The Walt Disney Company and Abu Dhabi’s Miral, a leader in creating immersive experiences, announced this morning, May 7th, their agreement to develop a major Disney theme park resort in the United Arab Emirates. Miral will fully develop and build the new resort. Disney and its legendary Imagineers will lead creative design and operational oversight to provide a world-class experience. Miral, which has developed a number of family entertainment destinations on Yas Island, Abu Dhabi in collaboration with American and European brands, will operate the resort.

The UAE is located within a four-hour flight of one-third of the world’s population, making it a significant gateway for tourism. The UAE is home to the largest global airline hub in the world, with 120 million passengers traveling through Abu Dhabi and Dubai each year.

Disney’s Experiences Segment Drives Q2 Profit Surge, Reaching $2.5 Billion

The Walt Disney Company’s second-quarter earnings report for fiscal year 2025 revealed a significant boost in profits, largely driven by the robust performance of its Experiences segment. This division, encompassing the theme parks, Disney Cruise Line, and consumer products, saw its operating income reach $2.5 billion.

Overall, the company reported a 7% increase in total revenue for the quarter, amounting to $23.6 billion. The segment operating income experienced an even stronger surge, climbing 15% to $4.4 billion.

Disney Profits Surge in Q Driven by Theme Parks and Cruise Line

Experiences Segment Highlights

The Experiences segment stood out with an operating income of $2.5 billion in Q2, marking a $200 million increase compared to the same period in the previous year. Notably, the Domestic Parks and Experiences saw a 13% rise in operating income, reaching $1.8 billion.

Several factors contributed to this growth, including higher attendance at the theme parks, increased spending by guests, and the expansion of Disney Cruise Line’s capacity with the recent launch of the Disney Treasure. Improved performance from Disney Vacation Club also played a role.

However, the report also indicated a rise in expenses within the Experiences segment, attributed to fleet expansion and pre-opening costs associated with upcoming ships. Approximately $35 million in pre-opening expenses were recorded during the quarter, primarily linked to the Disney Destiny and Disney Adventure, both anticipated to enter service later in the fiscal year.

Conversely, the International Parks and Experiences experienced a 23% decline in operating income, with performance at Shanghai Disney Resort and Hong Kong Disneyland being softer, aligning with broader economic concerns in China.

The Consumer Products division demonstrated strong growth, posting a 14% increase in operating income, mainly due to higher licensing revenue.

Future Outlook

Looking ahead, Disney remains optimistic about its Experiences segment, stating that bookings for the second half of the fiscal year at Walt Disney World are “solidly above prior year.” The company maintains its expectation of 6% to 8% operating income growth for the full fiscal year in this division.

Robert A. Iger, Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company, commented on the results, stating, “Our outstanding performance this quarter—with adjusted EPS up 20% from the prior year driven by our Entertainment and Experiences businesses—underscores our continued success building for growth and executing across our strategic priorities. Following an excellent first half of the fiscal year, we have a lot more to look forward to, including our upcoming theatrical slate, the launch of ESPN’s new DTC offering, and an unprecedented number of expansion projects underway in our Experiences segment. Overall, we remain optimistic about the direction of the company and our outlook for the remainder of the fiscal year.”

Company-Wide Financial Performance

The company’s net income before taxes increased significantly to $3.1 billion, up from $0.7 billion in Q2 of the previous year. Diluted earnings per share rose to $1.81, compared to a $0.01 loss in the same period last year. Adjusted EPS also saw substantial growth, climbing 20% to $1.45.

Segment Performance Overview

Linear Networks: Operating income experienced a modest 2% year-over-year growth.

Entertainment: Operating income increased by $0.5 billion to $1.3 billion.

Direct-to-Consumer: Operating income rose by $289 million to $336 million, with Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions reaching a combined 180.7 million, a 2.5 million increase from Q1.

Sports: Operating income decreased by $91 million to $687 million, impacted by higher programming costs and a write-off related to the Venu joint venture. However, ESPN domestic revenue saw a 7% increase, and sports advertising revenue jumped by 29%.

This latest filing reveals that Mecca Productions will be the contractor tasked with “Install set elements,” indicating further enhancements to the beloved attraction.

Adding to the set installation efforts at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, this is the second Notice of Commencement filed recently, with Icarus Exhibits named in a similar previous permit. Despite this new filing, which has a standard one-year expiration, the overall potential timeline for the refurbishment remains unchanged, as indicated by the DPR Construction permit valid until April 15, 2026.

New Construction Permit Filed for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to Install Set Elements

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom closed for refurbishment on January 6, 2025, with a current projected reopening sometime in 2026. Several permits have been filed in support of this work, each with varying potential durations. The longest-standing permit, held by DPR Construction, is set to expire on April 15, 2026. Permits for Coastal Steel and Icarus Exhibits share an expiration date of March 13, 2026, while the most recent permit issued to Mecca Productions, based on a standard one-year term from its filing, is expected to expire in July 2025. These permit timelines offer insight into the phases and potential duration of the ongoing refurbishment efforts.

L.A. Fire Heroes Honored with Special Cavalcade at Disneyland

A Hero’s Welcome: Disneyland Honors L.A. Firefighters

Disneyland Park paid tribute to local heroes on Monday, May 5th, with a special cavalcade honoring Disneyland Fire Department firefighters Mark McLean and Larry Chu, alongside six other brave firefighters and police officers. The procession recognized their courageous frontline response to the devastating Los Angeles fires of January 2025.

The celebration marked the first day eligible California firefighters, Los Angeles-based law enforcement personnel and emergency medical technicians, who helped combat the LA fires, could use their complimentary Heroes Tickets for themselves and a guest to visit The Happiest Place on Earth.

Mark, the third in this family to be a Disneyland Resort firefighter after his uncle and father, has dedicated the past 21 years to fighting fires for the Los Angeles Fire Department and an amazing 15 years with the Disneyland Fire Department.

As soon as he clocked out from his shift at the resort the night the Palisades Fire broke out, Mark headed straight to his station where he would remain on duty for 23 days straight.

“We don’t think of ourselves as heroes, being a firefighter is just a career or profession that we enjoy doing,” Mark shared. “It is humbling that you chose us out of all of the men and women in fire service.”

All heroes were joined by family members, who were also honored in the cavalcade for their role in supporting the heroes while they worked during the LA fires.

Mark’s father, David McLean, joined in the cavalcade supporting Mark, along with Mark’s wife and mother. David joined Disneyland Resort after more than 30 years in the firefighting profession and has been with the resort for more than 15 years.

“I’m really proud of him,” David said beaming with pride while talking about his son. “He is a good hard worker, and he sure loves working at Disneyland. You can’t beat working here with my son!”

Disney Supports Rebuilding Efforts Across Los Angeles 

The Heroes Ticket is one of the many ways The Walt Disney Company is supporting relief efforts in the community: 

  • In January, the company announced a $15 million commitment for immediate response and rebuilding efforts in the Los Angeles area. 
  • Disney VoluntEARS hosted donation drives to collect more than 200,000 essential items for impacted individuals and families. 
  • A Disney LA Strong t-shirt is available for purchase now on DisneyStore.com as a symbol of community support, and a reminder that together we have the strength to rebuild and heal. For each t-shirt sold in the U.S. through December 31, 2025, Disney will donate $25 to the American Red Cross to help people affected by the fires in California during 2025.

The Magic Begins: 70th Anniversary Decorations Installed in Downtown Disney

As Disneyland Resort gears up for its official 70th Anniversary Celebration kicking off on May 16, 2025, a touch of the magic is already appearing in the Downtown Disney District. Colorful decorations, signaling the start of the year-long celebration of seven decades of Disney enchantment at Walt Disney’s original Magic Kingdom, are now popping up throughout the area. These vibrant additions are bringing a welcome burst of happiness.

The first 70th anniversary decoration we saw in Downtown Disney is just past the fountain as you head into the district from the park entrances. It is a statue featuring the number 70, a pink castle, and the motto for the celebration, “Celebrate Happy”. The ground around it is just dirt but signs say new plants are coming soon. In the concept art for this location, Ariel, Flounder, and Sebastian from The Little Mermaid were part of the decor. Hopefully they’ll be added later.

Two other signs identical to the first can be seen in Downtown Disney as well. One is in another water feature in the shopping district while the third is in a planter across from Sephora. That planter also has a sign announcing new plants will be coming soon.

The windows for World of Disney have also been updated with 70th anniversary decor. They now feature the bright colors associated with the celebration. One showcases Sleeping Beauty Castle with Tinker Bell flying above. The other windows have multiple characters surrounding “70 Disneyland”.

In a highly anticipated press conference held today (May 6), Ravensburger, the company behind the Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game (TCG), unveiled sweeping changes and ambitious plans for the future of the breakout collectible card game. Just two years after its debut, Lorcana has grown into a global sensation, boasting over 1,500 unique cards across seven sets, a fervent fanbase, and a growing competitive scene.

Now, with an eighth set arriving this summer and a pivotal ninth set, Fabled, scheduled for September, Ravensburger is signaling a bold evolution for the game—one that combines a sharpened focus on competitive play, an enriched collector experience, and a deeper expansion of Disney’s beloved characters and narratives.

Disney Lorcana first launched in August 2023 with The First Chapter, a 216-card set that reimagined iconic Disney characters in original artwork and new narrative contexts. It quickly captivated audiences with its blend of strategic gameplay and the emotional pull of Disney storytelling. Players assumed the role of Illumineers, summoning “glimmers” of familiar heroes and villains into a fantastical realm where lore, light, and magic intertwine.

What began as a curiosity among card gamers and Disney enthusiasts soon became a fixture in game stores, family rooms, and competitive tournament halls alike. Over the next 18 months, six more sets followed—each expanding the lore, gameplay mechanics, and collector possibilities. With its unique mix of accessibility and depth, Lorcana carved out a space in a crowded TCG market alongside giants like Magic: The Gathering and Pokémon.

At the May 6 press event, held at the company’s new Seattle-based creative headquarters, Ravensburger emphasized its commitment to fostering a robust, sustainable future for Disney Lorcana, starting with a serious investment in organized play and competitive formats.

A cornerstone of that vision will be the introduction of rotating formats beginning with the September release of Fabled, the game’s ninth set. For the first time, the early sets of Lorcana—specifically the first four—will rotate out of the primary competitive environment, known as Core Constructed. This format will now only allow decks built with cards from recent sets, beginning with set five onwards.

However, players won’t lose access to their full collections. A new format, dubbed Infinity Constructed, will support all Lorcana cards ever printed, offering a more casual but still competitive environment for those who wish to keep using their favorite glimmers from earlier sets.

“To keep the competitive game thriving, rotating out older cards to encourage new strategies and fresh deck designs is a really important part of the next chapter,” said Ryan Miller, Brand Manager and Co-Designer of Disney Lorcana TCG at Ravensburger. “But because we know there are cards in those early sets that are important to a lot of fans’ deck-building strategies, and we know not everybody got the cards they wanted the first year, we’re re-printing some cards from those first sets in Fabled. Including Enchanted versions of some fan favorites!”

Alongside the competitive revamp, Fabled promises to be a landmark release for collectors. The set will introduce two new rarities—Iconic and Epic—designed to heighten the excitement of booster pack openings and deepen the artistic range of the game.

Iconic cards, according to Ravensburger, will be “exceedingly rare,” with only two appearing per set. These cards will feature ornate foil treatments, exclusive illustrations, and special packaging to protect and display them. They are expected to become instant grails for collectors.

Epic cards, while more accessible than Iconic cards, will still offer a high-end collectible experience. These versions will include full-art treatments, shimmering textures, and reimaginings of classic Disney scenes and characters. They will appear more frequently than the current Enchanted cards—previously the highest rarity tier—making them a desirable but not unreachable goal for everyday players.

Before Fabled arrives in the fall, the story of Lorcana continues in Reign of Jafar, the eighth set in the series, which releases globally on June 6. Themed around the rise of the infamous vizier from Disney’s Aladdin, the set plunges players into a darker chapter of Lorcana’s evolving narrative.

Now wielding the mythical Hexwell Crown, Jafar has corrupted the magical realm of Archazia’s Island, filling it with illusions and deadly traps. Iconic characters like Jasmine – Steady Strategist and Rapunzel – High Climber must rally allies to mount a daring heist and reclaim the crown before the realm falls to darkness.

To accompany the set, Ravensburger is releasing Illumineers’ Quest: Palace Heist, a cooperative experience-in-a-box for up to four players. The boxed set pits a team of Illumineers against Jafar and his enchanted minions in a series of escalating challenges, offering a new way to enjoy the game beyond competitive or casual play.

Pre-release events for Reign of Jafar begin May 30 at local game stores and Disney store locations, with the full set hitting shelves on June 6. Pre-orders are now open at major online retailers.

Ravensburger also made clear that it’s looking beyond current TCG players to engage Disney’s wider fan community. To that end, the company announced new initiatives aimed at collectors and casual fans who may not be interested in competition, but still find joy in discovering characters, songs, and stories on gorgeously illustrated cards.

“The Collection Starter Set is the perfect way for Disney-lovers to jump into and start collecting cards showing off their favorite characters and moments from Disney classics,” said Chase. “Collecting is such a huge part of every trading card game and we want to show how Disney Lorcana rewards players with every pack of cards they crack open.”

Road to Glory: The First World Championship

As excitement builds around the future of the game, the competitive community has its eyes set on the first-ever Disney Lorcana World Championship, scheduled for June 28–29, 2025. Held at a yet-undisclosed location, the event will feature 28 of the world’s top players battling for the inaugural title of World Champion.

The tournament will be broadcast live on Twitch.tv/DisneyLorcana, with commentary from a lineup of fan-favorite casters including Rebekah (RebekahQuests), Baker (LorcanaVillain), Liam (The Illumiteers), Brandon (Bsquared24), and JD (JDZ Quest).
