Hilary Duff Confirms the Lizzie McGuire Reboot "Isn't Going to Happen"

Hilary Duff Confirms the Lizzie McGuire Reboot “Isn’t Going to Happen”. Lizzie McGuire fans were shocked to see an update from series star, Hilary Duff, that shared the Disney+ revival series will not be moving forward.

Hilary Duff and original series creator Terri Minsky fought to keep a more honest telling of Lizzie’s story as she navigates her 30’s rather than her teen years. Portions of the show would touch on more adult topics and conversation and Disney quickly stepped in to say that wasn’t going to happen. Minsky was the first to step away from the project, siting “creative differences” as the reason for her departure, but for months now Duff has gone up to bat for the series and it seems the studio and Duff are at a stand still, leaving the series to gather dust on the shelf.

The revival series had several episodes previously recorded and was fairly on track before Disney halted production, but it seems we will never get the chance to see a premiere. A recent update on Instagram from Duff herself confirms the series “isn’t going to happen” at this point, and we are sad to hear this news during the holidays. Duff’s Instagram post read:

I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life. She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me. I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work but, sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen. I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves. We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with with her. I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried the best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.

Needless to say, fans of the original series are not happy that the negotiations could not yield positive results, with many fans hoping the series could at least make the move to Hulu which is known to feature more adult rated content.

One aspect of this decision could be that the rumors of Disney+ merging with Hulu may be true and the series would still be dubbed too adult for the family friendly network. Regardless of the choice to merger the two streaming services or not, it is disheartening to see that Disney and Hilary Duff could not come to an agreement for the series. Like many other fans, we were really looking forward to the nostalgic series while also getting to see one of the most beloved Disney Channel characters as a full fledged adult.

Disney has yet to announce any cancellations for the series, and if the series can not be done with Duff we may see the entertainment company elect for an entire reboot series with a new cast, potentially as tweens yet again.
