These improvements aim to reduce waiting times, streamline operations, and maintain the airport’s reputation as a world-class travel hub. Here’s a closer look at what’s happening:

Background on MCO’s Baggage Handling Challenges

When MCO opened in 1981, its baggage handling system was designed to accommodate passenger volumes of that era. However, following the 9/11 attacks, enhanced safety and security protocols introduced additional demands on the system. Over the years, MCO’s passenger numbers have surged—50 million travelers passed through in 2019, climbing to nearly 58 million in 2023. The system now processes thousands more departing bags daily than just a few years ago, highlighting the urgent need for upgrades.

Near-Term Solutions: Express Service Providers

To ease the strain, GOAA adopted a new policy in September 2024, expanding the use of Express Service Providers (ESPs). These third-party vendors will help streamline operations by routing outbound luggage to a Remote Screening Facility and delivering inbound bags directly to off-airport resorts and hotels. This strategy will alleviate congestion in high-traffic processing areas and improve the overall baggage flow. New ESP operations are expected to begin by summer 2025.

Midterm Solutions: Upgrades to Screening Pods

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is spearheading upgrades to the physical screening equipment in MCO’s baggage handling areas, known as pods. One key project, focusing on Pod E, will enhance ethernet, IT, and encoder equipment to improve efficiency and productivity. These improvements will enable MCO and TSA to process passenger bags more swiftly and reliably.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: A “Hole” Lot of Refurbishment Going On!

Hold onto your hard hats, folks, because Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Disney’s Magic Kingdom is undergoing some seriously “rocky” renovations! The attraction will be closed for the remainder of 2025 and part of 2026 as crews work to make the wildest ride in the wilderness even wilder.

Closer Look at the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Refurbishment at Disney World 2

As we “mined” for information, we spotted:

Orange cones and plywood pieces scattered across the mountain range
Scaffolding next to the track that curves over the Rivers of America
Red straps attached to the wooden framework and scaffolding
Plywood with “Hole” spray-painted on it (looks like they found the “motherlode” of renovation projects!)
Another prop tagged with a green tag (perhaps a “green light” for more updates?)

Crews were hard at work, with large white bags and green tarps nearby. They’re really “drilling down” on these improvements! The track removal and additional scaffolding suggest this refurbishment will be as extensive as the Disneyland version, which included a complete track replacement and upgraded effects.

While the exact details remain a “mystery mine,” we’re excited to see how Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will “rock” our world when it reopens. Until then, we’ll just have to “prospect” other Magic Kingdom attractions for thrills. Stay tuned for more updates on this “dynamite” development!

Disney Cruise Line Updating Luggage Tag Designs 1

Disney Cruise Line Introduces New Luggage Tag Format

Disney Cruise Line is making an exciting change to its luggage tag format to improve and streamline the luggage handling process for guests. The new tags, which the cruise line began sending out to guests last week, feature color-coding by ship and a more prominent display of stateroom numbers.

Under the updated system, each ship in the Disney fleet will have its own designated luggage tag color:

Disney Magic: Green
Disney Wonder: Orange
Disney Dream: Blue
Disney Fantasy: Purple
Disney Wish: Maroon
Disney Treasure (upcoming): Yellow

In addition to the ship-specific color scheme, the new tags incorporate several other enhancements:

Concierge tags will now use the same color as non-Concierge tags for that ship, but will be distinguishable by a crossed-key icon. This change applies to both the pre-printed tags mailed to guests and the generic ones available at the port.

For guests with guarantee stateroom bookings, the updated luggage tags include a blank space to write in the assigned cabin number after receiving it. Additionally, stateroom numbers are printed in a larger font size for better visibility and the new tag design eliminates the barcode previously used.

Disney emphasizes that the luggage tag distribution timeline and port check-in process will remain unchanged. Guests will continue to receive their tags on the same schedule prior to sailing. At the port, guests arriving without pre-printed tags can still obtain generic ones from the porters, with both Concierge and non-Concierge versions available.

As the luggage tag update is being implemented mid-season, Disney notes that during the transition period, guests on the same sailing may have a mix of old and new tag formats. However, the company assures travelers that this will not affect luggage delivery. Guests who already received the prior version do not need to request a reprint of the updated tags.

Iconic Marquee for Voyage of the Little Mermaid Show Removed

Disney’s Hollywood Studios has officially removed the iconic Voyage of the Little Mermaid marquee sign from the front of the building.

During a recent visit to Disney’s Hollywood Studios, we noticed that the iconic Voyage of the Little Mermaid marquee sign has been removed. This removal could signify several possibilities. It may be a precursor to a new marquee sign for the upcoming “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure” show, set to debut later this year. However, given the recent investment in the original marquee, it’s also possible that it will be reinstalled, perhaps with some modifications.

The Voyage of the Little Mermaid billboard is still on the side of the building. It will likely be updated as well closer to the opening of “The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure.”

“The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” will call the same Animation Courtyard theater home as its predecessor, “Voyage of the Little Mermaid.” Following the COVID-19 pandemic closure in 2020, “Voyage of the Little Mermaid” did not reopen. Disney announced the new show in late 2023, promising a refreshed theater experience alongside the production. Initially slated for a fall 2024 debut, “The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” has since been delayed to this year.

“The Little Mermaid — A Musical Adventure” will feature all-new puppets alongside digital imagery and motion capture to bring King Triton, Ursula, and Ariel’s sisters to life. The show will introduce the song “Daughters of Triton,” performed by Ariel’s sisters, which was not included in the previous production. Notably, Ursula will make a live appearance on stage, adding a new dimension to her character.

Disney Cruise Line has Increased its Gratuities

An increase in gratuities will be implemented for all Disney Cruise Line sailings commencing on or after January 23, 2025.

To better recognize the exceptional service provided by the crew, Disney Cruise Line will increase the recommended pre-paid gratuities for non-Concierge Guests by $1.50 per person, per day, effective January 23, 2025. This adjustment will benefit the Assistant Dining Room Server, Dining Room Server, and Stateroom Host/Hostess, with the new total recommended gratuity set at $16.00 per person, per day.

The recommended pre-paid gratuity increase for Concierge Guests is $3.75 per person, per day, effective January 23, 2025. This adjustment encompasses gratuities for the Assistant Dining Room Server, Dining Room Server, Stateroom Host/Hostess, Assistant Stateroom Host/Hostess, and the Concierge Lounge Team. The revised total recommended gratuity is $27.25 per person, per day.

Guests who have already pre-paid gratuities for an upcoming sailing will not increase to the new pricing.
