Danny Strong is Set to Pen Disney’s Upcoming “Oliver Twist” Film

Danny Strong

Disney’s “Oliver Twist” has a screenwriter.  Danny Strong will be the man behind the pen of Disney’s modern and musical take on this Charles Dickens’ classic.  Strong is the co-creator of Fox’s “Empire.”  While Strong has been in front of the camera on several popular television shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” and “Gilmore Girls, ” he is well known for his script writing.  Most recently Strong directed and wrote “Rebel in the Rye,” which starred Nicholas Hoult and Kevin Spacey.

Ice Cube is attached to the film to star and produce, while the Tony-winning director of Hamilton, Thomas Kail, is said to be directing.

Also signed on as producers are Marc Platt, the veteran movie producer who was behind Broadway’s hit musical Wicked, and Jeff Kwatinetz of The Firm.

One of Dicken’s most works, “Oliver Twist” is the story of an orphan boy who goes from exploited worker to being taken under the wing of the leader of a gang of London pickpockets, Fagin, who is set be played by Ice Cube.

Disney has already attempted to remake this classic story in 1998 with the animated film, “Oliver and Company.”

The Upcoming Disney-Pixar Toy Story 4 Has a New Screenwriter

Toy Story 4 New Screenwriter

Back in November, Rashida Jones, and writing partner Will McCormack, stepped away from the from the production of the upcoming Toy Story 4, leaving the slot of screenwriter open.

Today that vacancy has been filled. Stephany Folsom  was hired today by Disney-Pixar as the new screenwriter for the upcoming film. Folsom made the Black List in 2013 with the script “1969: A Space Odyssey Or: How Kubrick Learned To Stop Worrying And Land On The Moon.”

In July, John Lasseter stepped down as co-director of the film, leaving only Josh Cooley at the helm.

Toy Story 4 is set to be released on June 21, 2019.

VIDEO: New Baby Hippo At Disney's Animal Kingdom

Recently I brought you the news that “Tuma” the Nile hippopotamus at Disney’s Animal Kingdom gave birth to an adorable calf! The newborn is 6 days old today and park guests are falling in love with the Animal Kingdom’s newest addition.

The pair are doing well and Disney’s animal care team is giving Tuma and her calf plenty of room to nurse and bond, so the calf’s gender and weight may not be known for some time. Today I have a fun video for you that shows the two of them together.

Guests may see Tuma and her adorable calf on Kilimanjaro Safaris day and night. Guests participating in Wild Africa Trek may also see the hippos.

Aulani Recipes: Roasted Kamuela Tomato Soup with Truffled Brie "Grilled Cheese" and Tuna Poke

Looking for a tropical escape from the frozen winter months? Look no further than these deliciously warm recipes from Disney’s Aulani Resort!

ROASTED KAMUELA TOMATO SOUP WITH

TRUFFLED BRIE “GRILLED CHEESE”

‘AMA‘AMA

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

Serves 4-6

ROASTED KAMUELA TOMATO SOUP

5 large tomatoes, cored and cut in half

2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil, divided

1 teaspoon coarse salt, divided

1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

Handful fresh basil

Handful fresh oregano

1 white onion, large dice

3 garlic cloves

3 tablespoons tomato paste

1 (15-ounce) can Italian-seasoned diced tomatoes

1 cup chicken broth (optional, as needed)

TRUFFLED BRIE “GRILLED CHEESE”

1 7 ounce wheel Brie cheese at room temperature

1/2 tablespoon white truffle oil

6 slices soft white bread

2 tablespoons softened butter

FOR ROASTED KAMUELA TOMATO SOUP:

  1. Preheat oven to 450F. Place tomatoes on a large sheet pan. Drizzle with 1/2 teaspoon oil and season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and pepper. Roast 30 minutes, until softened and caramelized.
  2. Tie the ends of basil and oregano together in a bundle using kitchen twine. Set aside.
  3. While roasting tomatoes, heat remainder of oil in a soup pot. Sauté onions until translucent, about 7 – 10 minutes. Add garlic and sauté until gold and fragrant, 2 minutes.
  4. Add tomato paste and cook until tomato paste becomes dry. Add remaining 1/2 teaspoon salt. Add basil and oregano bundle, roasted tomatoes, and canned tomatoes with juices.
  5. Simmer on medium-low heat 30 to 45 minutes, until tomatoes are broken down. If mixture seems dry, add chicken broth, a bit at a time, until soup is thinned out but not watery.
  6. Working in batches, carefully pour mixture into a blender and blend until smooth. Alternatively, use a handheld blender to purée. Then pour mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or chinois, discarding solids. Serve hot.

FOR TRUFFLED BRIE GRILLED CHEESE:

  1. Gently cut away white rind from brie and discard.
  2. Place Brie in a medium bowl; add truffle oil. Mix gently until completely combined and smooth.  Set aside.
  3. Cut crusts off of bread; cut each slice into 2 (1×2-inch) rectangles.
  4. Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat.
  5. Spread one side of each rectangle with softened butter. Place bread rectangles butter side down in warm skillet and toast until golden brown, 2 to 4 minutes.
  6. Spread 1 tablespoon truffled Brie cheese on the un-buttered side of 6 bread rectangles. Top with remaining half of rectangles, creating 6 sandwiches.
  7. Serve sandwiches alongside soup.

Aulani Recipes: Roasted Kamuela Tomato Soup with Truffled Brie "Grilled Cheese" and Tuna Poke

TUNA POKE

Aulani, A Disney Resort & Spa

Serves 6 as an appetizer

INGREDIENTS

1 cup soy sauce
2 tablespoons freshly grated ginger

2 tablespoons sesame oil
2 tablespoons yuzu juice

Juice of 1 lime

1 tablespoon finely minced garlic

1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds, plus additional for garnish
1 tablespoon rice vinegar
1 teaspoon wasabi powder
1/8 teaspoon sugar

2 pounds fresh sushi-grade tuna, cubed
Freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Favorite prepared seaweed salad, for serving

DIRECTIONS:

  1. Whisk together soy sauce, ginger, sesame oil, yuzu juice, lime juice, garlic, sesame seeds, vinegar, wasabi powder, and sugar in a large bowl.
  2. Add tuna to mixture and toss to coat. Season with pepper, to taste. Refrigerate 5 to 10 minutes.
  3. Place a bit of seaweed salad in the bottom of a small dish. Top with tuna and garnish with toasted sesame seeds.

Cook’s Note: Poke (pronounced POH-kay) means “cut piece” or “small piece” in Hawaiian. Be sure to use sushi-grade tuna because the fish is raw. Yuzu is a sour Japanese citrus fruit, and you can purchase in some supermarkets and in Asian grocery stores. If you can’t find it, substitute 1 tablespoon lime juice and 1 tablespoon orange juice.

Redbox Says Disney is Restraining Competition to Protect Coming Streaming Service

Redbox Says Disney is Restraining Competition to Protect Coming Streaming Service

Redbox wants to turn a legal dispute over its sale of digital movie codes into a competition issue. The retailer is now defending itself from a lawsuit brought by Disney, and the first thing a California judge must decide is whether the Mickey Mouse giant is entitled to a preliminary injunction.

On Tuesday, Redbox suggested in court that Disney is engaged in copyright misuse and seeks “to stifle competition to more smoothly launch Disney’s own digital content streaming service, maximize the price other services like iTunes and Amazon (and their customers) pay for Disney movies, and secure a greater market share for Hulu — the viewing service Disney will control as part of its $52 billion acquisition of 21st Century Fox.”

Disney sells a number of “combo packs”, collections including a Blu-ray disc, DVD, and digital download code. The download code, marked “not for sale or transfer,” allows purchasers to redeem digital downloads of Disney content from authorized outlets and is the primary reason for the suit.

Disney objects to how Redbox disassembles “combo packs,” which include a Blu-ray disc, a DVD and a code that can be redeemed through authorized digital outlets and is marked “not for sale or transfer.” In Disney’s eyes, this amounts to a breach of contract on the terms in which such “combo packs” are sold as well as contributory copyright infringement. The latter claim essentially posits that customers who acquire movie download codes from Redbox and then redeem them are committing an unlawful act.

The defense notes Disney’s competitive intentions numerous times, and cites previous attempts at limiting Redbox’s success:

“Years ago, the movie studios attempted to quash competition by suing movie rental companies to prevent them from renting and reselling videocassettes. The courts rejected those efforts and held movie rental companies had the right to rent and sell the movies they purchased under the first sale doctrine.”

“Redbox would suffer significant financial harm and a loss of goodwill if its efforts were wasted because it was required to abruptly stop doing so. An injunction that removes Redbox from the digital download market when the technology is emerging is also likely to cause permanent and unquantifiable harm to its ability to participate in that market—a harm that is amplified by Disney’s impending launch of its own streaming service.”

“Redbox previously attempted to negotiate a vendor agreement with Disney. However, it demanded terms that would delay Redbox’s distribution of Disney new releases for so long as to seriously impede Redbox’s ability to rent and sell those titles when people want them most. As a result, Redbox turned to buying DVDs from retailers. Disney responded by prohibiting at least one retailer from selling to Redbox.”

The case is being heard in the United States District Court, Central District of California, Western Division by Judge Dean D. Pregerson. The hearing date is set for February 5th.
