ESPN and NFL Forge a New Era with Landmark Media Deal
In a transformative move set to reshape the sports media landscape, ESPN has reached a non-binding agreement to acquire NFL Network, along with other key media assets from the NFL. In exchange, the NFL will receive a 10% equity stake in ESPN. This landmark deal, which is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in 2026, solidifies the partnership between the world’s leading sports media brand and America’s most popular sport.
The agreement is designed to future-proof how football is delivered to fans, with a heavy emphasis on ESPN’s new direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming service. By integrating NFL programming and content, ESPN aims to create a “premier destination” for football fans.
ESPN’s deep-rooted connection to the NFL Draft is getting even stronger. The new multi-year agreement extends ESPN’s rights, building on a history that began with the first televised draft in 1980. Starting with the 2026 NFL Draft, the event’s various presentations will be available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, in addition to the traditional broadcasts on ESPN, ABC, and ESPN Deportes. The new deal also includes a new daily show dedicated to the draft, which will air on ESPN2 from the day after the Super Bowl until the draft concludes.
Key Highlights of the NFL Draft Extension:
Dual Broadcasts: ESPN and ABC will each produce separate telecasts for Rounds 1-3.
Streaming Access: All draft presentations, including alternate broadcasts, will be available on Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN’s upcoming DTC service.
On-site Coverage: Popular shows like College GameDay and NFL Live will continue to be on-site, providing expert analysis.
Radio Broadcasts: ESPN Radio will continue its live coverage of the draft.
NFL Content Takes Center Stage on ESPN’s DTC Service and Disney+
ESPN’s new DTC service will be the centerpiece of an additional licensing agreement with the NFL. This pact expands the NFL experience with additional content and innovative interactive features. The agreement also allows for the sale and bundling of NFL+ Premium with ESPN’s DTC service, giving fans access to NFL Network and NFL RedZone.
New Features for NFL Fans:
Enhanced App Features: The new ESPN App will offer a multiview feature, allowing fans to watch simultaneous telecasts like Monday Night Football and the “ManningCast” at the same time.
Personalized Experience: The app will provide deeper customization, including personalized fantasy football team performance, legalized sports betting information, and integrated game stats.
Exclusive VOD Content: DTC subscribers will get exclusive video-on-demand content, including Monday Night Football replays.
Disney+ Content: The deal also expands NFL content on Disney+, with the potential for select simulcasts and the inclusion of highlights in shows like Vibe Check and SportsCenter+.
This deal represents a strategic play by both the NFL and Disney to adapt to the shifting media landscape, prioritizing streaming and digital engagement to deliver more NFL football to more fans in new and innovative ways.
Disney to Integrate Hulu Content and Service into Disney+ for a Unified Streaming Experience
The Walt Disney Company has announced a major strategic shift in its streaming business, revealing plans to phase out the standalone Hulu app and fully integrate the service into its flagship Disney+ platform. The move comes as Disney now holds 100% ownership of Hulu following its buyout of Comcast’s stake.
A new, “unified” Disney+ and Hulu streaming app is expected to launch in 2026. While the standalone Hulu app will eventually be retired, a Disney representative confirmed that customers will still have the option to purchase a standalone Hulu subscription, in addition to a standalone Disney+ plan, even after the new app’s debut.
In prepared remarks, CEO Bob Iger and CFO Hugh Johnston stated, “This will create an impressive package of entertainment, pairing the highest-caliber brands and franchises, great general entertainment, family programming, news and industry-leading live sports content in a single app.”
Iger later elaborated on an earnings call, noting that the single, unified app will deliver an “improved consumer experience” aimed at lowering churn and creating cost synergies by operating both services on one technological platform. The integration is also expected to present new opportunities for bundling advertising sales.
The executives explained that this strategic move is designed to provide subscribers with “tremendous choice, convenience, quality, and enhanced personalization.” This, they believe, will bolster profitability and margins within the streaming business through increased engagement, reduced churn, and new advertising revenue potential.
The integration follows the completion of Disney’s deal with Comcast to acquire the remaining one-third stake in Hulu in June 2025. The final price tag for the stake was approximately $9 billion, a figure determined through arbitration. Disney had previously launched a full integration of Hulu content within the Disney+ app in spring 2024 as a way to encourage bundled subscriptions.
In related news, Disney also announced it will no longer report individual streaming subscriber numbers for Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+, following a trend set by other major streaming services like Netflix. The company also confirmed that its standalone ESPN streaming product will launch on August 21, priced at $29.99 per month. The Hulu brand is also set to expand globally, replacing the Star tile on Disney+ internationally beginning in the fall of 2025.
ESPN, WWE Reach Landmark Rights Agreement as ESPN Platforms Become Exclusive U.S. Domestic Home of All WWE Premium Live Events, Including WrestleMania, Starting in 2026
ESPN and WWE have reached a significant rights agreement that will make ESPN platforms the exclusive U.S. domestic home for all WWE Premium Live Events (PLEs) starting in 2026. This landmark deal, a collaboration between ESPN (a subsidiary of The Walt Disney Company) and WWE (part of TKO Group Holdings, Inc.), positions the new ESPN direct-to-consumer streaming service as the go-to destination for the year’s most high-profile wrestling events.
The new streaming service will air all of WWE’s annual PLEs in their entirety, with select events also being simulcast on ESPN’s linear television channels. The agreement covers marquee events such as the two-night cultural phenomena WrestleMania and SummerSlam, along with other major specials like Royal Rumble, Survivor Series, and Money in the Bank. While the distribution is shifting, WWE will continue to be responsible for the production of all its Premium Live Events.
Jimmy Pitaro, Chairman of ESPN, highlighted the strategic importance of the deal. “WWE has an immense, devoted and passionate fanbase that we’re excited to super-serve on our new ESPN DTC platform,” Pitaro said. “This agreement, which features the most-significant WWE events of the year, bolsters our unprecedented content portfolio and helps drive our streaming future.”
Mark Shapiro, President and Chief Operating Officer of TKO, emphasized the cultural fit of the partnership. “WWE Premium Live Events are renowned for exactly the type of rich storytelling, incredible feats of athleticism and can’t-miss, cultural tentpole experiences that have become synonymous with ESPN,” Shapiro stated. “Through our UFC relationship, we have experienced firsthand how transformational an ESPN presence can be, and we know this will be an exceptional partnership at a time of great innovation for both companies.”
Echoing the enthusiasm, WWE President Nick Khan called the agreement a “pivotal moment” for wrestling fans. “Bringing WWE’s flagship events to ESPN’s platform is tremendously exciting. We know the sky is the limit,” Khan said. In addition to the main events, ESPN platforms will also have the opportunity to stream pre- and post-event shows tied to all PLEs.
Walt Disney World Achieves Record-Breaking Q3, Defying New Competition
The Walt Disney World Resort announced a record-breaking third quarter for the fiscal year 2025, a landmark achievement confirmed during the company’s earnings call on Wednesday morning. The quarter, which ran from March 30 to June 28, 2025, saw Disney’s domestic parks segment report a substantial 22% increase in operating income, reaching $1.7 billion.
This impressive growth occurred despite the highly anticipated opening of Universal’s Epic Universe just a few miles away in Orlando. The strong performance appears to validate a previous statement by Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, who predicted, “If something is built new in central Florida, like Epic Universe, that tourist is going to have to visit the Magic Kingdom.”
The positive trend extended across the entire Disney Experiences segment, which posted an overall income of $2.5 billion—an increase of $294 million compared to the third quarter of the previous fiscal year.
According to the company, the record-setting quarter for Walt Disney World was driven primarily by continued growth at its domestic parks and resorts, as well as a notable increase in guest spending.
Disney’s Domestic Parks Thrive with 22% Operating Income Increase, Despite New Competition
The Walt Disney Company’s domestic parks and resorts demonstrated remarkable performance in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025, with operating income soaring by 22% to reach $1.7 billion. This significant growth comes in a competitive landscape, notably with the recent opening of Universal Epic Universe in Orlando on May 22, 2025.
In the fiscal report for the quarter ending on June 28, 2025, the Disney Experiences segment as a whole reported a segment operating income of $2.5 billion, marking an increase of $294 million over the same quarter in the previous fiscal year. Total revenue for the segment also saw an 8% rise, climbing to $9.086 million from $8.386 million a year ago.
While domestic parks flourished, the report detailed mixed results for other parts of the business. Operating income for international parks saw a slight decrease of 3%, settling at $422 million, while consumer products experienced a minor increase of 1%, reaching $444 million. On the revenue side, international parks grew by 6% and consumer products by 3%.
According to the report, the strong performance of the domestic parks was primarily fueled by an increase in guest spending and higher volumes. These positive trends were also seen in the company’s cruise business, with a rise in passenger cruise days and occupied room nights, particularly following the launch of the Disney Treasure in Q1 FY2025. Disney noted that these operational gains offset an increase in costs, which were largely attributed to new guest offerings and the expansion of the Disney Cruise Line fleet.
The Walt Disney Company CEO, Bob Iger, commented on the quarter’s results, stating, “Our Experiences segment delivered another outstanding quarter driven by growth across all businesses at Domestic Parks & Experiences […]. Disney operates in a league of its own, and our achievements this quarter demonstrate how we continue to successfully execute across our strategic priorities.”
Iger added, “With ambitious plans ahead for all of our businesses, we’re not done building, and we are excited for the company’s future.”
The company’s total revenue for Q3 FY2025 was reported at $23.7 billion.
Another Option for Party-Goers: Beak and Barrel Open During Mickey’s Halloween and Christmas Parties
Based on a recent update to the Walt Disney World website, The Beak and Barrel is confirmed to be open during both Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
The Beak and Barrel at Magic Kingdom is officially set to open on Friday, August 29, 2025. You can start making reservations on August 14 via the Walt Disney World website or the My Disney Experience app. Disney has also confirmed that the restaurant will be open during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party.
The webpage for The Beak and Barrel now confirms that the restaurant will be a spot for snacks and refreshments during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
There’s a slight discrepancy to note: while The Beak and Barrel’s webpage lists information for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, which begins on August 15, the restaurant’s official opening date is August 29. It has not yet been confirmed if the location will open early for the initial party dates or remain closed for all events prior to its official opening.
Although the webpage for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party is live, it has not yet been updated to include The Beak and Barrel. The tavern’s own webpage advises guests to “check back in September 2025” for details on dining there during the Christmas parties.
This year’s party dates have been announced: Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party will run on select nights from August 15 through October 31, while Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party will take place on select nights from November 7 to December 21, 2025.
Are you excited to experience all The Beak & Barrel has to offer?
