Lucasfilm and Disney has released a new episode Science and Star Wars that focuses on the science of Artificial Intelligence.
In this week’s video, C-3PO actor Anthony Daniels joins researchers in the lab to explore how close real-world science has come to A.I. in the fields of medicine, education and technology.
Droids that run a fictional version of A.I. are some of the most memorable characters in Star Wars. From K-2SO to AP-5, A.I. is no longer science fiction fantasy, but something that collaborates with and augments human intelligence.
This latest episode features:
How a computer program can take all the dialogue from all 10 Star Wars films to decipher characteristics about C-3PO. The conclusion? C-3PO is “a friendly fellow, very tentative, but overall exquisitely agreeable.”
How A.I. helps doctors more accurately diagnose patients and teachers tailor lessons to ensure kids get the most out of their education.
How the visually impaired are aided with an app that targets location and beacons in the environment, helping them to move around in the real world.
Over the course of the series, Science and Star Wars explores science fantasy, science fact, and the gray area in between, every Tuesday on the official Star Wars Facebook page.
A first-of-its-kind national organization, the GRAMMY Music Education Coalition (GMEC) was announced today, formed with the goal of increasing the number of youth actively participating in music making in U.S. public schools. This nonprofit collective consisting of more than 30 of the nation’s most forward-thinking music education organizations, including the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), the NAMM Foundation (National Association of Music Merchants), VH1 Save The Music Foundation, and Lang Lang Foundation International Music Foundation, among others, is collaborating with communities for systems change through youth-centered music education that supports teachers and fosters opportunity for students to create, play and perform music together.
“The GRAMMY Music Education Coalition has one mission – to increase the number of students actively making music across the country with particular emphasis on underserved communities,” said Recording Academy President/CEO Neil Portnow. “The partnerships we are creating with school districts, teachers, parents and youth are designed to drive systemic change across geographies and communities nationwide.”
The first proposed beneficiaries of the program in Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools Music Makes Us, (Nashville, Tenn.), New York City Department of Education (New York, NY) and The School District of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, Penn.), will receive customized funding and strategic services based on school system needs assessments that will result in millions of new music makers and creators. The investments aim to provide program enhancements that drive active music making among students in public schools and allow for ongoing progress benchmarking and communication.
The GMEC model is one of transitional philanthropy, designed to work with participating school districts to lay the groundwork and implement robust music programs that will be independently sustainable. To date, more than $2,500,000 has been raised thanks to The Walker Family Foundation, ELMA Philanthropies and the GMEC board. The GMEC plans to expand its partnerships to include artists, additional school districts, corporations, non-profit organizations and foundations.
Children in majority low-income schools, more than 1.5 million elementary students, and 1 million secondary students, are disproportionately without access to music education.
“We know that the benefits of music education extend far beyond the classroom,” said Dr. Lee Whitmore, Executive Director of the GMEC. “By increasing the number of students actively making music, we are fostering the development of essential cognitive and social skills that better prepare them for success as well as beginning a lifelong appreciation of music.”
As a first step in offering music content on a national scale, GMEC has teamed up with Disney•Pixar’s “Coco” to bring best-in-class music from the film and learning content to teachers and youth. In theaters Nov. 22, “Coco” tells the story of 12-year-old Miguel, a self-taught guitarist who dreams of becoming a great musician. With support from The Walt Disney Studios and inspired by the film’s themes, GMEC is working with Berklee College of Music to provide new educational materials within Berklee PULSE, an online music education resource for students and educators.
“‘Coco’ is rooted in music,” said Adrian Molina, co-director, screenwriter and a songwriter for the film. “The film features traditional Mexican music and original songs—‘Remember Me’ [written by Academy Award®-winning songwriters Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez] and ‘Un Poco Loco’ [written by Molina and Germaine Franco] will be featured in the program, along with Mexican folk songs. We believe in GMEC and its mission and are honored to work with this organization.”
To inspire students to follow their musical dreams, Disney•Pixar’s “Coco” team will donate 300 Cordoba guitars to GMEC partners and Guitar Center, the world’s largest retailer of musical instruments and various musician-based in-house services, including Lessons, will donate an additional 300 Cordoba guitars with all 600 slated for delivery before the end of the year.
The GRAMMY Music Education Coalition (GMEC) is a first-of-its-kind nonprofit 501(c)(3) collective of more than 30 of the most forward-thinking music education organizations. We are leading systemic change at the elementary and secondary public-school levels by working with districts to provide needs-based grants, increase the number of students actively engaged in music instruction and music making, and build skills that benefit children academically, emotionally and socially. For more information on the GMEC and its education initiatives, visitwww.grammymusiced.org.

In 2011, Microsoft partnered with Disney to create two videos games for the Xbox, Disneyland Adventures and Rush: A Disney-Pixar Adventure which required the use of Kinect. Now both games have been re-released and available to play on both console and Windows 10 PC. Anyone can enjoy the game using the controller, mouse and keyboard, and Kinect. Both games have been remastered in 4K Ultra HD and HDR.
During a recent press event at the Disneyland Resort, we had the opportunity to get a first hand look at the new games as well as hear from Jorg Neumann, Head of Production, Microsoft Studios and John Dongelmans, Marketing Director, 1st Party Games.
“Rush: A Disney/Pixar Adventure” invites families and fans of all ages to experience the worlds of six beloved Disney/Pixar films like never before. Team up with characters from “The Incredibles,” “Ratatouille,” “Up,” “Cars”, “Toy Story”, and “Finding Dory” to solve puzzles and uncover hidden secrets.
Interact on screen with Pixar characters and play cooperatively to solve challenges. Move from fast-paced puzzle-solving to moments of pulse-pounding agility and speed.
Each world has three levels (Finding Dory has two) that tell a short story. As expected, they are packed with familiar characters, locations and situations from the Pixar films they’re based on. The goal of the game is to get through each level as fast as you can while collecting as many points as you can. Get points for gathering coins and collectibles along the way, and the faster you complete the level, the more points you score. At the end of each level, you’re awarded a bronze, silver, gold or platinum medal depending on your score.
Some other game features include, Save the day in your own fast-paced adventure. Invite the whole family to join Woody, Lightning McQueen and others in this one-of-a-kind Pixar experience. Explore and discover: Experience the sights and sounds of each Pixar world as you solve puzzles and uncover hidden secrets. You can also pick up where you left off on another Xbox One device or Windows 10 PC, bringing all your saves, game add-ons, and achievements with you.
Overall this is a great game for all who love Pixar characters, as well as provides a fun and safe gaming experience for younger children. Familiar voices from Pixar feature films help guide players in these very popular movies. And at $29.99 USD it’s not a bad investment. You can pick it up at any major retailer, on Xbox.com or in the Microsoft Store.
The 2nd game showcased at the event was to experience the magic of Disneyland like never before. You take a journey where stories come to life and dreams come true, right in your living room. Gamers get to explore Disneyland park from Main Street U.S.A. to Critter Country and join Peter Pan to battle Captain Hook, high-five Mickey Mouse or hug Snow White.
Disneyland Adventures allows children, families and Disney fans of all ages to explore Disneyland park, step into adventures based on attractions, engage in challenging quests and interact with beloved Disney characters.
There had never been a game created specifically about Disneyland Park, but the team had a strong plan felt confident in and pitched Disney on how this could be achieved. Disney really loved the idea and Microsoft has had a strong collaboration with them ever since. The team spent about five months exploring and examining Disneyland Park, they took over 50,000 photos, went to all the special and hidden places like Walt’s Apartment and Club 33, as well as had the chance to meet with legendary Disney Imagineers.
The developers wanted to pay homage to the magic that is Disneyland, so they wanted to make sure Disneyland Adventures is a digital version of the entire park. The team in collaboration with Disney created a very accurate re-creation of the park in digital form. If you know where to find your favorite attraction or coffee shop in the park, you’ll find it in the exact same place in the game. This game will make Disney fans excited to dig right in as if they were really there.
Other things that add to the fun and magic of Disneyland park are the hidden Mickeys, which everyone knows are an obsession for many people. This game includes many of the hidden Mickeys that are in the real park, plus a few newer ones as well.
And finally, the attractions in Disneyland Adventures is unlike any other. In the world of Disney, attractions are not just rides that you sit in and that’s it. For this game you actually jump into the world of the attraction with an adventure and story to tell. In Peter Pan you’re not just sitting in a vehicle flying through London, You get to actually fly through London collecting coins as you make your way to Neverland, where you face and battle Captain Hook and his crew. In Space Mountain, you feel like you’re in the world of Tron. The game features 18 iconic, interactive Disneyland Park attractions.
Overall Disneyland Adventures was fun to play, explore and see Disneyland Park in a different way. Whenever I can’t make it to the real park, I can now just load the game and pretend I’m there. The best part, no lines!
You can purchase the game now for $29.99 and pick it up at any major retailer, on Xbox.com or in the Microsoft Store.

And with the guess of a password it seems a new Disney Travel Planner is born!
A nine-year-old girl in the United Kingdom surprised her family with a trip to Disneyland Paris much to the dismay of her father. While Ian Wilson slept, nine-year-old Susan grabbed his phone and managed to guess his PayPal password. She went on to spend £400 on flights and a hotel gift card, £381.84 on tickets to the theme park and Disneyland Express train for the next day, and £214.08 on a VIP tour of the Eiffel Tower. It wasn’t until three days later, when £1005.92 disappeared from his account, that Ian realized what his daughter had done.
“My immediate thought was that it was fraud so I phoned PayPal who told me the the payments had been made from a device they deemed normal for me and (they) did not consider it to be fraud,” he stated. After reviewing his phone’s internet history he found several travel planning sites had recently been visited. After asking Susan about it, he learned that while she didn’t even know what the Eiffel Tower was, she somehow managed to book the entire trip.
Susan was immediately remorseful and offered to pay her father back when PayPal, Yorkshire Bank, and the travel companies initially refused to refund Wilson because no fraud had been committed. PayPal later declared it “friendly fraud” and returned the money.
So parents be warned – just because you say no to a Disney vacation for you little ones, that doesn’t mean they won’t just go and book one themselves!

A new three week refurbishment for Pirates of the Caribbean has been scheduled for next year. The beloved classic attraction will be down from February 26 through March 18, 2018 and reopening the following day, March 19th.
This new refurbishment is expected to bring the somewhat controversial change to the auction scene. Earlier this year, Disney announced that they would be removing the Redheaded Auction scene from all of the Pirates rides around the globe. This announcement was met with much disappointment from fans of the iconic attraction and several petitions were even formed.
The change has already been implemented at Disneyland Paris and you can watch the full video of their refurbished ride below:
What are your thoughts of the newly re-imagined Redheaded Auction scene?
