Major Closures and Refurbishments Coming to Walt Disney World Through 2026: What’s Opening, Closing, and Retheming Soon
If you’re planning a Walt Disney World vacation between now and 2026, there’s a whole lot of change on the horizon. From big-name ride refurbishments to themed lounge openings and even a few permanent closures, it’s clear Disney is laying the groundwork for an even more magical (and modernized) future. Let’s break down everything we know so far, park by park:
Spaceship Earth will close on August 25, 2025 for a much-anticipated refurbishment and will reopen later that year with updated storytelling and effects.
The new GEO-82 Lounge, inspired by Spaceship Earth, is already open for guests looking for a relaxing, futuristic escape.
And just in time for the summer crowd, Test Track will reopen on July 22, 2025, following a major overhaul in partnership with General Motors.
🦖 Disney’s Animal Kingdom
Big changes are in motion at Animal Kingdom, especially in DinoLand U.S.A.:
Already closed:
TriceraTop Spin, Fossil Fun Games, and Chester & Hester’s Dinosaur Treasures
It’s Tough to Be a Bug!
In early 2026, DINOSAUR, Restaurantosaurus, Dino-Bite Snacks, and Trilo-Bites will also close permanently.
But there’s something wildly exciting coming: the brand-new Zootopia: Better Zoogether! experience will open in Winter 2025, promising a vibrant addition to the park where guests can dive into Judy Hopps’ world.
🏰 Magic Kingdom
Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will close for refurbishment on August 4, 2025 and is expected to reopen in 2026.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently closed for a lengthy refurbishment and will also reopen in 2026.
Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat are all permenantly closed.
Walt Disney World Railroad is operating in shuttle mode due to the closure of Frontierland Station.
Coming soon, The Beak & Barrel, a Pirates of the Caribbean-inspired lounge, is set to open late 2025—expect a swashbuckling good time with themed drinks and immersive storytelling.
🎥 Disney’s Hollywood Studios
Muppet*Vision 3D and PizzeRizzo are closed.
Mama Melrose’s Ristorante Italiano has closed its doors.
But Hollywood Studios also saw two major new arrivals:
Disney Villains: Unfairly Ever After is now open.
The Little Mermaid: A Musical Adventure has debuted as a fresh, stage-based take on Ariel’s classic tale.
Looking ahead to 2026, Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster will close and reopen with a new Muppets retheme, replacing Aerosmith with a more family-friendly (and chaotic) crew.
On May 22, 2026, expect a new Star Wars: Millennium Falcon experience featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu to debut in Galaxy’s Edge.

Disney’s “Starlight” Parade to Pause for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Nights
As the highly anticipated “Disney Starlight: Dream the Night Away” parade prepares for its grand premiere on July 20, 2025, Disney has confirmed an expected scheduling detail: the new nighttime spectacular will not perform on evenings when Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is taking place. This follows a previous announcement that the “Starlight” parade would also be absent during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party nights.
“Disney Starlight,” poised to bring a fresh wave of enchantment to Magic Kingdom with its twice-nightly performances, is designed to enhance regular park hours. To accommodate this new offering, Disney has already extended Magic Kingdom’s operating hours and has been diligently preparing the park. The parade’s debut has also led to changes in Annual Passholder park reservation rules, with the first day of performances already fully booked for Passholders.
While the specific dates for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in 2025 have yet to be officially announced, the event typically runs on select evenings throughout November and December. This hard-ticket, after-hours event offers its own unique holiday entertainment, including the beloved “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade,” which remains a highlight for party guests. Therefore, the decision to pause “Disney Starlight” on these specific nights ensures that each event maintains its distinct festive atmosphere and offerings.
Despite the temporary pauses for special ticketed events, Disney has reassured guests that “Disney Starlight” will continue its regular performances throughout the broader holiday season, allowing more visitors to experience its magic. Meanwhile, Magic Kingdom’s daytime parade, the “Disney Festival of Fantasy Parade,” will continue to perform as usual, providing a vibrant spectacle for guests visiting during the day.

Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary: What’s in Store for July 17th?
Disneyland’s 70th Anniversary Celebration has been underway since May 16 but the official anniversary date is July 17. While the parks have been decked out, new entertainment, food, and character outfits have debuted, there are certain offerings that won’t be available until July 17.
As you step into the theater at the Main Street Opera House, you’ll get to experience the incredible story of Walt Disney’s life. Through remastered footage and audio recordings, you’ll be taken on a cinematic journey that leads from Walt’s early endeavors to the bright lights of Los Angeles and beyond. And when the curtain rises, guests will be transported to Walt’s office. Through the magic of Audio-Animatronics storytelling that he helped pioneer, Walt will share some heartfelt stories and words of wisdom.
After its initial run, “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” will play in rotation with “Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln.”
A Tribute to the Sherman Brothers
Inside the famed Main Street Cinema, you’ll get to see the story and impact of the famous songwriting duo, the Sherman brothers.
Here you can watch a heartwarming three-and-a-half minute film called “The Last Verse,” which celebrates the timeless connection and hope behind the Sherman brothers’ iconic song, “It’s a Small World.” Created for the song’s 60th anniversary, this film unveils a new verse written by legendary composer Richard M. Sherman in his final Disney contribution.
Final Verse to “it’s a small world”
The third and final verse in the “it’s a small world” attraction at Disneyland will debut beginning July 17. In the spirit of the beloved song, viewers journey across the globe as the song is passed from person to person and generation to generation, culminating in the reveal of this heartfelt new verse:
“Mother earth unites us in heart and mind
And the love we give makes us humankind
Through our vast wondrous land
When we stand hand in hand
It’s a small world after all.”
All-New Gallery Experience
As you enter the Opera House on Main Street, U.S.A., you’ll find an all-new gallery experience featuring the evolution of Walt Disney’s dream of Disneyland, which became the theme park that inspired generations and changed the entertainment world forever. On display will be images, art and artifacts – some never before seen – that show Disneyland before, during, and after Walt’s dream became a reality. Walt Disney Imagineering and the Walt Disney Archives have curated relics and memorabilia from the very early stages of Disneyland, as well as through the evolution of what Walt’s original park has become today.
As you journey further into the lobby of the Opera House, you’ll discover another special exhibit. Here you’ll encounter the story and history of Audio-Animatronics technology, from Walt’s day leading to the advancement of where we are today. You’ll learn about Walt’s inspiration and see firsthand the inner workings of this technology, and how far Audio-Animatronics figures have advanced through the years.
Additionally, Disney is honored to be collaborating with The Walt Disney Family Museum, which has selected more than 30 artifacts for these experiences in the lobby. Among the treasures on loan in the gallery will be original items from Walt’s private apartment above the Fire Station on Main Street. These items include an original rocking chair, lamp and table, all of which have never been publicly exhibited at Disneyland park before.
The Walt Disney Family Museum is also loaning some of Walt’s humanitarian accolades for guests to enjoy. You’ll be able to get a close look at items including Walt’s 1955 Emmy award for the “Walt Disney’s Disneyland” TV show, his Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by President Johnson in 1964, and the Walt Disney Commemorative Medal presented to Lillian Disney by President Nixon in 1969.
Along with these new experiences, guests will also be able to enjoy the Celebrate Happy Cavalcade, Tapestry of Happiness, Paint the Night Parade, Wondrous Journeys, World of Color – Happiness, over 70 limited-time food options, special merchandise, and more!
