Mears Lays off More Workers Including Disney Bus Drivers
Due to the economic impact of COVID-19, Mears Transportation Group has laid off a total of 104 employees, including Disney bus drivers for Disney’s Magical Express. Disney’s Magical Express transports guests from the Orlando International Airport to select Walt Disney World Resort hotels.
According to Roger Chapin, executive vice president of public affairs for Mears, the company had 950 employees before the pandemic caused a slowdown of business, and now has roughly 650 employees.
According to Orlando Business Journal, Orlando is among the hardest-hit cities related to job losses due to the pandemic’s impact on the area’s $75 billion tourism industry and the businesses that support it.
“It is unclear if there will be additional impacts to the company,” said Chapin. “We are adjusting through the environment, as all businesses are today. The goal is to keep the doors open for the return of business — whenever that happens — and rehire employees as we can.”
