With the SPOILER ALERT out of the way, let’s talk about the latest controversy on the internet. The Mandalorian showrunners have found major success by using various genres to plot out the episodes and feature elements of storytelling that help to keep their audiences on the edge of their seats.

In the latest episode, Chapter 10: The Passenger, horror was the genre of choice for the episode and Din Djarin (Mando) and The Child traverse the galaxy to assist a new character, dubbed the “Frog Lady” aka, The Passenger. Not to spoil the entire episode, but the talk of the town this week is about how this passenger laments to Mando about the urgency she requires about reaching the moon called Trask to get her eggs to her husband for fertilization to save her ancestral line, yet the episode sees The Child devour not 1, not 2, but 3 of her unfertilized eggs. The actions of The Child were used as comedic levity throughout the episode with many fans not receiving the “joke” very well at all.

Many have sited the incident as insensitive, especially to couples looking to IVF to help raise their own families. Lucasfilm, executive Phil Szostak stood by the decision made for the episode, stating on twitter, “For the record, Chapter 10 of The Mandalorian makes it clear that the Frog Lady’s eggs are unfertilized, like the chicken eggs many of us enjoy. But obviously, chickens aren’t sentient beings and the Child eating the eggs is intentionally disturbing, for comedic effect.”

He continues in a second tweet, “Fans of horror know that disturbing things make some of us laugh and some of us squirm, or both. Your mileage may vary.”

Needless to say, Szostak’s comments have fallen tone deaf with many fans, with others torn about how to feel regarding the situation as it was clearly shown that the egg was not fertilized unlike another egg eaten by The Child in the episode, but most fans don’t seem to care about him eating a spider-like creature.
