Theme parks in California remain closed during the pandemic. While many are willing and able to reopen safely, the state reopening guidelines prevent that from happening.

Now, the Los Angeles Board of Supervisors is supporting a bill that would allow larger theme parks to reopen sooner. Right now, larger theme parks cannot reopen until their county reaches the lowest tier on the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy plan.

The bill would allow theme parks to reopen in the moderate tier rather than the minimal tier. Supervisor Kathryn Barger sent a letter to the bill’s sponsors earlier this month.

“With full outdoor operations and the ability to maintain physical distancing, theme parks across the country have proven that they can safely reopen,” Barger wrote. “Large theme parks nationwide began reopening last summer and there (have) not yet been any outbreaks or spread from these establishments.”

Densely populated counties like Orange and Los Angeles would have an extremely difficult time reaching the minimal tier which requires less than one daily case of COVID per 100,000 residents and a test positivity rate of less than 2%. That would keep parks like Disneyland and Universal Studios Hollywood closed indefinitely. Take a look at the tiers below:

The LA Board’s vote was unanimously in support of the bill.

Even if theme parks are allowed to open sooner, capacity will still be limited and strict health & safety protocols will need to be in place.

Disneyland has shown that it is ready and able to open safely. Right now, the Downtown Disney District and Buena Vista Street is open to guests for shopping and dining. Next month Disney California Adventure will host a new food & beverage experience. Hopefully this spring guests will be able to experience their favorite rides once again!
