We finally have an official opening date for a beloved classic. Walt Disney World has announced that the completely reimagined version of The Magic of Disney Animation will officially open to guests on September 14, 2026, at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

Taking over the building formerly occupied by Star Wars Launch Bay, this brand-new attraction marks the final piece of the beautiful transformation of the Animation Courtyard into the immersive Walt Disney Studios Lot. While the outdoor courtyard area opened to guests earlier this spring, the main building has remained closed behind construction walls—until now.

What Guests Can Expect Inside

The new attraction is heavily inspired by Disney’s hit 100th-anniversary animated short film Once Upon a Studio. Step inside the newly redesigned facility to find a handful of interactive, family-friendly experiences:

Drawn to Wonderland — A brand-new, Mary Blair-inspired Alice in Wonderland play area designed for younger guests. Disney recently shared a sneak peek of the fabrication team constructing this colorful playground.
Olaf Draws! — A fresh take on the classic Animation Academy where guests can learn to draw. Instead of a live artist, this high-tech drawing class will be hosted by an advanced Audio-Animatronic of Olaf himself.
Once Upon a Studio Theater — A dedicated theater space presenting the emotional animated short film complete with special in-theater effects.
Character Meet and Greets — The building will serve as a hub for six different character encounters, allowing fans to meet favorite Disney faces in a highly themed setting.

The exterior of the building has also been beautifully renovated to look like the iconic Roy E. Disney Animation Building in Burbank, California, complete with a giant blue Sorcerer Mickey hat serving as the main entrance facade.

Live-Action ‘Moana’ Remake Could Cost Disney Over $100M

It seems that even the demigod Maui and the wayfinding magic of Moana can’t quite steer Disney’s latest live-action remake out of stormy box office waters.

According to recent reports from Deadline, Disney’s newly released live-action adaptation of Moana is facing some incredibly tough financial projections, with losses estimated to land somewhere between $100 million and $125 million.

The news is particularly surprising given the absolute dominance of the animated Moana 2, which sailed past the $1 billion mark at the global box office. However, the live-action remake is currently on track to pull in a lifetime total of maybe $250 million—a far cry from its animated predecessor.

The movie’s opening weekend brought in just $43 million in the U.S. and Canada, with a global debut of $95 million.

To put that into perspective, those numbers are barely ahead of Disney’s live-action Snow White, which brought in $42.2 million domestically and $87 million worldwide during its opening weekend, eventually costing the studio an estimated $170 million loss. But while Snow White faced months of heavy pre-release controversy, the live-action Moana has sailed through production with virtually no drama—making the low turnout even more of a head-scratcher.

So, what went wrong? Many industry insiders are pointing to a highly overcrowded summer release window.

The Budget: The film carried a massive estimated production budget of $250 million before marketing expenses.
The Competition: The remake found itself directly competing with massive summer heavyweights, including Disney’s own Toy Story 5 (which has already brought in $879 million) and Universal’s highly popular Minions & Monsters.
Too Much Moana? The film was originally slated for a summer 2025 release but was pushed back to 2026 once the animated Moana 2 was greenlit for late 2024.

Speaking to Deadline, one veteran film finance source expressed complete bewilderment at the scheduling:

“Disney knew when they re-dated Moana that they had Moana 2 and Toy Story 5 in the mix; why they even considered a release date in 2026 blows my mind.”

While the box office numbers are lower than expected, the reaction from those who are going to see the film is incredibly divided.

The movie is currently sitting at a “Rotten” 33% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, who feel the live-action translation doesn’t capture the vibrant spirit of the original. However, everyday audiences are singing a completely different tune. The next chapter of Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress is officially underway. Just one day after guests experienced the attraction’s final performance in its current form, construction walls have appeared around the iconic Tomorrowland theater at Magic Kingdom as Disney begins work on its highly anticipated reimagining.

Gray construction walls now block both the entrance and exit ramps to Carousel of Progress. A single access door has been built into the entrance wall for construction crews, while the attraction’s familiar sign remains visible above the barricades. In a fitting nod to the beloved attraction, one of the walls even features the classic quote, “Well, that’s progress for you.”

While the entrance and exit are now closed off, the massive show building itself remains fully visible. At this point, Disney has not surrounded the entire theater with construction walls, suggesting much of the work may take place inside the rotating theater rather than involving major exterior changes. However, additional walls could appear later if work expands to the queue or surrounding area.

The closure marks the end of the attraction’s longtime 1994 version, which entertained generations of guests for more than three decades. When Carousel of Progress returns, it will feature its biggest overhaul since debuting at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. Instead of beginning at the turn of the 20th century, the updated show will start in the 1960s and tell a refreshed story of technological progress through the decades while honoring Walt Disney’s original vision.

Guests visiting Sunset Boulevard at Disney’s Hollywood Studios may need to make a quick pit stop elsewhere, as the restrooms located in the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster courtyard have temporarily closed for refurbishment.

Disney has placed signs outside the closed facilities directing guests to the nearest available restrooms. During the refurbishment, guests can use the restrooms located at Villains Unfairly Ever After or the facilities next to The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, both just a short walk away along Sunset Boulevard. At this time, Disney has not announced when the courtyard restrooms will reopen.

The closure comes less than two months after Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster debuted its all-new Muppets theme on May 26, giving the longtime thrill ride a fresh new storyline starring Kermit, Miss Piggy, Animal, and the rest of the gang. While the attraction remains open, guests should plan ahead if they typically use the nearby restrooms before hopping into the super-stretch limo.

Disney Cruise Line may soon be dropping anchor in the Big Apple once again! While nothing has been officially announced by Disney, a new clue has cruise fans buzzing that sailings from New York City could be making a comeback.

The latest hint comes from the Manhattan Cruise Terminal schedule website, where Disney Cruise Line has quietly appeared as a selectable cruise line. Even more interesting, the Disney Dream, Disney Magic, and Disney Treasure are all listed as potential ships. No sailings have been added to the calendar just yet, but the update has many fans wondering if an announcement could be on the horizon. To add even more fuel to the speculation, the website’s header image was recently updated to feature the Disney Magic docked in New York.

Disney Cruise Line last sailed from New York City in fall 2023, when the Disney Dream offered cruises to Bermuda and Eastern Canada. Prior to that, New York departures were offered only occasionally before Disney shifted more of its fleet to higher-demand homeports like Port Canaveral.

With Disney Cruise Line rapidly expanding its fleet, returning to New York makes a lot of sense. The line currently has eight ships sailing, with several more on the way through 2031. The Disney Destiny is preparing for its inaugural season from Fort Lauderdale, the Disney Adventure will sail exclusively from Singapore, and the Disney Believe is set to debut in 2027, followed by additional new ships. Bringing year-round or seasonal sailings back to New York would give guests in the Northeast another convenient option without flying to Florida.

It is also worth noting that while Disney’s website still includes pages referencing New York departures, there are currently no cruises available to book from the city. Whether this latest website update is simply routine maintenance or an early glimpse at future plans remains to be seen, but Disney Cruise Line fans will certainly be keeping a close watch.
