Disney to Celebrate Donation of 75 Millionth Book to First Book During Eighth Annual Magic of Storytelling Campaign

The eighth annual Magic of Storytelling campaign kicked off yesterday, during which Disney will celebrate its 75 millionth book donation to First Book, a nonprofit that provides new free and affordable books to educators and organizations serving children in need. The Magic of Storytelling campaign aims to inspire families’ imaginations, cultivate a lifelong love of reading in kids and bring new books to underserved communities across the country.

The Magic of Storytelling campaign comes to life across Disney’s extensive network of broadcast and digital platforms and on MagicOfStorytelling.com. Through March 31, 2020, families and fans can participate in the Magic of Storytelling campaign in one of three ways:

  • Share a “Shelfie”: Take a selfie with a favorite book or in front of a bookshelf. For every post to Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #MagicOfStorytelling, Disney will donate one book to First Book.
  • Buy a Book: For every book purchased on shopDisney.com, Disney will donate one book to First Book.
  • Place a Bid in First Book’s Auctions: Legal U.S. residents who are 18 years of age or older can enter First Book’s Charitybuzz auctions. No purchase is necessary to enter. To learn more and to access the Official Rules and information, visit MagicofStorytelling.com. Disney will donate one book for each auction bid received.

In celebration of the launch of the Magic of Storytelling campaign, Disney and First Book, in cooperation with Albuquerque bookseller Bookworks, hosted a book distribution event at the Native American Community Academy in Albuquerque, New Mexico, featuring Rebecca Roanhorse, New York Times bestselling author of Race to the Sun (Disney•Hyperion Books/Rick Riordan Presents, January 2020). Additionally, during the campaign, ABC owned and affiliated television stations across the country will distribute donated books to schools and programs in their local communities to celebrate the joy of reading.

“On behalf of the 450,000 educators in our network, we are so very grateful for the 75 million new books made available through Disney’s generosity and long-term collaboration,” says Kyle Zimmer, president, CEO and co-founder of First Book. “Over 80 percent of the educators we work with let us know that without the work of First Book, the children and communities they serve would have access to few or no books. Disney’s powerful commitment to spreading the Magic of Storytelling has inspired millions of people to help get essential books and resources to educators serving children in need across the country.”

David Ambroz, executive director, Corporate Social Responsibility, Walt Disney Television, adds, “Access to books and education is the best path out of poverty for kids in need. We’re thrilled to work with First Book and teams across Disney for the eighth year in a row to make such an important impact for kids around the country. We’ve learned through this campaign over the years that when children receive their first book and are encouraged to read and learn storytelling, the possibilities are endless.”

Talent participating in the campaign includes Peter Weber from The Bachelor, Jaina Lee Ortiz from Station 19, Julie Bowen from Modern Family and many more fan favorites across ABC, Freeform, Disney Channels, National Geographic and FX.  Additionally, a new PSA highlighting the life-changing impact that books have on children—and featuring imagery inspired by Disney’s two upcoming films, Mulan and Artemis Fowl—is voiced by director Kenneth Branagh.

Scarlett Johansson Received Rare Double Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress and Supporting Actress

Scarlett Johansson Received Rare Double Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress and Supporting Actress

Scarlett Johansson Received Rare Double Academy Award Nomination for Best Actress and Supporting Actress. It’s a good year to be Scarlett Johansson during the 2020 Awards Season! With multiple films earning nominations across the board at varying award shows, Johansson has not only received a hefty number of nominations this year, but has received one of the rarest double nominations at The Academy Awards.

Scarlett has been nominated for Best Actress for her role in Netflix’s Marriage Story and a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role in 20th Century Fox’s Jojo Rabbit. Not to mention, another film Scar Jo was a part of, Avengers: Endgame, has received a nomination for Best Visual Affects in the 92nd Oscars.

Marriage Story comes from Netflix and was a passionate project for Scarlett to work on due to the parallels in her own life. Johansson herself went through a divorce a few years ago and now coparents her daughter with her ex-husband. The film very much showcases her real emotions tied into the performance, making it completely natural for Scarlett to nab a nomination for her honest portrayal of the character.

“A stage director and his actor wife struggle through a gruelling, coast-to-coast divorce that pushes them to their personal and creative extremes.”

Scarlett plays the single mother of young Jojo Rabbit in the satirical film, directed and starred by Taika Waititi, that makes you step back and think before having a new-jerk reaction to the content within the film itself. She provided notable emotional support in the story and was an instrumental member of the cast.

“Jojo is a lonely German boy who discovers that his single mother is hiding a Jewish girl in their attic. Aided only by his imaginary friend — Adolf Hitler — Jojo must confront his blind nationalism as World War II continues to rage on.”

Johansson has been the topic of conversation frequently, especially with the premiere of her first solo Marvel film, Black Widow, merely a few months away, (May 1st). We are so glad to see 2019 was a great year for her and can’t wait to see what is in store for 2020.

Congratulations to Scarlett Johannson on her Oscar Nominations!

Fans Are NOT Happy About ‘Frozen 2’ Being Snubbed for Best Animated Feature Oscars Nomination

Fans Are NOT Happy About 'Frozen 2' Being Snubbed for Best Animated Feature Oscars Nomination

Fans Are NOT Happy About ‘Frozen 2’ Being Snubbed for Best Animated Feature Oscar Nomination. It’s awards season for entertainment, and much to the delight of fans, Disney has received a total of 23 Oscar Nominations for titles such as Jojo Rabbit (20th Century Fox), Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (Lucasfilm) and Toy Story 4 (Pixar). Another animated featured title, Frozen 2, did receive a nomination for “Best Song”, BUT did not get a nomination for Best Animated Feature.

Many fans were completely shocked and upset at the news, especially after it was popularly believed Frozen 2 not only had the nomination in the bag, but was fully expected to take home The Oscar.

Though the film did receive a nomination for “Into the Unknown” as Best Song, fans still feel the film was completely ripped off at the chance of winning Best Animated Feature. Traditionally, sequels do have a harder time getting Oscar nominations, but that was not the case for Disney-Pixar’s Toy Story 4, which WAS nominated for Best Animated Feature.

The 2020 Academy Awards nominees for Best Animated Feature are:

  • Toy Story 4
  • How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
  • I Lost My Body
  • Klaus
  • Missing Link

We still have high hopes the film will take home an Oscar for Best Song, since”Into the Unknown”, has become as equally loves as “Let it Go” from the first film, but it is still surprising the visually stunning and playfully musical film did not receive a nomination from The Academy.

Baby Yoda” is coming to Build-A-Bear Workshop. With a high demand for “Baby Yoda” inspired merchandise from The Mandalorian on Disney+, it comes as no surprise Disney and Lucasfilm have struck a deal with popular toy chain, Build-A-Bear Workshop, to offer a new special build.

“I’m excited to share we will be one of the first companies to provide the digital and internet phenomenon who is trending higher than all the presidential candidates combined,” Build-A-Bear CEO Sharon Price John said during a presentation on Tuesday at the ICR Conference in Orlando, Florida, “We now will have The Child, also known as Baby Yoda,” John added.

“It’s great, again, to be in business with best-in-class partners,” John said, adding that Build-A-Bear, Disney, and Lucasfilm worked very quickly to make the Baby Yoda character a reality. “We started this process almost with the first episode,” John said.

“Disney was nice enough to hold back the secret and the designs of the Baby Yoda character, which means that there weren’t toys available immediately. However, there are shirts and cool things like that that are available,” showrunner and creator Jon Favreau told USA TODAY. “But I’ve seen the designs on the Baby Yoda dolls and toys and they’re really cool.”

"Baby Yoda" is coming to Build-A-Bear Workshop

Disney and Build-A-Bear Workshop are no strangers to partnerships and this is a guaranteed gold mine for both parties, with everyone winning, including their customers.

Needless to say, these will fly off the shelves faster than they can be stocked, and don’t be surprised when they begin to appear at your local Build-A-Bear Workshop in the coming months! No news yet if there will be any special sound effects or additional accessories associated with the character.
