We recently had to opportunity to learn about “Frozen 2” at the Walt Disney Animation Studios. We got to take a closer look at where our friends’s adventures take them. Follow along with us as we look closer into what elements make up the Enchanted Forest and the Dark Seas.
For the Enchanted Forest, we got to hear from Character Art Director, Bill Schwab. Bill introduced us to the Earth Giants. Animating these asymmetrical giants was no easy feat. They wanted the Earth Giants to feel familiar to the Rock Trolls in the first film, but on a much larger scale. Head Of Animation for the film, Tony Smeed, explained how they work-shopped how these giants were supposed to breathe. They wanted the rocks to behave naturally with the environment around them. In order to do that and convey the motion of breath, they animated the rocks sliding over and under one another. We can’t wait to see how Elsa, Anna, and the gang handle these Earth Giants!
Another element our friends encounter in the Enchanted Forest is Gale the Wind Spirit. The animators faced another challenge ahead of them with Gale. They had to figure out how wind will look because it’s something we can’t see. Gale started as a 2D animation with leaves, sticks, lighting to give a magical effect. Then, Effects Designer, Dan Lund, brought more life to Gale by adding effects over the 2D Animation. To make the spirit’s movements more clear and concise, they called upon Tech Animation. With animation, effects, and tech animation, it’s possible for the audience to follow Gale’s path when on screen.
You don’t want to miss all the adventures in the Enchanted Forest and you definitely don’t want to miss “Frozen 2” when it debuts in theaters November 22, 2019.
