A 1992 Christmas classic has just gotten that much better. The Director of The Muppet Christmas Carol movie, Brian Henson, has recently shared that a song from the original cut of the film has been found and reinstated! Time to make some popcorn and watch the Muppets in a whole new way!

Based on the Dickens classic ”A Christmas Carol, ” this Muppets version is meant to help classics appeal to children. The song recently rediscovered is titled ”When Love is Gone, ” and some fans who’ve seen the original movie on VHS may remember it was Scrooge’s fiancée who sang it. The song was removed for the film’s theatrical release, as Disney assumed younger viewers would lose interest during that scene. Unfortunately, the video master and negative for the song were lost in the process. This meant that when the film was translated to DVD, only the cinema version could be used. Thankfully, the footage was discovered several weeks ago during a remastering of the movie, and the scene will be integrated for the 4K version.

The song is sung by Meredith Braun, who plays Scrooge’s fiancée. In the heartbreaking scene, Belle breaks off her engagement to young Scrooge because of his growing love of money and faded love for her. It occurs when Scrooge, played by Michael Caine, revisits a Christmas years ago with the Ghost of Christmas Past. Though it was removed so that the film would appeal better to children, it is undeniable that it adds some humanity and backstory to Scrooge’s character. It is also certain to appeal to many little girls, in this writer’s opinion.

The Muppet Christmas Carol is currently playing on Disney+ as the original cinema release version. It remains to be seen whether Disney will be updating it to the restored version at this time. We can only hope we will be hearing Belle’s song soon!

  1. I have the DVD version of a Muppet Christmas Carol (watch it every year!) and my DVD has that song; it has the theatrical and extended version on the disc. They were right to cut it out of the theatrical release. The song really drones. I prefer the theatrical version myself.
