In a developing story, two of Universal Orlando Resort’s new electric buses caught fire on Friday afternoon near the site of the Epic Universe theme park. Details are still emerging, and it is not yet known what caused the fire or if there were any injuries.
According to initial reports and video from local news station WESH2, first responders were on the scene quickly. The footage showed the two buses smoldering after the blaze was apparently extinguished. The incident occurred on a roadway just outside the Epic Universe campus.
While early reports referred to the vehicles as “tour buses,” the Universal globe logo was clearly visible, identifying them as part of the resort’s official fleet. Upon closer inspection of the footage, the buses appear to match the new electric models that Universal Orlando debuted earlier this year.
As of Friday afternoon, there has been no official statement from Universal Orlando Resort or local officials regarding the cause of the fire. It also remains unconfirmed whether any guests or team members were aboard the buses at the time of the incident. Walt Disney Imagineering has officially filed a permit that points to significant changes ahead for Aunt Polly’s on Tom Sawyer Island in Magic Kingdom. The permit specifically outlines plans for demolition work at the beloved, yet often closed, quick-service location.
This Notice of Commencement signals “General construction” at 4975C Caribbean Way, the specific address for Aunt Polly’s. The former restaurant is slated for demolition, reportedly to make way for the park’s anticipated Cars expansion. The permit has been contracted to Phillips & Jordan, Inc., and, as is typical for these types of permits, it’s valid for one year.
Construction has officially begun on Tom Sawyer Island, which permanently closed earlier this July. Already, the iconic “Tom (hearts) Becky” fence near Aunt Polly’s and several other familiar props have been removed from the island.
The permanent closure of Tom Sawyer Island, the Liberty Square Riverboat, and Rivers of America marks the beginning of an exciting transformation: a Cars expansion into Frontierland. This ambitious project will introduce Piston Peak National Park, an area inspired by the majestic Rocky Mountains. Designed with meticulous attention to sightlines, this new land will seamlessly connect to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and offer a convenient new walkway directly from The Haunted Mansion to the upcoming Disney Villains land. Piston Peak will also feature water elements and barrel bridges, serving as thoughtful homages to the beloved Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island. Guests can look forward to two new attractions, including a thrilling rally race ride.

The refurbishment project kicked off in February with work walls, scaffolding, and scrim surrounding the tower. By March, “camouflage” scrim was even added. Now, we’re happy to report that all of those barriers are gone!
Earlier this month some walls and scrim still encircled its base, though the refurbishment appeared largely finished. It seems the project primarily involved routine maintenance, such as repainting.
The tower’s interior remains inaccessible to guests. This structure is a replica of St. Mark’s Campanile, the iconic bell tower of St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, Italy. While the original stands at approximately 323 feet, EPCOT’s version is a more modest 83 feet tall.
