Tour de Turtles This Saturday at Disney's Vero Beach Resort!

Disney’s Vero Beach Resort will serve as host this Saturday for Tour de Turtles. Disney Cast Members along with the Sea Turtle Conservancy will attach satellite transmitters to two loggerhead turtles. These satellite transmitters will allow the turtles to be tracked over their approximately three-month migration as they leave their respective nesting beaches and “race” to complete the iconic turtle marathon.

Here’s more information on this upcoming event:

By tracking these turtles the Disney’s Animals, Science and Environment can learn how we can better protect this endangered species. Updates will be posted throughout the event on the Disney’s Animal’s, Science and Environment Facebook page.

Watch Dan Drake Create Disney Inspired Pancake Art At D23 Expo

Have you ever heard of a “pancake artist”? At first it sounds a little crazy but Daniel Drake from “Dancakes” is the real thing. Daniel was featured at the Oh My Disney booth at D23 Expo 2017 and gave live demonstrations of his talent. He created some very beautiful (and very delicious) pancakes inspired by Disney characters.

Take a look at the video below to see Daniel in action making pancake art. He also gives some insight on how he started into this amazing line of work.

In my opinion they almost look too good to eat. What do you think?

Animal Kingdom Sumatran Tiger “Sohni” Is Expecting Tiger Cubs

Animal Kingdom Sumatran Tiger "Sohni" Is Expecting Tiger Cubs

Exciting news has come from Disney’s Animal Kingdom park. Sohni the Sumatran tiger is expecting baby cubs!

In late 2014 Sohni the Sumatran tiger was welcomed to Disney’s Animal Kingdom and made her home on the Maharajah Jungle Trek. Although not the first tiger to the park, she was the first Sumatran. That all changed one year later when Malosi, a male Sumatran tiger, also made his home at the Animal Kingdom.

Sohni, which means beautiful in Hindi, is expected to deliver her cubs in August. So if you have your trip scheduled this Fall, make sure you keep your eyes peeled for the new additions to the Animal Kingdom family.

Disney is also involved in efforts to save critically endangered Sumatran tigers around the world. To date, the Disney Conservation Fund (DCF) has provided nearly $2.5 million to protect tigers and their habitats.

Marty Sklar, Disney Legend and Imagineer, Has Passed Away At Age 83

Marty Sklar, Disney Legend and Imagineer, Has Passed Away At Age 83

We are deeply saddened to report that Legendary Disney Imagineer Martin A. “Marty” Sklar has passed away in his Hollywood Hills home on Thursday. He was 83. During an illustrious career spanning 54 years, Marty worked closely with Walt Disney and was instrumental in creating, enhancing and expanding Disney’s creative vision. Named a Disney Legend in 2001, he is best remembered and revered by fans around the world for his work bringing Disney’s theme parks to life.

“Everything about Marty was legendary – his achievements, his spirit, his career,” said Bob Iger, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The Walt Disney Company. “He embodied the very best of Disney, from his bold originality to his joyful optimism and relentless drive for excellence. He was also a powerful connection to Walt himself. No one was more passionate about Disney than Marty and we’ll miss his enthusiasm, his grace, and his indomitable spirit.”

Born in New Brunswick, N.J., on February 6, 1934, Marty was a student at UCLA and editor of its Daily Bruin newspaper when he was recruited to create The Disneyland News for Walt’s new theme park in 1955. After graduating in 1956, he joined Disney full-time, and would go on to serve as Walt’s right-hand man—scripting speeches, marketing materials, and a film showcasing Walt’s vision for Walt Disney World and Epcot. During this period, he also joined WED Enterprises, the forerunner of Walt Disney Imagineering, and he would later become the creative leader of Imagineering, leading the development of Disney theme parks and attractions for the next three decades. He retired as Executive Vice President and Imagineering Ambassador on July 17, 2009, Disneyland’s 54th birthday. Disney marked the occasion by paying tribute to Marty with the highest Parks and Resorts recognition, dedicating a window in his name on Disneyland’s City Hall.

“Marty was the ultimate Disney Imagineer and Cast Member. From his days working as an intern with Walt to just two weeks ago engaging with fans at D23 Expo, Marty left an indelible mark on Disney Parks around the globe and on all of the guests who make memories every day with us,” said Bob Chapek, Chairman, Walt Disney Parks and Resorts. “He was one of the few people that was fortunate to attend the opening of every single Disney park in the world, from Anaheim in 1955 to Shanghai just last year. We will dearly miss Marty’s passion, skill and imaginative spark that inspired generations of Cast, Crew and Imagineers.”

Bob Weis was one of those Imagineers. “Marty was one of Walt’s most trusted advisors and helped turn his most ambitious dreams into reality. For us, it’s hard to imagine a world without Marty, because Marty is synonymous with Imagineering,” said Weis, President, Walt Disney Imagineering. “His influence can be seen around the world, in every Disney park, and in the creative and imaginative work of almost every professional in the themed entertainment industry.”

Marty’s impact and achievements were recognized with a number of prestigious awards and accolades, including the Lifetime Achievement award from TEA (Themed Entertainment Association), induction into the Hall of Fame of IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions), and the prestigious Professional Achievement Award from UCLA.

He also authored several books about his experiences and adventures at Disney: Dream It! Do It!: My Half-Century Creating Disney’s Magic Kingdoms (2013), and One Little Spark!: Mickey’s Ten Commandments and The Road to Imagineering (2015).

Marty is survived by his wife of 60 years, Leah; son Howard and his wife, Katriina Koski-Sklar; grandchildren Gabriel and Hannah; daughter Leslie; and grandchildren Rachel and Jacob.

Marty and Leah were two of the founders of the Ryman Program for Young Artists, a project of Ryman Arts, a nonprofit foundation whose purpose is to teach and mentor “traditional” drawing and painting skills to talented young artists in Southern California. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Marty’s name to Ryman Arts at www.rymanarts.org.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family during this difficult time.

Four Beloved Attractions Return to Disneyland This Summer

Four Beloved Attractions Return to Disneyland This Summer

Heading to Disneyland this Summer? Well you are in for a real treat. New attractions mixed with the return of the park’s nighttime entertainment and classic favorites will keep you coming back for more.

The Disneyland Railroad, an original Disneyland attraction and park icon, re-opens July 29, 2017. This fan-favorite attraction now travels a new scenic route along the north bank of the Rivers of America, where it traverses stunning new rockwork and waterfalls providing guests with breathtaking views along both sides of the train. Guests also will enjoy this new landscape from the water as they welcome the return of the popular watercraft – Mark Twain Riverboat, Sailing Ship Columbia and Davy Crockett Explorer Canoes.

Kim Irvine, art director for the Rivers of America project, envisioned what it will be like for guests: “It’s hard to believe that right here, smack dab in the middle of bustling freeways and high-rises, you can enjoy a relaxing ride on an open-air train car and sail on a ship or canoe down a rolling river, surrounded by towering pine and oak trees with sightings of deer, elk, moose and beautiful waterfalls.”

Another classic, “Fantasmic!,” re-opened July 17 on the Rivers of America, telling the story of Mickey Mouse and his vivid imagination, Guests cheered as they welcomed back this nighttime spectacular’s classic theme song and the engaging storyline that has been treasured for 25 years. And explorers celebrated the re-opening of Pirate’s Lair on Tom Sawyer Island in June.

At Disneyland Park

Four Beloved Attractions Return to Disneyland This Summer

Once again, guests will enter Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom to the sounds of train whistles and chugging engines, a familiar part of the Disneyland Railroad. The steam-powered locomotives, among the few still operating today, take guests on relaxing and entertaining tour through the park. And, for the first time, engineers guide the trains on a left-hand turn in the park after they venture over a trestle that closely hugs a dramatic new shoreline along the Rivers of America in Frontierland.

Four Beloved Attractions Return to Disneyland This Summer

A gorgeous new Columbia Gorge section highlighted by five new picturesque waterfalls is the backdrop as guests enjoy their journey aboard one of Walt Disney’s favorite attractions. Landscapes inspired by four of America’s majestic rivers – the Mississippi, the Columbia, the Missouri and the Rio Grande – are carefully recreated, complete with indigenous rock formations, natural forests and wildlife, and the waterfalls.

The sounds will be as entertaining as all the sights as guests listen to singing birds, eagle cries, the whinny of an Indian Chief’s horse, a Riverboat captain’s voice, an emotional score and more. As the tour continues, conductors narrate the trip with stops at Mickey’s Toontown, Tomorrowland, Main Street, U.S.A., and New Orleans Square.

Four Beloved Attractions Return to Disneyland This Summer

Just before pulling into the Main Street Station, guests are transported to a new place and new time as they view dioramas of the Grand Canyon and Primeval World. Updated for the first time since opening in 1958, the Grand Canyon section creates a dramatic experience with refurbished flora and fauna, some fun surprises and the orchestral Grand Canyon Suite by Ferde Grofé. In the Primeval World, newly painted sets, dinosaurs and creatures blend with new effects and lighting.

For nighttime entertainment, “Fantasmic!” returns this summer featuring new scenes with characters from “Aladdin,” “Tangled,” “The Lion King” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.” One dazzling sequence finds Aladdin and Jasmine discovering “A Whole New World” as they float on their flying carpet over a bed of fog on the Rivers of America. The sensational “Fantasmic!” adventures come alive with new mist screens and innovative projection mapping technology to create visuals that are brighter and more vibrant than ever before.

Limited-Time Only Opportunities

While guests are enjoying the return of the popular Rivers of America entertainment, they are making sure to experience the family fun that will soon be gone.

The Main Street Electrical Parade continues nightly performances at Disneyland, through August 20, with favorite scenes such as Cinderella’s ball, the appearance (and disappearance) of Elliot, the smoke-breathing, tail-wagging “Pete’s Dragon,” and the glittering “To Honor America” finale.

And at Disney California Adventure Park, guests are screaming with thrills on the new Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission: BREAKOUT! attraction while they “Hero Up” and take in all of the excitement of Summer of Heroes. This epic celebration, which brings Super Heroes to life like never before in Hollywood Land, runs through Sept. 10, 2017.

Look for Breathtaking New Views on July 29th as the Disneyland Railroad reopens to Guests

Look for Breathtaking New Views on July 29th as the Disneyland Railroad reopens to Guests

Fascinated by everything from steam-powered locomotives to Walt Disney’s love of trains, fans of the Disneyland Railroad are eager to hop aboard once again for a narrated tour of Disneyland Park. They have eagerly anticipated the July 29 re-opening of this iconic attraction, almost as much as another group of fans who admire the Disneyland Railroad: the engineers and cast members who care for the trains year-round.

Robert Rodriguez, Norm Arakaki, John Scott and Craig Ludwick are part of the knowledgeable crew who work on the Disneyland Railroad. Their primary job is preserve the trains, keep them running smoothly and carry on the legacy of steam-powered transportation. Some of them have spent nearly 30 years maintaining, operating and even polishing these trains for their 365-day-a-year operation.

The engineers’ most recent task has been preparing the Disneyland Railroad for its new adventures through Frontierland, where guests will discover a breathtaking new view of stunning rockwork and waterfalls along both sides of the train. The trains will now travel over a trestle that closely hugs a dramatic new shoreline along the Rivers of America, and for the first time engineers will make a left-hand turn as part of the park tour.

Representing their team, these Disneyland Railroad experts signaled to guests what they can expect the next time they hop aboard, and also shared some thoughts about working on this unique attraction.

  • “Once our guests see those new waterfalls and the lighting and the amazing rock work … you’re going to hear them say, ‘Oh Wow! Look at that!” – Craig Ludwick
  • “The train passes really close to the back of Big Thunder Mountain, and you can actually see the reactions of guests on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as they come up over the climb.” – John Scott
  • “It takes well-trained people who care about what they’re doing to keep these trains running smoothly every day of the year.” – John Scott
  • “The trains are an icon of Disneyland. When you think of Disneyland, one of the first things that comes to mind is the Disneyland Railroad.” – Norm Arakaki
  • “Any way that we, as cast members, can inspire the guests to have a passion for these trains like Walt Disney did – that’s fantastic.” – Robert Rodriguez
  • “When you fire the locomotive, you need two components to make steam. You need a fuel source to fuel the fire and you need water. We actually burn bio-diesel and it’s environmentally friendly.” – Robert Rodriguez

These engineers also shared some of their favorite historical trivia and fun facts about the Disneyland Railroad:

  • The Disneyland Railroad features five steam engines along with four open-air cars easily identified by their red steel frames and striped awnings. The cars seat passengers in two different styles. In one style, guests face forward, toward the engine. In the other style, guests face the park. The second style was designed by Walt Disney to allow guests a full view of the sights on the Disneyland tour.
  • Engine 1, C.K. Holiday, and Engine 2, E.P. Ripley, were both built especially for Disneyland by WED Enterprises (now Walt Disney Imagineering) in Burbank, California, U.S.A.. The other engines, Fred Gurley, Ernest S. Marsh, and Ward Kimball, were later additions to the Disneyland Railroad.
  • Along with the C.K. Holliday, the E.P. Ripley was present at the opening ceremonies of Disneyland in July 1955. Walt Disney occasionally took the throttle of both trains for excursions around his park.
  • The Fred Gurley, the oldest of any engine on a Disney Park railroad, celebrated its 120th anniversary in 2014.
  • Whistles on a steam locomotive have a unique sound depending on the whistle’s shape, size, and pressure. At Disneyland, engineers have a tradition of blowing the whistle while pulling into the Main Street Station, alerting the crew to which train is arriving. Some of the engineers have even created a signature whistle.
  • Also popular on the Disneyland Railroad are two diorama scenes. The 306‐foot‐long Grand Canyon Diorama has been updated and guests will notice some fun surprises. They’ll also continue to enjoy the large background painting of the Grand Canyon created by Delmer J. Yoakum in 1958. It took more than 300 gallons of paint to create. Guests will notice exciting, new elements in the Primeval World Diorama, too.
  • Walt Disney’s love of trains was inspired by two of his animators, Ward Kimball and Ollie Johnston, railfans who had backyard railroads of their own. Walt visited their homes to take a turn in the cab and this left quite an impression; so much so that Walt started a train collection of his own.
  • Ward Kimball added a unique piece to his train-related collection: the Grizzly Flats Depot from a set piece built for the 1949 Disney film, So Dear to My Heart. The Grizzly Flats Depot was the model for New Orleans Square Station in Disneyland Park and it was acquired in 2007 by John Lasseter, now chief creative officer of Pixar and Walt Disney Animation and principal creative advisor for Walt Disney Imagineering.
  • Disney animator Ollie Johnston was the owner of the Marie E. engine, which is credited with inspiring Walt Disney’s Carolwood Pacific and Disneyland Park.

Stack Up the Charge with a Cute Tsum Tsum Portable Charger

Tsum Tsum Portable Charger

A back-up charger is a must have for my park going accessories, especially when I plan for a full day. I used to just carry around a plain old solid colored one, but now there’s so many options to add a little Disney magic! I love Tsum Tsums, and pretty much anything that’s super adorable, so I loved this Tsum Tsum Portable ChargerStack Up the Charge with a Cute Tsum Tsum Portable Charger.

The Tsum Tsum power bank is a 2200 mAh molded plastic battery Pack and has a LED power indicator. There is one Micro USB Input port that charges the power bank with a USB to Micro USB cable, along with the one Input port USB that charges iPhones and most smartphones. I would totally pair this with a Tsum Tsum phone case for a day at the parks.

Would you use this Tsum Tsum Portable ChargerStack Up the Charge with a Cute Tsum Tsum Portable Charger to stay charged while having a day at the Disney Parks?

Passengers of Several Airlines Advised to Arrive 3 Hours Early to Orlando International Airport Departures

Passengers of Several Airlines Advised to Arrive 3 Hours Early to Orlando International Airport Departures

If you are flying one of these 15 airlines in the next 8 months, officials are advising you to arrive at Orlando International Airport at least 3 hours early for the next eight months. The airlines affected are:

  • Aer Lingus
  • AeroMexico
  • Air Berlin
  • Air Transit
  • Avianca
  • Azul
  • Copa
  • Eastern
  • Frontier
  • Icelandair
  • JetBlue
  • Miami Air
  • Norwegian
  • Sunwing
  • WestJet

The advisory has been issued due to construction on the tram that services gates 1 to 29. These gates will only be serviced by one tram during the eight month period.

JetBlue has released this statement about the situation: “We recommend arriving at the airport three hours prior to your flight departure, and please be sure to check the status of your flight online or via the JetBlue app prior to arriving at the airport.”

We have not heard from Disney how this will effect guests using the Magical Express. The Magical Express typically picks up guests from their resort around three hours prior to their scheduled departure date. With this change, guests will now need to be picked up around four hours prior to departure.
