Live-Action ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Actor David Hekili Kenui Bell Passes Away

Actor David Hekili Kenui Bell has passed away, just weeks after his big-screen debut in the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” remake.

Jalene Kanani Bell, David’s sister, shared the news on Facebook, writing, “It is with a heavy heart I share that my sweet, generous, talented, funny, brilliant and handsome little brother David H. K. Bell will spend today in the company of our Heavenly Father. I’ve been waiting for the words and mindset to properly express the joy of a human, and Prince of a Man he was, but fate pushed my hand this morning by a pre-scheduled Father’s Day newsletter honoring the men in our lives.”

In “Lilo & Stitch,” Bell played a man who drops his shaved ice in shock after seeing Pleakley’s alien form when Pleakley and Jumba emerge from a portal. This moment paid homage to a similar scene in the original animated film where a tourist drops his ice cream. The live-action rendition, however, faced criticism when it first appeared in trailers. Some of the backlash stemmed from the fact that Pleakley would no longer be in drag, and because Bell, being Hawaiian, arguably undermined the original film’s critique of white tourists. Despite the controversy, Bell’s brief, meme-worthy scene was well-executed.

According to his sister, Jalene Kanani Bell, David “planned ahead and purchased the best seats in the house” for his family to see the live-action “Lilo & Stitch” on its opening night in Kapolei just two weeks ago.

“We talked about and were so energized by the fans dressed in L&S gear head to toe, t-shirts, onezees, hats, mask, and the merch galore flying off the shelf as we stood in line for pop-corn,” she shared. In a touching tribute, Bell’s family honored him and eased their grief by getting shaved ice, a nod to his memorable scene in the film.

“David loved being an actor, doing voiceovers, spending time with Brutus traveling as an ambassador for Kona Brew. The film industry and entertainment was so exciting to him and I loved that he enjoyed the arts,” Jalene Kanani Bell explained. “He was and will remain a bright and shining star.”

Bell, a member of SAG-AFTRA, also appeared in CBS’ “Hawaii Five-0” and “Magnum P.I.” His IMDb page notes an upcoming role in Amazon MGM’s “The Wrecking Crew,” which stars Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as half-brothers investigating their father’s murder in Hawaii.

In an Instagram post, Bell revealed he pursued acting because of his father, who was an extra in the original “Hawaii Five-0.” He also shared his “Lilo & Stitch” audition video, featuring his homemade special effects, and some behind-the-scenes photos from the film’s set.

“Mahalo to all who worked on this film!” he wrote in a post about a “Lilo & Stitch” screening. “Was so awesome to see so many of the true stars in my opinion, our local crew in Hawaii. They deserve just as much or more recognition! Was also happy to see so much of the cast, especially those of us that round out the world of live-action Lilo & Stitch that the filmmakers so masterfully constructed.”

Catch a Glimpse of Pixar’s ‘Elio’ at Disney’s Hollywood Studios!

You can now catch a limited-time sneak peek of Disney and Pixar’s upcoming film, “Elio,” at Walt Disney Presents in “One Man’s Dream.” While you’re there, be sure to check out the small exhibit accompanying the preview!

As you step into Disney’s Hollywood Studios, an ad for the Elio sneak peek greets you, featuring Elio and his alien friend, Glordon, running through space—an image strikingly similar to the film’s official poster. The film’s title has also been added to the marquee of Walt Disney Presents and the doors of The Walt Disney Theater, where you can catch the preview.

Inside, a large collage on a wall display showcases early film sketches and character images. Against a vibrant purple and blue starry background, matching “Elio’s” space setting, you’ll see Ambassador Mira, Ambassador Turais, and various forms of OOOOO on the left. On the right, other aliens like Glordon and Lord Grigon are featured. Additionally, a glass display case in the center of the walkway presents even more sketches and art from the upcoming film.

Elio and his alien friends have also landed in the Magic Kingdom’s Merchant of Venus in anticipation of the Pixar film’s release on June 20, 2025. You can now find a merchandise collection featuring the movie around Walt Disney World.

The film is directed by Madeline Sharafian, Domee Shi, and Adrian Molina, with a screenplay by Julia Cho, Mark Hammer, and Mike Jones. Mary Alice Drumm produced the film. The cast also includes Zoe Saldaña as Elio’s aunt, Brad Garrett as Glordon’s father Lord Grigon, Jameela Jamil as Questa, and Shirley Henderson as OOOOO.

Bay Lake Tower Refurbishment at Disney’s Contemporary Resort Extended Through Summer 2026

Looks like the skyline around Bay Lake will feature a few more construction cranes than expected! The much-anticipated refurbishment of Bay Lake Tower at Disney’s Contemporary Resort has just been extended — and not by a little. Originally scheduled to wrap up in September 2025, the updated timeline now stretches into July 2026.

Construction first began in September 2024, focusing on room updates inspired by mid-century modern design and the whimsical artistry of Mary Blair. But this updated announcement from Disney now hints that the work may stretch beyond Bay Lake Tower’s interiors and into additional areas of the Contemporary Resort itself.

Guests planning to stay during this period are advised to expect visible and audible construction activity — and perhaps allow a little extra travel time around the resort. Disney’s official wording confirms:
“Refurbishments will occur in select areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort—including Bay Lake Tower. Please allow for extra travel time. Guests may also see and hear construction during their stay.”

We first got a glimpse of the newly refreshed rooms back in January, where vibrant wall art by Disney artist Joey Chou stole the show. The decor pays homage to the iconic look of the Contemporary Resort — complete with bold patterns, colorful accents, and nostalgic nods to Disney classics.

Additionally, Disney has confirmed that the Bay Cove Pool area will also be getting a refresh of its own, with a scheduled closure from January 26, 2026, through early May 2026. So if a poolside view is on your dream vacation checklist, you’ll want to plan around those dates.

Disney Musicals in Schools Expands Nationally with Free Online Program for Educators

Cue the curtain call — Disney Musicals in Schools is going nationwide! After more than 16 years of spotlighting student performers in select cities across the U.S. and U.K., Disney is expanding its magical arts education initiative to elementary schools across the country with the launch of Stage Connect — a brand-new, totally free online platform designed to help educators stage a successful musical, no experience necessary.

Hosted by Broadway veterans L. Steven Taylor (Mufasa in The Lion King) and Bonita Hamilton (Shenzi in The Lion King), Stage Connect brings the showbiz straight to the classroom. Through a library of engaging video tutorials, downloadable resources, and step-by-step guides, the platform empowers teachers to transform their classrooms into center stage — no drama degree required.

Each participating school also receives a complete Disney KIDS ShowKit featuring a 30-minute musical adaptation of iconic stories like Frozen, Finding Nemo, The Lion King, and 101 Dalmatians. The kits come packed with scripts, choreography videos, rehearsal tracks, and even director’s guides — everything needed to make the magic happen.

Lisa Mitchell, Director of Education & Audience Engagement at Disney Theatrical Group, summed it up best: “Disney Musicals in Schools is designed to spark creativity, foster a love for the arts, and help kids gain valuable skills such as confidence, empathy, and collaboration — all while experiencing the joy of putting on a show.”

And what a show it’s been! This spring, 360 students from six local Orlando schools performed scenes from their Disney KIDS musicals onstage at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, with support from Walt Disney World. Meanwhile, in New York City, nine schools took to the legendary New Amsterdam Theatre for a rousing showcase hosted by Hamilton and Taylor themselves.
