Illumination Confirms Highly Anticipated Three-quels for ‘Sing’ and ‘Secret Life of Pets’
Animation powerhouse Illumination is keeping its foot firmly on the gas pedal. Fresh off the massive, multi-billion-dollar success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie and ahead of the theatrical release of Minions & Monsters, the studio has officially confirmed that two of its biggest original franchises are returning to the big screen.
In an interview with Collider, Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri revealed that Sing 3 and The Secret Life of Pets 3 are both in active development.

It has been a minute since we checked in on Max, Duke, and the rest of the Manhattan pet squad. The Secret Life of Pets 2hit theaters back in 2019, and Meledandri admitted that the studio deliberately took its time before diving back into a third installment.
Rather than rushing out a sequel just to continue a lucrative brand, the creative team waited until they had the perfect narrative hook.
“It took us a while to come back to Pets, waiting for an idea that we felt really would earn its place,” Meledandri explained. “I think we found a way into a The Secret Life of Pets story that I certainly love.”
Fans will also be thrilled to hear that Chris Renaud—the original director of the first Pets movie and the co-director of Despicable Me—is returning to lead the project, which is already “well underway.”

The star-studded, musically charged world of Sing is officially expanding. The original 2016 film followed theater impresario Buster Moon saving his beloved stage with an open singing competition, while the 2021 sequel took the beloved crew of animal performers to the glitz and glamour of Redshore City.
According to Meledandri, the studio isn’t just looking to repeat the same old chorus. Writer-director Garth Jennings, who masterminded the first two films, is back in the director’s chair.
“Garth Jennings… is focusing all of his energy right now with the team at Illumination, developing what I believe is going to be a Sing movie that is honoring what we all love about the film,” Meledandri shared, adding that the upcoming movie will introduce “some entirely new ideas into the story.”
While Illumination has its release pipeline mapped out through 2030, official release dates for these specific three-quels have not yet been locked into the calendar. However, Meledandri teased that the studio expects to make more formal announcements regarding both projects relatively soon.
