking in the mirror and realizing, ‘I’m 40 years old,’ and dealing with the fact that the thing that you love more than anything else, you might not be able to do forever.”

It doesn’t help that a new, faster generation of racers is eager to leave the rehabilitating Lightning in the dusty past. Armie Hammer joins the Cars voice family as the most vocal head of this new wave of tech-savvy drivers — meet the villainous Jackson Storm:

Fee explains, “Jackson was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. Everything comes easy to him, and everything about him says he’s faster, so much so that we’ve designed him so that even when he’s standing next to McQueen, McQueen looks old.” Technologically, he’s lightyears ahead of Lightning, a legitimate reflection of the actual years that have passed in the real world since our introduction to the first Cars in 2006. After more than a decade, shiny new rival roadster Jackson represents the peak of real-time innovation. (P.S. No, there’s technically no Uber in Cars 3, because, as Fee says with a chuckle, “I would like to see a car drive inside another car and have them take them somewhere.”)

CARS 3

From an ideological standpoint, Jackson embodies the extreme entitlement that has come to plague millennial descriptions. “He thinks the world is his. He’s taking over. He’s owed it,” says Fee. “In a very broad term, I think of old football players with those little leather skull caps, and you think of football players now with all their armor, hitting so hard. It’s not the same game. What they did was not anything like what we do now. And that’s Jackson: He thinks the future of racing and the high-tech ways they train and what they can do means they’re taking the sport to a new level, and the older guys had their day, and it’s done, and they have no place in the future of racing.”

Yet there is a glimmer of hope for both the redemption of twentysomething honor and Lighting himself: New trainer Cruz Ramirez, voiced by Cristela Alonzo.

Cruz may be on Jackson’s side of the age gap, but she’s on Lightning’s side of the conflict. As a lifelong fan of McQueen, she’s optimistic, sunny, fierce, and friendly — and now, she’s his new, younger coach, coming to Lightning’s aid with stars in her eyes when he shows up at the Rust-eze Racing Center. “Whereas others like Jackson would look at McQueen and dump him, Cruz isn’t like that at all. She’s the most optimistic person in the world and wants to do anything to help,” says Fee, who was sold on Alonzo’s voice partly from her short-lived ABC series but primarily from her stand-up comedy specials. (For that matter, Hammer landed the role thanks to his pompous turn in The Social Network.)

CARS 3

Lasseter calls Cars 3 “very emotional,” and Fee says it’s “the most human” film of the franchise, considering the inherent maturity of Lightning’s reconciliation with age in a changing world. If it sounds as if this tale of mortality also has a sense of franchise finality to it (akin to Toy Story 3, though it’s no longer the finale), that’s still being kept under the hood; Fee is coy about whether Cars 3 marks the end of Lightning’s personal trilogy onscreen. “Where the franchise goes from here, I have no idea what may be down the road, but I can tell you that for Lightning McQueen, as a character, I think by the end of the movie it’s safe to say that this is only the
the beginning for him.”

Here’s a look at the latest souped up version of Lighting:

Girl Meets World”, the Disney channel spin-off of darling ’90s ABC sitcom “Boy Meets World”, has been canceled, the show’s writers confirmed Wednesday night. It lasted three seasons and 69 episodes.

“It is with incredible pride in our work and complete sadness that things end, that I report to this wonderful audience that our show is over,” the accounted tweeted. “I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes. We leave you with three incredible souvenirs of a show we couldn’t be more proud of. As I look back I can tell you with absolute certainty — we gave you our best.”

“Girl Meets World” followed Riley (played by Rowan Blanchard), akin to how the original show tracked her father Cory Matthews and his friends and family. Ben Savage reprised his role as Cory, as did Danielle Fishel as Topanga Matthews.

Rumors of the end of Girl Meets World recently bubbled up when Rider Strong — best known for playing Ben’s best friend, Shawn — implied during his podcast that the show had ended. The writers’ room spoke out against Strong’s comments.

“As much as I love Shawn Hunter, having created his character and everything, you have to remember that he was wrong a lot,” they wrote. “There is no official word as yet. Disney decision on season 4 coming soon. Officially, season 3 ends with 3 wonderful episodes in January.”
“Girl Meets World‘s” final episodes air Friday, and Jan. 13 and Jan. 20 at 6 p.m. ET on the Disney Channel.

Emma Watson To Narrate “Magic of Storytelling” PSA For Disney / ABC’s Disney Reads Day

Today, Disney and ABC announced it will donate up to one million books to First Book, a nonprofit that provides new books to educators and organizations serving children from low-income families, during its fifth annual Magic of Storytelling campaign from now through March 31. The campaign launches with a PSA voiced by Emma Watson, star of The Walt Disney Studios upcoming film “Beauty and the Beast,” coming to theaters on March 17. In the PSA, Watson highlights the impact of books on children.

The Magic of Storytelling campaign aims to inspire families’ imaginations, cultivate a lifelong love of reading in kids, and bring books to underserved communities across the country. Over the past 16 years, Disney has donated 57 million books to First Book. Together with First Book, Disney Publishing Worldwide and Disney|ABC Television Group are committed to placing up to one million more books in the hands of children in need across the country.

“We are so proud to have donated more than 57 million books through our long-standing collaboration with Disney,” said Kyle Zimmer, president and CEO of First Book. “Each year, the excitement around the Magic of Storytelling campaign grows, inspiring millions of individuals to help us bring much-needed new books to children in need.”

As part of the Magic of Storytelling campaign, families are encouraged to put everything else down, pick up a book, and read independently or together during the second annual nationwide Disney Reads Day on February 4. Families can do this at home by taking time to read their favorite books together, or visit a participating Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, or other retail location for story-time, themed activities, and giveaways.

From now through March 31, Disney book donations (up to a total of one million donations) can be activated through various ways:

• One for One Book Donation: Disney will donate one book to First Book for every eligible Disney book purchased at a Disney Store or participating retailer during that store’s participation window. (A list of eligible Disney books and participating retailers are available at magicofstorytelling.com.)
• Share a Shelfie: Disney will also give one book for every “shelfie” — a selfie photo with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf — shared on Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling.
• Disney Story Central: Users of Disney’s digital reading platform can download digital books designed for parents and children to read together. Disney will donate one book to First Book for every book read in the app.
• Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes: Consumers can enter to win a library of 400 Disney books for their school and a personal library for their home in the Magic of Storytelling Sweepstakes. For every sweepstakes entry, Disney will donate one book to First Book. To enter the sweepstakes and for more rules and information, visit magicofstorytelling.com.
• In-Store Events: Celebrate Disney Reads Day on February 4 at Disney Store, Barnes & Noble, and participating retailer locations nationwide. Families and fans can enjoy free family-friendly events like story time, coloring and activity sheets, and themed “shelfie” stations. A full list of participating Disney Store and retailer locations is available at magicofstorytelling.com.

“For more than 80 years, Disney books have brought children and parents together, sparking imaginations and inspiring dreams,” said Andrew Sugerman, executive vice president, content and media, Disney Consumer Products and Interactive Media. “We are thrilled to be part of a program that encourages a love of reading and makes these stories available to as many people as possible. We’re honored to continue our work with First Book to bring the Magic of Storytelling to kids in need around the country.”

Kevin Brockman, Executive Vice President, Global Communications, Disney|ABC Television Group added, “Storytelling and imagination are central to the entertainment we deliver to our viewers every day. We’re thrilled to celebrate our 16 year association with First Book through this campaign and excited to mobilize our multiple platforms to inspire kids and families to expand their imaginations and celebrate the importance of reading and storytelling.”

The Magic of Storytelling campaign comes to life across Disney|ABC’s extensive network of broadcast and digital platforms including MagicOfStorytelling.com, a website with activities and resources to encourage reading and shared reading experiences. Fans can also engage with Magic of Storytelling content on Disney’s network of social medial channels and digital publishing brands like Oh My Disney, Disney Style, Disney Family and Babble.

Inspired by “Beauty and the Beast”s iconic themes of reading, discovery and imagination, Emma Watson’s PSA will be shared with audiences across Disney including ABC affiliate stations, ABC Television Network, Freeform, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Store, Disney Cruise Line and Disney Resorts’ TVs, the ABC app, and Disney’s digital network of publishing brands including Oh My Disney and Babble. Additionally, each local ABC-owned station will donate 5,000 books to their local communities through schools and organizations in their respective markets.

Additionally, for the first time, The Walt Disney Company is extending the Magic of Storytelling campaign initiative to the educator community through focused outreach to schools and libraries, providing meaningful resources to facilitate in-class and in-home shared reading experiences. Resources include lesson plans, reading activities, and more. To find a participating retailer or learn more about Magic of Storytelling and Disney Reads Day, visit magicofstorytelling.com.

In Star Wars gossip from a galaxy far, far away… Rumor has it Woody Harrelson is in talks to join the Han Solo spin off film. Disney hasn’t officially commented on the rumors.

The film is set to begin production this month and will premiere in theaters May 25, 2018. Alden Ehrenreich will star as Solo; Donald Glover and Emilia Clark will also have roles in the film.

Much like “Rogue One: A Star Wars story“, this newest film will take place before A New Hope and will be a standalone film.

Signs Point to Late May or Early June Opening for Pandora – The World of Avatar

Pandora Summer 2017

Pandora Summer 2017

Last November, Disney officially announced that its newest Animal Kingdom expansion, Pandora – The World of Avatar would start captivating audiences in Summer of 2017 though no fixed date was announced.  However, Disney released a ticket offer yesterday that may have unintentionally given the game away.

Details went public of a Discover Disney ticket discount open to Florida residents and offering 3 and 4 day tickets at a reduced rate.  The tickets can be used between January 4th and June 9th, 2017 with one notable exception.  There are blackout dates at Animal Kingdom between May 27th and June 9th which would make perfect sense were Disney to be showcasing the opening of Pandora during this period.

Though Walt Disney World has not made an official announcement regarding an opening date, Memorial Day Weekend has historically been a time where Disney has released new offerings to attract Memorial Day crowds and create a buzz going into Summer.

Pandora – The World of Avatar is slated to be a marvel of modern technology and imagineering and will feature a Na’vi River Journey through a bio-luminescent rainforest as well as Avatar Flight of Passage which allows guests to ride a Banshee and enjoy a treetop view of Pandora.

Readers are encouraged to watch this space for the latest news and developments regarding the opening of Pandora – The World of Avatar.

Elephant Calf Named Stella Born at Disney’s Animal Kingdom

African Elephant Calf

elephant

Disney’s Animal Kingdom recently welcomed a new female elephant calf named Stella. Stella is the seventh elephant born at the park, increasing the African elephant herd to ten. Donna is Stella’s 28 year old mother, who also gave birth to two other female calves, Nadirah in 2005 and Luna in 2010.

Take a look as baby Stella explores the savanna at Kilimanjaro Safaris:

Donna became pregnant in January 2015 through natural breeding and received extensive pre-natal care throughout her pregnancy. She and her baby spent a short time together backstage before being introduced to the savanna in order to bond, begin nursing and get to know some of the other elephants in her family.

New Hidden Mickey Pins for 2017 to Collect and Trade at Disney Parks

New Hidden Mickey Pins

Disney Parks Blog has announced a collection of New Hidden Mickey pins coming soon to trade from Cast Members at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. You can start looking for these pins in early 2017 on Cast Member lanyards.

Both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts will be getting an assortment of new pins, there will be some available at both DL and WDW, and some that will be exclusives.

Disneyland Hidden Mickey Pin Collections:

Slide 1

At Disneyland you’ll find pins inspired by classic Disney attraction icons and signs from the Disneyland park. Characters from “The Jungle Book” animated movie will also be swinging around Cast Member lanyards in Disneyland. The silver-colored chaser pins which are rarer and match the full color pins have also made their return this year.

Walt Disney World Hidden Mickey Pins:

Slide 1

At the Walt Disney World Resort, you will be able to find pins inspired by Disney attraction icons, but inspired by the Parks in Florida. The Disney dogs are adorable and bone shaped! I think those will be the first collection I hunt. Characters from  “The Lion King” also make an appearance, on fun paw print shaped pins. The matching silver colored pins will also be available for collecting too.

You’ll be able to find both Villains, and Fruit collections are both parks, however the Hidden Mickey Fruit pins will be differ at both DL and WDW.

Which of the New Hidden Mickey Pins do you hope to add to your collection?
