Original Star Wars and Starfighter Coming to IMAX 70mm in 2027
A galaxy far, far away is heading back to the biggest screen possible. Lucasfilm and Disney have announced that the original Star Wars from 1977 and the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter will both be released in IMAX 70mm in 2027.

The original Star Wars, later retitled Star Wars: A New Hope, will return to theaters on February 19, 2027 as part of the franchise’s 50th anniversary celebration. The newly restored version will also mark the first time the movie has ever been shown in IMAX, either digitally or on film. Select theaters will screen the movie in IMAX 70mm, while additional locations will show the anniversary re-release for a limited time.
Then on May 28, 2027, Lucasfilm will bring Star Wars: Starfighter to theaters during the 50th anniversary weekend of the original film’s premiere. The new standalone adventure is directed and produced by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling as Kade Auberon, a cynical rogue whose mysterious past sends him into a dangerous journey across the galaxy. The film was shot with IMAX-certified film cameras and will also receive IMAX 70mm prints at select locations.

Starfighter also stars Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, Flynn Gray, and Amy Adams. Jonathan Tropper wrote the film, with Shawn Levy and Kathleen Kennedy producing. Between the return of the movie that started it all and a brand-new adventure arriving just a few months later, 2027 is shaping up to be a huge year for Star Wars on the big screen.
