One of Disney’s beautiful giraffes just celebrated her 5th birthday! Gemma Giraffe celebrated yesterday with a specially-made birthday sign made of beet pulp and sweet potato. Her favorite treats were the perfect way to enjoy her birthday!
Gemma lives at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge on the Jambo House side of the resort. This location, as all Disney giraffe habitats, seeks to mimic what would be Gemma’s home if she had been born in Sub-Saharan Africa. She is free to roam next to other animals like wildebeest, springbok and Ankole cattle. She has the chance to be active and find enrichment with puzzle feeders and other activities. And of course, Disney provides top-notch veterinary care any time Gemma needs a check-up or treatment.
Giraffe habitats have been shrinking due to growing farms and ranches, and while giraffes aren’t legally classified as endangered yet, many scientists believe they are headed in that direction. The worldwide giraffe population has declined 40 percent in 30 years, and there are now approximately 68,000 left in the wild. Some subspecies have lost as much as 90% of their population since the 1980s. Something must be done to ensure this species’ survival. The Disney Conservation Fund is committed to supporting nonprofit organizations to protect wildlife like giraffes and providing them safe spaces to live and thrive.
Happy 5th birthday, Gemma! We love to see you when we visit Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, and we can’t wait to celebrate many more birthdays with you!
